I'm shocked, how unprepared people are, when they are trekking, running, hunting, in countries with wild dangerous, animals.
Same here, I'm amazed how people can go into the wilderness without any kind of weapons to defend themselves, I don't care how nice and beautiful a area may look, you don't go without a rifle, shotgun, sidearm, axes, and big hunting knives!

I've done it without anything worse than the odd non disease carrying mosquito and sandfly, or an annoying possum trying to get into the food. Oh wait. You mean where you live. Sorry. It's easy to forget the world doesn't revolve around one country such as New Zealand. But my friend, if you do want a safe place to sleep under the stars, your only concern is to pack the insect repellant. Thankfully nothing lethal except one's own stupidity. Of which there is no repellant but the wise use of education.
I remember when I was a child some old people were talking about wolves, from back in the day when they were not so rare here... "A lone wolf is most likely to attack you than a pack. But, you are more likely to survive the attack of a lone wolf than a pack. If the pack is determined to get you, not much you can do"...
There’s good reason why they were taken to near extinction. Then add rabbies and even a tiny bat can kill you.

Life is short. We are here one minute and gone the next.
I recently met a sheriff deputy who had a stuffed mountain lion in his house. I was there repairing his air conditioner. I asked him about the mountain lion, and he said that he shot it with a crossbow. Before hitting it with an arrow, the big cat had managed to flank a few of the hound dogs and killed them both. After the lion was hit, the group had to chase it down about a mile and half, and then the lion managed to dig his claws into the deputies back while being dispatched. This lion was not even fully grown, so it just goes to show how powerful these animals really are. I personally have seen mountain lions on two occasions. The first one was in Southern California and the second in Northern Arizona. Luckily, I was never attacked. In Arizona I was armed with a .40 caliber pistol, but even if you're armed chances are you will never see the attack coming. If you do manage to pull your weapon in time, it may take a few well placed head shots to take the mighty beast down.
Most animals have at least 3x the muscle density of humans. Which means a 100 lb bear or cougar would have no trouble besting a 300 lb person. An 80 lb chimpanzee could quite feasibly rip the limbs off an average person. (Jane Goodall discovered that chimps actually go to war and do this to members of competing troops, even if those individual chimps were once part of their their troop. She tried to conceal this information for decades, afraid that it would shatter the myth of the chimpanzee that the world so loved)
Why would you sleep without a tent with children so dangerous.
You do it because coddling them away from the realities of life sabotages them over time. There are far more important and meaningful things in Life that just keeping our emotions safe. (And most of them involve the potential for putting our emotions in the moment, in peril.)

It's the same as people watching all kinds of crime shows and still going out in the city to live their life.
A tent isn't gonna stop an animal that wants to attack. Especially a wolf/cougar that's been kicked out its pack. They're desperate to eat and a flimsy tent isn't gonna stop him.

@@The_turbo_engine Remember that animals don't think like human animals! Their instincts are constantly weighing potential risk and gain. And even a flimsy fluttering tent can be enough of an "unknown" to send them packing.
Especially if the noises of humans reacting to last night's campfire cuisine are emanating from inside it!
I've seen shows with the two friends in the cougar attack before. I think she's got a wonderful friend who, even though she had no real plan or means of defense, was willing to get up close and personal with a mountain lion to try and save her life. She never left her side, she never wavered. God bless them both! ❤

To many people unfamiliar with the wild take advice from the wrong people or don't bother asking before they do similar to the family attacked by the wolf , TAKE weapons suitable for defence against wild life in that area regardless of your politics .
@@williamlipsett5772 The problem is lack of self-reliance and confidence in one's ability to interact with nature in a way our ancestors have for millions of years. Most citiots have lost that. Very very very VERY few people will encounter wild areas where a firearm is an actual necessity. And the problem is that people become lazy and over-reliant upon them as a panacea.
People should read some Tom Brown Jr. He is an Apache-trained tracker and scout that has been used by law enforcement to track down some of their toughest cases. He relates one where he tracked an ex-Green Beret who went bonkers. And he utterly defeated him . . . by simply separating him from his "toys" he carried in like some umbilical cord from civilization and then watched as a nature he had zero respect for, beat him down.
Humans amaze me! Mom, out in the wilderness with her baby, says, "Yes, all you men go have fun on the river, The baby and I will just stay here and make dinner." as if she is in her suburban kitchen!!! So glad this child made it through this attack! This is why I would NEVER go into the wilderness with a stupid man with no rifle or gun that he knew how to use!
THEN when his face is literally bitten off they get in the canoe- get lost and paddle around for THREE HOURS as if he was not bleeding to death and in agony. His nose was broken in 5 places and they got lost in the lake for 3 extra hours. They truly define “not outdoorsy”

Yes, I mean our ancestors were SO stupid to go out and live life in a place and time when wildlife was arguably far more plentiful than now. 🙄
But seriously, if anyone cannot understand why people would not hide indoors all the time out of fear of the world that is our birthright, they understand nothing about our species over the past 190 million years. That you are afraid to live life doesn't mean everyone else should be. Even in hiding under your blankets you pays your money and takes your chances. There are FAR more "predatory animals" in the average large city than in 200,000 acres of pristine wilderness.
It's called open face camping where you can see the stars where you can breathe it's actually quite common
@cobainzlady Do you have any idea of how ancient peoples lived and moved around the landscape? (If not I would heartily recommend the book "Red Snake" by George McMullen. It dives deeply into the wooly metaphysical of a psychic medium, but strangely has received the nod of approval from Tribal members who still hold the stories of "ancient times".)
They only traveled as an entire tribe on rare occasions; even the seasonal migrators. Individual and small family-group travel was far more common.
Also, we have no evidence of just how many of these excursions involved campfires. Remember that a fire advertises one's presence to potential tribal enemies.
I know it's harsh, but those ancients who made poor choices and died for them . . . have no weight in this reality. Evolution and Nature has "judged them", and they are not our ancestors. We are not "the children" . . . of those who made poor choices.
Also people tend not to camp in city parks (crime-infested or otherwise) as prime reason, because it's illegal.

I love how the comment sections on these videos are apparently full of survival experts.
Actually I'm a good ways through them -- and there seems to be FAR more people who are more afraid of their own negative emotions than of anything that might possibly manifest itself in any natural setting. And so many of the suffer a "perceptual dissonance" that would have them totally overlooking the 1300 kids killed annually by guns that are there allegedly to protect them (a huge proportion in urban and suburban settings) just to focus on 3 stories of peril in more natural (but to them far more alien) settings.
It manifests as a profound attempt to overlook an imagined danger fed by just a handful of stories, while overlooking a real danger right under their nose that is corroborated years after year by stats.
Yes, I chose the childhood death by firearm stat intentionally because so many people are also deluded into thinking a firearm is their "savior". But there are even more shocking stats about non-fatal shootings and a plethora of other dangers, close calls, injuries and deaths by other causes, factoring far higher in urban/suburban settings that out in wilderness. Even when you factor in per-capita.

Liberals keep screaming for stupid gun laws, so if you get caught with a weapon in certain states, countries, situations, etc… you could find yourself behind bars with huge fines and whatever else they can get on you. I'm going to be honest I didn't even notice that he had a scar until I found out that he was the one that was bite. The surgeon that worked on him must have done a very good job because the scar is really not that noticeable and thank God for that.

That is incredible the wolf is biting and eating his face and he doesn't wake up unbelievable. I said to my Granddaughter, "You guys sleep like you are dead." I am so glad the wolf didn't attack the little boy. Not saying that it wasn't a horrible attack, on the older son. With the little boy, the wolf may have dragged him away. TG the family got away.

As a person who lives in Colorado, a place where you see Coyotes all the time, I can clarify that Coyotes are almost conpletely harmless. We often see them walking down certain streets, and walking in fields often, and they always run away because they are scared of humans. I constantly see them in my backyard, and they usually are only there because they are hunting small animals such as rabbits and squirrels. There is this one neighborhood Coyote, who constantly walks down my street, and catches all of the rabbits nearby. The only thing to really watch out for about Coyotes is rabies, and your small pets. One of my best friends lost her young kitten to a Coyote not too long ago, and it's always a good reminder that they are still predators. If you live in a Coyote area, be aware of your small pets, such as dogs, cats, and other small animals you may own. If you see a Coyote, keep your distance, but don't be alarmed. They are most likely just minding their own business and hunting.

The sound too. Any time a survivor talks about the deep breathing of a bear, the growling of a wolf, or ear piercing screeching from a cougar, that's what gives me chills in my soul.
I lived 1/4 mile from Whiting Ranch and I remember this woman's attack. I spent my teen years hiking and exploring all over those hills and mountains both during the daytime as well as at night, I remember being very shocked by this story. I mean, you know lions are in the area but you never see them of course, and attacks are extremely rare.

Savage - Beast if the wolf had a pack I doubt he would’ve ever attacked the family... he only went for the child cause he was small & being a lone wolf you can’t take on bigger prey like bears, moose, etc. which are what packs hunt. Maybe do some research before making a comment that makes you look uneducated.
I will say tho *very dumb* of the parents to decide not to set up tents in the middle of the woods especially when they don’t know what kind of animals & predators live there.

Nah they never did. They left me out in the woods all alone as a sacrafice to the wolf gods when I was six. They wouldn't let me back in until I was bit. Now me and my brother have matching scars. It's pretty cool

I read a story where a guy was invited to a wild life center that housed a orphaned cougar that now acted as an animal ambassador.
They used to take it to schools to educate kids....but stopped when the animal started eying the kids as it grew up.
Well, this guys buddy invites him INTO THE COUGAR ENCLOSURE to pet it.
Fun fact. Hunter regularly donated deer organs and doe heads and the cougar LOVED to eat deer head...crunchy crunchy, yummy yummy.
Well, The is is petting the cougar, and the cat starts to lick us arm in response....was raspy and hurt a little but he thought nothing of it.
Then, when he got distracted, the cougar suddenly grabbed his arm in it’s mouth, and started slowly squeezing the arm in his mouth.
His buddy was to busy talking to notice this sudden action.
Well, he compared the force of the cougars jaw on his arm like a slowly tightening vice grip.
He looked dead in the cougars eyes (probably saved him from loosing the arm) and swore the cat looked dead back as if to ask,
“So what are you gonna do about this? I got you.....”
He kept eye contact with the cougar, but calmly as possible told his buddy that the cougar was biting him....
His buddy promptly smacked the cougar on the nose with a loud “NO” and thankfully the cougar let go and backed off.
His arm was thankfully ok.....skin was barely broken but you could clearly see the imprint of the teeth.
He concluded his tale by saying after that day his respect for wild animals went up a hundred fold.
He was not mad at the cougar, it was being a cougar. But the experience humbled him.
But he will NEVER AGAIN enter the enclose of a wild animal again, nor will ever own an exotic pet.

Weirdly enough spotted a cougar on a hunting property of a friend of my dads when I was about 10, he was up on a cliff I looked at it and was frightened but tried not to move and it looked at me but quickly lost interest and left. This was shortly after I found oldish cougar tracks thinking “oh that’s cool”. Never will I venture off alone again 😐
@@equarg domesticated cats do the same thing to show affection/play with each other and their owners, even a house cat could puncture skin if it wanted to so clearly the cougar didn't want to. Willing to bet this is just a cat trait. It also licked him first which is not aggressive

I camped in a tent in Iowa once. The fear of being attacked by a wolf Spider was so great I didn’t sleep. I chalked it up to My survival instincts being really strong. I want to live!

Well said. To put it into perspective for people think about this: Someone breaks into your house, you think they may have weapons and see things you don't recognize, what would you do? Defend your home right? In the court of law (depending on the state) you can kill someone who breaks into your home. Just defending yourself by attacking them and not killing them? You will VERY likely not suffer any consequence under the law. So should the wolf suffer for a very similar thing?

I know it's not to laugh about, but really kinda funny too how a beautiful day turned into sudden chaos lolz, really wasn't expecting that to happen. His mower suddenly ran out of gas and the door is locked lol. He's a great guy!

A brilliant balance on all of this weeping and moaning about how dangerous pristine natural settings are! Your child is in far more potential danger in your own home (and certainly while traversing an urban area) -- and far more likely to be shot by the very weapon so many are moaning "was not present" . . . than attacked by wildlife.

I'm glad the woman survived and is okay she is so lucky to be alive . Most people don't survive a mountain lion attack. Once they grab u they won't let go. They will do everything they can do to finish u off. The friend was brave enough to try to save her . Mountain lions dont scare that easily but when u try grabbing thier prey they show u whos boss the friend is lucky it didn't turn on her. Im glad they r both okay . But when ur mountain lion territory be prepared.

Just look at house cats for example, when they're hunting for birds, rats, Squirrels, chipmunks, they will go for the kill and they grab them by the neck and you can see how they do it. Once they're hooked onto something they don't get easily distracted. So seeing how house cats hunt should give anyone a clue how big cats hunt

My grandfather told me this story about a rabid coyote when he was a boy, it went like this. He and his older brother Robert were out chopping wood and loading the wagon with it to bring back to the house for firewood. They must of been 10-12 at the time back in the 40’s. As they were chopping, all of the sudden Robert grabbed my grandpa and they jumped up in the wagon and Robert stood infront of my grandpa with the axe held ready to swing. My grandpa didn’t know what was going on until he saw the foaming coyote. Robert turned to my grandfather and whispered, DONT MOVE AND BE Quiet. They stood still for a few minutes as the rabid coyote kind of just looked around not being able to really see them or hear them because he was in the latter stages of rabies. Rabies affects the vision big time so my uncle Robert knew to not move a muscle. After a few minutes, maybe 2, my grandpa said it just turned and wandered off. They waited for about 10 minutes then stuck out home to get their daddy. He found and killed the rabid Yote. My Great Uncle Robert saved my grandpas life that day.
I really appreciate these videos. It allows me to learn lesson in the safety of home and to be hyper vigilant when I am in that environment. Nature is no joke. It is unpredictable.

Also don't let rare stories stop you from enjoying nature. I am a single mom with 2 kids. This last summer we spent 4 weeks in the mountains in our tiny camper and I had a zip line going over the creek. Just be smart! We also have 2 German shepards, lol.

@@reneluna5340 no she's alive because her friend held on for dear life preventing the mountain lion from draging her into the bush and finishing her off. Just like it did to the male cyclist before. And because of the friends screaming the 2 males came running to help and it was the combined efforts of everyone that finally ran it off. If her friend had turned tail and run she would have been mauled to death quickly. She was completely defenseless. They will be best friends until the end of their days. I can see them now...rocking out on the front porch talking bout the olden days...gossiping and bragging about their grandchildren. This friends determination and love made me emotional. This is the type of friend you want....she didn't hesitate or think about herself. There was no "what if." There was only that moment in time and the certainty that she was going to die trying if she had to💕

The only reason we track down an attack like that is to be sure it's not sick. It's not normal behavior for a lone wolf. Same with all predators up here. We usually dart them now rather than kill, but we Def don't want a virus spread in our packs or cougars.

@@nugnugnugget8717 In their defense, they did say weapon, not specifically a gun. A bat, knife, club, taser, mace, etc. could also be considered weapons. I'm pretty sure an axe is vital when camping in the woods. I don't really know of any survivalists that go into the woods with large predators without at least a pocket knife
Welllllllll, they probably be loved they would be safe especially because most aninals are more scared of us then we are of them, so they where probably under the beliefs of two things. 1) there where no majorly dangerous things around not to mention while out they may not have seen wolf droppings and 2) Wolfe's don't do that much same with many other animals as of them being scared of us humans knowing what we can and can not do. Not trying to sound mean or mad or just rude overall I just wanted to add my own input on it
Another case of people trying to grab a piece of the great outdoors with no common sense. Building a fire, sleeping in a tent, carrying a firearm would have been a good idea. Do these people think they're in a Disney film?!! Worst of all, putting their three young children at risk - unforgivable in my opinion.
This is why there is an advantage of having a kid nearby, so they can scream straight in the wolf's ears so he gets scared.

The sheer number of camping trips in wilderness areas where nothing of this sort happened would be staggering by comparison.
Yet how many times a month (a week?) do we hear about people preyed upon in urban centers, both with and without the victim having a defensive weapon. Few people could even hit a moving person in the dark, let alone a moving animal. The idea that "a weapon is your savior" is just daft.
(Remember the 2016 FBI study on the resolution of "active shooter" situations that found "armed citizen" as a factor in it's resolution as such a rare thing as to be negligible? And which also found that "unarmed citizens" ending the incident were equally represented -- and were far less likely to cause the original incident to spill out into areas where new victims were found and police found containment much harder).
