Wow, fantastic images Espen. That must be some hell of a trek to get there, but it was all worth it. Thank you for sharing, and so glad to see you carry a small Olympus gear compared to some of the giants that the others were using! That's the strength of MFT cameras.
I live in Yukon, Canada. We also have muskox here in the far north, and also a small herd in a preserve close to my town. They are impressive animals, indeed. I was intrigued to hear you talk about the discovery of fossil bones from the past, and then Norway's decision to reintroduce the species. We did the same in the Yukon with Bison. Until the megafaunal extinctions of the late Pleistocene, the most common large animal in Yukon was the Steppe Bison. The new animals that were reintroduced in the 1970's have done incredibly well, and we now have very large, and growing, wild herds in various parts of southern Yukon. I have been lucky to photograph muskox and bison here thanks to modern preservation efforts. I hope the muskox do similarly well in Norway. This is a positive story that goes beyond photography. Thanks for sharing your video. I am now subscribed.
I already subscribe to Trond Westby's channel, and I enjoyed his take on this epic adventure. But your film was also beautifully done. I think that final image is superb: so much more than just a photo of a musk ox.
So glad you made it to Dovre and got to photograph the fantastic MuskOxen. I am very impressed at how well the OM gear fulfilled the tough asks . I was impressed at how much colour came through in the washed out environment. Well done Espen. I was left in AWE after watching your vid and those of the other guys. Cheers,
magnifique! bravo Espen pour cette aventure que nous fait partager avec tes amis; il n'y a pas que les grands fauves d'Afrique qui nous font vibrer, la rencontre avec ces animaux quasi-préhistorique est vraiment fantastique.
Hi Espen good to see your take on the trip, I also watch Trond a lot and love his images and as I said to him what you guys put yourself through to get those images is beyond me. I will look forward to seeing your next installment. Until next time take care and stay safe my friend.
looks like you guys had an amazing time out on dovre! Great to see what was going on behind the scene as well as the information about the muskoxe. well done ! =)
Espen, Please accept my apologies for my late review to your awesome musk oxen experience Some great video footage you have managed to capture here. The Musk oxen has to be a hardy animal that’s for sure in that climate. It seems you had great support with great experience from Trond and the other two guys. Those snow shoes looked hard work I can just imagine what that biting wind was like. We’re you quite close to them as it looked like you were and seeing the Northern Lights….just Wow that’s got to be an amazing experience just on it’s own. It just goes to show how experienced you have to be to take on a task like this.
Hey Espen, great video. I have seen Trond's video of the trip I didn't know you were part of the group. Pretty exciting but strenuous.... I am looking forward to the BTS video. Greg
An absolutely amazing video! I have seen this wonderful animals in spring (begin of june), in summer and in autumn (september), but never in the winter. I havn't the eguipment and the experience with the winter conditions in the norwegian fjell. Two times I was very close to this animals because i didn't saw them before. The first time I passed a rock at the path and behind the rock was the ox, just about 5 meters away from me and I moved back. The second time was in the forest near Kongsvoll trainstation. It was no problem, both times. But I have seen them many times on a longer distance and I have even seen their great fights! I have a great video about them on my channel!
Love your story telling as always Espen, makes us feel like we are right there experiencing everything with you (except the cold hahaha). The way you weave history, information, environment and excitement is a gift. So pleased you found them. I'm sure this is an experience you will never forget, with stunning images to reflect back on 🙂
The Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is a bear-sized bovid native to northern Eurasia and North America, it is the only living representative of the genus Ovibos and one of only two surviving members of the tribe Ovibovini, the other being the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor), which lives in the Himalayas, Ovibovini is one of three extant tribes that are now classified within a new subfamily known as Ovibovinae, the others being Hemitragini (Tahrs) and Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat), Ovibovinae is a subfamily of bovids that is mostly native to Eurasia and lives mostly in cold-climate habitats, the Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) and Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) are the only extant members of Ovibovinae that are also found in North America, although, unlike the muskox, the mountain goat is exclusively native to North America, while the muskox lives in both North America and Eurasia, Ovibovinae is divided into three tribes, Hemitragini (Tahrs (contains 3 genera: Arabitragus, Nilgiritragus, and Hemitragus)), Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat (contains 4 genera: Oreamnos, Rupicapra, Capricornis, and Naemorhedus)), and Ovibovini (Muskox and Takin (contains 2 genera: Budorcas and Ovibos)), it is also hinted that the subfamily Ovibovinae (Muskox, Takin, Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, Mountain Goat, and Tahrs) is fairly similar and most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeests, Wildebeests, Tsessebes, and Hirola).
I had the good fortune of seeing quite a few Muskox in the Northwest Territories of Canada in the arctic in summer. Lovely creatures. Not sure why it is necessary to endure those winter arctic conditions to see Muskox. They will be there in the summer.
@@EspenHelland For sure that arctic environment in winter shows off the toughness of the muskox. Its probably my advanced age! Winter in the arctic is a young man's game. Its tough enough in the summer! Nice video.
Wow!! So captivating and entertaining. Thank you for always entertaining us at home. You're Swedish as well, are you not? Someone once said to me: "You have to suffer for your art". That'd apply to you. Although upon reflection, it was nothing, right? ;)
Thank you very much for showing your adventure ... 👌👍👍🙏 Great , you with your great Olympus E-M1X gear and the 300mm. ... firing freehand ... 👌👍🙌👏 , and the others go heavy cannons that they carry ... 😂😂😰😰😩 Greetings... "Saludos... 👋🙋😃 "
Great video don’t appreciate how hard life is up north until you watch films like these.
Thank you Stephen! It can get extreme, don’t think we experienced the worst of it.

🤣 I can see that happening! Thanks a lot Josh!

Excellent Espen! Wonderful images. I was lucky summer -74 and met them a couple of hours hike up along Stölådalen. Not that hard as your trip.
Cool, they are amazing creatures! Thank you Lennart 🙂
Great stuff Espen
