I used to be a "glassy" hand laying GRP boats. Did a range of 33 foot and 16 footers. No mask, no gloves, thongs on feet was about as far as safety went. Back then it was chopped stand mat x 2, then woven rovings and more chopped, all with hand sanding between the layups as the resin was waxed and had to be sanded before next layer. The air was thick with fibreglass dust. The joys of 80's GRP boat building....
@@NHL4740 From memory... (38+ years ago) on the 33 footers. Bear in mind we used rolls of GRP (Fibreglass) we did not use chopper guns. So - Clean mold, wax mold, spray gelcoat. when gelcoat dry cut suitable lengths off the roll and lay 4oz or 6oz cloth, CSM (chopped strand mat) after it goes off, light sand, then lay 8 oz cloth csm, then sand when dry, then lay woven rovings (forget what weight), light sand when dry and then a layer of either 10 or 12? oz csm cloth. Areas like keel/engine bearers got a slightly different layup. We stood inside the hulls to lay the Fglass so we used waxed resin, as its waxed it has to be sanded off otherwise the next layer resin/glass mix wont adhere as well. I remember eating my lunch with the added goodness of crunchy fibreglass dust! There are still a few boats for sale that I helped build for sale they pop up every now and again. "All Seasons" was one of the brands we built. We did a lot of hulls only, ie ready to fit out as hull/deck/flybridge was all done so the owner fitted it out to how they liked.Single or twin screw hulls, the owner decided. All boats were hand laid/hand rolled/with Fglass cloth cut from rolls.
I a great video. I just told my Emirati fishing friend about the greatness of shark cats (twin-hulls are just beginning to appear here in the UAE), and I found your video. It is perfect to explain to him the pros and cons.
My mates dad had a Noosa Cat based on your model What an outstanding vessel, wet but f#cking expensive with old Johnson's but quick, stable just plain Fun. Did I mention Noosa Cat ? Long, long time ago now but I'll never get over the Stability, versatility and just fun to crush Bars. Did I mention WET. Well done mate, you brought back alot of great memories. Good hunting.
great hull with decent repower will be a great fishing boat except for trolling lures, love these old cats quick rig to get to where you fish. I would love one for Bermagui
Bruce Harris is a god I’m sure king Neptune would have a special place for him downstairs great boats amazing really the sea handling is freaky even in the 18 footers
Great vid about the Cat. Ive got the 8m series in build mode atm. I curious about the driving position being to the side, should I move it to center? Is there a reason most boats steering wheel is too the right side??
@@samhansen527 the style does exist and from plate ali Blackdog Cats in NZ to larger build glass cats in the states. Obviously great in the sense of maintenance costs are instantly half, lower fuel burn and much better rear access to the water. Would be interesting to see the process of one of these Aussie hulls to be converted and maybe it's been done, or attempted and blew up in their face lol
Single engine on this cat would make it ride like a pig although that concept does exist with other manufactures, It's only really to help bring the cost down and more in line with the mono hulls.... the fundamentals of a cat is to be able to trim each engine to suit the condition and once properly learnt you can just about run wide open throttle in anything other than a head sea.
@@gypana I never realised trimming the outboards differently is a thing haha. Always wondered how the Blackdog cats rode like, I figured all the US spec single outboard centre consoles ride much better being +30ft though centre console styled narrow beam for the length.
I got old 20 ft shark cat with twin 200 hp hpdi on it love it grate on fuel economy dose 80 + km .pods on it and centre in back grate to fish from full hard top centre bait and exky staition .done in full honey come glasses floor extra .
@@shaunphillips321 Cats love weight in the stern because they plane in seconds, if anything you struggle to trim them high enough in glassy conditions.

How many layers, what boats and why not wet on wet? Jurious not being a 💩

@@Leosarebetter cool man. Tough, satisfying job. 🍻
Honestly, talking to locals about their boats is sic, pump a vid out once a week
A good canvas kit would serve your boat well, you really need sun shade!

Love Shark Cats. Wet but stability and potential boundless.

Can't beat a good cat!

I have a baby Livingston 12T cat. Love it
I honestly don’t know how you guys don’t have more subs
meranti, indo rain forest lol, great timber, light and strong asf. looks much like black wood in raw form, spotty grains darker and lighter patterns.
Mad roundabout story and revamp of Aussie boat history. Love it. Don't like the tunnel shutter feeling, but each to thier own. Grouse vid!
We need more shark cat content

Has anyone ever seen one of these converted to a single outboard?
Why and how?

Looking to buy one similar in Australia contact me if you know of any
Yahooo!!!
Should use honeycomb material instead of wood again!
the original 🦈😸
I think a pair of lighter Yamaha 200s would solve alot of the problems you guys experienced.
A pair of diesel outboards would be great on this.
Initially expensive, but I'm sure the fuel savings would soon make it worth while.
The weight would ruin the boat

Lol.. don't like the fuel bill cruising at 40 knots?.... 140 ltr/per hour...!
Well I'm in Florida and if you don't want to put a hardtop I would put a soft top because your brain would get fried over here without no top
Sorry, not what I’d call a feel good video.
Most of us pay way too much for our boats then get paid way too little when we sell them years later.
Nothing like putting up with someone else's lazy incompetence.
