The man Driving the Chevy in the towing commercials name is Floyd Veech. He drove a logging truck in Montana and was in the Guinness world book of records in the 70s. He carried this load with a Mack Diesel both up and down the mountain logging trail. You could Circle the front of the rig and touch the bumper of the last set of logs. On the first attempt they ripped the back axel out of the Chevy so they added the overload kit. So Chevy made a deal and put him in the commercial. I still have original 8 by 10 photos. I'm his nephew. He's dead and I'm old now but he was a good man. Glad you like the commercial. I still get a kick out of it.

I just wish they did not include a mortgage. And try and find a single cab eight foot bed on a lot today. Nope not there. Just four doors and a damn sandbox trucks now. As far as I am concerned if four doors are more important then a bed, buy a damn SUV.
did you really feel the need to include the units? It's quite obvious that when referring to engine sizes, liters, cc's, and ci's are the most common measurements. My gut tells me that you just wanted to feel like a smarty-pants.
ChaotiX - I am sorry you did not find the "Humor" in my comment. It was simply a poke at 18 year old kids these days that drive around in their new trucks blowing black smoke from their Duramax Diesel engine, and think that they have the most powerful truck in the world... and not having to state the obvious that this oldskool chevy truck with a small block or also Commonly known as a "350" can do a lot of work. So yeah I did intend to leave the comment just as i typed it out.
Yeah I actually kind of gathered that you were addressing him after I left the comment. But to his defense, I actually mistyped 305 instead of 350, and he was correcting me.
It's amazing to look back and see trucks pulling huge loads with engines that made as much power as Honda civics make today.. Obviously it was possible because of the gearing but it is still interesting to see
Back in WW2, a lot of troops used to rig Jeeps to become road-rail vehicles. So if you think this is insane (and I agree), Jeeps rigged to tow real trains probably would top that.
IrishThunder2020 so true. They're adding more and more bells and whistles to truck and jacking the prices. I remember when tilt steering and cruise control were big features. And electric windows.
Most “truck guys” now a days drive their luxury 2020 Silverado high country to their desk job and back into their garage. No need to worry about pulling anything with modern day trucks
You are correct. But my dad has a 2020 Silverado 2500hd and he mostly uses it for hauling his race car. Even then my dad says when it hauls the car it drives like it is not there.
Saw one of these trucks at an estate sale a few years back. It only had 1050 miles. The Owner passed shortly after he bought it and his wife let it sit in her extra garage for decades and didnt touch it. The fuel lines were shot but other than that, it ran like a champ. The buyer was very private but allowed me to sit in it after he was done restoring it. Thing was immaculate. He had bought it for his wife.
It wasn't nearly the load in the ad, but I used my 75 K20 with the 350 & granny 4spd to clear an intersection of a C65 flatbed, loaded with sand and cement in bags, pulling a trailer carrying a tractor with a scoop in front and a backhoe. No telling how heavy it all was, but it wasn't light. When I hooked up and started to pull, the pickup started bouncing. The cop figured it wouldn't work, but I popped the transfer case into low range and put the transmission in granny low and away we went. I pulled the kit and kaboodle through a big intersection and into the parking lot of the bank on the corner. That pickup was the best truck I've ever had, bar none. After I wore out the engine, I rebuilt it and turned it into a working hot rod. Sure wish I still had it. BTW, the truck in the ad is either a 73 or 74. Automatic with the abominable full time 4WD. It appears that the driver pulled the shifter to low and likely the transfer case would be in low lock position.
The square body style trucks are considered to be the most durable pickups GM ever made. Back then a lot of farmers used a 1/2 ton truck for their work. Now they use 3/4 tons. These new ones just won't hold up like those old ones.
Nobody is willing to work their trucks because they cost a small fortune, they're more tall luxury sedans than trucks anymore with the short bed/extended cab anyways
Wish they would make similar trucks again. No thrills, manual trans ,floor shift transfer case, rubber floors, two tone paint!!!! Gun rack ...I'm in heaven
The "train" was actually pushed from behind to give the whole thing momentum. Once you get going you can do this with any engine/car above a certain capacity. Oldest trick in the book.
The Prepper I remember my dad buying a c30 every time he got a chance then new trucks started to come out and he bought a ford and everything went shyt
NFS4LFE my dads 2000 k2500 has a 6.0 liter vortec with a 4l80e trans and it pulled a mini excavator on a 20 foot dump trailer which together weighed about 10-15 tons over multiple dirt roads in 4 low in northern Pennsylvania. The only thing it had done to it was timbrin blocks and a cherry bomb. The transmission got a little hot but did not really come close to overheating. But I agree that truck would be in such sad snape after that.
i have a 1973 chevy cheyenne and i through a 20 pound tool box in the back and guess what this amazing thing happened no dent. who would've thoght that making a truck bed out of old mtn dew cans wouldve put a hole the size of texas in the back

Chevrolet quality at its finest. GM really cut down on the Flint, Michigan assembly plant where this work of art was produced. Most new Chevy full sized trucks come from Silao, Guanajuato Mexico. THAT PISSES ME OFF. Build em here or don't build em at all!
@0:21- look at the frame twist holding all the weight. I mean don't gwt me wrong, it's impressive- but I wouldn't try it on my own truck if I owned one. We have a much smaller commercial vehicle like these that we call utes- some were rated as much as 1 tonne back in those days, from something around 65% - 75% of the size of this truck. Good ol' Holden 1 "tunna"... 😊 Would love to own one these days. It'd be a turbo BBC before it even knew what was happening it to. The full chassis is begging for some upgrades and it'd be perfect to handle big amounts of hp. You can weld the cage straight to the chassis. Makes it every easy to tub the rear end! Ohhh, so many benefits to building a ute or an American truck...
When trucks were actually good and there was a thing called skill where you don't need all these things on your truck to drive without crashing a 30k-40k truck at the CHEAPEST... but the older vehicles weren't very fuel efficient unfortunately. :< but that's because they were built like tanks and to last :D
My dad had one of these trucks and we pulled a huge trailer with the complete track assembly off a d9 g cat dozer from Staunton ill to Springfield to get them replaced. Was a ride.
Man, that’s a beauty right there; they don’t make trucks like they used to. I see plenty of those vintage trucks in my town, and they’re so cool to look at, and they’ve all got some character to them.
This looks like something my daddy and brother would have tried we've always been a Chevrolet family Chevrolet is without a doubt the only model that would be able to pull that load
Today, the driver runs out of the coffee shop with his soy latte, adjusts his man bun and capris, hits the remote for the retractable side steps, and the autostart for the heated steering wheel...
What is really sad here is the fact that they no longer build such tough, top quality trucks anymore. Those who own one made by Chevy from the last 10 years or so know exactly what I mean by that. Models 2010 and newer would fall apart on site if the same feat were attempted again.

This "outsourcing to Mexico" started with CEO Roger Bonham Smith (1981-1990). How do we reward the men and women of GM who build high quality cars and trucks? Outsource. Bring it home to Detroit! Start making your own parts again, rebuild the city that you bankrupted. I will never deride Detroit. It isn't the city's fault that CEOs are greedy toilet scum.
chevy0500 you'll never see it back in detroit unless it's A) a non union shop. The fact that the union insists some flunky deserves $45hr just to push a broom around is a huge reason why the big three started pulling the plug. 2) nafta finished the job the uaw and the crooked democrat politicians started.

It is a 454/400, you can see the little red 454 badge on the lower right hand corner of the grille. The narrator didn't say this truck HAD a 350, he said they came standard with a 350. He then says "this truck is equipped with options that you can order through any Chevrolet dealer" (as in the 454/400 combo).
It's a commercial that actually demos the product to the viewer and doesn't try to sell you on vibes, and music, and being cool. I want to go back to whatever year this was made.
Diesel engines wish they had the power of a big block, they can't pull a greasy string out of a cats ass without a turbocharger and putting the same amount of boost through a 454 will net bigger gains than any diesel could hope for.
+ImpactJunky ... Diesel engines make more power with less revolutions and with less fuel than a gasoline engine. Why diss the turbo ? If you take two 454's, one with a turbo and one without a turbo, the turbo engine will make more power and get better mileage. A turbo on any engine is a plus.
@LincolnTek Sorry dude but my 73 Mopar 400 big block gets way better gas mileage than any diesel truck. And I never said anything negative about a turbo, but a roots two four barrel supercharger is undeniably better for torque and towing. Not to mention the fact that a blown big block looks and sounds 10x cooler without making all that stupid smoke. Just watch a few trucks pulling sleds at an event, the coal rollers can't hold a candle to a supercharged gas V8.
Gotta love old trucks (accept the Ford's of course, they were never good) That's an old Chevy gaser, that gallons per mile, but you can clearly see it is being pushed, the rear wheels on the pickup aren't even moveing, though my first gen dodge diesl has hauled a semi trailer of hay (pulled with a semi 5th wheel dolly) And we've hauled 3500 gallons of water with the durimax, i just took a while, but one day I hooked a powerstroke up to the same trailer, this was considered a suped up powerstroke, and it could not move...
Ya cool story bro you see the truck straighten out when it starts moving, if it was being pushed it would crush it more. This aint HD... you aint gona see the tire tread on the rear wheels...
Dang, I wish I could go back and buy a couple of these. I bought a 79 Square body back in 89. I think one of the best trucks I had. Since then, I had a 90, 04, and now my 19. Nothing compared.
Saw this ad when it came out. 22 new Ford pick-ups later. Still have my last 4x4 Ford Truck for 21 years. It's a 4.0l 4x4 Ranger that will out pull this 64 3/4 ton. and gets 20mpg.

The 350 is a great engine, but I didn't think it was capable of this.
Also, love how the frame was bent, but they didn't give a fuck! They still showed it, just to demonstrate what it _can_ do, then they openly say you still shouldn't do it!
What happened too the '70's?..

+BloodstainedSinner amazing truck, we had one, but it does rust quick
+adam2000z no, it was at like 6 mph, not every truck can do that
+adam2000z yes it does matter that it's a chevy because of how chevy made their engines. they had a lot of torque
Before he starts the truck look at the line between the cab and the bed.
That frame is crying in pain, but still manages to hold together.
I'm sure the "heavy duty springs" also included a few extra cross members that were welded in too.
That's a Chevy for you though, the only truck that could have done it

"Oh you got a 3/4 ton with a duramax? Well I got a 187 ton with a 350"
did you really feel the need to include the units?
No no not you, that Scott guy is who I was mentioning. Jesus Christ I thought that was obvious
Yeah I actually kind of gathered that you were addressing him after I left the comment. But to his defense, I actually mistyped 305 instead of 350, and he was correcting me.
It's amazing to look back and see trucks pulling huge loads with engines that made as much power as Honda civics make today.. Obviously it was possible because of the gearing but it is still interesting to see
This was freakin' insane.
+mindlessgonzo I'm so so sorry but I have to. Hi.
Back in WW2, a lot of troops used to rig Jeeps to become road-rail vehicles. So if you think this is insane (and I agree), Jeeps rigged to tow real trains probably would top that.

@@traciweisenbachCITB yeah but their potential is wasted.

Love the background music.

Now the frames are about the thickness of a nail clipper.
They don’t make them like this anymore.
What is really sad here is the fact that they no longer build such tough, top quality trucks anymore. Those who own one made by Chevy from the last 10 years or so know exactly what I mean by that. Models 2010 and newer would fall apart on site if the same feat were attempted again.

He then says "this truck is equipped with options that you can order through any Chevrolet dealer" (as in the 454/400 combo).

That was using a 350 V8? What if they'd use a 454 V8? I bet it would haul just a bit more easier. ;)
Hahahhaa
need diesel perhaps
Chevy all the way.
Gotta love old trucks (accept the Ford's of course, they were never good)
That's an old Chevy gaser, that gallons per mile, but you can clearly see it is being pushed, the rear wheels on the pickup aren't even moveing, though my first gen dodge diesl has hauled a semi trailer of hay (pulled with a semi 5th wheel dolly)
And we've hauled 3500 gallons of water with the durimax, i just took a while, but one day I hooked a powerstroke up to the same trailer, this was considered a suped up powerstroke, and it could not move...
Ya cool story bro you see the truck straighten out when it starts moving, if it was being pushed it would crush it more. This aint HD... you aint gona see the tire tread on the rear wheels...
