Taking stock of how starting a Booktube channel has changed my reading.

- First half of the year in numbers is easy(ish). 73 novels read, a similar number of short stories, 68 (?) videos, and a dozen lost weekends.
But has starting a channel been a net positive?
Turns out short answer is "yes", but I managed somehow to stretch it to 20 odd minutes...

Thanks for warning us against THE WATERS OF DEATH: Just by that you've performed a great service through your BookTube participation!
MAGIC CARPET ran some excellent stories. The sports pulps have never appealed to me. I may be missing something there. I think Frank O'Rourke may have written for those magazines, and I really like his westerns. The pulp deep dives are fun.
Nice first half-year overview! I enjoy your posts. I've thought about launching a channel some day, but I have no idea how some of the BookTubers manage to read so many books within a month, a week, even a weekend!
Hi! I’ve not read nearly enough sports pulp stories to come to a conclusion, but there are some writers from the adventure, western and sci-fi genres who make the leap to writing for them.
As for fitting all the books in, that’s easy: I have no social life 📖
You're echoing a lot of my own thoughts as a booktube newbie! As another commenter also mentioned, I think for most events, I will just read one book and not worry about fully participating.
Yep - it might be as simple as doing the events, but not following the prompts..
Terrific reflection on this first half of the year. I distinctly remember that you did come and welcome me as soon as I arrived. I’m awfully glad you did. 😊 I love your deep dives into the pulps and also into sources available from Project Gutenberg for various events. You bring such a wealth of knowledge to all of your videos. I certainly appreciate it. I hope that you are able to access the British Library soon. That was just horrible what happened there.
Thanks Pat - I think I have MJ to thank for that - we were on the same "Supporting Small Booktube" episode!
@@GenreBooks23 Yes! And then I took down my channel the next day! 😳
@BookChatWithPat8668 Well, I’m glad it wasn’t permanent. 1270 subscribers can’t be wrong! 🎉
@@GenreBooks23 Thank you, Gavin.😊
Fabulous reflection on the first half of the year Gavin. Your channel has very quickly become one of my absolute favourites and your Project Gutenberg research makes you my go to guy for recommendations. Love your wry humour and thoroughly enjoy your content. 😊
Thanks Debs, that's very kind. Here's to a fund second half of the year!
Great start of the video. It reminds me of my sister who went to have a talk with those people because she was curious. She talked their ears off and they finally said to her that this wasn’t the place for her and showed her the door. lol.
Haha!
I'm rethinking my participation in events, as well. I was finding that I was resenting what I "had" to read when I wanted something completely different:) So when the "Sports" event came around, I put my foot down. I have zero interest in sports so I decided it was perfectly OK to skip that.
What I'm doing from now on is to choose 1 book in an event that interests me. Then if I have the time or inclination, I can read more books on the subject. So, for example, for July I'll be reading Rogue Herries (if I like it, I'll read the sequels). It will be Quarter 3 in Historathon. Since I normally read a lot of history, this is a no-brainer for me. And then for a new event -- Giallo July -- I already own several books that would fit the theme and that I haven't read yet.
This should leave me the time to read whatever I please, when I please.
Agreed - there's such a lot of events, I think it has to be a choice to do it rather than a feeling of obligation. That being said, if the month were longer, I would have loved to join the "Rogue" Gallery...
Me, 'Sometimes I talk to myself.' Me, "OMG same!."
And that’s fine, as long as you can maintain consensus!
For some reason I have not been able to post though I tried several times. So here it goes.
Nice "audit" joke. And thanks for the mention.
Thanks for persevering!
Welcome to the GarbAugust club (did I hear that correctly?)
Indeed! Going to try a “spicy” pulp and plenty more. TBR in the next couple of weeks: waiting to see if there are prompts!
@@GenreBooks23 That sounds great.
