  • Wakayama Castle, located in the heart of Wakayama City in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, is a hirayama-style castle built on a terraced hill, also known as Torafusu Castle due to its position on Mount Torafusu. The Kinokawa River flows to the north of Wakayama Castle, serving as a natural moat. Along with Matsuyama Castle and Himeji Castle, it is regarded as one of Japan’s three major contiguous flatland mountain castles.
Wakayama Castle once served as the residence of the Kii branch of the Tokugawa family, one of the three Tokugawa families governing the Kii Domain (also known as the Kishu or Wakayama Domain). The fifth lord of Kii, Yoshimune, and the thirteenth lord, Yoshiaki, later became the eighth shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune and the fourteenth shogun Tokugawa Iemochi, respectively. The castle was designated a national treasure of Japan, but it was burned down during an air raid by American forces in World War II. The current structure of Wakayama Castle was reconstructed in 1958, with significant financial contributions from Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic, who was born in Wakayama Prefecture.
The domains of the Tokugawa families were vast, and the current area of Wakayama Castle is only a quarter of its size at its peak. Areas once within the castle’s grounds now include the Wakayama City Hall, Wakayama City Fire Department, Wakayama District Court, Wakayama Family Court, and Wakayama District Public Prosecutor's Office, as well as former official buildings, schools, commercial facilities, office districts, and the Wakayama Central Post Office. The planned size of the castle was even larger than what was actually built.
Below Wakayama Castle lies a free and mini Wakayama Castle Park Zoo, home to animals like penguins, meerkats, capybaras, and alpacas. However, due to animal welfare considerations, I personally do not visit zoos or aquariums, which is why I did not record this time.
