  • Just like Studebaker, DeSoto, Willys, Edsel and others, they don't make Pontiac's anymore. What did we do wrong as Americans to get to this place? In 1971, 58,325 Grand Prix's were produced. That was such a pretty car. I agree, it was a modern classic at the time.

I turned 11 in 71'. But I remember these cars. Heck because of my Dad driving one of his friends he ended up buying a73 GP. Now that was the year things started to decline but not as much for the 73' model. It had leather seating vs vinyls and real wood in dashboard. And it was very very torquey. Fast mother and smooth. When I was old enough to drive that was the car I drove. You guys know what I am saying. Many of you have the same memories.

What a fine looking machine! And always liked the "Pure Pontiac" theme that Pontiac used back then. Had a certain catchy, alluring mystique about it. When I was a kid my neighbor bought a brand spanking new 1971 Grand Prix, 400, dual exhaust. Beautiful exhaust note! I always thought Pontiac was GM's most exiting and innovative division! So sad to see GM let Pontiac go!

Yes. So sad. Yet the last couple of decades were pretty disappointing compared to the great cars of the 60s and 70s that Pontiac produced. The gov. should not have bailed out GM. That brand is still strong. Hope GM brings it back.

The music conveys purpose and performance and fine engineering. Advertising sure has changed.

I had one of these. Crème with the 400. I miss it and would love to find one again

Great commercial. I always wanted one, the neighbors had a 71 or 72 with the 400 and dual exhaust. It sounded SO good, and was a copper/orange color. I would dream about it. As far as the question.... people got fat, lazy, and complacent. Nobody to blame but ourselves, yet, it is always easier to blame others.

You'd think the Oldsmobile marketing folks would want to capitalize on a 1936 Cord sharing a garage with their Toronado for 1971

My first car. 110 mph was no problem for the engine, but steering/handling suffered. In its defense it was 15 years old by then. Still I would love to have it back today and restore it

My dad had a 71 but it had one feature I've never seen on a GP, and that was a tilt leather rally steering wheel like on the Trans Am. I must have been an option cause it had it and the speedometer went up to 140 instead of 120. That rally wheel made a huge difference on the cars appeal, it was much enhanced with that feature.

That was the fringe of the golden age of the motorcar and motorcar advertising. This country is fat, lazy, complacent and apathetic. Its reflected in everything that we do today. People wouldn't understand the art behind this ad. They wouldn't understand the joy of driving even an ill handling beast like this vehicle. Nevertheless, I would like to have one.

When i was a kid there was this car parked in the tall grass and it seemed like nothing was wrong with it --perhaps it had engine failure but it stayed in the same place for many years in a small town in South Texas . One thing i loved about it was the door handles.. it was a long straight line that had a raised area, all chrome metal and you pushed your thumb inward and the stick-like hsndle popped outward to then pull to open ..
Boy ,those designers were simple but uniquely making beautiful things back then

because people liked the extra room. I'd take a big car over a small car any day of the week...that's why SUV sales are so strong in the USA, people like the extra room the length has to offer

What happened is that GM produced crap during the mid 70's till the mid 90s. Roger Smith dismantled the Alfred Sloan plan, the divisions adpoted badge engineering, each marque lost their uniqueness... even Cadillac came out with some turkeys... V8-6-4. The Cadillac Cavalier...err... Cimarron, downsizing too much, quality problems, (remember the X cars?) The notorious GM anti theft system that made the car think the owner was stealing it? You alienated owners.. thats what did them in.

Too big for their britches, too big to fail & too arrogant to see the Japanese were whipping their ass consistently right before their eyes for decades..which leads me to believe they really didn't give 2 shits...why should they they're still there...with nothing I'd buy.

GM stopped being led by engineers and designers. Marketers and accounting took over in the 70s. The finance people by the 90s. It happened across US industries.

      Aryan Asylum
Aryan brother that's your opinion. To me what I think timeless means is in any decade, century, or millennium the 71' GP will still be what it was designed for, sharp, smooth and fast.
