  • The Pennsylvania high school football game between Central Catholic and Penn Hills had an insane ending. Central Catholic trailed 28-27 with just a few seconds left and lined up for the potential game winning field goal. The kick was blocked however, and Penn Hills players ran onto the field to celebrate. This celebration was short lived however, as the play had never been whistled dead and Central Catholic picked up the loose ball and ran it to the end zone for a touchdown. Since the refs ruled that the ball never crossed the line of scrimmage, it was still live. With the score, Central Catholic defeated Penn Hills 33-28.

Sorry for posting high school football but I thought this was a pretty crazy and unique way for a game to end. Also for those confused, the play was not whistled dead after the block because the refs ruled that the ball never went past the line of scrimmage (although this is debatable). If the ball had landed past the line of scrimmage and nobody touched it, then the play would have been whistled dead.

In this case, yes. In any other case, no. Whistle is for letting everyone know that something has happened, that caused the play to be dead. Player goes out of bounds, play is dead even without the whistle. Incomplete pass, play is dead when ball hits the turf even without the whistle. Player has a knee down, play is dead even without the whistle. So you as a player must know not to hit anyone out of bounds, hit a receiver after incomplete pass and so on, even if the whistle has not blown yet. Just nitpicking, sorry.

@LTNetjak No if it rolls past LOS it turns into punt rules. Basically if the kicking team touches the ball it would be downed for the opposing team.
What is the rule when a punt or field goal is blocked? Who can pick up the ball and run with it?
"The rule is the same - for the most part - in both high school and college. A punt or field goal that is blocked and remains behind the line of scrimmage can be picked up and advanced by either team.
For any field goal or punt that is partially blocked and travels beyond the line of scrimmage, think of it as a regular punt. The kicking team can down the ball but not advance it unless first touched by the defense after it crosses the line. The defense can pick up the ball and run with it or let it roll dead.
One difference between the college and high school rules comes when a partially blocked field goal travels beyond the line and is eventually downed or rolls dead. At the high school level, think of it again as a punt. Wherever the ball is downed is where the ball is spot. At the college level, the ball is returned to the 20-yard line or the previous line of scrimmage, whichever benefits the defensive team."

For those (like me) who were confused as to when the kicking team was allowed to advance the ball:
This is universal - high school, college and pro. If the blocked kick LANDS either behind the line of scrimmage or in the neutral zone, everyone can advance the ball unless the referees blow the play dead. If it LANDS past the neutral zone, only the defense can touch it; the kicking team can only advance it if the defense touches the ball but doesn't secure it (for example, the Leon Lett Thanksgiving blooper I'm sure y'all have seen before). Where the ball rolls after landing is inconsequential; it only matters where the ball fell. In this case, it seems to fall in the 35 yard line but then rolls towards the LOS at the 32. The roll didn't matter, the initial bounce did. But it's a good thing #52 hopped on it because the refs could've blown it dead right there. So, good heads up by #52, the kids will learn a valuable lesson - don't leave your job unfinished lol
EDIT: Same rules apply for blocked punts also.

it's so ridiculously close. Without video replay this is a tough call in the moment. The line of scrimmage is the 32 yd line and the ball is still *barely* on the 32 yd line. it's definitely going to roll past it if it isn't picked up.

    • @starwarriorterra8373

Judging by other "past the line of scrimmage" rules, it's likely the rule is focused on where the player is, the same way illegal forward pass or illegally kicking the ball is only called when the player is entirely past the line. With that in mind, it's a close call.

    • @alostbard

Has no bearing on this play. It just means the blocked ball cannot be picked up and then thrown for a pass if it rolls past LOS, but can be picked up and ran from anywhere. Years ago in a bowl game between Wisconsin and Arkansas, the Hogs blocked a punt, but the Wisconsin punter picked up the ball and completed a pass for a first down. I remember the TV analyst remarking on the rare play, and how he would not have been able to throw it past the LOS, but could have ran it even if the ball went past. This was many years ago, so rules may have changed.

Yeah, very hard without video so would have been a judgement call but even so it also shouldn’t have stood because before they run the touchdown in, the Central Catholic’s sideline came onto the field. I believe The correct call would have been as both side lines came on before the ball was ruled dead, would have been both sidelines penalised with an unsportsmanlike. Now the penalties offset and then I think to replay the down however as the clock had expired the game could have been over but I think then technically even though there were offsetting penalties the game can’t end on the penalty! If the kicked ball blocked by a defender first touches the ground behind the line of scrimmage, the kicking team can pick it up and advance it. If it is merely tipped or first lands past the line of scrimmage, it is treated the same as a punt meaning that the kicking team cannot recover it unless the "receiving" team first touches it.

I just had a thought. I often post multiple times, because thoughts pop into my head after I hit the "comment" button, and the "edit" function doesn't always work.
Even if the ball is considered to be past the line of scrimmage, which would cause the play to be blown dead as soon as #52 touched the ball, it still may not have ended well for Penn Hills....here's why.
On a kick that travels past the line of scrimmage the ball is considered live until either 1) the kicking team touches the ball (you see this all the time when the kicking team "downs" a punt). Technically, it an "illegal touch" and the play is dead. Or 2) the receiving team attempts to advance the ball, and the ball carrier is brought down. And this camera angle make it look as if the ball is about a half yard past the line when #52 picked it up.
On this play, Penn Hills blocks the kick, and even if the ball travels across the line of scrimmage, it is still a live ball until either touched or advanced (although refs will whistle the play dead when the ball stops moving and nobody is making an effort to touch or recover the ball). When Penn Hills' bench empties, #52 has yet to pick the ball up, so it's still a live ball when the party on the field starts (and I don't blame the Penn Hills players....beating Central Catholic is a big deal, they are a good team)
So, to take the play all the way through to the end. Kick blocked. Ball dead as soon as #52 for Central picks it up. No touchdown. But there should then be a 15-yard penalty on Penn Hills for "unsportsmanlike conduct, excessive celebration." (Yes, that would blow, but I'm just talking rule book here.). That would result in a 15-yard mark-off to the 17 yard line (and 49 yd. FG would be snapped from the 32 yard line) and Central receiving one untimed down from that spot (since the game can't end on a defensive foul), so the Central kicker would get a chance to hit a 34 yard FG to win the game.
A question just occurred to me. As you're watching this does this stir any memories of "THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!!!!"?

  • @Rowgue51
    @Rowgue51 Рік тому

As has been pointed out already by multiple other people, yes the ball clearly went beyond the line of scrimmage after being blocked which makes it just a missed field goal attempt unless the defense touches it. So technically the officials got this wrong and a team got a win that shouldn't have.
Having said that though I'm not sure what the defense was thinking. It was way behind the line of scrimmage when it was initially blocked and just barely rolled over the line when it finally came to a rest. By the rules the score shouldn't have counted, but there is no reason they shouldn't have been attempting to recover the block and make sure it couldn't be advanced.

With that loss, the Penn Hills team went from winning their conference and probably getting the #2 seed in the WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League) playoffs to being out of the playoffs entirely (due to the tiebreaking system the WPIAL uses).
So this one play really did come back to bite the team in the dupa big time. I feel really bad for the kids, not so much for the coaches. It falls on the coaches to teach their players to keep their composure in situations like this, play all the way through to the whistle, and to CURB THEIR ENTHUSIASM until the result of a play, or a game are final.
I'm retired now, but there is a group of us who get together occasionally for lunch, for a ballgame, an evening at one of the casinos, etc., an afternoon at the track, etc. One our "retired guys bunch" was part of the officiating crew for this game.

Play to the whistle. One of the first things coaches teach and something one team fully forgot including the coaches lol

I can tell you right now what school has the smarter students. Oh wait, I could have told you that before the game even started, but this proves my point.

Think about this for a moment. If it were true -- IF IT WERE TRUE -- that it only matters where a punt first landed and not where it rolled to, THEN punters could be trained to deliberately punt the ball forward into the ground and have it continue to bounce and roll downfield where the kicking team could recover and (presumably) even advance it. The rule is that it doesn't matter where the ball first bounces, it matters where the ball is -- where it rolls to in this case -- when somebody picks it up. On this play, the officials ruled -- rightly or wrongly -- that he picked up the punt while the ball was still behind the line of scrimmage.

A lot of NFL players wouldn't be that heads up. Always play though the whistle, and always run it in.

I didn’t expect the defense to just not play 😂😅

The kid who blocked the ball must have been someone special to the school.

It was close to the line or right on it from what I see, not sure how they rule that but GG to the team not stopping.

Everyone at penn hills just learned to play till the whistle. jumping around and patting yourself on the back has become more important than actually playing sports now
