@ThemafiaMaestro bringing the music down a a dynamic level is not jeopardizing the music. oh and for the record, most of the time, with famous divas, they don't audition, people come and ask them to do things. that's where they run into vocal trouble. since you're so into "jeopardizing the music" isn't casting the wrong voice type doing just that? yes, she did an okay job, but a real dramatic soprano like the composer wanted, would have done a MIRACULOUS job
@ThemafiaMaestro fair enough, except for the first sentence. it is the job of the conductor to adjust to the limits of the singer's voice and the job of the singer to communicate her limits and abilities to the conductor for them both to work around or embelish. Renee Fleming is a lyric soprano, she doesn’t have the ability to sail over a 100 piece dramatic orchestra the way Birgit Nilsson or Joan Sutherland could.
Hats off to renee for keeping her composure after only just making her high pp Bflat. Ironically Urmana, who here was a mezzo does a perfect high pianissimo in her more recent performance as a soprano. Urmana also has the real Verdi timbre, unlike Renee
The equipment is just not there. It’s like asking a chihuahua to pull a sleigh when you need a siberian husky. I'm not saying the conductor should wait on the singer hand and foot, but they completely play over her at the most dramatic part.
@ThemafiaMaestro "any singer should be able to sing over an orchestra" false. a light/medium orchestra yes, but not a large, dramatic orchestra like this one. it is much easier for the orchestra to bring down the volume than for the singer to sing louder. on a side note, stating the obvious fact that she is a lyric soprano doesn't mean that I know a lot about voice (I'm only a freshman in college after all) and I have no idea where you got off saying any of that about me.
@ThemafiaMaestro hahaha whatever. I never attacked anyone, I asked a question. how is a voice supposed to represent heaven and earth when the orchestra is owning it?
@ThemafiaMaestro "can you contemplate with your mortal mind?" what now, is your ming immortal haha anyway, speaking of epic, mortal, dramatic, whatever... doesn't epic, heroic music need an epic heroic voice? renee fleming has a nice voice, but it's a nice "normal" voice. this piece requires a super human, angellic voice that makes one think of angels and grand supernatural powers.
I am a lyric-coloratura soprano and absolutely, categorically, beyond the shadow of a doubt will NOT sing the soprano solo of the Verdi Requiem. Chorus-yes, Solo-NO WAY.
I can't stop watching this. Truly a voice sent from god
Melhor libera me de todos! Grandiosíssimo libera me de todos os tempos! Histórico! Grande Fleming!
Please see the version where Violeta Urmana plays the soprano role. Absolutely marvelous ! Semyon Bichkov conducting.
So good
I don't relly understand why the horrid comments......I love her doing the requiem.
A young Pappano

I love it!! You rock Miss Renée!

I agree, this is written for dramatic soprano. she should stick to lyric and coloratura roles
wtf is the conductor thinking? you don't blast the orchestra like that when the singer is a lyric soprano!
