it's sad that the album is so over-compressed. the guitar-tones are better in this demo than in the album-version. there's actually quite a bit i like more about this version.
I don’t hear it. Maybe one or two tiny parts but this wouldn’t fit on either of those albums. That’s why it didn’t make the cut on St Anger. Way too heavy and dark for reload and just not the tempo or feel of St Anger. St Anger was making typical song structure song chaotic and this is like the inverse, making a chaotic idea organized. Just me though. This is a unique sound I can’t compare to prior Metallica.
I was told the Guitar Hero tracks of the album version are not brick-walled, but I haven't downloaded them to give it a try. It may be worth it. There was a guy here on UA-cam who "remastered" the whole Death Magnetic thanks to it, and it sounded like the Black album. Pure awesomeness. Account removed though :(
To me personally i'm a fan of Metallica all the way, I actually love Death Magnetic, its one of my fav albums by them, heavy metal it is what it is, if u complain cuz of the guitars on the album, then ur not a REAL heavy metal fan!

Its a shame they didn't keep them. The harmony on "you lose your turn you crash and burn you walk away!" was fantastic, the vocals soaring over the main riff. Cyanide demo also had some cool harmonies.
I like both. They’re quite different. I wish they’d cut an alternate version, update these lyrics and vocals with the album version, clean up a couple drum parts and it would crush.
realistically i blame the producer. i mean yeah metallica must've agreed to the tone since they were there the whole time, but still. i can ruin my own songs with that exact same tone by over-compressing the guitars. i'm still hoping james has got enough juice left in him for at least one more album with this new-found energy, and hopefully they rediscover their Master-Justice tone.

I think the vocal harmonies make this demo really shine, death magnetic did not have any vocal harmonies at all

While I agree Justice has its fair share of issues, I'm pretty sure he was talking exclusively about the angry, aggressive guitar tone they used.
