    We can feed many food insecure people who would benefit from the food that is wasted because it is imperfect to sell in the supermarket.

    I would say that nearly everyone that is dependent on the corporate food industry is food insecure. It isn't a sustainable food system and it is a system that provides incredibly unhealthy products. It is crucial that policy in Michigan be changed from protecting corporate factory "farms" that are polluting and producing chemically contaminated "foods" to promoting small, more sustainable and environmentally friendly farms as well as urban agriculture.

      If the government wanted to real solutions they can provide grants to turn empty lots into farms or even hydroponics farms and employee low-income or unemployed people. If we can have hundreds and thousands of people driving taxis with no benefits then we can implement a system where people can learn to farm and be paid a minimum wage---this is ideal for people who cannot afford a car or rent a car. There is a demand for organic food in all major cities and there *is* land out there. There are even homeowners who wouldn't mind having people farm their yards if they are paid rent which can help with their mortgage.

      You are correct. Look what happened last year during the pandemic. People hoarding and fighting over food and toilet paper in grocery stores. Smh. The sense of being food secure can be taken away just like that.

    Many times I have heard the store owners say that they carry what the customers want. They say you can carry fresh foods, but many will not buy them, and they get thrown away. I do not believe it is a lack of fresh food, or even a lack of distribution. I don't believe that people cannot afford cheap fresh food like potatoes, cabbage, carrots, etc. I do believe that there is an addiction component to prepackaged food that keeps us fat and addicted to refined starch, sugar, fat, salt, and laboratory produced flavors that far surpass fresh food. Fresh food doesn't "pop" like junk food. Fast food is a party for the taste buds, and fresh food is not. Like the difference between video games and real life. Retraining the taste buds to appreciate fresh foods may be a first step to weaning people off of processed, cheap food. How is that done? I have no idea.

      I tend to agree , it is hard to believe that in a country where 60% of people are overweight and 40% are obèse that so many don’t have access to food , you would see more thin people

      You are absolutely right, Americans have been made addicts, to fast foods, over processed foods and more. Which isn't difficult to notice.
      But stating the problems, the symptoms and dwelling on it without looking into the why this has become the norm will not make the problem go away.
      The problem is so much more deep seated in American culture, ideology, the very fabric of how Americans see as truth and reality, that it is now next to impossible to create the necessary turnaround without having first to undo what is essentially American.
      Can Americans pull it off... without looking to more excuses and scapegoats beyond American shores?

      Also fresh food doesn't last when you take it home. The shelf life isn't very long plus it attracts bugs. If fruits and vegetables last less than a week it's not practical and expensive luxury

    how can we fix this, EASY by having a National Program where ANY good food going to waste from Restaurants and Grocery Stores are obliged to donate it to food Banks and even if prepared meals were donated could be frozen and reheated by needy Families. America used to be SUCH a great "giving" Country but has fallen into "I'm alright Jack..too bad for you" attitude!! Hydroponics is a fantastic way to grow Produce twice as fast with 1/4 the water needed at twice the volume,what's wrong with people not thinking of this and could grow anything in mid winter under glass 24/7!!

    What's worse is when I see people with EBT cards buying 70 to 80 bucks at a time worth of junk food, pop etc whereas me as a newly diagnosed diabetic on my own, can't get an EBT card. The EBT card system needs to be revamped and food based education needs to start happening.

    • @linzierogers6227
      @linzierogers6227 5 років тому

      I am a diabetic and have been so for over twenty five years. Being insulin dependent I must eat properly. I am a senior. Luckily for me I have saved and can afford the right food. I feel sorry for those who can't. I've thought of drawing up a plan to help those without enough food. But when I think of running up against bureaucracy I have to rethink it.

    • @mckellsarah21
      @mckellsarah21 5 років тому

      The EBT system should only cover certain foods that have nutritional value. If these people want to buy junk food then that should be considered a luxury and they should pay for themselves. Gas stations should not except EBT yes they do and people have no qualms about going in there and buying a bunch of crap that they have no business buying. Pretty sad they get an EBT card and take advantage of it when people like you can’t get one.

    • @MK_ULTRA420

    It is ….."a broken food system". Yes, and maybe a broken culture. When feeding kids is a lower priority than cable TV, air conditioning, drug, tobacco, and alcohol usage, or expensive hair treatments, something is very wrong in the basic culture.
    Most of the food shown here is prepared, packaged, convenience food. The same money will buy a lot of rice, beans, flour, corn meal, and other basic staples. Community gardens are a great source of many benefits, including healthy food. Drug law enforcement will show up as more food on the table. Encouraging strong moral values will produce complete families and complete diets.

      I do agree that certain foods are staples and should be included in all purchases at the grocery store; however, many Americans do not have access to dirt to grow due to laws where they live, or the education of actually growing food. I am lucky to live in an area that still has many people gardening, but go to the town 20 minutes away and they are not allowed to garden in some places. Some of the most poverty stricken people who could benefit from growing tomatoes or zucchini or lettuce cannot do so.

    • @randzopyr1038
      @randzopyr1038 6 років тому

      Not to mention that depending on the region, gardening can be very limited due to climate, or due to a short growing season. But I agree that the biggest issue is a lack of basic gardening knowledge. If I had to grow my food the best I could do is get the land cleared and the seeds in the ground and hope for the best.

    Indeed, the system is broken, but I believe that it can be fixed. Adequate funding, and the will of our political leaders in Lansing is key to resolving this problem. I live in SW Michigan (Berrien County), and our situation here parallels what is going on up in Northern Michigan. During the summer tourist season, we maintain fairly well here on Lake Michigan, but when folks leave for the winter, the situation becomes dire for many whose primary income is in the service sector (fast food, hotel workers, etc). Thank you for sharing this narrative.

Pocket change could feed America's hungry for 100 years just one Billion combined between all Billionaires could do this but Greed always gets in the way!!!

      @TJtheHuman 6 років тому +1

      @@Magdalena287 In my experience parents overestimate the job they do and undervalue the job a lare network of professionals and philanthropist does. Even though we may shoot up to higher reading and math levels we are still missing out on social learning and science and other subjects outside the knowledge of the parents. You can't just give a child the 3 Rs and expect them to win. I've also noticed homeschool parents have arrogant backwards ideas about evolution and homosexuality. There are exceptions of course, like if a gay atheist teenager lives in Oklahoma and is harassed by the school. In that case the parent doesn't feel arrogant enough to homeschool, but they live in Oklahoma. I'm not saying parents shouldn't help their children learn, but they shouldn't withhold the opportunities offered by our education system. If you think you are good at teaching your own children then you should start a secular school.
      I recommend looking up the websites of people who survived homeschooling. We have stories to tell about how we have to work twice as hard just to function half as well. We could do well finding jobs just a few years ago when America was booming, but how are you going to predict the future with such a small network?
