- India is home to more than 80 million Dalit women, formerly known as ‘untouchables’, who are considered some of the most oppressed in the world.
The recent rape and murder of a woman in Uttar Pradesh state sparked a new wave of anger amongst the Dalit community worldwide.
The BBC speaks to five such women about their identity and lived experience of caste discrimination.

i am also a dalit .. i have seen discrimination.. my neighbour aunty washed her kitchen after my mom entered there..this is sad reality of India
Thats sad bro, i have heard several of these cases and its heartbreaking
Really the least i can do is never gonna make feel a dalit conscious abt his cast when he is beside me.
I'm sorry man, I only read about this on the net, I couldn't believe it true. It's unhuman and offensive towards people. Those people should wash themselves before, not after someone come in...along with their conscience.
What I find weird is that there are African condemning this like they don't do it.
Though maybe not systematic as much tribalism still exists.
My ancestors migrated from other regions and landed in the South of Africa were the Khoisan were. To this day they are viewed as less than even though they were here FIRST just like most Dalits.
Racism is mostly the same way. The bottom line is that this is a global illness that needs fixing.
As someone who's tribe is responsible for so much horror I am sorry that people like you experience it. The first step is to acknowledge it happens

The dislikes indicates that this country can not handle educated dalit women.. Educated Dalit women is Nightmare to the casteist society.
Since I was a kid I have seen discrimination towards dalit, and I condemn it. It is not a issue usually seen in urban side now a days because of benefits and higher position occupied by dalits. But raising and issue about Indian upper cast doesn't tolerate dalit women empowerment is not 100% true. I don't see any validity in your comment.
What I suggest u is that give opportunity to underdeveloped scheduled caste people who haven't had a chance to develop rather than empowering children's of government professors and higher officials kids whose father has already had a respectable status in society.
Let the poor dalits grow recognise them and empower them rather than keep on overfeeding the same personals
According to ancient indian script, there was a massive flood 🌊 all over the earth (which we call Pralaya/Catastrophe).. 👑👑king of that era (King Manu) along long with his 👸wife, 7 Rishi 👨🔬 (Researchers) with there 👩🔬wife, seeds , eggs, and animals boarded a huge boat ⛵.
When the catastrophe stoped, these people started the new era. And a Gotra system was developed to have a long term family track record...each Gotra was on the name of those Rishis/Researchers, example Rishi Kashyap, Rishi Bharadwaj, etc.
So when all the people are coming from the line of those 7 Rishis and all those Rishis are considered Brahman...Then why to spread fake information about cast system and make people hate each other.

This caste system bugged me since long time and I think our ancestors might have created for one purpose and today it is being misused. Think, those days people used to do their work as per their caste. Example, fisher man used to fish and washer man washes clothes, Potter males pottery and some people used to collect human waste and list goes on. So, if you see this people were concerned about hygiene and stayed away. Not because they belong to lower class. But over time it converted to discrimination. Birth Based Caste is a superstitious system, however Varna was the original system, in Varna there was no upper or lower, people chose the work of which they are qualified for and according to Bhagavad Gita, anyone can be a Brahman (Teacher), Shatriya (Warrior), Vaishya (Trader), Shudra (Labor) based on knowledge and skills:
🔹In Bhagavad Gita 4:13, Krishna says that he created different Varnas (Profession) on the basis of one's Karma (Activity) and Guna (Quality).
🔹Bhagavad Gita 5:18 "The truly learned, with the eyes of divine knowledge, see with equal vision a Brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater"
🔹Bhagavad Gita 9:29 "I am equally disposed to all living entities: there is neither friend nor foe to Me: but those who with living sentiments render divotional service unto Me, such persons are in Me and I am in them."
🔹Bhagavad Gita 18:41 "The duties of the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras are distributed in accordance with their guṇas (quality) and not by birth.
Caste is a Spanish and Portuguese word 'casta' which stands for 'Breed' or 'lineage'.
During earlier times Caste use to be Varna (Profession) and based on merit and not by birth, I can give you instances from the ancient times, where a so-called modern day "lower caste" moved to "upper caste", e.g. Guru Valmiki, Kabir Das was from a shudra family but became a brahmin based on merit, etc
and btw Ravana was himself a Brahmin knowledgeable person from Northern India but because of his notorious activities he got punished by Rama (believed to be an OBC if we abide by caste categorization).
Lastly, you have to understand the British motive behind imposing caste:
The Caucasians (Europeans) created Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda, Africa, to divide and control the native population, and for this reason, the Rwanda Genocide occurred.
The same attempts and inequalities Europeans also tried to create amongst Indians by separating Northern India and Southern India into "Aryans" VS "Dravidians" and further dividing Hinduism into 3,000 castes and 25,000 sub-castes.
And also read about Herbert Hope Risley who created casteism, racism in Indian society by one's facial features and skin color, and Bishop Robert Caldwell who propagated the "Aryan Invasion" in Southern India to convert "Dravidians" into Christianity.

Thank you for making this video. Most people outside India think it as a mystical land. Usually international media doesn't talk about the biggest issue in India- caste. Anything I say would not be enough to make the people who don't know caste understand what that is. I'm just saying some points.
Caste is the most demonic, ugly, violent, oppressive, regressive, system you can find in the history of the planet. I am not kidding. The main distinction of caste from other systems like racism is that the Higher castes made lower caste or dalit persons believe that they deserve inequality because it was intended by the lord, god, or the supreme lord. They used force and belief to protect this system for thousands of years. The system still continues. There are protests and reformations, and fight going on, but still millions of lower castes believe this, because it's part of their religion, world view and belief. The higher castes are a minority and lower castes amount to the big majority of Indian population. But their representation in power is also very low. There are some affirmative actions but not enough. Brahmanism will find a way. (I'll say one rule (there were soooo many) which was practised in my state, even in the 20th century. Lower caste persons cannot be near to higher castes. It was decided how much feet one lower caste person should leave between him/her and the upper caste person. For eg., a 'Pulaya' dalit caste member cannot be near within 96 feets of a brahmin person. It's only a tip in the iceberg.)
And caste is as Dr. Ambedkar wrote: It is graded inequality. We have thousands of castes who are graded in the equality/rights pyramid. Each and every caste has an superior caste as well as an inferior caste. They made it that way to lengthen the course of the oppression. It worked! (It's only one reason why it existed for so long, but it is one.)
We cannot talk about caste or patriarchy alone. Both work in an intersectional way. It is brahmanic patriarchy. And the most oppressed group is the Dalit women. (Tribal issue is entirely different from this scenario. I'm not saying it's better. Their conditions are worse. But it's a different paradigm.)
The entire brahmanic(Hindu) literature including even story books are proposing the idea of caste. There would be no book from the Hindu heritage which does not offend lower castes(Dalits, Tribals, and other backward commumities-OBC.) I can defend my claim. I am a graduate in Sanskrit, I am a lower caste person, I've been working on this area for a long term now.
I'm stopping for now.
@Icarus Rex yes, that's the biggest issue, caste would be at 2nd place.
Righty said....
@Icarus Rex That's because of lack of education and HDI . You know where most population , poverty is ? UP state "220 million people" in one fing state , centre of casteism .
@Icarus Rex I don't know what you think education means. How can education be "75 years" old ? Btw stats show family education and family planning are directly related. Govt is responsible for social issues in a developing or underdeveloped countries , social policies include education , family planning , women and child health services etc .
@Icarus Rex Kerela achieved it , lot of southern states achieved it . They got education to rural areas , controlled population , grew good economies , more peaceful cities , relatively less casteism , lower poverty , better govt clinics .

Notwithstanding the institution of castes, there is no country where men rise with more ease from the lowest rank to the highest. The first nabob (now king) of Oude, was a petty merchant; the first peishwa, a village accountant; the ancestors of Holcar were goatherds; and those of Scindia, slaves. All these, and many other instances, took place within the last century. Promotions from among the common people to all the ranks of civil and military employment, short of sovereignty, are of daily occurrence
under native states, and this keeps up the spirit of the people, and in that
respect partially supplies the place of popular institutions. The free intercourse of the different ranks also keeps up a sort of circulation and diffusion of such knowledge and such sentiments as exist in the society. Under us, on the contrary, the community is divided into two perfectly
distinct and dissimilar bodies, of which the one is torpid and inactive, while all the sense and power seems concentrated in the other…
