    Mick, you basically forced me to sell my amp and buy a V40 last year with that Tones for Tache video. Absolutely love it! Built a baltic birch 2x12 with a Creamback H and a V30, and it just plays beautifully. The guys at Victory were more than willing to give me the spec sheet for cab dimensions and give me a custom mod to tame the bass a bit. Great company, glad I'm part of it.

    Goodness the Duchess sounds so tasty in skilled hands. It just has that sound that when you hear it you grin and think oh yes that’s THE sound right there. It’s hard to put into words but when you hear it , it just feels right.

    The tone at 2:46...damn...that's beautiful. Would love a super low wattage Victory.

      They do a V10 Baron Hand wired with valve driven spring reverb switchable power section between 8 & 9 pin valves which can be blended.
      I've a Matamp with a switchable power configuration and for home use its a real bonus, also if your at lower volumes the Spring tank / valve reverb will be more noticeable they sound lush.
      10 watts may not sound like much but if they've put in a high quality transformers & components it handles the headroom & transients giving an open feel way beyond 10. My Matamp will drive 2 * 12" just as easily as a single it doesn't seem to care.

      Love the V50. You can go from 15 to 50 watts in the flick of a switch. No compromises!

      +Brandon Ryan The Victory Sheriff 22 has a built-in power soak which provides a 0.3W output, and its first channel can be quite clean; the Victory V30 can be switched down to 0.5W, and it also can be quite clean. Finally, the Victory RD1/BD1 can be switched down to 2W.

      Thanks for all the great info guys. I hadn't considered anything of this wattage as I really only record guitars and don't need gigging volume. But I hadn't considered the clever tricks that enable lower wattage operation and the level of versatility these things have. They also seem to offer a beautiful raw tone while interacting well with a wide range of pedals. And they all seem to offer defeatable FX loops.

      well...this V40 will go down all the way to about 1W...just put it n the low power mode and select one single power amp tube on the back...its about 1W

    Hey Mick, relatively new to TPS and you mentioned something here that stood out. You said you and Dan prefer running effects into the front of the amp. While this has certainly been implied on the show, I don't recall you guys ever specifically talking about it? If I am mistaken, can you let me know which episode to check out? If i'm right and its only been implied: Do a show about it! Show us why you choose to run effects straight into the amp, when it works, when it might not, what challenges do guitarists face, etc??? Thanks man!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +2

      +New Record Day We've mentioned it a little bit. Rule of thumb for us is that if the amp doesn't have a lot of gain in the preamp (ie it's not distorting or driving heavily), everything works just fine in the front.
      When the amp is gainy however, delays and reverbs can become a bit nasty sounding (same as putting drive after your verb/delay on the board). It's a sound and some people love it, but the more common route is to always have Delays/verbs after your drive..... which is why in an amp with gain in the preamp, it can sound 'cleaner' and 'nicer' with Delays and verbs in the loop. Because the loop comes after the drive of the preamp. Does that make sense?
      Cheers!

      Love what I've heard of the Sheriff...but I've heard mixed reviews on how it takes pedals. I have a JVM410H and love it but it's probably more than I need. Ideally, a 30W or 40W platform would be perfect. If you're like me (or most players), you'll need one of each to be sure. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻. This things sounds fantastic...credit to Mick for sure.

      wizaxed if it helps, I bought a Victory Sherriff 44 recently, to replace a Mesa Mark V 1x12 and it's the best decision I've ever made gear-wise. incredibly happy with the amp tones (selling some drive pedals to make up for it) and I feel it takes pedals well. Mick did the official victory vid for it which shows some effects, and if you have a listen to some of the vids on my channel, they're all using the Sherriff unless it says otherwise and they sound pretty good with very simple recording setup! just my $0.02!

    Mick, Dan... would you guys consider making an episode about cables and how they affect tone? I just saw an episode where you said that cables do have an effect on tone, but didn't elaborate. There's a lot of conflicting information and snake oil around the subject, and I'd love to know more about it. Cheers, and thanks for a superb show!

    Theoretically, the vertical cabinet would also be easier to hear off-axis as well because there's less comb filtering than with a horizontal cab.

      +Lucas Tax That's good to know.

    I really wish more stores in America carried Victory amps. I could always just order one from a USA dealer ( Closest one to me is Riff City) and try it but if I don't like it for whatever reason I'm out shipping, a restocking fee and most likely a big hassle in trying to get them to take it back.
    And I wouldn't blame the dealer one bit for the cost or a hassle. Returns have to cut into their profits margins quite a bit.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +1

      +RackhirTheRed I know Victory would like to open more dealers in the US. It's quite the task from what I can see - so many amps in the market and you're not exactly short of great American amps. Thanks for watching!

      +Erik Dodd Hello Eric. You wouldn't be able to hear any big difference with EL34s unless they were two identical amps side by side. It's really subtle, especially over UA-cam!

      That Pedal Show yeah i have to admit the room i was playing at had some weird resonance thing going on, that pretty much "masked" to real tone of the amp with some uncontrolable amount of bass...or maybe its due to the fact that i played them at living room volume only...and at those relatively low volumes the "regular" V40 just came across a lot more "alive" than the Deluxe...(plus the reverb on the Deluxe was already not functioning, which also lets one down big time)...i didnt want to say that in public but hey, its true...might have been tge store's fault though, since they were two of those "daily mistreated demo amps" that everyone in the store gets to play with...all that being said though, i personally still prefer the "regular" V40...but as you said and i agree: victory probably likes the fact that some people will still enjoy the good old V40! Cheers dude

    These amps seem to be everywhere at the moment (or is it just TPS and Rob/Captain videos).
    To my ears, too much fizz, wanted to reach in and change the bass/mid/treble (sorry Mick).
    But... Very very impressed by tone Graham Coxon was getting in a recent video (Gray Guitars?) where he was plugged into a Sheriff 22. Pretty sure he was using unruly volumes and, well, he's a genius, but check it out if you want something a bit more special tone-wise (again, sorry Mick)

    @MickTaylor - thoughts on V40 vs Wampler Bravado.
    V40 Pros = half the price of Bravado - built in reverb - can get crunch tones from v40 without pedals - lower wattage option of 7 watts and lower (1 power tube single ended mode for 1.5 & .5 watts)
    Bravado Pros = Is it that much better than the V40 as a pedal platform??? Headroom/clarity?
    Bravado Cons = as it's designed you always need pedals unless you want a dry clean tone.
    Would love to see a V40 vs Bravado as they're both small head pedal platform 40watts amps.
    Any chance of getting that video shoot out happening?!? 😉

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +1

      +Stephen Doyle Hello Stephen. To me (Mick here), the Bravado has waaaay more headroom and a cleaner sounding loop, maybe as a result. I'm not sure. It also has way more available presence and treble. V40 has a more traditional overdrive if you want it. Wampler is a 'better' clean pedal platform if that's what you want. Very, very different amps. Cheers!

    • @Robstafarian
      @Robstafarian 7 років тому

      Cathode biasing reduces the power amp's output and changes its harmonic structure. Whereas a pair of cathode-biased EL34 tubes produce an especially beautiful harmonic structure, you would be better off spending less money and making it easy to play quietly by buying a Sheriff 22 instead of a Sheriff 44.

    Hello Mick! Not related to the amp itself, but... have you ever considered the reverse-angle bridge pickup for your strat? I have it on mine and I really like it. I thought it wouldn't make a difference but it does! I know you have the tone-pot wired to it and that probably takes care of taming the highs, but either way, I recommend it! (and you can order a pickguard with the reverse angle on Warmoth) (I am not being paid by Warmoth) (god, I wish I was being paid by Warmoth)

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому

      +Rafael Andrade Had it on the Hendrix Strat and changed it. Under high gain the tone pot is up full and I like the extra treble, especially at gig volume, so it takes away too much having the treble side forward. I'm also really weird about things not being aesthetically right. :9)
      Glad works for you though!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 років тому +2

      Not really Ben. In fact it’s pretty much unnoticeable at lower volumes. The differences become a little more apparent with volume. Personally I think I I prefer the 34s in the V40. The 212 has a ton of low end and I kinda like the tightness of the 34s when you push them. It is marginal though in my opinion. Cheers!

      There’s a BIG difference. 6L6 are far too bass-heavy. I’ve just switched to EL34s and the amp produces a much more defined and useable tone.

    Sounds great !! Can you estimate how much threre is clean headroom available compared to Hot Rod Deluxe III (enough) and Two Rock Studio Pro 35 (not quite enough)? Any differece in clean volume between EL34 and 6L6. Yes, our drummer is bit loud. Thanks!

      +Sampo Kantele Interrsting. My Two Rock SP35 has more clean headroom than our Hot Rod Deluxe. V40 has about the same as the HRD I think, certainly not more, maybe slightly less. 6L6 seem to mean the crunch happens a bit later, and has a different low end. I'd use 6L6es if it was loud cleans I was after.
      The V30 has more really clean headroom than the V40 - stays cleaner longer. Cheers!

      +Sampo Kantele Even with the loop return up high and mid pot pushed in? If so, bloody hell you do play loud! You need a 100 watt amp in that case! Every tried a 100 watt Plexi? GLORIOUS clean sound. Or a HiWatt. Good luck!

    • @sampokantele
      @sampokantele 7 років тому

      Ha + thanks !! I have old Laney Klipp 60 which is kind of Plexish without Klipp circuit on. Best clean tone I have! I take that to gigs but leave it otherwise home, I'm too much of a chicken to leave it in reherseal space. About SP35: mid boost is always off and I have loop return halfway up, any higher than that tone gets broken up the way I don't like. I tested it with Ethos to loop return and it behaves that way too so some tube and/or speaker swapping is seen in near future.

      That's cool, if I knew what I was doing I might have kept it longer. My amp now is the vox night train nt15h, the first version, sounds awesome through the green back I use for it! I like to have my clean tone be a bit dirty and just play dynamically. And then I use an old Marshall jackhammer jh1 and ibanez ts10 when I need more. I've been using the ts10 as a bit of a boost into the jh1 for leads lately and it sounds great! Ever used one? If you can get your hands on it for an episode it's a cool pedal, a little different in tone from a ts9 and 808, but I like it, I think it's a little dirtier.

    Hey Mick,
    Greetings from Germany. I have a question about my V40 head. Given it has 40 watts, i have to turn it up really high to get over a loud drummer. I like the sound with the preamp-volume at 2 o‘clock and i have to set the master to at least 1 o‘clock to be loud enough. Ist that normal? What settings are normal for band volume? My Tiny Terror (set pretty gainy) is easy as loud as the V40 but only has 15 watts. Thank you in advance. Benjamin

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 років тому

      1 o’clock is ticking over really. I have my master dimed. Just prefer the sound of it that way. You’ll find it leaves the TT in the dust at that point. But wouldn’t be as loud as a Matchless Lightning 15. I’ve never understood it but I’ve given up looking at wattage as any kind of indication of volume!

      Early ones were duller. There was a bright cap mod you can do which I did to mine. Crank up the treble and it's plenty bright! I don't use it much any more because I have amps I prefer these days - it was just on the edge of not loud enough for me. So V140 the Super Duchess solves that, as does my Two-Rock. Still a GREAT amp tho.

    • @stephensmith799
      @stephensmith799 2 роки тому

      I wouldn’t describe mine that way (6L6 fitted). It takes pedals beautifully as designed. With my ES355 it likes the slightest suggestion of flanger hoax, vibrato unit and chorus… just enough to be perceptible. I have them on all the time, then Boss blues pedal, Marshal Guv’nor and Germanium Fuzz Face singly or altogether for lead. I don’t like ‘woody’ sounding high gain amps anyway and this isn’t one! For speaker, that’s a Celestion A type, American sounding spkr in a ported Montage cab. This let’s all the sound out not being a fan of closed cabs. Mostly the repertoire is Motown or Stax with a powerful horn section which I’m trying to create separation from. Mostly I’m using about half the 7watt setting and leaving it to the PA to do the heavy lifting. Mind you, it’s versatile with any pedals put in front of it. Gave up on my lovely Laney twin combo cos I got fed up with lifting it in and out of my car and up steps into venues.
      No regrets though agree the EL84 version slightly tighter sounding. The digi reverb is FAR better than Spring reverb which sounds too nasal to me. Hope this helps

    Hello
    I would like to ask the question of whether the V40 takes the pedals much better than the V40 Deluxe. In the immediate future, I would need something to marry my pedals. But I noticed that I am eyeing more and more on the Fender Deluxe Reissue. The V40 Deluxe is more oriented on that side. I wonder if I would not buy the V40 Deluxe. But in the immediate future, the most urgent thing is to get me a pedal platform. For the Fender Deluxe or clone, I can wait.

      Hello Manu, Mick here. The V40 and V40 Deluxe are very similar. In my experience the Deluxe version has a little less headroom, marginally so. They’re both good pedal amps if what you want is a clean-ish platform at reasonable levels. They also have a great overdrive tone - much more mid-60s Marshall than a Fender 65 type Deluxe Reverb anyway... not as aggressive or old school as a Tweed Deluxe. They’re great amps, but pretty different from Fender’s Deluxes. Cheers!

      +Paul Sutton Hi Paul. I just use the vintage braided type wire that you can find at Allparts, StewMac, CrazyParts etc etc. Although if you're just putting a bridge between the middle and bridge pickup lugs on the switch (which is what I do) you only need about 1cm of pretty much anything. That's it! Cheers!

      @Robstafarian 7 років тому +1

      +Paul Sutton 22AWG stranded wire is all you need for electric guitar work; use a lead-free solder alloy, such as SAC305. The other tip I can give you is to buy multiple colors of wire. In preparation for my forthcoming prewired pickguard business (I invented an electric guitar circuit, which I will soon patent), I bought nine colors: my prototype uses eight colors, and my production models will follow suit such that pickup installation, troubleshooting, and repairs afield will be easier for my customers.

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +3

      +Corey Clark V40 price will definitely not drop. Building things in the UK is just soooo much more expensive than in China, Korea or Indonesia etc. In fact I'm amazed they can put them out for these prices at all.
      Is V40D worth the extra? Only you can answer that. The valve driven spring reverb and tremolo add significantly to the cost of the build, as does the wooden box/vinyl covering etc. And they sound absolutely wonderful! You could get a lot of the way there with high quality pedals, but if you want real spring reverb that means an extra few hundred pounds/dollars straight away.

I currently own a made in England Marshall DSL50, how would these compare volume wise? I usually run the Marshall around 3 on the clean channel. What do you think?

      It’s definitely loud enough, especially if you’re only running that Marshall on 3! Can’t remember if I said it wasn’t loud?!? I might have said it doesn’t have massive clean headroom, but that’s a whole other thing. If this amp isn’t loud enough for you, then I wish I had your gigs. Depends what your goal is. There are situations where the V40 has the perrrrrfect balance of volume and character. Let me know how you get on!

      That's good to hear, would potentially put the Marshall a little louder at gigs, but it's usually only about a 3rd of the way up.I get the whole head room thing, I basically want an amp I can put around my shoulder, be loud enough for gigs and take pedals well and this seems to be the perfect thing!
      I'll be sure to let you know how I get on, can't wait for it to arrive tomorrow.

    How does all the hiss go away when you play but when you just stop and while you are explaining the features of the amp I can easily hear the amp goes like hissssshshhshs. How do you cut the hiss?

    • @adamscottv

      Try finding tubes with a really low noise floor. I've also noticed that Mesa's tend to hiss.

    You make every amp sound great. I think I'm still trying to find the amp that does it for me. I might try one of these. I hear sounds from amps that seem like what I want, then when I play them I just can't get the sound/sounds I'm after. I think I need you & Dan to help me set my EQ & pedalboard lol. Any recommendations on a really versatile amp? I like the spectrum between indie & classic rock sounds mostly. Cheers.

      That Pedal Show I have tried that. The high end felt kind of harsh to me. It didn't speak to me. I don't mind spending a little more, cause I want something I can hold onto for a long time. I can't afford any crazy boutique stuff or anything though. I tried a Deluxe Reverb recently that was ok but felt it didn't get very loud. I have a Blackstar that I really like the versatility of, but just can't seem to get the tone I'm after.

      If you like the Fender type cleans but less harsh and less boxy, the V40 is amazing. I run an EQ on my board to give it a bit of extra top end glass in the right freq, so it gives it a bit more highs but not harsh sounding (7ish K with a narrow Q). As Mick was saying the volume is extremely useable too. I play everywhere with it really, home and gigs. Otherwise if you want a versatile EL84 type with a more hifi sound, the H&K stuff is great. Tubemeister and such. Less classic vintage sounding, but really open. Sounds like you pulled your head out of the water and are listening to a nice stereo. Doesn't have near as much vibe though obviously, but the cleans are pristine. Can't say I care much for the gain on them though. I've owned both, and have ended up with the V40 (though a stereo rig with both might be in the future). Hope that helps a bit!

      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +1

      +Dave Diamond We hear you on the harsh thing, although those frequencies are what get you heard in a band - very good for that.
      So yeah, try a V40 if you can, it's certainly more 'friendly' sounding than the HRD. The new V40 Deluxe is a brilliant too. If budget will stretch also try a Morgan PR12. One of the best clean sounds I've ever heard... apart from the Two Rock Classic Reverb Sig, but that's a whole other ball game. Good luck! :0)

    How does it compare volume / output wise to a Fender DeVille / Hot Rod Deluxe III?

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +1

      +Daniel Kell Not quite as much clean headroom as the Deville, kinda similar to the Deluxe. Bass end is stronger under overdrive. Less flappy. Cheers!

If people want to hate on me and Dan for having gear - however it arrives - I suggest they give up their jobs, start a UA-cam channel alongside running some other business and freelancing. We ain't rich, we don't get given loads of stuff, and nor do we ever or will we ever accept any money for product placement. We're just a couple of idiots who are fanatical about guitar gear. And made a UA-cam thing about it. We might make some money at some point and we really hope we do. If anyone's jealous or annoyed at any of that, go do it yourselves! It's there to have.

    well, I had a Duchess and for me this is not a so good amp, and really not very pedal friendly as they say. Anyway for the price and if you look for a decent sound at low wattage that`s not bad but for me not good enough to record with, now I have a Wampler Bravado and this one is a true pedal platform, every pedals work as they have to, this was not the case of the duchess

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  7 років тому +1

      +COX That's a very subjective opinion Cox, but no less valid based on your personal experience. The Bravado definitely has more clean headroom and a more sensitive/tweakable front end. It imparts less character on your pedals, which some people like and some people like less.
      It's also 2.5 times the price in the U.K at least. Glad you've found an amp that works for you. Thanks for watching!
