In this video, I take you along as I sort through and organise my beloved collection of witchcraft books. As a practising witch, my collection has grown significantly over the years and it was time to give it some much-needed attention. I ended up missing out on my other bookshelves, as this video would have been longer than it already is, perhaps I will do that another day.
Whether you're a fellow witch or just a book lover I hope you enjoy this video. So grab a cup of tea, sit back, and let's get organised!
Books Mentioned (I would not recommend all):
- Art and Practice of Astral Projection - Ophiel (hard to find, sees astral projection as inner work but has lots of variety of techniques)
- Astral Projection - Dennings and Phillips (still in print, fairly good)
- Before you Cast a Spell - Carl McColeman (Wicca based, not for everyone, does cover some good points, better beginner books)
- Besom, Stang and Sword - Orapello and Maguire (American style traditional witchcraft, would recommend)
- Candle Burning Rituals - Marie Bruce (Pretty good)
- Candle Magic - Leo Vinci (Also decent, but not memorable)
- Candle Magic - Mystic Dylan (Very good, would recommend for beginners, but perhaps not for more advanced practitioners)
- The Complete Book of Numerology - David Phillips PHD (Very useful, very wordy)
- Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells - Judika Illes (very good, lots of historic spells, not all are safe to be reproduced but a good reference book for adapting spells)
- Encyclopedia of Vampires - Theresa Cheung (Good for those interested in undead mythology)
- Encyclopedia of Magical Creatures - John and Caitlin Matthews (Great for those interested in global spiritual and mythical creatures)
-Hearth Witch - Anna Franklin (Would definitely recommend)
- Mastering Witchcraft - Paul Huson (Would and do Recommend for beginners and those needing to go back to basics)
- Green Witchcraft - Ann Moura (It's fine, Wicca heavy, there are better)
- Green Witchcraft IV - Ann Moura (unread, so I'm not sure how much better it is)

As a librarian I applaud you in organizing your bookcase! 😄 I am starting to see more witchcraft books come through our library system.
That's awesome! There ZERO in my library system. I mostly do the used book thing. ❤️❤️
Fellow librarian here applauding your efforts - well done Hearth!
I noticed more in my local library too 😸
I love this!
That's very exciting! We always feel a bit underrepresented, especially in the US south, like me. ❤
As a fellow dyslexic practitioner. I relate to singing the entire alphabet song till you reach the letter 😂
I feel represented
I'm dyslexic and never got a love heart
I thought that was normal 🥲. Perhaps I should get tested.
@@selkrasouza6262I think it is! I'm not dyslexic, but I do this as well.
I used to work at a bookstore and I sang through the alphabet more times than I would care to admit
I’m not dyslexic and I do this. 😂 I also count on my fingers as an adult, and I suspect I may have dyscalculia.
Actually, you need a library because you are always going to acquire more books! Love the skulls and ghosts. Great videos.
Thank you for sharing this !. How I organise my books is as follows. I have a shelf for Spell and Ritual books, a shelf for Deities and History, a shelf for Magicka lPractice eg lesrning about Wicca or Traditional Witchcraft, a shelf for herbal, apothecary, crystals etc, and another shelf for divination.I keep a separate bookshelf for the books I'm currently reading or using and that I haven't read yet. I tried alphabetically organising them as you have, but I struggled with it, so I came up with this method, and it works for me. Yes, I own a lot of books !!! 💜🌛🌕🌜💜
And there's me thinking that I exaggerate with my 10 witchcraft related books 😆
@@sinjaja5836 love it xxx
This was such fun! The key for me was when you said the problem with alphabetizing is you have to maintain it, lol! I currently have my books categorized by subject - tarot books, folk magic, trad witchcraft, musician biographies, etc.. Being neurodivergent, this type of organizing won't drive me insane. I can just pop the book in anywhere in its proper category. You may want to do this in a different way - an "A" section, "B" section, etc., so you don't have to go through the alphabet every time. I totally relate to reciting abc's, lol!! 😊
@@m.m.6670 We always find a way. 🤣🤣✌️❤️🃏🪄🔮🕯🪬🌛🌕🌜❤️
I divide books into categories first, then alphabetically by author. But also just do all authors starting with the same letter together without alphabet using further.
I also catergorize by subject rather than by title or author!
I just did my bookcase recently. All of my witchy books and supplies are hidden in pretty boxes, in case any of my many deeply religious relatives visit. It turned out so cute!
All of my books(witchy and mundane) are organized by subject.
I tend to always organize my bookcase by category. For me, it just makes things a little easier to find. I also fill my bookcase with knick-knacks, though, no greenery (real or fake!). I like the greenery, I just might add some to my black bookcase!! Blessings!💜❤🥰
My librarian heart is bursting! ❤ Well done! Love watching you organize. We are constantly having to shift books in the library, so your method was not wrong at all!
While I don't have as many books as you do, my most treasured book is the first one I ever bought, Magical Rites from the Crystal Well. I like the knock knacks added, I have a bunch on my book shelves. I added small jewelry books with glass doors in between books. I put small goddess statues in the glassed in areas, and crystals or other small items in the drawers. If you decide the greenery is too fussy, I suggest taking it down and painting ivy on the edges of your shelves. That way you could have the greenery without the fussiness or dust collecting. I do love your videos!
This was a courageous undertaking! I have to organize my bookcases as well. For visual interest, I like to lay some books horizontally which leaves cubbies for art.
My classification scheme goes something like: subject or genre, then subdivided by sub-topic, geography and/or language, then alphabetized by author or title if multiple authors. Oversized books are kept separately on their own shelf
My favourite witchcraft book is no longer with me and I cannot remember the name of it, I've searched everywhere for it on line using basic keywords.
I got it when I was a kid, I asked my very Christian mother if she could buy it for me just to test her. Surprisingly, she did buy it for me and cited "free will" as her reason for letting me have it. Years later when I was a teenager, I was encouraged to burn it for obvious reasons. It was a non-fiction book about the history of witchcraft and it was aimed at late primary school aged kids/early teens. It was a large hard cover book that covered a wide variety of topics, and it featured famous paintings, etchings, and photographs of spiritual practitioners and figures from mythology. If I remember correctly, I think the page on the Evil Eye was the same page that detailed the significance of the numbers 0-9 in numerology. If this sounds familiar to anyone and you know the book I'm talking about, please let me know because I'd love to hunt for another copy on eBay if I can.
I LOVE your matching earrings and necklace
I love the book - Before you Cast a Spell. I read it based on your recommendation from one of your book review videos and I agree with you, it really seems to be a foundational book for anyone starting in the practice of witchcraft.
Ditto
I just organized my witchy & non-witchy books too! although I don't have a proper bookshelf, just a little cubby in a side table 😅
I took a bit of a break from my practice due to mental health issues, so looking through the books I read reminded me of what drew me to the craft & re-inspired me! 💜
Ooh yay I’m early! So excited to see all the witchy books! I can’t buy any bc I’m closeted, but at least I can see if there are any I might be able to pass off as normal!
You can always try digital or e-book versions, not all books have them, but the most popular ones usually do.
@@HearthWitchI’ll have to see if I can find them! Thanks for the help!
Your a true inspiration love from a young english pagan
I love this so much! I’m such a book nerd and it makes my nerdy little soul smile just watching anything with books but also witchy books just hits differently to regular books 🥰😍❤️❤️ I didn’t realise how long your hair actually is too! It’s beautiful! 😍🥰❤️❤️xxx
Hearth, if the arm of the sofa is more comfortable than the sofa itself, methinks it's time for a new sofa...!
That thing about keeping random crap on the bookcase and altar. My bookcase IS my altar, and the amount of random shit I've had to pick up and find where it goes is astronomical
Love this video. Sometimes if I want to fit more books or add knickknacks I will lay a couple books flat between other books and stack a couple then add a little tchotchkes , or trinket on top.
You can also stand a book flat against the back of the shelf facing our and add something in front of it, this may take up good shelf space. I like your decorative items visible it brings out your personality.
😊
One book that's struck me that I like a lot is Backwoods Witchcraft. Defs more American-based, but it's really neat; I haven't finished it, but it's left an impression that it's a really good one.
I organize mine by topic. Like all my spell books together, spiritual ones, crystal, green/ herb witch together etc
Is it possible to leave a gap on each shelf so you can display your curios? And that way, there will be a place to slot in new books as you buy them.
You recommended DM Craig's Modern magick, as a helpful guide in Ceremonial magic.
If you want an alternative, I warmly recommend the books "Magic and the Magician" , "Apprenticed to Magic" , by Walter Ernest Butler.
Old books, but still in print and very useable.
He writes in a simple, pedagogical and lucid way, and they present great easy exercises and explanations.
Butler, was the founder of the magical order SOL along with Gareth Knight, and a pupil of Dion Fortune.
All his books are excellent.
Now that you have this master list, keep it current when you get new books! I'd break down the shelves into A, B, etc and number the shelves of where they should be located (like A-4). A column to keep track of who you loan a book to. I need to do this. Thank you for the inspiration!
On loaning books, I LOVE loaning books with the request that people write thoughts and notes in the margins, as legibly as possible, and if they use highlighters, a different color! It's like having a written conversation and often brings insight into deep topics.
Finally, I really appreciate how real you let this process become. 😌
Thank you!
Edit: per your request, many of my favorites might not be considered "witchy" by some but the circumstances around the book coming to me were too syncronistic and impactful to my path to be anything but witchy. "Do I Have to Wear Black?" by Mortellus, "Medium Mentor" by MaryAnn DiMarco, "Earth Magic" by Marie D Jones, "The Little Work" by Durgadas Allon Duriel, and "Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself" by Dr Joe Dispenza.
I'm going to have to watch the video again when I can pause and add more titles to my wish list 😂
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has to sing the alphabet to find where a letter is! this was a really chill and fun video!
I recently organized my books by color! I’m read the pagan book of living and dying right now and think it’s a very important read!! Also working my way through psychic witch (if you’ve read it you know what I mean by WORK) once I finish one or the other I’m going to really start on veneficium !!
Was I the only one waiting for you to call out "BoOoOk!" Like in hocus pocus when you started calling out to the books 😂
I've been organising all my books today too!
Oh dear. I feel your pain. I have several bookshelves that a friend of mine (at the time) did me the favor of "organizing" for me when I was ill. I still haven't undone the mess she made. I'm proud of you for tacking this project.
This was so fun to watch, it had me laughing. And I just loved the "blooming hell I can't feel me legs".
Found your channel few days ago. 👍
One of my favorite books is not so much witchcraft but more about the hauntings and legends from my area titled, “Mountain Ghost Stories and Curious Tales of Western North Carolina”. However, I am currently reading “Magical House Protections”.
As an author, this may be one of my favorite of your videos. 😂
So excited!
The inner temple of witchcraft by Christopher Penczak has been the most prominent magical book for me so far. 💜
I actually have over 1500 books ,I put them all on a spread sheet, title, author, speciality and which shelf the book can be found on, I started the sorting during lockdown and now I add any new book to the spread sheet. I have converted what was a spare bedroom into a library. I'm glad I have done it but would not like to be starting it from scratch again. I also have made a copy of the spread sheet on a memory stick so I will not lose it if my laptop goes down.
I organize by subject alphabetically and then by title. I found it pretty helpful.
I like the greenery. I would use double sided sticky tape to keep it attached to the shelves and books would not have to hold the leaves down.
Your book library is wonderful!
I love your chaotic thinking. I feel your frustrations and enjoy watching you organize books.
Something I've done that's really helpful (though not up to date) is I have a specific category on my GoodReads called "Library." It has the bonus of both alphabetizing my books and telling me how many books I own, as well as being at a bookstore and being able to search for books to see if I already own it.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾!.. Very well done. I have a room that I'm trying to set up a Library in. {yeah, years of work. Not done..] Yours looks good. As a Mage my most important book is Manly P. Hall's "Secret Teachings Of The Ages." That was my Text Book when I was starting. It is very entertaining and insteresting to watch your posts. Thank you for your work.🤗👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I love your videos I always wait for your videos your such a great help ❤❤
love organizing books but my witchy books are more organized as divination books, spell type books, lore/myth/story books, and then like candle/cord/etc. magic books. and a herb section, crystal section. basically i categorize
Bookcases need nick knacks! I really like to file books by topic. Easy to find them that way.
Loved this video. I always love hearing your book reviews, why you liked it and why you didn’t. It has helped me find some great resources, and also helped me avoid some books that wouldn’t have been suitable.
Home decor videos are always fun. Would love to see the new work room when it’s finished!
Fourteen Lessons in Yogi Philosophy. Perhaps not my favorite as such but an extremely important occult text in my view as someone who identifies more of an occultist than a witch.
Your book videos are my favorite! You’ve given me so many great suggestions please keep them coming!
A book video from Hearth 🎉 yesss❤
This was so soothing and motivating to organize my own books. Thanks for this video!
So much hard work!!! ❤
This is so nicely different, I enjoyed this and you're funny while you reorganize your books and what a under taking of organizing your book alphabetically. Wow!!!
I love your videos! You’re so fun to watch & I always learn something. Psychic Witch is my current favorite.
I really love your videos and how you explain everything with deities, spirit fairies etc btw love your look 🔮🖤🖤
We have TJ Max and Home Goods here in the US. I love those stores and cannot walk in without buying something
Lovely video!! Your bookshelves are very nice, i hope i can have nice bookshelves like yours once i have some more space!! Listening to you organizing your bookshelves helped to inspire me to reorganize my current room a bit, so thank you for that!! :D!
3:09 speaking of chaos.
I have the Rider Waite Tarot deck and I took the card that has a bunch of legal writing on it & drew over it a sort of rough cartoon image of just a chaotic being
I called the card chaos it's a pretty straightforward card upright it's chaos upside down its order.
Really enjoyed this, it was so calming
It's beautiful with the knickknacks!!!❤
🎉 You did it! That is such a big pain to alphabetize all the books! I also have dyslexia and that really makes things more difficult. For me, I use visual place marker- like a small pot would separate a group of letters from other like A thru C from D thru G, and so on. It also serves as a book stopper- which can be removed to add more books for later. The best advice I've ever received is that when you organize high traffic areas is to leave room to grow! So I suggest more decor! And maybe some more empty space on the very bottom. It also is a great way to use more of your lovely decor too. I also enjoyed that you gave recommendations of the books as you went through them. ❤ Thank you for all your wonderful videos!
One thing I do for bookshelves sometimes is I use my knick knacks for spacers or book ends. That way they're on the shelf, but if I need more book space I can move them.
I love the knick knacks!
This is really entertaining to watch. I've never seen someone become so scrambled organizing books, it was like a... calm descent into playful madness, ha ha!
Oh, Hearth, I love your ideas!
Oh mannnn, Green Witchcraft was one of my very first books as a baby witch when I was a teenager! 😂 I've still got it on my shelf, I have all of my older books from then, even if I don't follow them these days.. I have even lent them out to friends' tweens and teens that were curious and exploring themselves. :)
LOL! This was a GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for your humor!
Sorting out the bookshelves too, try to put same subjects together, double rows. My favorite most used book Natural Magick - John Michael Greer.
Have 2 copies it was republished as Encyclopedia of Natural Magick , buy it again thinking it was a new book.
I love this video, it gave inspiration in my organization. my large bookcase I have my larger knickknacks on that top shelf , I got some little candle riser to give some of the items some different hight and depth and then my smaller items in front of the books.
I just ordered The Witch's Apothecary. So excited to read it once I get it!
Definitely a good idea to have breaks after each letter. Easier to slot new books in.
Great work as always 🤙
Totally used this video to add to my reading list lol. Thanks for all the recommendations.
Hearth. Celtic Magick books go under C
The Witchcraft books on the first bookshelf is Alphabetized by the names the Authors ( my bookshelf)
I have the opposite problem...
Dyscalculia my nemesis
Yes a small break once or twice per shelf is a good design idea. You could have goodie and trinkets in small groups too. You can also turn a shirt stack of books flat. Then the flat part van hold some trinkets. It gives interest in appearance and gives you a space for crystals and figures.
You are like e.m.m.i.e on the tubes. So I'm very happy I found you. ❤❤❤❤
I really love your necklace set 💖
Fantastic suggestions as always. I am definitely making sun water! I will also be charging items to bring fire energy when I need it.
My partner and I just moved to a house that is half finished, and the chaos of reorganizing is in full swing. I related to this video so much as I’m gonna be completely decorating once the house is finished. I also am completely in love with psychic witch by Matt auryn, it is amazing!
Thanks for this video. I was one of the people who requested it. My current favorites are Psychic Witch and Of Blood and Bones.
I forgot to say I LOVE your art, too! ❤😂❤
It's so pretty.
i just recently organized my witchcraft library. they are a physical representation of my book of mists and shadows.
As I will be relocating soon I admire your commitment! Moving my spirit room and all of my tools, I’m holding my breath a bit!
I would love to hear a review of the Witches Apothecary!
If the greenery is in the way you can do a peel and stick background behind the books. Mine has a black background with leaves and cherries on it, every other shelf, and I love the look!
Unrelated but i am loooving this look! The makeup, the jewellery are just 😍😍😍
You give me jade vibes from victorious, giirrlll you are preeetttyy
Loved this video❤️
Definitely interested in knowing more about that witch's apothecary book!
Raymond Buckland Big Blue Book..This book was my first magical Book..❤
Great video & enjoyable to watch. Good to see you got it all sorted to how you want it. I don't have many books, in fact I have not been reading as much as I once was, I guess the books I have read the most times are "Born In Albion" by David Williams & Kate West & "A Witch Alone " by Marian Green. I really should get back into reading more. Watching you doing your books has inspired me to do more reading, thank you Hearth. 👍💚.
Great job! I have library envy. I’d love to be able to have all mine on one big shelf. Mine are scattered around the house.
The organizer in me is dying to come over and do this for you 😂 I love organizing ❤
Thanks Hearth, love it
I love that besom stang and sword book! I wish it came in hardcover. I have it physically and on audiobook.
I think my most beloved witchcraft books are from Louisa Francia. They were also my first ones, because i found them in my moms bookshelf when i was 13 or so. It is about german witchcraft and i enjoy her style of practice and writing a lot.
I always organise my books by subjekt.
Realy like these Videos! Thanks🤗
Very interesting, thanks for sharing 💜🧡. I'm going to get the Paul huson book. I loved practical solitary magic by Nancy B watson, you recommended before. I like the ivy on your bookshelves, there is a white version of Blu-Tack you can use to keep it in place.
I'm a beginner and slowly working through Besom Stang and Sword (great recommendation, thank you!)
I very much enjoyed The Coelbren Alphabet by John Michael about Welsh runes!
I'm quite late to comment on this video, but you did an amazing job placing your books in alphabetical order. What a struggle though, you poor thing!
Should you decide to reorganize your bookshelves once again, may I suggest using focal pieces like the silver skulls you got from TK Maxx to separate each letter of the alphabet? They would make the space appear more eclectic, while allow you to more easily add to your growing trove of books.
Anyhow, this video was very endearing and I would be thrilled to see a follow-up or revisit in the future. Best wishes for the New Year!
Looks wonderful
Avalon Within by Jhenah Telyndru is the first Avalonian book that I ever read. I was already a Faery Witch, but I was uncertain of my specific path, and this one cemented that Avalon was the specific path I was meant to walk as a Faery Witch! It’s also what inspired my name here and the name of my blog (White Rose of Avalon). So yea, I have to say Avalon Within is the most pivotal book for me!
I'm still on the beginning of my journey so I haven't read that many books yet. I think I like Juliet Diaz' Witchery because it's a really gentle introduction, I read Kelden's Crooked Path at the same time and while I really enjoyed the proposed exercises, I decided to skip many of them, since I didn't feel secure enough to summon/ encounter. Recently I finished the Wiccapedia which was given to me as a Christmas present from my sister in law. I'm not Wiccan myself so I had some difficulties with it. Especially after reading the Crooked Path, the Wiccapedia just came across as superficial on some chapters. The authors raise some good points though and some exercises I really enjoyed. Currently on my TBR are piling up: The Book of English Magic, The Dark Side of Japan and The Sorcerer's Secrets - after this video, I have added roughly 10 more books to this list... send help... or books
