  • It's spring and I take the Camper van up the east coast of Scotland to photograph seabirds. The bird species I'm looking for are puffins, gannets, kittiwakes and razorbills. Hopefully we'll see even more! I'm using the OM-1 with AI Bird Detection AF.
    Join me on Seabird Photography Workshop May & June 2022: www.espenhelland.com/seabirds
    This is a group workshop (max 3) where we'll focus on gannets and birds in flight on the east coast of Scotland.

    Beautiful location, would love to visit. I love the silhouette of the shag, that's one for the frame. I went to visit the puffins and gannets at the great saltee island and it was a first for me. I had an amazing time, you inspire me to go further a field. Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you Espen for this super blog,
    I could feel the enjoyment of the location from the big smiles on your face.
    Liking the evening backlit gannet images.
    I had my first big seabird colony experiance the weekend before easter up at Bempton and Flamborough head for a few days.
    Very windy so I was glad to have the safety of the viewing platforms along Bempton. I also had the pleasure of watching the Black Browed Albertross on my visit.
    Having enjoyed being amongst a big seabird colony myself I could realy relate to the buzz your were having with your photography.
    I am now top of the list for my pre-order om system om-1 sometime in May. (its been a long wait)
    All the best

    Wow, puffins and flowers together are just perfect. I am thinking of upgrading my OM1mkII. Espen, have you tried puffins in flight with the new camera? My MkII can handle the lumbering gannets easily, but the puffins on Mull got the best of it.

    • @EspenHelland
      @EspenHelland  2 роки тому

      Thanks! Not tried puffins in flight yet, but had a few razorbills and the OM-1 did a superb job :)

    • @danielmackenzie680
      @danielmackenzie680 2 роки тому

      I've been considering a mkii upgrade too. After trying dunnit head and puffin cove yesterday. I'm confirmed that I'm the problem🤣. Getting a flying puffin in the viewfinder was virtually impossibly. I can't even imagine getting it large enough in frame for a good print.

    • @arpadszabo6170
      @arpadszabo6170 2 роки тому +1

      @@danielmackenzie680 I would suggest the following: study their flight patterns, they sort of go the same way all the time. Even with a long lens, you can catch them at infinity and keep up with them. Puffins are quite tame, in a good location (I did this on Staffa and Lunga) you can use a medium zoom, like a 70-200 and if you are lucky it will land at yout feet. Naturally, this might take a lot of tries, I had at least 9000 pictures and was pleased with just a few. Regarding Olympus, It has trouble if the bird is heading towards you (even walking, and the puffins are little rockets). I hope they have managed to iron this out in the new camera. The other camera I use is the trusty D500, it managed to do better in this situation.

    • @danielmackenzie680

      @@arpadszabo6170 great tips thanks. I was delighted to get 1 bird close enough to fill the frame with a good distance to the background. It made me so happy I switched to video and got a 30 sec clip. Delighted with my luck , I backed away and went home with a huge smile. My first ever bird photo sequence I'm happy with😁

  • @danielmackenzie680
    @danielmackenzie680 2 роки тому

    I'm not sure you're really a photographer 🤣? You changed to a shorter lens for birds. I nearly fell off my chair. My wife would have me selling my expensive lens if she heard such things🤣
