The line "The same old cliche's, Is that a woman or a man" I remember being little, 4 or 5 and hearing people say that at restaurants or the supermarket when ever a guy with longer hair walked in...it was a common derogatory remark in the 70's.
This song kills me...in 03 my dad calls and grandma isn't doing well...I pack my car and leave denver for ohio....I get a call about midnight...she didn't make it...I pulled over, had a moment...when I turned on the radio this starts...I was almost to des Moines, iowa ..."on a long and lonesome highway, east of omaha"...kills me every damn time
This to me at least has to be one of Bob Seger's cornerstone songs. You certainly don't have to be a rock star to feel lonely, misunderstood and too far from home and I believe that's why this song is easy to relate to.
I love this song. Back in the late 70's a buddy and I hitchhiked across the country. We were long haired hippy types. As we traveled thru Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming etc, we lived the fourth verse. We would stop in truck stops for a hot cup of coffee to warm up. You would always get the stares from the truckers and the comments, "Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can All the same old clichés: "Is that a woman or a man?" And you always seem outnumbered, you don't dare make a stand" Then the waitress would come up. You've seen her "Flo". She had the beehive hairdoo, too much makeup and perfume, all the while chomping on her gum. We'd ask for a cup of coffee and she would pour us some from that pot that's almost empty and has been cooking, or should I say burning for hours. Then we would head back out and stop at the next truck stop. And low and behold there was Flo again. I never did figure out how she would know where we were going to stop next. Good times.
This song is an iconic rock classic. There isn’t a garage band or hometown rocker who hasn’t played this song. It is practically mandatory that one learns this classic. So glad you like this, song and truly understand the lyrics he was laying down.
Took my son to see Bob when he was 3 back in '96. We have seen every tour since. Bob played his last show Nov, 1st of last year. "Every ounce of energy, you try to give away" is exactly how he played every show.
You actually made tears in my eyes I'm a musician and you understand what we go through. We play on the stage but we're actually tired. I love you for knowing how we go through
During one one my College English classes I wrote a 10 page paper on this song, and you have nailed it. There is so much wrapped up in this song when you begin to break it down!
India, you got this song completely! Bob Seger is an awesome artist! That said keep the Seger coming! Suggested titles, "Hollywood Nights", "Main Street", "Rock And Roll Never Forgets", "Old time Rock and Roll", "Against the Wind", "Beautiful Loser", and "Like a Rock", "The Famous Final Scene"! There are more, but this post is already long enough. Thank you! Have a great day!
I enjoyed “like a rock”.. until it was used in that dang pickup truck commercial!! Ugh.. now all I see is a truck rolling over some terrain when I hear the song- hate when they do that!!
I love how you don’t just hear the music you feel it. The way you get into what you hear is amazing. You’re so open and understanding to the lyrics and the sounds. You’re awesome!!!
Roll Me Away, Against The Wind, Her Strut are just a few of his hits. The man is a legend. I'll be here watching for any of his songs that you review. I think you will truly enjoy his music!
I've watched a lot of reactions to this classic song from my youth and ur reaction is the deepest I've seen...u really get it...Bob Segar is amazing...so many songs to listen to...
I love the song nothing but I'm off that album because it's recorded in the bus and you can hear the bus engine during the song. Totally life. Love it! Peace!
So glad to see you checking out some Bob, these three songs are just the tip of the iceberg of one of the greatest Classic Rock artists af all time! From his Viet Nam protest 2+2 to his 2002 duet with Kid Rock "Real Mean Bottle" and everything inbetween... BTW, check out "Sunspot Baby" if you want a really good reaction video...

Bob actually started in music in 1961 ~ He was well-known and had a following regionally, but he never gained national recognition or success until 1976 with his Live Bullet and Night Moves albums when he was already 31, an age when most artists have already seen their day come and go ~ During those early years, he "gigged" almost 300 days/year out of a beat up old station wagon and then a van earning the nickname "road warrior" ~ Turn the Page in '72 was 11 years in to his "life on the road" trying to make it, so the vibe you get is real ~ He almost threw in the towel a few times, but always found himself back on the road ~ Do yourself a huge favor and listen to Live Bullet from start to finish ~ You will hear a man and a band on a final mission to make it, and make it they did!!! There are not many bands better than Silver Bullet Band, they are always tight, almost flawless.
I love how you hang on to every word of a song and analyze each part thoroughly... Just wanted to let you know cause there's been several other reaction channels I've seen that don't do that enough if at all.
1st saw Bob Seger circa 1966-67, when he was :Bob Seger and the Last Heard".....maybe when Glen Frey was in the band....the were doing small club and college circuit in southern mi
*Like a Rock* and *We've Got Tonight.* Great music makes you feel. *Her Strut* is a good one too, even it it didn't have quite the same level of commercial success as his biggest hits.
Probably around 1995 I was doing the dishes with the radio playing, I will never forget how some song I had never heard before instantly got my attention with that sax. Later on I had a buddy who had helped to deliver a piano to Seger's house. They stuck around while Seger ensured everything worked properly and then fed them afterwards. Check out "Against the Wind" for some truly beautiful work on the piano and some damn good lyrics, Seger sure knows how to tell a story. Also, as I see recommended below I'll recommend "We've Got Tonight." Good lyrics there as well, naturally.
so nice, so real, thanks for sharing...i have been on that road, east of Omaha, big space, more than enough time and space to think it all thru....thefeeling of that engine doing work somehow lulls you thru, lie heart beat....namaste
I graduated from high school in 1983. "Turn The Page", by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, was our class song at the Gordon D. James Career Center in Lordstown, Ohio (although it had a Warren, Ohio mailing address), TEN YEARS after this song was officially released as a single. Annie Lennox covered this song on one of her solo albums (probably the "Medusa" album), because she dealt with the same issues Seger did as a singer and musician on the road. Metallica also covered this song as well (and made a music video for it).
one of my favorite songs ... lot of depth to it. On a different note .. I am an energy worker (healer mainly). It's the same for people like us who help others. We give so much of our energy away in helping, and the more you give the more they want to take. They don't want to learn what you teach them so they can do it themselves, they want to come at you day and night for you to help them with what's going on at that moment that they can't deal with. And when you say 'no', or you say you're tired, or unavailable, they suddenly hate you because you're not feeding them what you give out. People are friendly as long as you give out to them. The moment you need something or need to keep your energy for yourself, they 'turn the page' and walk away with anger.
"Is that a women or a man?" - The official video for Turn the Page, has flashbacks to 1970's Seger, pre-haircut. Then it's easy to picture him walking into a truck stop somewhere and getting stares and rude comments. We, of course, thought he was turning into an old man when he cut his hair. Nobody had any idea he'd still be singing that song 45 years later. Turn the page.
Yep. Here's a little excerpt from an interview with Bob "I did 12 years as a longhair. I read the Keith Richards book, which was right in the same era, and they were out with long hair in the South, and there were a lot of unfriendly people. That particular song is written about the north. Wisconsin was a lot more unfriendly than the South was. (Laughs) That’s where I wrote the song, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It was about an actual event, in 1970. We had these two really big roadies. We were traveling in this single truck that had sleepers over the cab. Everybody would take turns driving and sleeping. We pulled into a truckstop, and our two big roadies were sleeping at the time. (Seger and the musicians) wander in, and we’re all skinny little guys. These big traveling salesmen started calling us girls and longhairs and all that. That’s where the song came from. The next night, we played Madison. While I was waiting to go over to the venue in my hotel room, I wrote the song. I literally wrote the whole thing and put it in a little tape recorder."
The sax player was named Alto Reed......in this song, he would climb way up in the rafters or was suspended high above the crowd....BTW, Bob is singing this LIVE! Amazing. "Mainstreet" is my favorite!
Listen to Bob Seger’s rock ‘n’ roll never forgets. We used to listen to it back in the 70s at parties. One part says sweet 16 turns 31! My girlfriends and I used to say oh my god can you believe someday we’ll be 31, that’s so old? LOL! We are all now 60! 🤣
Me too! As well as “Night Moves!” That one brings back some very nice back in the day memories for me-except.. we were in love..-working and practicing!!☺️😉
Hearing it live truly blows you away. Saw him in Atlanta and sax player put on a harness and safety wire and jumped off first balcony doing backflips while playing this song!!
Girl you are playin’ my old jam back when I worked in NASCAR. Being on the road! Night Moves by Bob Seger is awesome! Totally different ban but .38 Special... rock... my fav is “Hold on Loosely!” Excellent song!!!!
Yes girl! Bob is such a legend! Sooo many amazing songs. Finally got to see him live in person on his last tour and I’m so glad I did so with my dad. A lot of Bob’s music runs deep in my dad’s side of the family, and has a personal impact on my dad especially. You should definitely check out Roll Me Away, Like A Rock, Mainstreet, and my personal favorite The Fire Inside next! Can’t wait to see more Seger reactions! 🙌💯
He's such a genius. Unfortunately I was unable to see him live. It seems to be difficult here in Europe. But I still got time to wait. Thanks for reacting to this legend. But you have to listen to "Against the Wind", "Roll Me Away" & "We've Got Tonight"? If not, do it. You wont regret it. Love you girl, keep on rockin' !!!
I love watching reaction videos, especially to music I grew up listening to. I was very young when this song came out, maybe 5...6? Anyway, even at such a young age, I can remember how powerful the lyrics to this song were (and still is) to me. Seger is such an amazing story teller 💗 His music is legendary.
You are correct...it is a sax! The great thing about Bob is he brings in instruments you don't hear more of today...the sax, the piano, the keyboards. His Silver Bullet Band is so talented and always on point. The version of Turn The Page you reacted to was his LIVE version...absolutely amazing singer & song writer. I really think you will love to react to Bob Seger since his songs are beautifully written and have so much meaning. I don't know him to have a bad song!!
You nailed this one India. Glad you finally found Seger... He's one of those artists that used to take YEARS between releasing albums and it showed... No "filler tracks" and almost every song was meticulously written and delivered (sans two that were written "for alternative purposes"). If this genre was your thing, you ALWAYS got your money's worth out of his albums and his long-awaited concerts. Some of today's "Hot artists" are here and gone in the same time it took Bob to release a 12 track album and the results were evident.
Bob has so many great tunes. I like that he's honest in this one about how the road wears you down. Touring is hard. For that one hour-90 min you get on stage you spend 23 to get there. Traveling, can't sleep a lot of time because you're on a bus on the move. Eating at truck stops and fast food. Doing radio/tv promos and stuff in every city promoting that night's show. Away from family and home for months at a time. It's tough. But the reward when you step out on that stage and you get the energy off those fans is enough to keep you going. One of the best songs about touring is Jackson Browne's Load Out/Stay. He's an artist you should check out. Lots of good songs on his albums too.
Night Moves was the first time I heard of Bob Seger and the song transformed my musical tastes. I was so blown away by the personal depth of his experience. The album led me to Live Bullet and could not stop listening to the smoky voice that sang as he knew what was in the depths of my heart. Thanks for this.
The line "The same old cliche's, Is that a woman or a man" I remember being little, 4 or 5 and hearing people say that at restaurants or the supermarket when ever a guy with longer hair walked in...it was a common derogatory remark in the 70's.
That along with a sign saying "Hippies use back door" which was of course locked.
Still get that today in some places
FACTS
Yep, heard it about my dad.
Bob Seger is such a great story teller in his lyrics

The atmosphere this song creates is amazing! Probably my favourite song of all time.... Bob is a genius.
I saw Bob Seger live in Detroit Michigan, in 1975 where he made the best recording of this song....I was 11 years old!! What a concert for a first!!
Famous Final Scene. That one makes me ball every time.
During one one my College English classes I wrote a 10 page paper on this song, and you have nailed it. There is so much wrapped up in this song when you begin to break it down!
This song brings back so many memories. Some good, some bad. Friends gained, friends passed, and friends lost. Thanks for playing.

The sax is so awesome & makes this song even more great. Love Bob! Love your reaction!
Man was incredible live....his music takes me back....soooooo many memories. Not a bad song in his catalog...master story teller.
Bob Seger is amazing...so many great songs!
I remember as a teen in early 80's. A friend and I sang this song one night on my front porch. I think it's the only song I ever sang word for word.
Roll Me Away, Against The Wind, Her Strut are just a few of his hits. The man is a legend. I'll be here watching for any of his songs that you review. I think you will truly enjoy his music!
My favourite Bob Seger song..........and the sax......OMG....once again.......so loving that you are loving my music......THANKS, KEEP IT UP.
One of my all time favorite songs. ONLY this version.
Gonna take you a week to get through all the epic Bob Seger.
Jamal AKA Jamel heard one Seger song and got so hooked, he did twelve Seger songs in 4 days!
More like a month!!
@@jimfrederick3907 Jamel got totally lost in Seger LOL
@@acedawg278 4 days exactly!
Longer than that.
I've watched a lot of reactions to this classic song from my youth and ur reaction is the deepest I've seen...u really get it...Bob Segar is amazing...so many songs to listen to...
Bob's autobiographical song; Jackson Browne did the same with The Load Out/Stay. Great songs from both.
I love the song nothing but I'm off that album because it's recorded in the bus and you can hear the bus engine during the song. Totally life. Love it! Peace!
Thanks, India - I'm so glad you found the live version of this -- you caught the whole feeling of the song -

Love your reactions. Please do like a rock.another great song from Bob
It is a pleasure to see your reactions (with fresh eyes and ears) to some of my favorite music. Thank You!
Saxophone by the great Alto Reed.
Who does the sax on Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street"? They should pair up.
That's a great name for a sax player.
@@jimfrederick3907 Raphael Ravenscroft. That would be an amazing pairing, but unfortunately Ravenscroft passed away.
I knew Gerry passed away, but I didn't know about Ravenscroft. So sad. Thanks for the info!
His real name is Tommy Cartmell. He started using the Alto persona during the Night Moves album.

I really think you will love to react to Bob Seger since his songs are beautifully written and have so much meaning. I don't know him to have a bad song!!
Your analysis and reactions are heartfelt and Wonderful !
Nailed it!,.. love Bob Seger
This is one of my all time favorites!
Beautiful woman beautiful music
Loved your reaction❣️ Heartfelt ❤️ and spot on! 💕
You are an absolute treasure, happy to have found your channel
One of my favorite songs. The emotion is just amazing.
P.S. Alto Reed on sax has been with Bob Seger since the early 70's more please ☮️
Gary Kelly …Love Alto!
And that's why we watch you, cutting to the bone, great insight...
Love this song.
Perfect reaction! You have it so right!
I'm a ball buster at heart. Don't understand how any of these songs are your first time. But your flusterations are super cute.
I saw him live last year he sounds just like that live awesome show
Greatest reaction...you brought it home.
This was great India. You went deep quick on it
India, the comments that you shared around the 5:30 to 6:30 reminds me of another entertainer's song called "Shooting Star" by Bad Company.
Love this song!! I love you reacting to my 70s and 60s music. You are always so expressive.
“Her Strut”, please India! I can’t wait for this one and “Night Moves” ...,for sure!! Sooo many back in the day sweet memories! 😜😉. 💖💛💖💛💖💛💟☮️
