I am looking to do this, hence why I landed here on this video! Really just as a side gig, and just trading some free nights in exchange for photos, and maybe videos (trying to figure out ways to travel more without spending half my income!). I was thinking of just reaching out to some local hotels and asking if I could come take photos, and then if they want to use them they can, free of charge, just as a way for me to build a portfolio. One hotel actually reposted one of my Instagram photos, so I'll probably start with them! BTW, great name! (I'm also Matt, haha)
I has an owner of a hotel ask me to shoot photography for him, and I am told videography is also a huge part of it. I have a $25 unstable tripod and no special lenses to make certain the light is modified...I'm a little nervous and put off the learning of it all week. It's in an hour. & this is my first paid photo shoot in my life.
Super helpful video! Starting to get into hotel photography and still struggling with approaching potential clients. Would you be able to share the message or messages you sent to that hotel that had just changed owner? Would be interesting to see the communication you used that got you on a call with the hotel. :D Thanks for great content!
Great video, very down to earth. Can you tell me about the equipment you're currently using for shoots? And if you have any recommendations for a first time buyer just starting? THANKS!
Thanks so much! I’ve primarily been shooting on a Canon R5 and the RF 24-70 lens. When it comes to just starting out, honestly any camera is a good camera. Any of the canon Rebel series or m50/m6 are great to start with. The most important thing is to understand how to properly expose your camera and getting lighting correct. UA-cam is always a great free resource 🤙🏼
Thanks! For pricing, I think it all depends on the client, your skill, what the gig entails, etc. I always bundle my pricing together and just include travel into everything.
I have always wanted to travel and this is something I just thought of. I am already a social media manager/ assistant and I think this is something I can add to my services. It's just the time and money investment that scares me!
I bought my own equipment to start, but you could always rent as well, depending on what you need. Investing in gear can be helpful and is sometimes necessary though.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Do you have any tips on how to
Edit hotel beds or can point out who has a nice tutorial?
Really cool that you found a job that you’re passionate about and of course on the beautiful island of Maui.
Living the dream, Matt!

Thanks for the advice! How do you should i price myself early on? Would you advise working for free in exchange for a stay or charge on top?

@@WakeUpMatt Priceless advice, really appreciate the info. Do you have any videos on proper exposure and lighting? If not, I hope to see them soon :)
@@MONOTHROPITE I'll start working on that!
great content! i have a question! how much can we charge as photographers for hotel gigs? how to charge for travel time?
Thanks! For pricing, I think it all depends on the client, your skill, what the gig entails, etc.

Are you still doing photography for resorts and hotels?
Not as often, but still doing it 🤙🏼
If I am sending them the portfolio, they would have the content prior to the earnings no ?
The portfolio should just be a sample of your past work to give them an idea of what you can do for them and a reason to hire you.
@@WakeUpMatt what if it’s your first time doing a shoot for the hotel?
Hey Matt. Is there anyway I can message you privately? My daughter is going to school for photography and we are coming to Maui in 2 weeks. Thanks.
For sure! You can find me on Instagram @wake.up.matt and send me a DM 🤙🏼
@@WakeUpMatt perfect! Thank you!
Did you need your own equipment?
