Thank you for this tutorial! And thank you for acknowledging the comments female percussionists hear from some people. It’s so true! We get back hand compliments all the time. So do female musicians who play instruments like Sax, bass, trumpet, etc. Well… time to shed some more! Love the lessons! 🌺
Love Sheila E!! #1. One thing to remember Eric! Left handers have to adapt to a right hand dominant world.. Most of US have to become nearly ambidextrous just to get through the day. So as a percussionist I've learned to play all of my rudiments and patterns with a L lead and R lead with hands, sticks and mallets. I've been teaching that to my students too for about 50 years. R/L BALANCE! I encounter a lot of HS age drummers who drum well with right hand lead, that cannot keep a smooth clave or shaker rhythm with the left hand. As s conguero on 3 congas I sometimes switch the tumbao llrlllrr to rrlrrrll to change up the low tumba during the bridge of the song. just to add a little different tone color. Try it some time. LOVE the channel, I share it with my students! Respect man YOU are doing GREAT! Charlie
Sheila E. playing with Tito Puente was what got me into hand percussion. Hey smile is the most electrifying thing about her and her talent is one of the best. She's in fact, my hero for sure.
Born in 1952 in Sa Francisco ca. Heard all the top Latin bands / Latin ROCK bands!!! Being born & growing up in a Latin household it was AUTOMATIC/ loved them and saw them all. Tito Puente/ Santana / Malo / Azteca / Top / War / just to name a few. Thanks for bringing back all the fond memories from the 60’s to present day. WILLY CA 😎🥁🌹
No brother !!! Sheila E is NOT LEFT HANDED. !!! The reason Sheila E sets up like that ( left hand style ) is because when she was learning to play from her father . She watched her dad play sitting in front of him so see saw a mirror view …. And as we all know, watching yourself in a mirror.. Everything is opposite… So when you raise your right hand up in the air. It looks like your left hand.. So that’s why she plays congas and timbales LEFTY STYLE. However, If you’ve ever noticed, when she plays a drum kit or bongos . She actually plays right handed !!!!! I asked her about it at a Drummers for Jesus clinic In Dallas Tx ..
Greetings from beautiful Cornwall, UK, Eric. Truly it is great to have you back and lovingly giving us your experience, exuberance, knowledge and humour. This is a very challenging pattern with its heavy dependence on the no-dominant hand. You are so right about going outside of your comfort zone - it is the only way we can learn anything useful in our lives. I have already started on this one and I'm going to nail it...!! Love your new set -up and it must be much easier for you now to have it all 'ready to go'. Although , I must say that your sitting-room 'studio' had a cosy, at home feel about it. Onwards and upwards..... Love , respect & thanks. Blair.
Hello Eric! There we are again. Great tutorial about Sheila's tumbao. In the last few weeks i was exercising a similar tumbao on 5 congas, i love how it sounds. A few years ago i met Sheila in Belgium and i was also invited on stage during her clinic. I'm taller than Sheila however standing next to hear i felt tiny as a ratoncito.. A real lady with high positive energy and incredible rhytmic talent.
I remember when I was young I went to a concert in Stockton CA and i saw Sheila play with her whole familia Pete, Coke her brothers she was ten at the time very talented and I got to go on the stage and talk to her and shake her hand lots of calluses on those hands so practice practice practice thanks for the great vid my brother late.
Eric, I gotta LOVE it.. These videos are so well-done and so freakin' useful as well as entertaining. I really love and admire how you pay informed and heartfelt homage to the great artists whose material and technique you share, and the tradition that it all comes from. You do it brilliantly, artfully, and effectively.. Many thanks bro.
Hey Eric thanks so much for your amazing channel! I’ve played for 20 years as a timbalero in a Latin jazz orchestra and have limited experience on congas.. after some recent medical setbacks I’m finally playing again and I’m super excited to have learned this in a half an hour tonight! I can’t wait to learn more patterns.. thank you bro so very much!
Well said! And well demonstrated as ever, of course. Your step by step instructions are always so clear and helpful. I haven't got 'round to trying it out yet but it's well worth it. I'm just glad you didn't try to get us to actually play left handed though!
Super tribute to Sheila E, Eric! She's the best, as well as the rest of her family. And good for you for sticking up for women players! But I have a dummy's question about the tumbao... How do you know each one of her moves when she plays so incredibly fast?? Do you watch videos of her in slow-motion? Once again, thanks for making our lives a little brighter with each video, buddy! - Mark
Sheila E is the bomb!!!! Bro! That was dope! I can hear the 3 - 2 clave over that tumbao... sweet...k eep holdin" it down in my hometown... DMV baby!!!!!!
Thanks for this one Eric! I saw Sheila two summers ago at the Hollywood bowl. She was 59 years old then and blew me away! Yes, she is beautiful but damn she has some fast hands! I've been playing percussion and drums for 40 years and she can play circles around me. So fast! Many men percussionists don't don't like to admit this, but the truth is that Sheila e is better and faster than most of them.
Eric, She's great but also look at who her Dad is! She also played along with her Father with Tito Puente. Sheila Cecelia Escovedo (born December 12, 1957)- Oakland, CA
Fantastic break-down on this tumbao. I have wondered... how do you figure out the precise strokes on your break-downs? To put your work into perspective for us mere mortals, how long, how much repetition, does it take for you to get it? Thanks for all you do Eric.
I've noticed 60% of my top 5 favorite drum kit drummers in life are like Sheila (Left handed playing right handed setups, (Sheila learned as a small child sitting "opposite" her right handed father, so I assume these other left handed players learned & played on right handed setups from the Get go). Namely Thee Undisputed heavyweight drumming world champion (Produced first Pete & Sheila Escovedo album "Solo Two") ~ Billy Cobham (2) Lenny White (3) Sheila E (4) Michael Walden (right hand) (5) Tony Williams (Right hand) Left handed people are very "Geniacal" especially in the drumming world / * = I made up my own word "Geniacal" (As in that is a "Geniacal*" Idea) LMAO ~ Keep up the good work home slice
Aloha!! Was that you at Puna drum circle? I was following your percussion leads . The dead giveaway is the gourd necklace. Sorry we didn't get a chance to talk. I looked back and you were gone. Maybe next time
I need to practice this ill Sheila E. shit to get my tone right on my left hand ... has been my issue all my life! and I've been casually playing since before I can remember! lol
Eric love Shelia E looooove her love her style she has been my inspiration for a long time plus enjoy playing her tumbao now I will go & do my own tumbao the MayLyn tumbao will post on UA-cam at a later time!!! Eric have a question for you are the meinl marathon exsclusive series congas any good? I love them they sound waaaay better than my LP Aspire congas plus more affordable for me to buy. My Aspire congas don't sound bad watch my video of me playing my LP Aspire congas for my video is the best here on UA-cam of just LP Aspire congas! But I want professional congas to go with my LP Giovanni galaxy congas hope this is a good choice to get the meinl marathon exsclusive series congas! Another question I have is how can you get your congas to stop ringing for I have this problem with my LP Giovanni galaxy requinto, quinto & conga HELP how to stop the ringing plus will switch to steer heads that you use love the sound of them waaaay better than what I have but will get when can afford. Another question I have is an you use any palm oil for your bongo conga heads to save the life of them? Would appreciate hearing from you Thanks MayLyn
She explains why she plays like this in the video: "Guitar Center Sessions: Sheila E - Like Father, Like Daughter". TLDW" She watched here father from the front when she was a child and copied his playing, but mirrored.
Great Work Brother .. but you could play that pattern easier with a right handed setup .. right now your playing it left handed .. just saying ;) .. Suerte y Aché Siempre !!!
She was a judge on the TV show Battle of the Bands. There was only one latin band during the whole contest. She gets up from her judge chair during their song, goes on stage, takes the timbale solo from the bands timbale female player and had the nerve to say that she didn't see any musicianship from the band. Sorry, I have no respect for her after her poor musicianship.
I Love It. I'm Constantly Learning. Sheila E. Is The Reason That I Play Drums & Percussion.

Absolutely agree. When a song has a KEY change or modulates, like during a middle 8, a TONE change is necessary to reflect the melodic modulation.
Sheila E. playing with Tito Puente was what got me into hand percussion. Hey smile is the most electrifying thing about her and her talent is one of the best. She's in fact, my hero for sure.
Uuuufff man!!! Sheila E. High quality!!! She's unbelievable! And your way of explaining tremendo!
