    In this video I've got five tips that will help you link your beginner snowboard turns. These five beginner snowboard tips will help you learn to turn faster and in a safer way. The first tip is to start your snowboard turn by sliding on an angle. By sliding your snowboard on an angle, you won't have to turn as far. Your turns will come around smoother and with less effort. The second tip for linking snowboard turns is to control your speed equally on your heels and toes. Counting in your head will help to even out your turns. The third tip to let your snowboard run straight for one second. This will stop you from trying to turn your snowboard too quickly and getting twisted. The fourth tip is to turn your snowboard with your entire body. Start the turn with your head, shoulders and hips and this will bring your snowboard around smoothly. Finally find an easy slope to practice linking your snowboard turns. Learn at your own pace and this will keep you safe as you learn.

    I just went snowboarding for the first time today and I started on a pretty steep run and it worked out much better for me than the flatter runs I did later in the day. It was a lot easier to toe and heel slide. The only problem was linking the turns and committing for a second but I started to get the hang of it after a couple hours. Just something to think about if you’re starting out like me

    Hey Kevin. thank you for the videos that you post. Getting some great snow in Cali and I've tried to snowboard 4 years ago but didn't pick it back up until this season. Taking all the lessons and tops you've provided and applying them. Last 2 sessions have been productive and I'm progressing. Going up again tomorrow and Sunday. Once again thanks.

    Thank you so much for these beginner videos. I’d never stepped on a snowboard before two weeks ago, and didn’t take any lessons, only watched your videos. Just went for my second day and was able to make it down the green runs pretty well. I found being on my toes very comfortable and love sliding around turns on the toe edge. I need to work on your intermediate turn video so I don’t lose too much speed. It was a challenge to keep speed on the flatter areas. It felt great picking it up so quickly.

    Another tip I learned last year for linking turns is using ur toes and front of ur feet to turn. What I mean is when u r going to the right and r trying to turn left, u pull ur front toes up and counteract that force with ur back toes by holding that foot down so it tortionally flexes the board which helped me the most when learning. When going from left to right, u put ur front toes down and pull ur back toes up to turn. It also works the same for switch. Also, nice vid!

    went on my 2nd trip snowboarding because I fell in love. The point about letting the board run straight was my eureka moment and when I was able to start linking turns (obviously improvement needed). Don't fight the board, ride it out for that one second or however long and then initiate that turn. I went form taking a fall every toe edge turn to pulling it off (a bit too fast still) but this is when it gets fun, not stopping and getting down the trail.

    hey Sir.
    i love the channel, it's help me out alot being a 45 year old advance beginner.
    I've got a question though.
    I've gotten a really good base down for linking turns on mild runs. I really like traversing back and forth on mellow long runs.
    however, on steeper drop runs i can't seem to make the switch from heel side to toe side and i stay mostly heel side , causing me to side slip alot.
    I'm Regular footed by the way.
    any suggestions.
    thanks alot in advance.

      Hey if your are regular footed try this. Go very slow on your heel edge. Pull up on your toes on your right foot. Push down on your toes with your left foot. This "twist" of the snowboard will cause you to turn in a clockwise direction which can lead you towards your toe turn. When you are facing down hill push extra weight on the toes on your front foot and bring your hips forward. (dont stick your butt out). Good luck

    Thank you! I just finished my very first lesson and evening boarding. It was very hard, but a blast as well. Loved most of what I was able to do at 39 y/o first time boarder. I was able to come down the slope multiple times without falling at all. I was able to stop heelside at the base. I really want to be able to be more in control of speed while on the slope. Not just downhill flying, although it is fun. Any tips for specific practicing or movement to help with that? or just try while coming down the hill each time.

Do you have any tips for what I should be doing next for picking up more speed and more fluent riding, instead of starting and stopping with my turns? I'm guessing once it's more fluent I'd be able to control myself better on narrow runs. Thanks! Really enjoying the videos, learning a lot!

      play with foot angle up to +/-15 degrees on either foot, that helped me. Originally I started off with 15 leading and 0 trailing, changed to -10 on the trailing and made turning twice as easy. Couple that with upper body movement and practice, jobs a guddun.

    Can you a video on etiquette of the mountain like passing people and if you need to look at for people behind you

    •  7 років тому +8

      That guy at 1:43 had no etiquette at all. Kevin was going super slow towards the side of the slope with his arms wide open (signaling that he's a [fake] beginner) and the guy just blazed past him. He then cuts off the skier in the yellow jacket.
      A real beginner would have freaked out and lost his balance.
      The same thing happened to me last year (my first season), but the guy hit me from behind and sent me flying. I stood there on the ground not being able to breathe for about 5min.
      That experience really blocked me from progressing my riding, as I would be constantly looking over my shoulders and stopping whenever I saw someone behind me (yep, that means all the time).

      Like driving, just stay close to the right if you are slow.

    •  7 років тому

      I guess that makes sense, but it's really hard if you're a true beginner and:
      A - Your board has a life of its own and you can't control which way you go
      B - The fall line pulls you towards the left
      C - The outside of the run is on your right and you want to stay the hell away from those scary orange/yellow ropes (especially if you can't control your board)

    • @dean3583
      @dean3583 7 років тому +1

      In Canada, the faster skiers from behind would yell: I'm on your right/left which tells you he will pass you from yout right or left. you can go straight/slow or opposite his command. It's a first rule in beginners' skiing lessons

    when transferring fluidly from a toe-side turn to heel-side turn, should your front foot lead, with hip and shoulder behind? or should both feet drive at the same time?
    many snowboarders swing their back foot out like a rudder and it is hideous and causes loss of speed and counter-rotation.

    Hi I’m between beginner to intermediate turn level. While I’m trying to steer more aggressively, every time I turn on my heel edge, my board just seems to go straight to being perpendicular to the slope such that I am facing the slope. Am I placing too much pressure on my heel? But if I don’t do this I feel I am going down too fast. Please help!

    Can you do a video on advanced butter tricks?

  • @CollinMckenna
    @CollinMckenna 7 років тому

    How do you go straight though? Do you just stay on an edge and make your board go as close to the ground, while staying on that edge?

    Perfect timing video Kevin. Ima send this to my son. He will only ride on his heel, I think he is kinda scared to move to the toe edge. I try showing him but he seems to over-commit when he moves to toe or try to get up on toe. He will over-lean to the toes and will just fall over.

      +AOmonsta Try and get him to do a few runs of just toe sliding. This will help him find his balance over his toes. Thanks for watching!

    Ive heard that Twisting your snowboard (with torsion not pivot) helps turn. Do you agree?

    • @Matthew-re9pb
      @Matthew-re9pb 6 років тому

      Yes it does help... I started out flailing my arms to get my board to turn at first lol - but i didnt know any board mechanics.
      I flex my front foot up and press down on my back foot to get the board sliding easier.

      This really helps for me when going slow and on flat runs...when im acheiving high speeds, the momentum from riding does most the work.

    It would be awesome to get a video about choosing boots, and how to go about breaking them in. I finally bought a pair of Burton Imperial blue snowboard boots. I didn't think about breaking them in, and the first day on the mountain run #2 my feet were numb. Can you give me some advice on how I should go about breaking them in?

    • @SnowboardProCamp
      @SnowboardProCamp  7 років тому

      +Morgan Linton some ski/snowboard shops can heat mold your boots to your feet. Also just wearing them around the house for an hour or two a day.

    Hi Kevin! I'm an intermediate rider. i don't know how to ride in a steep run (blue, black) when linking the turn do u crouch down more or u stand up and change slide.

    • @reillyhughes371
      @reillyhughes371 7 років тому +1

      Steven Wang What I do is crouch, which adds stability on the peak of the turns , then when I start to come around and need to switch to either toe or heel turn, I stand up a little bit to release the pressure from the board and snow and lean into the direction I want to go and allow to momentum from the previous turn to carry me over to the other side. Hope this helps!

      Reilly Hughes thank u! thats how i ride too, btw when riding, do u feel u don't have much control in font foot compare to ur back foot ? I tend to put more pressure on the back foot.

    • @reillyhughes371
      @reillyhughes371 7 років тому

      Steven Wang I've been snowboarding for 8 years now, so I've gotten the hang of foot control and such, but I have found that when I'm going really fast down a hill, I tend to lean more forward to allow my turns and cuts to be more aggressive. Going slow I'm usually more in the middle to back to allow for quick initiation of butters or flat tricks.

      Steven Wang always put more of your weight into your front foot. Will make your turns feel more confident and fluent.

      For learning to turn on a steep run it is best to start the turn standing up (extended), as said. Start the turn by using torsion to twist the board. Make sure as you start to turn you are leaning forward. your hips and shoulders should match the slope of the hill (parallel). Lastly use a pivot motion to rotate the board quickly under your body so your turn is quick. You will gain to much speed if your board faces downhill to long. GLuck

    I cannot do anything with the toe part. I just automatically fall. Or my board will clip the snow and I fall. Can't figure it out yet...

    • @alexial
      @alexial 6 років тому

      I found that when I'm going from heel to toe side, I make myself look up the hill, this controls my speed and I keep keep skating along toe-side before switching back to heel. Hope this helps :)

    • @Matthew-re9pb
      @Matthew-re9pb 6 років тому

      Practice on a skateboard going toe to heel, bend your knees, lower center of mass, dig the toes in and grip the snow/street - then coast along to a full stop. Or start going down the hill, begin the toe edge turn and literally try to make a U pointed towards the mountain.
      Start slow and easy, mastering the toe is the hardest part.

      I had this problem the whole last season. but I tried to go down the hill just on toes. slowly. I was going and stopping! I'm still not as comfortable as heels but can handle it hopefully.
