I am a Huskie fan, we just have to admit that they got spanked. and Geno can acknowledge that SC is playing good ball and thats why they are #1. He's struggling to give the SC coach any credit.

Aside from not giving SC much credit, I think Geno was just brutally honest about where his team is right now given the circumstances. They’re good enough to still win another conference title in given how weak the conference is, but it’s highly unlikely for the Huskies to make any significant noise in the tournament. The lack of depth, paint-presence and playmaking/shooting around Paige will cost this team and it’s unfortunate. Feels like we’re saying “Wait until next year when they’re at full strength” every single year….

Geno focused on the shortcomings of his team and was clearly thinking about what he needs to do to get ready for the balance of the season. He did say that SC played their brains out. Which they did. And yes SC is a better team. A good coach should be focused on the future after a loss like that.

I give full credit to the gamecocks but you can't ignore the fact that UCONN is without 5 players, and not just any players - they are all highly skilled. However, injuries are a part of the game. UCONN had some great runs in the past where they had their most important players available and were dominating all over the place - now it is their time to take a backseat. It's good for women's basketball too.

also, how is missing 2 starters "had their best players"? SC's biggest strength (and that goes for pretty much every team that has shown this type of dominance in basketball) is their depth - they have 3 players who score in double digits and 4 more who score almost 10ppg. Not a single player has to play more than 27.5mins - you wanna tell me that's no factor in their success? @@SKeletor99999

Congratulations to SC. They were great. But remember, Geno brought Dawn under his teaching when he was coaching the Olympic team, before SC started their rise. I’m sure Dawn would agree she learned a lot from him through that relationship. And, when Vic Schaffer was pulling his hair out about MS, he went to Geno for help and Geno was glad to be of assistance, in order that the game of basketball could reach more parity. After Schaffer’s discussions with Geno, Mississippi State became a much better team and started winning. And, when UCLA was not even a blip on the basketball scene, Cori Close came to Connecticut and spent time watching Gino’s practices, then took what she learned home and implemented it with her team, and today UCLA is a contender. Geno was quick to share his experience with these coaches, quietly and taking no credit for these coaches subsequent successes, but has continued to push for more parity in the game. He understood that this would lessen UConn’s chances to run away with the trophy every year, but he also apparently foresaw that, without solid competition, women’s basketball would never grow in popularity with all BB fans to where it is now. The common denominator here was Geno, just sayin’. Let’s see what happens next year when UConn gets back the other half of the team, the 4 starters and terrific Aubrey, all sitting on the bench this year with injuries. Thank you Geno, and your team.

I'm a SC fan, so I don't watch many UCONN games....however, my biggest takeaway from this press conference is that it sounds like he refuses to accept change. If the starters are having a bad game, are starting off rough, why not try other players on the bench. If the bench never gets a chance, what happens when the starters foul out or become injured (hope all the players remain healthy, I do not wish harm on any of the players, however, sometimes it happens.) I hope the coaching staff sees the untapped potential in their bench, they could possibly be a game changer.

My wife and I are 15 year UConn womens bb season ticket holders. I read a number of comments about Genos lack of explicitly saying what I just wrote
I heard a number of references to USC being a great team, UConn needing to play near perfect to win, and needing USC to play below their best for UConn to have a chance.
I heard his comments as typical Geno - talking to his team thru the media. He finds out if they fight.back from his deserved criticism.

South Carolina is THE best team in women's college basketball and has been for 4 years with a 174 - 9 record since the 2019 -2020 season. He was missing some players and we were missing our starting center for two games. NO excuses. Go home.

How didn’t he give them credit he said they were a good team lol. South Carolina hasn’t helped UConn become who they are. UConn has helped SC become who they are which is why Dawn gave them those flowers. Like she said UConn got nothing out of playing this game year after year, but obviously SC playing UConn changed their program. It’s not the same scenario. Geno doesn’t have to give flowers to seeds he already has planted. If he didn’t want SC to ever beat UConn he would of been took them off of UConn’s schedule.

You're either deaf or dumb or both. He said they were a much deeper and different kind of team. Pretty much saying how good they were. He has said in the past how good of a coach she is. Christ does he have do do it every time. They are missing 5 players not one idiot. But hey congrats to SC they have put together a great team. I love you m=o=r=o=n=s who dont really know what it means to have half of your team missing not just one player. It would be like taking PaoPao out (Fudd is out) Watkins out (Patterson is out) Cardoso out (jana Al Elfy is out) Kitts out (Griffin is out) and name me another wing for SC take her out (DuCharme is out) See how that would deplete SC's Lineup. Now take those SC players out and have UConn at full strength except for the Center. Think it would make a difference. Thats how injuries have held back UConn this year. It makes a huge difference. I took the UConn players and pretty much matched them to the type of player SC would lose if they had the season ending injuries UConn has had. Possibly the reason UConn is just a good team not a great team. SC is a powerhouse and truthfully can afford not to have Cardoso for a game or 2 and not miss a beat. But like I said if you cant see that then maybe your just an SC fan and really dont know much about the game at all. Vegas had SC 10 point favorite I jumped all over it giving the points I personally did not think UConn had much of a chance. Turns out they had 15-20 wide open looks and just couldn't knock the shots down. I thank them for missing because I won quite a bit. So it's not an excuse so much as it is a reality. Everybody sees it but you so what's that say about your knowledge of the game!!! By the way I really love SC's team.

Why is he complaining about lack of talent?
All these young ladies were top 100 hoopsgurlz recruits.
The issue is most people we consider great coaches are actually coaches with great talent.
It's easy to win when you get the most talented players in the country year in and year out.
What's harder is developing a raw player with potential but is not quite at the level you want them to be.
This is where you find out who is really a good coach and who is really good at recruiting.
These young ladies are not going to get any better sitting on the bench.
Because regardless of how much talent you may or may not have chemistry is very important.
Teams with lesser "talent" are not winning with lower rated players by luck.
It is by player development and team chemistry.
What most people don't appreciate about coaching is that it requires more skill, talent, and intelligence than players have who actually play the game.

@@USCjorge If you follow UConn you’d know that he has taken responsibility in press conferences for coaching errors (after Notre Dame). In this case, his comments were dead on. He recognized his team’s limitations, what they’d have to do to be more competitive, and how they got themselves in trouble, how SC took advantage of every error, before after halftime starting to turn it around. He commented about Shade missing a lot, without in the least bit being critical, for example. His weakness in my mind is how he puts things sometimes about individual players, such as yesterday about Ice. Instead of saying they need her to play better the next couple of weeks, he could say they need good games out of her (not that it will make much difference in her play, but it could). If you listen to Dawn Staley, she can be just as critical, as well as complimentary, just like Geno.

So amazing how, in the human family, there is a great fascination with hatred toward excellence. Human beings want to see whatever is excellent crumble. I wouldn't be surprised if, already, there is an entire culture of people wanting, aching for South Carolina to fall flat on their face. Follow it all through sports history; the great teams in any sport were hated. Why wouldn't we want the excellent to continue being excellent? Why wouldn't we want South Carolina to win 12 more national championships? Instead, people are already hoping South Carolina, UConn, Stanford, Tennessee never win another one. What if South Carolina wins 4 or 5 in a row? Humans will be saying how bad it is for women's bb, and someone has got to put a stop to South Carolina winning every year. Why can't we all rise up and say, "Win 20, Dawn!" But no, when excellence is around us, we want to kick it, stomp on it, yell at it, curse it, blame it, hope it breaks apart. That attitude is crazy to me. When UCLA had Kareem, even the NCAA had to get in on the hate - they outlawed dunking. Of course, that only made Kareem a better player. But the point is, hate whatever dares to be better than good. The attitude is kind of "It's ok to be good, but don't be great." Humans seem to get absolutely crazy when something is great for an extended period of time. Seems like we should be outrageously happy for success, instead of howling with glee for failure.

Coach Staley has been in the coaching profession 23 years. In those 23 years she has won 2 national titles. Calm down! I'm not saying that to take a swipe at Coach Staley. I'm saying that because it's so damn hard to win a title. The coach out at Stanford has the most wins of any college coach, ever, men's or women's. Coach Vanderveer has won 3. It's so difficult to get all the pieces working together. Why mention Auriemma? We all know what he's done. I'm hoping Coach Staley might win 12, 14? Why not? Vanderveer is getting on up there in age to keep doing this much longer. She's not going to eclipse 11. It's going to get harder and harder, because of how easy it is for players to change schools if they get upset - for any reason at all. Just like free agency in pro sports makes team cohesion more difficult; the portal in the NCAA makes creating a team more difficult. Thing is though, stars added together don't always make the best team. Coach Staley is proving that this year. She lost a lot of talent from last years team, but she has this team playing some powerful basketball. We'll see. We'll see.

Certainly would not have made much of a difference in this game, but incredibly disappointing that he and his staff have completely FAILED to develop and motivate their 6'6 player, Deberry, to, at the very least, be a defensive rim protector in even some small capacity. What a bust! His plan to have AE sag off Ashlyn Watkins to protect the rim and prevent SC put-backs got shredded. Hard to believe that Amari Deberry couldn't have helped just a little to make that game plan a bit more effective. And Muhl, a senior, continues her pattern of MIA play when facing top level teams. So, they'll go back to the Big Easy and win the Conference. Then what? SC showed UCONN (after learning from UCONN) the blueprint for future years. Question is will GA and staff embrace the necessary changes to make the program competitive against the better/top ranked teams? Because if he doesn't, down the stretch - future March Madnesses - they will be just a bunch of girls playing in a grown women league.

He should wear diapers. He is a basketball coach. Give me a break. No one has asked him why he never had the stones to coach the Men.

He’s not surprised. They have 5 players out. He knows what he’s dealing with.

South Carolina is a good team with only 2 National Titles (maybe 3?). UCONN has ELEVEN! Get over it!
All of our National Championships were coached by the current award winning staff. No team can stay in the top forever and we'll come back for sure! And, if UCONN stayed at the top, it would not be good for the game of women's basketball. Without UCONN there never would have been a UCLA team, a IOWA team or a South Carolina team. Get over it!

What are you talking about? We know all about UConn's history. We're talking class, respect and sportsmanship here. He showed none.
