Very helpful. I have a newer model where the motor parts were fine, but the issue was that emergency shut-off buttom. I didn't realize quite how it worked at first--that there is a button on the pull-down handle that inserts into that shut-off hole. Now I see how all I needed was to add new and thicker foam. Thanks so much.
EXACTLY the problem with my TORO (over 15 years old), intermittently running, I could bang on it and get it running, but over time required more and more banging LOL, finally quit. I kept cleaning the switch thinking that was the problem, but after watching your video I pulled the brushes (still lots of life) and cleaned them, the rotor (commutator?) was quite black, so then held 400 grit sandpaper against the copper colored rotor (commutator?) where the brushes run and spun the motor slowly until it was shiny again. Now it runs like brand new. Thanks a bunch for making this video. THUMBS
@@daryoushnamiranian4399 i dunno! This is a really old one. If my safety switch goes bad I'm just going to bypass it. Then I will just drill a couple small holes and put safety screws to hold the screen guard in place over the spinning fan (adjusted to high setting)
@@marisalynnbeeble5201 you MIGHT be able to solder it... A replacement brush would definitely be easier, but might be harder to find if yours is as old as mine. Contact Advancecarbon.com and see if they can help
My Toro 51618 made a really bad noise today like it sucked in a rock. I shut it off, disassembled it and the motor will spin but it feels sluggish. Should the motor spin freely with my fingers?
AwesomeI I tripped a gfci during use, and when I set the blower down, the cover came loose. I thought I had burned it out. Didn't realize it had that safety switch (there's something to be said about reading the manuals, right? No need to when you have UA-cam. Back in the saddle again. Thanks.

Moving the springs fixed it and saved me $80, thank you!!!
I need the bottom cover. Saw your video and pressed the switch and it works. TY for very informative video.
PLEASE NOTE: Newer versions of this blower have ANOTHER screw hidden behind the red TORO logo shown at 0:09!
Thank you. I've .been having a hard time trying to get it separated
Thank you for video. I just fixed my blower by following your troubleshooting, the spring did not push the wire into the metal contact. Thanks

One of the copper wires near the spring is severed and frayed. Any fix?

Cut a tiny piece of foam and shoved it in that hole without taking anything apart. Works now. Thanks!
I replace the foam, and it sputtered but didn’t stay on. What type of foam did you use?
Mine had the same problem. Looks like the same model (#108-8989). Moving the two brush springs back into their slots fixed it! Thanks.
You saved me from getting a new one, I had exactly the same problem as yours! Thanks so much!!
5 stars! I’ll have to retrieve mine out of the bushes where I tossed it in frustration first!
I can’t quite understand. Did you say Leatherman? You used a tool to squeeze it wet right?
Thank you so much! this save me for trying to buy a new one. thanks again!
Just saved me from purchasing another. Thank you

I replaced the foam, and it sputtered but didn’t come on. It’s likely the type of foam I used. Any recommendation?
thank you sir... fixed because of you.
Oh heck... I never realized there was a safety shut off switch, now I know why so many of these units failed for me, it was the safety switch!
Did yours smoke inside
cant find those darn brushes anywhere!
Can I use needle nose players?
Mine has been around for 23yrs looks like time to replace my foam piece
Never ever leave it plugged in unattended. One of these burned my friend's garage. All that was left was a puddle of melted black plastic.
Thanks a million.
Thank you it really helped
good video thank you
Next time show foam replacement
