- Earlier this year protests began over LGBT-inclusive lessons being taught at Parkfield primary school in Birmingham, pupils were taken out of school, the lessons have been suspended and the protests have spread around the country. So I travelled to the city to speak to the protesters, teachers and activists at the heart of the row to find out whether we should be worried about the return of Section 28? Or if it will strengthen the case for No Outsiders programme, which teaches kids from a young age that it's ok to be different

I wondered how long it would take Owen to blame the far right.
What a vile individual Jones is. He and his ilk are completely to blame for what we're seeing here. He was warned, he wouldn't listen, arrogant tosser.

Anyone who holds socially conservative views on homosexuality and opposes it being taught in schools- Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or otherwise-is not integrating and adopting the overarching culture. In the United States, only 34 percent of white evangelical Christians think that homosexuality should be accepted by society. 52 percent of US Muslims believe it should be accepted, with 57 percent of US-born Muslims and 60 percent of millennial Muslims believing this (compared with 63 percent of the overall population). Clearly, the white evangelical Christians aren’t integrating very well.
Primary school is the wrong time, wrong place. This topic should be at the same time as sex and relationship education which is 14 plus age group. NOT at Primary school. This is not an LGBT issue , it is a badly managed and targeted policy.
I am a Yorkshire man and my children are now adults, but if this had been attempted to teach my children this in primary school I think I would have been asking questions of my MP and Parliament. Questions about the age appropriate time this is being introduced, not that it should be introduced , but at primary school is simply wrong.

Exactly. At the end of the day, we live in a society that tolerates and accept LGBT+ people. Gay people are allowed to express themselves in public after all. Most of the people that are against it say it's inappropriate for kids to learn about LGBT, buts that's like saying people that are LGBT shouldn't be around kids because they are inappropriate (and there are kids that are queer themselves or have LGBT relatives). I don't see what's wrong teaching kids to just respect them at school, school is meant to prepare kids for the outside world after all. Of course, if they teaching then about sex or 37+ genders or whatever then yeah I disagree, but they are not so...

Muslims do seem to be generally homophobic from my experience. It's a minioriy who are not homophobic rather than a minority who are as the head teacher suggests.
From my experience too. Their are gay pubs and clubs I would not goto in London anymore cause of the local population. Things where a bit different in the 90s now it's a risk.

J S Owen’s interviews and this article was to determine the different points of view from those locally affected and involved. I don’t believe Owen’s intention was to tell any of the interviewees they were right or wrong, but just to ask questions. As the end of the video states: let me know what you think, please. He interviewed a range of people and didn’t argue with any of them. Anyway, I was pleased that he didn’t just interview the school or just the complainants, so that why I liked the article. People have different opinions and debate.
Oh, and I’m not a Muslim, I’m a white British lesbian. I don’t really know why it matters - no matter your background, people have different opinions

A lot of Christians have a problem with the "No outsiders" programme as well. They are merely exercising that they do not think that kids at the age of 5 should be taught about LGBT. The muslim parents were and are always comfortable with the gay headteacher in their school, they just don't think its appropriate for them to be taught about LGBT at a young age.
Islam needs a bit of reform. It has many positive aspects, just needs a software update. I can see a future where the values of Islam are not at odds with the values of the LGBTQ community. But it's religion that needs to change. Not the other way around.
LGBT is an oversensitive issue due to it being relatively new. Parents hardly have qualms with their children being exposed to non-muslim friends, alcohol drinking adults, illegitimate relationships in films/TV. But as soon as one mentions the word gay...!

A school should not be a political forum. Identity politics should not be on the curriculum
A child would not even be able to grasp the concept of politics. But in terms of social reality they would understand because they encounter throughout their daily lives

I don't see why any of this issues should be discussed before secondary school. This is political activism in schools.
Young children should not be denied their innocence and not respecting this will ALSO cause mental health problems.
Because kids who feel gay before the age of 11 may live in families where they'd be made to feel bad for it. If school teaches kids that it's okay and perfectly natural, it can help with confidence issues and stops the child feeling alienated
I guess you have studies showing that it would likely cause "mental health problems"? And I'd hardly call this denying innocence, they're not giving them sex ed, they're just reinforcing self esteem and encouraging a mindset that will reduce prejudice later in life. You saw the kinds of books they were circulating in the video, can you really call those harmful or confusing? It certainly couldn't be more confusing than seeing heterosexual relationships all over media and then having feelings for someone of the same sex.

If i can grab the trunk of the elephant in the room for a moment... the religious ideology which the parents (and by proxy the children) adhere to is unequivocal about its moral stance on homosexuality/LGBT. There is a fundamental disconnect between the values of that ideology and the values being taught in schools, and without addressing this head on the issue will remain unresolved.

Yes, but one can hardly show solidarity for "all people" when different sub-groups/tribes/identities among them are exhibiting mutual "hate" and "fill-in-the-blank-ophobia" towards one another. In the end, where, as here, there are directly conflicting goals and moral views held by various different groups, you're going to have to make decisions -- or at least the legal system of the country is going to have to make decisions -- on way or another on some issues.

I live amongst and work with many Muslims and I see changes among the young.
Christianity was once like Islam, but is thankfully now fairly tame in the UK - though sadly not in the USA.

Muslims are not forcing kids to believe marrying 4 wives is okay, Gays are pushing on kids that it’s okay for people of the same sex to marry (and anally penetrate each other).

anyone remember when Scotland introduced LGBT lessons in all schools and basically nobody opposed it or really thought it was an issue and then one school introduces it in England and the uk government sign post that they will introduce it in England and everybody is up in arms.

how should any religion's difference be respected on a matter like this? should a part of society teach kids that some people ought to be thrown from buildings' tops but since we are a minority we'll just hate them until we can have them rounded up and maybe killed or imprisoned someday?!

The protests have done more to than the schools to put more information out there for children to hear things that the schools didn't write ,now the children know much more ( all that shouting the parents did )

The biggest problems with this are the age this is being taught at, at 4-11 you can VERY easily misinterpret something like this, and the other problem is telling then that it is okay to be gay, transgender etc. in all religions as Mr. Moffat says, which IS, or similar to radicalising because you are going against the rules of the religion. Don't say it's okay to be of a certain religion like Christianity or Islam, and be gay for example, it's not, it's clearly in the scriptures, you are not an RS teacher so don't talk about religion.
If 4 year olds are old enough to learn about religion, then they are old enough to learn about LGBT people's existence and they are (in children's words) an ok bunch.
Religion is a belief with a huge reliance on faith so it is therefore a CHOICE.
Being homosexual is not a choice like being straight is not a choice. Therefore, if learning about LGBT issues goes against your beliefs, the burden is not on the LGBT people to change, it's the person with homophobic beliefs that should change.
