  • Himeji Castle, located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, is famously nicknamed "White Heron Castle" due to its distinctive white exterior. It is one of Japan's most symbolically significant and best-preserved castles, designated as a national treasure and a special historic site by the Japanese government. It was also one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is included in the list of Japan's Top 100 Castles. Due to its excellent preservation (the castle's main keep is one of only twelve existing original keeps in Japan), it is often referred to as "Japan's premier castle."
The earliest structures of the castle trace back to 1333, constructed by the Akamatsu clan. During the 16th century, the castle underwent major expansions by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, with the final major structure completed in 1609 by Ikeda Terumasa.
Himeji Castle showcases traditional Japanese wooden architecture and defensive features. The castle includes a towering stone base and a multi-tiered wooden main keep with numerous small floors and hidden doors to enhance its defense. The internal layout of the castle is designed to confuse intruders, featuring multiple gates and meandering passageways.
The castle has undergone several restorations, with the most recent major restoration occurring from 2009 to 2015. This restoration primarily involved reinforcing the structure and restoring the white paint of the exterior walls. The surrounding area of the castle, including the moat and gardens, was also refurbished. Due to its proximity to the Kyoto Film Studio, many period dramas and movies have been filmed here, or have used Himeji Castle as a symbol of Edo Castle, including the 1980s series "SHŌGUN."
