I clearly remember when me and my mom bought Majora's Mask. Being hardcore fans of Ocarina of Time, we saved up for a long time to afford MM (we were pretty poor back in 2000/2001), so when we finally bought it, we were EXCITED. But when we got home and tried to play the game, we were greeted with a screen saying something like "you need an expansion pak to play this game." And of course I became super sad. But my mom was like "screw it, let's go back to the store and buy the expansion pak too", even though we had almost no money. I was only 8 years old when all that happened, but it's one of my clearest memories from my childhood.
***** Dreamcast came the next generation afterwards and did exactly what Nintendo wanted to do with the N64. So Dreamcast was way ahead of it's time, and the N64 could have been way WAAAAAAY ahead of it's time.
I knew about the failed disc drive expansion, but I didn't know how far they were planning on going with it. Fully-featured online? 3D Photoshop? That stuff's pretty cool.
***** thats the main problem - they're always cutting edge with concepts and implementation, but then other designers from rival companies take the ideas and refine them, making the nintendo stuff look outdated. we take dual control sticks for granted now, but it was nintendo that brought controller based sticks in with the N64, and out two of them on the GC.
morlock19 Actually the OG Playstation was the first to have the dual stick design. and also the the Dual Shock 1 was the first to have a built in rumble feature.
Hell yeah. No PS game ever did that to me. Tomb Raider or Resident Evil were very impressive, but not overwhelming. While Mario (and Zelda for that matter) were exactly that: over-freakin-whelming.
+Elli I've never been a final fantasy fan, so... Like, the PS1 was fine, i bought it when it came out and i had plenty of games. But somehow none of them was really memorable. Enjoyable, but not memorable. "Soulless" would be the right word i guess?
Insistance that the N64 be cartridge-based wasn't a cost consideration--it was because the Super NES outlived its major competitors by double and they wanted that same breathing room for the console's longevity. See, cartridges are VASTLY superior to discs when it comes to creative development. Most people think that the "no loading time" is the biggest plus, but it's not; it's the fact that cartridges are system daughterboards and not just read-only memory like compact discs and DVDs. The hardware inside each game is unique to its own development and presentation. You can do everything from add more RAM, add special algorithm processors and sound creation channels and even go so far as to almost double the processing power of the console all by having various modules on the board in the cartridge. In essence, cartridge games ADAPT the system to suit their own needs. Consider the Super-FX chip that rendered 3D graphics on the SNES. It was INSIDE the cartridges that needed it. By contrast, discs are foreign media--the only thing they can do is load the contents of their read-only sectors into the system's RAM to be processed by its static internal components (this is the "loading"--when you exceed the portion of the disc you're currently playing on and go to a new area, the console has no input or code for it, so it retains what little code it needs to keep (like your stats, position and character render info) and dumps the rest--overwriting it completely from the next sector on the disc. Slow, inferior over time and prone to optical errors. The only reason discs were in use during those generations at all was that they were easier to code on (universal hardware access settings) and that Sony is a media company that profits from the sale of disc media (they partially owned the CD format and--what a surprise! the PSX played CDs!).
Cartidges are still an excellent solution. Games as old as even my Atari 2600 carts (and certainly my N64 carts) all still work perfectly, and I have yet to have a single game's save battery fail (even my Dragon Warrior NES cart still saves correctly). Loading on a cartridge is instantaneous and lets the system do things on a hardware level even a hard disk drive would have trouble doing.
Hungry Blocko 3DS carts can hold over 2GB. Pokémon X and Y were 1.7 GB as digital downloads. And those aren't much larger than your thumbnail. Also, the cost of cartridges are still a fraction of the cost of the software itself. Obviously digital downloads are the cheapest, but compared to any other physical medium, there's not much difference between selling a box with a disc or a box with a cart. The cost of manufacturing and shipping a box+instructions+inserts+disc vs.box+instructions+inserts+cart could be the different between $2 and $3. in overall cost to the publisher vs. the sale price of $50 for the software.
I feel like digital downloads are not the way to go anyway. As games get more and more robust or detailed, they get larger. Network technology is still roughly the same as it was in 2002. RAGE for PC has 19 GB of 4k textures (that still kinda like like shit and could easily have been larger). Fully patched Skyrim with all the DLC is sitting at well over 10 GB on my hard disk right now. There is a point for handheld media where digital downloads are not an option. Take Pokemon X and Y. It's a 1.7GB download. With the latest patch, it uses almost 90% of my included 2GB SD card. YEESH. Nintendo could invest in flash drives of up to 64 or 128 GB, sure, but those can cost $60-100, and at the end of the day will only really hold a few large games depending on size. For handhelds, swappable physical media is just the way to go. Sony Vita games have an excellent solution - giving the player a high speed game card with dedicated storage. This is the best solution. Fast, swappable flash memory cartridges. This will never change. I'm surprised consoles don't use this tech. It removes the need to install games, loads faster than discs, and eliminates the need for separate save media. The upcoming PlayStation TV with Vita game compatibility will basically be the first true cart/card-based game console since the Nintendo 64. I'm excited.
Joseph DiSalvo It makes me wonder... Who was the total MASTERMIND that managed to make a tiny SD card sized cart fit SO much more memory than a cart that's the size of your hand? It's amazing, how far we've come.
Keep doing more facts on Game Consoles. I love hearing about a console's history. :) And may I suggest a SEGA Saturn Did You Know Gaming? I feel like the console needs more love, and it'd be interesting to learn more about it.
***** And then when its cool, be the only asshole developer that wants money out of every video people make with their games, instead of encouraging like most developers do.
+Carl Bloke I never said they dont allow it, I said they are the only developer that wants money out of every video with nintendo footage and that includes lets plays, thats just incredibly stupid and stingy, they just dont understand its free publicity, most developers encourage lets plays and youtube content.
Nintendo does something ahead of its time, it didn't sell. (N64DD) Nintendo does something that's with the current time, it didn't sell (Gamecube) Nintendo does something that is behind for it's time, it doesn't sell (Wii U) Either they're doing something wrong with the marketing, or people just like to hate Nintendo for no reason
In my opinion, Nintendo's marketing focuses more on keeping the fanbase they already have rather than expanding it (which, if their console/game sales are any indication, isn't a very good move).
People don't like Nintendo because it doesn't consist of generic shooters as 95% of it's software library and fun colorful games are apparently gay and childish. Not my opinion, but it is what I hear most people say about Nintendo. Jake Darby The difference was that it was marketed more towards traditionally non-gamers. That console was loved mostly by soccer moms and old people. The amount of 'news' I saw on TV that retirement homes had bought a Wii was unbelievable. Those aren't the same types of people who buy a new console thus, they didn't buy the WiiU. Actual gamers didn't buy a WiiU since most of them didn't like the Wii. To this day the only marketing that I ever remember for the Wii was Wii-Fit based games that gamers usually won't touch. They sort of shot themselves in the foot with the Wii buy selling it primarily to people who don't give much of a fuck about games and will likely never buy a new console to replace the Wii. whilst simultaneously alienating their old fans by throwing gimmicks at us that nobody really liked and not giving us enough games we wanted.
Well......not exactly. Peripherals, no matter the platform, never do well (Sega CD, 32X). Consumers generally do not like being stuck buying an expensive add-on just to play certain games. Plus developers don't like making games for something that has an unknown install base so they often never get good support. The Game Cube suffered because of the damage that the N64 did to Nintendo's reputation with consumers and developers. The Wii U was just straight up idiotic with again having under-powered hardware only this time with a bad gimmick. A touch screen controller would have been cool about 15 years ago. Alot of people don't realize that Nintendo had been struggling ever since the N64. The N64 is now appreciated as a great console with great games, but back in the day it was not. The Playstation demolished the N64 in it's prime. It took the Wii to dig Nintendo out of trouble and Nintendo did nothing but sit back and collect the money the Wii brought in and learned nothing from their past. That is the tragic story of Nintendo.
I'm pretty sure that the Nintendo Gamecube, beat the Xbox in sales and closely followed the PS2's sales. The Wii (not U) sold extremely well and for the time being, it did beat the 360 and PS3 in sales when it first came out. The only console they have messed up on is the Wii U, which, isn't a bad console at all. I bought a Wii U instead of an Xbox One and I love it. I personally think it's better than my Xbox 360, PS3, and the newer consoles. If people like you gave it a try, you would love it and it would be well worth your money. People just don't understand Nintendo does not give two shits what Microsoft and Sony does, and Nintendo keeps at it on their own Pace.
Jxudo Playstation 1 > N64 in sales. There's a bigger probability of more success on PS1. N64 sold 32.1 million world wide. PS1 had 102 million sales. Now FF7 was a big hit so obviously that is a factor (although not the best seller, Grand Turismo was). BUT, PS1 established a more teenage-ish audience, while N64 felt more for younger people (not saying N64 was a kiddie system, just public perception).
You also have to remember Square Enix wasn't too happy about Nintendo favoring cartridges over CDs (although the Nintendo claims it was done for speed as said in the video, it was far more likely they were afraid of piracy, which makes sense), since they can't store anywhere close to as much compared to CDs (8-64 MB versus 600 MB). I'm pretty sure they jumped to Sony before they even knew what the success of it would be.
Wow, I knew the 64 had a lot of silly addons and peripherals, but I never knew it went THIS far. I could have taken this whole video as satire if I didn't know it was true.
Are you kidding me? Those peripherals were fucking awesome! It may not be impressive now, but for 1999 that was actually pretty groundbreaking! Get over yourself.
Stony Tony I was being silly with my original post but then you had to go and tell me to 'get over myself' and now you got my feelings all hurt. Why must you do these things? Of course they were groundbreaking back in the day, but now we're here in the modern era and it seems so strange looking back on it. Especially consider how few people latched onto these peripherals. They really never caught on enough to be even noteworthy. I'm sure the E-Reader for example (and yes, I had one back in the day) could have been awesome and enabled a lot of really cool ideas, and it had the potential to be the first Skylanders more than a decade before that sort of "material collectibles = game characters/data" concept caught on, but in the end it was another gimmicky, underused peripheral that not enough people bought into for it to be effective. A lot of these were effectively plugging holes that were left in the initial design of the system, and they often did it in a way that necessitated a major sacrifice in some area, like eating up the port for game cartridges just to enable internet connectivity.
Wait... they had twitch-like streaming back in 1999? Fee or no fee, for 1999 and console at that... is pretty amazing. (Not even PC had anything close to that)
Well the 64DD was trying something to be more ahead of it's time...sort of like Pokemon Crystal in Japan, which basically had a GTS in place with a way to connect the Gameboy to a cell phone?
I miss the N64 days, those days were the shit! The most memorable game was Superman 64, I mean it was SO fun and had so much variety. Who wouldn't wanna fly through rings?
nintendo has ALWAYS been ahead of the curve. they just don't dial it back a bit so the rest of the world can catch up. remember when everyone said the DS was crazy? one year later and everyone had one.
morlock19 I never heard people saying the DS was crazy. Also, I wouldn't say they've ALWAYS been ahead of the curve, just usually been ahead of the curve. Nonetheless, I still love Nintendo, even if their home consoles haven't been releasing as many games that have earned special places in my heart as of late. I think the last home system of theirs to release games that I truly love to death was the GCN.
Sin Kamar i remember when the DS first came out, it didn't have a ton of games and there were some studios that were saying "yeah that seems neat, but we just don't really know what its for." fast forward a year or two and its the darling of the handheld market.
The Nintendo 64 is my favorite fucking console! Pokemon Stadium is like THE GAME for me on the N64. I know it seems childish but, the CG power with PStadium is fucking amazing!
***** Wut? Chill, dude, I was talking to the guy who started this thread. You should really learn how this comment system works so you don't make a fool of yourself anymore.
nope, im pretty sure it's just a method of counting votes. they can see how many viewers were brought here by the skyrim annotation and compare it with the clicks on the other annotation.
I think they were justified in using carts for the console. Can you imagine how horrendous load times would be for a game like Ocarina of Time if it was running on PlayStation?
+MugenHeadNinja the game would actually look worse on a PS1. Because the PS1 have less RAM and even if the N64 and PS1 CPU have the same architecture , the PS1 cpu is much slower. But i agree that the games would have been bigger on a CD rom.
RAGE Sorry I don't know why, but I imagined it as if it were the N64, just with a disc, not on playstation like the original comment says, but you are correct.
Discs break easier than cartridges, so they missed out on a lot of replacement $$$. I'd like to see a proprietary rewritable cartridge, like a USB FlashDrive, that could be taken to kiosks in a store, like RedBox, to pay for games to be added onto. FUCK cloud'data storage. I don't like the concept of my data not being kept in my own home for a few things, although I do realize most things use some form of mass data storage like cloud.
My mom bought me and my brother an Nintendo 64 when we were kids because we would scratch up DVD discs. I think the fact they chose to use cartidges is awesome since Nintendo's focus are kids.
+Amanda Henslee DVD? the first dvd was made in 1995 but they did not become a thing till the early 2000's, Unless your talking about CD's or you got the N64 near the end of its lifetime or after the end of its lifetime.
Modern 8-bit bruh, I was born in 1994, when 2000 came around I was six and though we did still use VHS we also had DVDs. Don't assume stuff about people you don't even know.
Oh the N64...Such a good system...So MANY great games: Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, StarFox 64, Kirby 64, Mario Party 2, Banjo Kazooie, Super Smash Bros. Majora's Mask, Diddy Kong Racing, Paper Mario, Pokémon Stadium. The N64 will always be my favorite video game console of all time.
It's really sad how cartridges ended up ruining so many of the N64's chances :( even better games, more third party support...it would've wrecked the PS1 pretty much everywhere.
Thomas Jenkins Certainly, but I don't think it would've been THAT different. Nintendo ended up embracing mature titles more openly near the end of the N64 and completely during the Gamecube's life (mainly because of the Mortal Kombat controversy), so I think things would be pretty much the same they are now, just replace Sony with Nintendo and keep Microsoft/Xbox the same.
***** The N64 had overall better games that still hold up very well to this day. The PS1 has (way) more games, but that's about it. And yeah, the controller wasn't great. Just remember that, if it wasn't for the N64's analog stick, the modern PS controller wouldn't exist, it would continue being a carbon copy of the SNES controller.
Unshaved Stuff I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of Metal Gear Solid playing in my living room. FYI, Atari already had an analog stick (and a wireless one!).
That's one of those ideas Nintendo should take off their headphones, or whatever they're wearing like to not listening to us. Imagine Ura Zelda for the Wii-U.
Fun Fact: The N64 game Ridge Racer 64 has a car entitled "Ultra 64." It had full stats and was awarded to the player by completing all stages with the Z-Class speed.
because nobody bought the stuff unfortunately, nintendo has been doing online gaming since the NES, but they all mostly failed, nintendo coul only come to one conclusion once the gamecube came out(and even then the gamecube had online)
Everyone is talking about why cartridges are better than disks, but I have my own answer: I think cartridges look cool and all. Then come in a variety of shapes, it makes the console look fuller, and you can just plop in a cartridge, and it loads up, and you can see what game you're playing! That removing and plopping a cartridge thing must be satisfying to some. Nowadays, we STILL use cartridges, but it's partially hidden (3DS) or even hidden completely (Switch). Discs are fine in my opinion, but I like cartridges more. *C A R T R I D G E S*
Still the best console of that generation. Though they forgot to mention that part of the reason Nintendo didn't start with a disk based system is because their deal fell out with sony due to Sony's terrible contract. The contract stated that Sony would get all the profits from the console's game sales even if Nintendo made the game so obviously Nintendo didn't want to sign it as it would spell absolute collapse for them.
You're missing the point entirely. Final fantasy 7 has only held up decently because it changed nothing from previous games, except for video cutscenes. Hell, final fantasy 5 had a more flexible combat system, and final fantasy 6 had a more coherent plot that paced better. Super mario 64 is a game that changed 3d gaming that no other 3d game did at that time. It refined analog control where the distance you push the stick corresponded with marios walking or running speed. Mario's swimming mechanics were better than anything released at that time. His athleticism is also incredible and controlling mario just feels right. Compare that to 3d games with tank controls and or when the camera is consistently on your backside. The camera was independent of mario and that was revolutionary for 3d gaming at the time. No other 3d game during that time had captured marios tight movement. While the camera hasn't aged well for many modern tastes, I'm pretty skilled at using it and it's better than most during the time, the game reinvented exploring in a 3d space like no other. Metal gear solid is probably the playstation's equivalent on how it changed gaming. F zero x also ran at 60 fps which was rare for early 3d console gaming and with the expansion pack, games looked sharper and less blurrier than most 3d playstation games. N64 had better 3d technology when talking about 3d space and draw distance, playstation had the best of both worlds with 3d and 2d. And the saturn had better 2d visuals, I don't pick favorites because of nostalgia, and I love many games from all 3 systems, each were better for specific genres.
TheMultiYoshi I knew how to convert Yen to Dollars from a Japanese School Simulator. No, not the "You're a student at this School" kind, the "Manage a School as a Principal" kind.
Online gaming was a thing before the N64. If I remember correctly the Sega Genesis was the first console to utilize online gaming. The Super Famicom had a similar service but I'm pretty sure it utilized radio to stream games rather than connecting it to the internet.
Why does it always seem that consoles and console add-ons that are advanced or ahead of their time always does so bad? The Sega Dreamcast and The Nintendo 64 Disc Drive are the main examples of this. The Sega Dreamcast had amazing graphics and capabilities along with some of the most greatest games of all time. The Nintendo 64 Disc Drive gave the console the opportunity of to use online features and even included some fun games, too. I guess during that time, people were afraid to try things new. What a shame. I don't have a N64DD but I do have a Dreamcast and an N64 and they are my favorite game systems in my collection.
64dd failed because of console add-ons having a bad reputation and it was very expensive. Dreamcast failed because Sega was releasing too many consoles in too short a time frame, and people began to not trust them for it.
BRB, going to find a TARDIS so I can go back in time and buy all these, and also a Dreamcast and all its accessories. Ooooh, I can't wait to see what they'll have if they ever do a Gamecube video. I still have my GBA connector and disc, but it never hurts to know what other interesting titbits are there.
***** That, and I ultimately enjoyed N64 more than PS1 back around age 7-10. Yes, I had both consoles, with many of the popular (and unpopular) games for each. Opinions.
wolfman596 N64 games. Super Mario 64 , Mario Kart 64 , Banjo Kazzoie/Tooie , DK64 , Goldeneye, The Legend of Zelda ..and also Super Smash bros. and Mario Party, Those games meant revolution. Also the N64 was the first console ever who had a 3D-Joystick. If u enjoy gta , crash bandicout and gran turismo more than those games i listed then its not because those games were bad, it only showes what kind of gaming genre u enjoy more. Looking at the sales ps1 easiely won. But looking at the technologicly developement of the Nintendo 64 than the N64 won, despite of the fact that PS1 succeded in making games on the CD. More multiplayer games came out for the N64 than for the PS1. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- personaly i enjoyed the n64 more since there were more multi-co.op games than there were for the PS1. spending enjoyable time with friends was so easier with the n64 than with the PS1. if i hadnt had that much friends at that time earlier, i would surely share the same opinion than u. Opinions are preferences.
angenogu While I didn't do as much of the multiplayer as you have, I have to agree that the N64 is and was a lot more memorable and enjoyable than the PS1. Of maybe 4 or 5 PS1 games I played, I had to go through a loading screen between levels, a foreign concept for many of the N64 games. And let's not forget, a few N64 titles shaped entire genres.
Did you know the Game cube was originally called the Dolphin but was changed due to international controversy surrounding the inhumane hunting procedures of stray dolphins?
I have a N64, I had no idea that there were so many add-ons for it. I think mine is just the stock N64 Pikachu version... (I wish I had enough memory to save my star fox 64 game...)
I don't know. it just doesn't save and when I asked someone who's game DID save they said that I might need more memory for the N64. I think that Star fox is to full of other stuff for save slots. That's my guess anyway...
MiningwithPudding Check the game. Does it have existing date? I'm certain that like the GameBoy cartridges, N64 cartridges use(d) a save chip or something, I forget what it's called. Anyway, it's possible that the battery that powered it died. I've had this happen to me with two GBC games. Game&Watch 2... and one of the worst... Pokemon Crystal Version. So many hours of hypothetical sweat and tears just... just wiped clean. It's too horrible! So yeah, if it uses a battery to power a save function, you'll have to open up the cartridge, and replace said battery. If you want to go that far, go to ehow or something. Or just find another copy. OR get the 3DS remake.
N64 Expansion Pack, the video mentioned the 3 games that 'required' it, with Perfect Dark having an (*). StarCraft 64 also 'required' the N64 Expansion Pack (*). It was required to access the second part/half of the campaign, the 3 brood war campaigns. And it was also required to play multiplayer, which was split screen. No Expansion Pack = half a game, with no multiplayer, no in game encyclopaedia.
Make a Shin Megami Tensei/Persona Did You Know Gaming next, come on! There are a lot of cool stuff and references there, if you bother to look after them.
I hope they start with the later games (P3 and Nocturne forward) just because they have a lot more to cover. I don't hate the prev games but Nocturne and P3 is when things got real good.
At least half of that N64 DD stuff I didn't know about. Also, I remember either the Cruis'n arcade cabinet or some arcade game had a port where you could plug in your N64 Controller Pak on the side of the cabinet. (I guess to save your high score)
FalkonLink Yeah I'm pretty sure I remember being able to play just fine without the expansion pak. Well, "just fine" meaning with a significantly LOWER framerate among other things, so you can imagine how that went.
64DD - now that's a big woman
this should have so many more likes than it already does
The Terrible Bullet Dodger I guess most people here don't understand what bra sizes mean.

***** I still love my dreamcast.
I still enjoy playing my N64 to this day. My heart is going to be broken if it ever breaks/dies.
Nintendo hardware tends to be the most durable though. You could probably throw it out a 16 floor building and it'll still work.
***** The mugger saw he had a gamecube with him and booked it away. Everyone knows not to mess with gamecubes.
***** Are you serious? Then I must be extremely hard on my Gamecubes, I've played two of them until the point that they both broke.
It's Nintendo hardware. It will never break.
Fuzunga Not on my own hands, I take care my stuff. But who knows, someone else might break it. I'm just saying, _if_ it ever happened.
64DD is one of those consoles that I've always been curious about. Great video!
The 64DD isn't a console it's an add-on

Too good. Too good.
Burdulader why thank you. XD
I love the name Ultra 64. It sounds so fucking badass.
Holy shit, those features were insane. That was like 10 years ahead of its time.
Still, in my opinion, the BEST system they have made yet, with the most memorable games.
"Quality of pixels over speed." Sounds a lot like the modern game market.
Hahaha thank you for reading my mind. :) ... but it's kind of creepy... how did you do that? :O
I'm a 20th level gypsy. I know all. I see all.
Consoles can't really do either all that well
Now this was an interesting one. Who would've thought that Nintendo attempted something like Miiverse all the way back then?
Woah...This console had features wayyy ahead of it's time.

I knew about the failed disc drive expansion, but I didn't know how far they were planning on going with it. Fully-featured online? 3D Photoshop? That stuff's pretty cool.
Nintendo is constantly bashed for bringing the inferior console into the console wars, but they are almost always VERY ahead of their time.

Damn, i remember when Mario 64 came out. It was just so spectacular, especially how much content it had.

Maciej P My feelings exactly. Nothing ever blew my mind like those games did.

Except it would cost a lot more, and they would have to be much larger today.
Hungry Blocko 128gb micro sd
Joseph DiSalvo It makes me wonder...
Who was the total MASTERMIND that managed to make a tiny SD card sized cart fit SO much more memory than a cart that's the size of your hand? It's amazing, how far we've come.
Then that means that the 64DD was WAAAAAAAAY ahead of its time
Keep doing more facts on Game Consoles. I love hearing about a console's history. :)
And may I suggest a SEGA Saturn Did You Know Gaming? I feel like the console needs more love, and it'd be interesting to learn more about it.
"...You can watch other people's play sessions."
It's LP videos before LP videos ever existed!
***** And then when its cool, be the only asshole developer that wants money out of every video people make with their games, instead of encouraging like most developers do.
+Ricardo Vergara Nintendo ALLOWS let's plays
+Carl Bloke I never said they dont allow it, I said they are the only developer that wants money out of every video with nintendo footage and that includes lets plays, thats just incredibly stupid and stingy, they just dont understand its free publicity, most developers encourage lets plays and youtube content.
64 Double D? Damn that's huge.
You sir has won the internet
make a Sega Genesis - Did you know Gaming?
for you guys that were wondering 2000 yen is sixteen American dollars
Thank you! ( None sarcastic tone)
***** its actually 20$ lol
tyler myers cool, I always thought 2000 yen was 20 dollars
Hamster of the Decade Exchange rates rarely stay exactly the same, especially over long periods of time.
Deathbrewer yeah and i also think Asia just had a stock market crash
Nintendo does something ahead of its time, it didn't sell. (N64DD)
Nintendo does something that's with the current time, it didn't sell (Gamecube)
Nintendo does something that is behind for it's time, it doesn't sell (Wii U)
Either they're doing something wrong with the marketing, or people just like to hate Nintendo for no reason
Either that, or it's the people's fault that makes Nintendo work not right?
Talent maker NEEDS to be revisited. It seems like it could be hillarious with SD cards and 3ds system power
Wait whaaaat?! VII was gonna be on 64 after all? Awww. Man I wish that DD didn't fail. The 64 could have been even more epic.
That's a lie.....
No way....the game was better off on PS1, it wouldn't have achieved the same success.
Inert Brian I don't know about that. I think it would have been just as successful if not a bit more.
I'm pretty sure they jumped to Sony before they even knew what the success of it would be.
my mind was continually blown as this talked about what was released for the N64DD. i didnt know ANYTHING was released for it!
Wow, I knew the 64 had a lot of silly addons and peripherals, but I never knew it went THIS far. I could have taken this whole video as satire if I didn't know it was true.
It's Nintendo.. what exactly did you expect? When have they not had a bunch of silly/gimmicky peripherals for their systems? xD
Are you kidding me? Those peripherals were fucking awesome! It may not be impressive now, but for 1999 that was actually pretty groundbreaking! Get over yourself.
MooCowManHG I don't know, but i see them on other videogames as well. :3
Bitcoon Good. That'll teach you!
so ... nintendo was doing (trying) the online stuff before the other consoles ? Damn, seems way ahead of its time for home consoles.
They did it on snes
The Satella View was meant for online play ? I thought it was only for downloading episodic chapters and expansions for games.
Honestly... I have never been so lost in a Did You Know Gaming video until this one...
Yes, I did know gaming once. But we haven't spoken in years. I don't know if I know gaming anymore, to be honest. I still play the games though.
Well excuuuuse me princess.
Now I know how a meatball feels...
I wonder what's for dinner...
The N64 had an official capture card: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?
Wait, the N64DD could even connect to the internet?! That's REALLY impressive.
You ALMOST got me there, lol.
And the Famicom
But the Saturn could in 1996.
Popplio [PresStarToPlay] Eh, who cares? I've got the Wii Mini.
Also the SNES at the same year.
Wait... they had twitch-like streaming back in 1999? Fee or no fee, for 1999 and console at that... is pretty amazing. (Not even PC had anything close to that)
Could you imagine what Ura Zelda would have been like for the N64 DD. It would have been the very first DLC for a console.
Well the 64DD was trying something to be more ahead of it's time...sort of like Pokemon Crystal in Japan, which basically had a GTS in place with a way to connect the Gameboy to a cell phone?
I love how this is the 64th video by DYKG and it's about the Nintendo 64. Well played. Well played.
I miss the N64 days, those days were the shit!
The most memorable game was Superman 64, I mean it was SO fun and had so much variety. Who wouldn't wanna fly through rings?
Wow, that went from serious to sarcastic real quick there.
Seriouscastic? I dunno...
Alex Nurse N64 was the shit.
Superman 64 was shit.
***** clever...
***** i enjoyed it. Not the game but the console. Superman 64 was godawful.
*****
hahahahaha
Funny, N64 was ahead of its time. Now, Nintendo is kind of behind the times.
Holy shit, Nintendo was WAAAAAAAAAAY more advanced for that time. Unfortunately today is quite "the same". But i still love the company :D
nintendo has ALWAYS been ahead of the curve. they just don't dial it back a bit so the rest of the world can catch up.
remember when everyone said the DS was crazy? one year later and everyone had one.
morlock19
I never heard people saying the DS was crazy.
I know right!!
I have Pokemon Stadium and Super Mario 64.
Emily Marcum -.-
i have both of them and yeah they are my favorite too, but still it was very very limited, the 2 was the best of the best still
I love my N64 too!, i still playing nowadays :3, Conker´s BFD, Goldeneye, Both Zeldas, Smash bros..... I just love it :3
I remember the PS1's horrendous load times and how nice the N64's instant load times were by comparison.
Part 2 please!!! :D
My favorite part of this was seeing the original versions of some WarioWare microgames. I had no idea they had predecessors!
Nintendo is always ahead of its time. Forget the XBOX One and PS4. Nintendo 64 beats 'em all.
At the moment, it's barely even on par with time.
***** Amen.
Oh, yes, I know... when fanboyism and nostalgia cloud your thoughts and make you post senseless things...
***** Wut? Chill, dude, I was talking to the guy who started this thread. You should really learn how this comment system works so you don't make a fool of yourself anymore.
Always been a XBOX fan!
All I wanted was Earthbound 64 :( :( :(
Eh... I would rather have one on the Wii U or something like that, but I'm pretty sure they're done with the Mother series for good.
***** Thats a relief
NEINTENDO MASTER RACE. SUPERIOR GAMING.
Dat GoldenEye framerate pre-n64... That must be at least a 30 solid FPS.
N64 is like 22fps or something.
That narrator was brutal.
Wait, did I screw up? I voted for Skyrim?
WHat vote where? Why is everybody voting and I hav I missed something? I WANT TO VOTE TOO!
If they are just suggesting for the next DYKG I would say namco arcades!
nope, im pretty sure it's just a method of counting votes. they can see how many viewers were brought here by the skyrim annotation and compare it with the clicks on the other annotation.
Gemmellness WHere is the annotation?
Dang the N64 was pretty advanced for its time.
People who watch this video in the future are gonna be like, "Why the fuck is everybody saying Skyrim in the comments?! This is about N64!" lol
Groot omg you are a prophet!!! im watching it now and im just now wandering whats the deal with skyrim xddddd
I think they were justified in using carts for the console. Can you imagine how horrendous load times would be for a game like Ocarina of Time if it was running on PlayStation?
+leftyfourguns Patience is a virtue.
+leftyfourguns The game would've probably looked 2x or 3x better and or would've had a larger world as well.
Wow that disk drive shit was the most fascinating shit ever.
N64 could have had Final Fantasy 7!? I'm sad now.
if FF7 was on the 64, it would have had to use at least 7 carts. thats why square jumped ship to the playstation.
morlock19 All those cutscenes take up a lot of space.
6:36 Seems like Nintendo did livestreaming before it was a thing.
Holy shit. That 64DD thing was way ahead of its time.
N64 capture card cartridge? Holy smokes. Never knew that. Way ahead of its time. If only the Internet was as good as it is today. Dial-up sucked. lol
WHOA.... the Nintendo 64 is truly the best console ever...... N64DD part blew my mind
You guys should help Yuriofwind with his project to travel back in time and make the 64DD successful, so as to study its affects on the gaming world.
Oh the N64...Such a good system...So MANY great games:
Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, StarFox 64, Kirby 64, Mario Party 2, Banjo Kazooie, Super Smash Bros. Majora's Mask, Diddy Kong Racing, Paper Mario, Pokémon Stadium.
The N64 will always be my favorite video game console of all time.
Woulda been a different world of games if the 64DD stuck around and FFVII ended up on the N64.
It's really sad how cartridges ended up ruining so many of the N64's chances :( even better games, more third party support...it would've wrecked the PS1 pretty much everywhere.
gaming would be a very different landscape than it is now.
SKYRIM!!!
Man Nintendo needs to bring back the ideas of the 64DD, that would be SOO COOL. Not only that but it'd boost the Wii U's set
That's one of those ideas Nintendo should take off their headphones, or whatever they're wearing like to not listening to us. Imagine Ura Zelda for the Wii-U.
Thekinggamelon I know, they can make a whole line of games that work with it, not only that but I don't see anyone else useing the idea
Thekinggamelon Ura Zelda is Majora's Mask.
Holy fuck...the 64DD was WAY ahead of it's time...some epic shit..
damn N64DD did PS4 almost 20 years before the PS4
The Nintendo DD actually seems pretty cool
Apparently this channel now has 64 videos...I see what you did there...
Fun Fact: The N64 game Ridge Racer 64 has a car entitled "Ultra 64." It had full stats and was awarded to the player by completing all stages with the Z-Class speed.
Huh, so Nintendo was doing Sony's PS4 thing over a decade ago. Really makes you wonder why Nintendo is considered so online unfriendly these days :/
because nobody bought the stuff unfortunately, nintendo has been doing online gaming since the NES, but they all mostly failed, nintendo coul only come to one conclusion once the gamecube came out(and even then the gamecube had online)
Fantastic Video as always I would love to see a DYKG on the Suikoden Series maybe Done by Lucahjin
Everyone is talking about why cartridges are better than disks, but I have my own answer:
I think cartridges look cool and all.
They're also a better option now
wow the ideas that nintendo had were really revolutionary
It really was!, the add-ons with the 64DD is quite astounding to be able to have done that back then.
Too bad they abandoned any idea of revolutionizing and put the ball in Sony's court to further revolutionize the market.
BigBoxGamer What are you talking about? Nintendo lost its lead, but Sony didn't revolutionize anything whatsoever.
The Samurai of Gaming
i think he means with their good games or maybe im wring but sony did have amazing games
NautyEskimo They did have amazing games.
ive never heard of half this stuff yet it feels so nostalgic
Nintendo paying back everyone who bought into RandNet is just an awesome thing. No other company would do that.
Wrong, that was for their deal to make a CD-based add-on for the Super Nintendo.
I'm a ninty only fanboy, but the playstation one kicked ass. Still sad I can't play the tons of awesome games that came out for it!
So a failed nintendo console from 1999 had the same internet capabilities as the WiiU?
Hahaha
And the saturn had better 2d visuals, I don't pick favorites because of nostalgia, and I love many games from all 3 systems, each were better for specific genres.
you're aware that when FFVII was originally developed so was it planned for SNES, right? owo
For those that need the conversion, 2,500 Yen is ~25$
We all know how to divide by 100.
***** Some people might not know that it's 100 you divide by.
TheMultiYoshi I knew how to convert Yen to Dollars from a Japanese School Simulator. No, not the "You're a student at this School" kind, the "Manage a School as a Principal" kind.
All right so online gaming was a thing on the N64. Ill just file that under things that will blow a trolls mind back the 8-bit days folder
Online gaming was a thing before the N64. If I remember correctly the Sega Genesis was the first console to utilize online gaming. The Super Famicom had a similar service but I'm pretty sure it utilized radio to stream games rather than connecting it to the internet.
thequeenundisputed IT STREAMED GAMES!?
This Mario Kart Soundtrack behind the Video, awesome Choice *-*
The 64DD Was way too mistreated. It was ahead of its time.
That be soooo awesome if they sold all their art studio games here in the US back then. It was way ahead of its time.
Things don't just cease existing..
You can buy those things on the internet.
I knew every bit of this, but still interesting to watch.
Dammit DYK, I require more!
naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeerdddddddddddddd
Nitemare
Everyone is a nerd in their own way.
IdealIdeas100 yeah but he's a bigger nerd, nerd :P
Ps1>n64. You can't argue over it since ps1 destroyed n64 in sales and had more quality games.
*****
That, and I ultimately enjoyed N64 more than PS1 back around age 7-10. Yes, I had both consoles, with many of the popular (and unpopular) games for each. Opinions.
***** How is that shit logic. In this world majority rules am i right?
***** also insulting me over a video game shows how iintelligentyou are.
wolfman596 N64 games.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
personaly i enjoyed the n64 more since there were more multi-co.op games than there were for the PS1. spending enjoyable time with friends was so easier with the n64 than with the PS1. if i hadnt had that much friends at that time earlier, i would surely share the same opinion than u.
I wanna see a Gamecube did you know :) I feel there's so much facts and mysteries that no one knows about :D
Yeah like the secret gamecube intros!
Goldmario5 And Donkey Kong Racing!
Did you know the Game cube was originally called the Dolphin but was changed due to international controversy surrounding the inhumane hunting procedures of stray dolphins?
shawnz12ss Yeah, lol
shawnz12ss I found that out when I found the Dolphin emulator. lol
I have a N64, I had no idea that there were so many add-ons for it. I think mine is just the stock N64 Pikachu version... (I wish I had enough memory to save my star fox 64 game...)
Memory? Isn't it saved in the cartridges?
I've never needed extra memory storage, and I own like 20 N64 games.
OR get the 3DS remake.
oh god, Pokémon crystal... I have a copy, no saving... D:
I don't know if there is a more depressing moment in gaming than when you lose your save data in a Pokemon game.
I sign this, Mr. Freeman.
* signs *
InferiorBeing You just sold me your soul, dude. Wrong contract.
BadassFreeman Well, I hope the Food in Hell is without Meat, then. o,o
InferiorBeing Nope, we eat FSteak all day.
That capture card is way too cool.
At least half of that N64 DD stuff I didn't know about. Also, I remember either the Cruis'n arcade cabinet or some arcade game had a port where you could plug in your N64 Controller Pak on the side of the cabinet. (I guess to save your high score)
I was unaware of Perfect Dark requiring the expasion pak, considering I was able to play without one.
Without the expansion pak you could only play the multiplayer, iirc.
*****
I was able to play the entire game without one.
FalkonLink Yeah I'm pretty sure I remember being able to play just fine without the expansion pak.
Well, "just fine" meaning with a significantly LOWER framerate among other things, so you can imagine how that went.
MediaMunkee
Yeah, I didn't even know about the expansion pak was intended for Perfect Dark for about 5 years after I had finished it.
Or mabye the multiplayer was the only thing you couldn't play, I don't remember lol.
