One of these excellent movies that are just perfect for watching in the evening. It is really sad that he had to undergo a severe operation in the 1920s and ended up with a morphine addiction that spiraled his life into a downward slope.

Peter Lorre is so timeless, especially in these old B movies. All the other characters seem very much of the 30's and 40's, but Lorre looks like he could be in a movie today, and it would make sense.
It would totally make sense because Peter's characters aren't restricted to one time period. As you said, he is timeless. That is why he is still popular with many almost 50 years after his death.
absolutely, he is so timeless, I remember his frightening performance in the German film M ..a town is looking for a murderer.. when he played the insane child killer
Lorre does have a talent for elevating whatever he's in just be being there, doesn't he? Such an oddly endearing character he's playing. Doesn't seem evil, exactly. Just determined and really tired. Honestly I think he's better in these types of roles that when he's playing a straight evil character. Not that he's not good at them, just a bit of a wast of his talents, because he's both terrifyingly creepy and adorably funny. Little bit of a shame he got typecast as the former so much.
I'd seen this a time or two before. Thanks for posting so I'd find it again. I just read that this was Lorre's first American film. I'd read before that he didn't much like his career in The States. Too bad. No matter that Donlevy wasn't as memorable as Lorre, I still appreciate seeing him too.
So entertaining. I just finished watching Lorre in The Face Behind the Mask. It is also a great B movie. The Verdict with him and Greenstreet seems not to be on UA-cam. I'd love to see it. By the way Donlevy is terrific in "Impact."
SO underrated, mainly because people did not know what to make of it when it was released. Today, we are more comfortable with spoofs, which is what it obviously is..."NO, one look is NOT enough..."
@@robertmusacchio9409 Absolutely! Especially the scene where Humphrey Bogart's Sam Spade having roughed up Cairo asks why he won't stick around and Lorre replies in an offhand way that he's tired and wants to go to bed.
What are we even discussing here? That movie is brilliant. BRILLIANT. The characters esp Gimpy's are soo so so well written. And the story too. It's so interesting and tragic. peter is wonderfull in it. Ofcourse. But besides of the brilliance of his acting and his character, the rest of the characters are also brilliant. Even that annoying young man has certain intersting aspects. Great direction and all. Just watch Peter's clips if you dislike it..but why bother coming here ?
+Antidote NYHC I understand your frustration over the "let's just give up and quietly die" ending. Although, in terms of strict melodrama logic: Lorre's character is shot and slowly dying anyway, the pilot is scalded / blinded from the hot engine oil sprayed in his face, and the old guy is heartbroken over his young wife's betrayal & departure. It's as if these guys had to drop all of their personal agendas in order to -- for a brief span of time -- feel a sense of shared humanity and simply embrace a common fate. Then again, maybe that's just a hot / steaming load of B.S., huh? ;-) Yes, maybe it is.
Well. Peter Lorre turned out, in the end, to be not so evil and nasty. Otherwise, if something goes wrong with your airplane in mid-flight, just get out on the wing and fix it. But if it crashes in the water, no problem it'll float ... until just before a life boat, from a passing steamer, shows up to make the rescue. Thank you for posting moonshiny74. Sound is "sideways" but resolution excellent.
Yes, I do. I have most of Peter's movies except for Der weisse Daemon, Schuss im Morgengraeun, Les Requins du pétrole, Fünf von der Jazzband, Du haut en bas, and Double Confession.
While this film may not be the best Peter Lorre movie in the world, I do think it should be considered as one of the best that showcases he’s range as an actor. He’s being both very quirky and scarily serious at the same time. This is definitely a movie where if I wanted to show someone who Peter Lorre was, this would be the first movie ever think of.
Strange movie but fairly good. The old guy that was going after his girlfriend I don't understand why he didn't just tread water or hang on to the other guy with the vest. That didn't make any sense at all because he was wealthy and had already reconciled that he wasn't going to get the girls anyway and was okay with it. Pretty stupid ending.
This.is one of Peter's finest moments. Great great acting and such a beloved character. Much away from all the stereotypical stuff they had him do. Who doesn't love Gimpy?
Brian Donlevy lied his way into the Army at age 14, served in Mexico, and then went to France where he flew with the Lafayette Escadrille. He was still only 17 at the end of the war, and went on to the Naval Academy, but after 2 years dropped out to become an actor.
I had this movie all wrong! From the clips I'd seen, and the first 20 minutes, I expected something very simplistic. Ended up feeling very Tarantino-esque!
Alfred Hitchcock once described that "thing" that everyone is after (in this case - the propeller plans) is what he called a "MacGuffin." But as a draftsman I know any serious design will lend itself to simply being folded and placed in an envelope. Any and every design of this MacGuffin's plan would take up MANY pages of very large design drawings. And since they didn't have the advantage of computer drives or flash drives (like Mr. Snowden) - I wonder if the MacGuffin is actually in that envelope.
Hmmm, great movie except for the last 20 minutes or so when it all turned rather silly. First the crash into the sea - a power-dive from 15K feet (or whatever) and nobody wearing any restraint - and big loose metal boxes in the cabin....they bounce a bit on the water but everyone is ok (except Ace who got blinded by the gauge blowing out). Then the plane sits floating on the water for about an hour or three, not even resting engines-down (which it would do in reality). Sorry, I'm being a nit-picker...I did enjoy it, Colonel Gimpy was the best.Colonel.ever! Thanks for the upload, always like Brian Donlevy too 💖 🇨🇦
1931's M, directed by Fritz Lang has got to be my favorite film w/Peter Lorre. He's speaking German in this, as it's a German film (this is before Lang sold out & went to Hollywood to direct dumbed down films in the 40s, etc)
I will see what I can do. We are extremely busy at work for the next several months and I am in the middle of planning a new website, so it might be a while. I will let you know.
B movie, what can you say? But the ENDING ... ridiculous. Written either by an idiot or FOR them. In THAT calm water, anyone could have gotten out to swim long enough to be rescued.
On the contrary it was an inspired ending...."Three on a match...superstitious, Baron?" "Only of men who were born bad and grew-up worse". I think it's obvious they didn't want to be rescued.
"Beware of pretty faces that you find. A pretty face can hide an evil mind. Be careful what you say. You'll give yourself away. Chances are you won't live to see tomorrow." Johnny Rivers
Supporting roles were always Peter's "thing", though, so we never saw much of him in a leading role. Even before he was typecast here in America he was often cast in supporting roles and became probably the best known character actor in the world (even to this day) for his ability to steal a scene. I beg to differ about him not being so good as a lead. He was excellent in CRIME AND PUNISHMENT and M.
OK I totally take it back ...he was a great actor .. the stranger I think was another one ...and a few spy movies he was the lead...very under rated ... I really love him.
Maximilian Taggart is seriously wounded, Ace is blind, and both have only the gallows to look forward to (they each have committed murder), and Fleming's depressed and is no young man.
I don't get it. Couldn't the others just get out and float until the rescue boat arrived? The movie wasn't quite as bad as I thought it would be when they did that stupid song and march in the beginning. It's always nice to see Brian Donlevy. He can always bring a weak movie up a notch. As for Peter Lorrie...he was really great. He should have gotten a better agent.
Donlevy's playing a blinded pilot with nothing to look forward to than prison, Ralph Morgan has had a titanic blow to his ego because his younger wife left him, and Lorre's seriously wounded and a candidate for prison too, if not the gallows.
Silly ending. Why couldn't Ace and Fleming swim for it? The third guy was pulled into the lifeboat just as the plane was sinking. Nonsensical. Otherwise quite enjoyable.
Hitler had been in power for 3 years and Germany was massively ramping up its weapon production. In two years it would invade Czechoslovakia.... Germany probably did have a huge network of spies in the aircraft industry. Not that Germany had much to learn from the US:- Germany was _far_ more advanced in 1936. England was another matter - their aircraft were better than the a Germans at that time (Hawker and Supermarine were the best in the word up to 1940, after which things evened out somewhat).
Isn't if funny / strange that neither pilot has mentioned their Compass, their Heading, Dead Reckoning, or shown any signs of a sextant ?? Perhaps it was intentional to throw off Mr. Moto / Col.
