  • The last clip will truly shock you😳 Have you ever been out on the North Sea before? It is well known as one of the most dangerous seas in the world. It has wild storms and foggy winters. Because the sea is mostly shallow, the currents are strong and often pull in different directions. Not only one of the most dangerous in the world but also the coldest (it has an average temperature of 17°C in summer and 6°C in winter)🥶

I was on the Polyconfidence and was thrown out of my bed when that big wave came through. The CCRO on Brent Bravo said that it listed over, filling cabinets fell over, chairs flew across the room and the list held for about 10 seconds. He thought it was going over, if another wave had hit, they would have. This was a concrete legged rig designed to withstand the 100 year wave and because they weren’t sure, they added a further 50% of tolerance. It ripped Kennedy grating off the spider decks and imbedded them in the floor of the deck levels. The Polys bridge said that they could see below the bottom of the leg bumper bars as the trough came and they the wave bashed the main deck.
They reckon they had 4 near to 100 year waves within a 6 year period all in the Brent basin. Good times!

    I've been there.
When I was in the US Navy. My ship was assigned to do an oceanographic survey of the mountains on the sea floor in the North Atlantic and the North Sea (at least, that's what the crew was told). We even crossed the Arctic Circle (making all of us Blue Noses).
The North Sea was calm for us, but the Atlantic? 😱
We rounded the northern tip of Scotland and were warned that a hurricane awaited us along our plotted course. We were told to take shelter in the Irish Sea to wait out the storm, and then we would resume course around the western coast of Ireland on our way to Spain.
However, our captain was nuts. He didn't want to do as ordered because he said it would add 3 days to our mission. So we headed straight into the teeth of a hurricane. (The captain had only ever served on submarines his entire time in the Navy, so he didn't have the slightest clue what he'd ordered us into.)
Meanwhile, the rest of us were VERY worried. You see, our ship wasn't always a Navy boat. It had served as a small cargo boat, hauling bananas in the Caribbean. It did that for 25 years, and then the Navy bought it and converted it for its new purpose (which it did for 5 years before we got our new captain). So we headed into a hurricane on a 30 year old banana boat.
The guys on the bridge kept check each time the bow reached the bottom of a wave trough.
    "One... two... thr---"
And the bow would pop back up above the surface again. That happened with regularity, until...
"One... two... three... four... five..." (they started freaking out) "...six... sev---" And the bow popped up again.
And every time we'd go over the crest of a wave and started down the other side, the propellers would leave the water, and the whole ship would shake from the force of the props spinning while out of the water until they would bite back into the ocean.
About an hour into the hurricane, the aft watch was due to change. The guy that was already in the watch compartment had been on duty for 8 hours, and the captain insisted that he be relieved, despite the man saying that he'd rather stay on duty instead of putting anyone else at risk getting to the compartment.
The replacement had 5 harnesses and 10 lines secured on him. He had to go on the deck and close the deck hatch before he could open the hatch leading into the section of the ship for his duty watch.
Under normal circumstances, it would have taken him only a couple of minutes to do it. However, it took him over 15 minutes to do it while the storm tossed the ship around like a toy and tried to wash him overboard.
When he did get to his duty post, the guy he was supposed to relieve decided to not risk his life to get back into the main body of the ship.
To cap it all off, the captain got angry that things got tossed around quite a bit in the storm, making a mess that we had to clean up. Oh, sure, we had all of two hours to secure our bunks (and the locker parts of them; I secured my locker well, so none of my stuff ended up scattered all over the place), stuff in the ship's store (where we could buy cigarettes, toothpaste, etc.), etc. before we hit the storm, but it was a bloody HURRICANE, that he defied orders by sending us into it.
(Personally, I think he was pissed because he got in trouble by defying his orders and could have gotten us all killed.)
I don't know what happened to him because I got off the ship once we reached Spain, heading for my next duty station.

Holy. Great read. Glad you’re alive and well! I’m from Glasgow in Scotland, but my Grandparents retired and moved to the Shetland Islands way up North (most northernly point of the UK). We used to travel up on the overnight ferry between Aberdeen and Shetland, stopping at the Orkney Islands along the way. That stretch of water is no joke. Especially between Orkney and Shetland, as there is a point where the North Sea meets the Atlantic, and it is hellish. As a kid I remember finding those trips REALLY fun during bad weather. Counting the waves in 7s, feeling your body weight sink lower and lower, and then feeling it spring back up. It almost feels like no gravity when trying to walk! Out on the deck at night, staring into the deep black, incredibly powerful water. You can’t really grasp just how potent Earths forces are unless you experience it for yourself. As a 28 year old adult… not so fun. At all. It scares the absolute shit out of me to be honest with you! Thanks for sharing Jim, and thank you for your service, not only to your own nation and military, but to mankind! You must have one massive set of balls on you. Lol. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤝🇺🇸

Thanks for the compliment. Now that I'm retired from teaching in elementary schools, I'm trying to make it as a novelist and writer. So you telling me that my comment was as great read really helped my ego. I enjoyed reading about your experiences, as well.
I don't know about the balls. I was stuck on the ship with no way off, unless I wanted to jump overboard (we were all in the same boat - pun intended). Still, it allowed me to explore: Nova Scotia, Sweden, Amsterdam, London. This last was a walking tour of the city. It was supposed to be a bus tour of London, but the driver dropped us off on a corner in the city at 9am, told us to be back at 9pm, and took off. Still, I got to see the changing of the guard, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the Tower of London, etc. I still have the little guide book I bought from back then. My time in the Navy also afforded me the chance to check out Chicago, Orlando, Charleston, etc. I was bitten by the traveling bug at a young age - my dad was in the Navy, too, and we ended up in Honolulu, San Francisco, Denver, Charleston, and smaller places.
Now, though, I'm an old coot living on my teacher's pension. I still do a little exploring locally, mostly in the mountains of north Georgia, here in the US. Mostly, I read and write.
      Scotland...
One of the many places I've always wanted to visit! Sadly, I never made it. The closest I got was as I stated in my first comment. I'd also like to visit Ireland, England again (I want to visit Herriot country - I'm a big fan), and the Philippines. Ah, well, maybe one day, should I win the lottery.

The Wellermen - "Hoist The Colours" (Official Lyric Video)
    ua-cam.com/video/qlrvzLRgzdc/v-deo.htmlsi=miTTdr4wCAXenpHp
    The King and his men
stole the Queen from her bed
and bound her in her bones
the seas be ours and by the powers
    where we will we'll roam
    Yo ho, all hands
    Hoist the colors high
    Heave ho, thieves and beggars
    Never shall we die
    Now some have died
    and some are alive
    and others sail on sea
with the keys to the cage
    and the Devil to pay
    we lay to Fiddler's Green.
    Yo ho, all hands
    Hoist the colors high
    Heave ho, thieves and beggars
    Never shall we die
    Yo ho, haul together
    Hoist the colours high
    Heave ho, thieves and beggars
    Never shall we die
    The bell has been raised
    from it's water grave
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
    We call to all
    pay heed the squall
    and turn yourself toward home
    Yo ho, all hands
    Hoist the colors high
    Heave ho, thieves and beggars
    Never shall we die
    Yo ho, haul together
    Hoist the colors high
    Heave ho, thieves and beggars

Remember that these are the same seas that the Vikings sailed across and mastered 1200 years ago in wooden longships, wearing wool clothing and cow skin shoes.

Had the pleasure of being in seas this rough.
Truthfully speaking, for myself and all my mates, we all thought this could ne our last trip.
Anyone, that tells you different, is lying.
    The sea is your master.
The thrill of this at the time, you think, im never gonna do it again.
But yet, some of us, like the adventure of it all.
Crossed many seas in my day.
Not for everyone, but if you go to sea, you expect this occasionally.. Being born and raised on the ocean coast.
The calling was natural for me.
