- First of all: YES, this is taken directly from the horse's mouth. It was posted on Infected Mushroom's site many years ago (maybe it still is?), and I downloaded it back then. I just thought it would be fun to watch for musicians and fans, who are oblivious to, or interested in, the way it was done in the past. I used DOSBox to open my good old Impulse Tracker, ran the file straight through that, and used DOSBox's amazing video-capture function, which happily included the audio.
Erez Aizen of Infected Mushroom didn't start in IM as many believe. He has been an active musician since the mid-90's, when he and his friends were making music, using modems to exchange the files and chat with each other. The 4 friends (including Domestic) formed Shidapu and gained local fame. Later, Shiva Shidapu was formed comprised of just Erez Aizen and Jörg Kessler (DJ Jörg).
Most of the music made by these guys, was produced in Impulse Tracker, a sequencing and sample-manipulation program, much like ProTools/Cubase/Reason/Fruityloops/Ableton, only this was of course a DOS-program, with little space for pretty glitter or any kind of movable window-frames, and with no plugins as such etc..
As a musician I think it's amazing to see what they've done with their samples, just by controlling length, pitch, note, vibrato and a few other nifty things, on some rather rough samples. They even make their own delays, simply by playing the same sample a bit later on different tracks. This is not the final FINAL version; a few sounds are missing, per example the guy saying "AUCH!" (or something) at one point, and a few others, but I think this is the basic file, and then they must have added more stuff in post-production.
I've tried to control the program's environment as it plays, to maximize the amount of information you can see, as it's very difficult to make out exactly what's happening, when many samples play at once, because of the cramped space.

The original has a few more instruments and samples. It's very much advised to hear that one. This is like a beta-version.
If you obtain the file, you could rip the channels manually, by recording the output from your PC, while listening to the song in Impulse Tracker, and simply mute all channels but the one you want to sample.
When psy/goa trance wasnt all about tech and production but feelings and trips. Erez was phenomenal with solo tracks as well like Diffusion, Santorini, Equilibrium and more. No wonder he made it to be on the top of psytrance scene with Infected mushroom but to be honest i miss his old tracks more. So many good tracks
I love those tracks, as well. I listened to the last two thousands of times!
Lets not forget that Erez is the mastermind behind the melody of one of the most melodic psy-trance tracks ever , For the people with Yahel yet Yahel got all the kudos for it.

I'm glad someone read it :) I think it's very interesting, as well. If you follow along at the bottom of the screen, you can see an example of when they do delays, if you go to around 0:53 and look for the sample "Ethnic pipe". It is being played on tracks 4, 5 and 6, so it's a double-delay, and you can see on the tracks that they play e.g. an "F-8" note, so a high F, but they manipulate the starting pitch and other things on each track to make it do that ethnic vibrato after triggering the sample to play. This thing is a masterpiece.
Ah, good old Impulse Tracker. I had a lot of fun with it back in 1999 :)

HAhaha.. I see Impulse tracker, click it./.. and off course it's one of the 90's (and on)front-runners of Psy. Shiva Shidapu! Namaste! You (guys) have given me so much over the years. My best memory was IM in ... Belgium? or was it Germany... anyway it was phenomenal.

ahhhh! i have wanted this from the first time i hear this tune back when it came out around 1996 ! then i Tracked down FastTracker and started to make some music!!

Unfortunately the file is locked somehow, so you can't extract stuff from it. But if you're really keen, you can write down the notes and such, and then try to rip the sounds by solo'ing each track while recording with DosBox or something.

The .it file is locked, so neither you nor I can change anything in it, and I wouldn't if I could. It does sound a bit like the beginning of GourmetRace, although set in a minor scale, making this sound less "happy". It might be that one of the Shiva Shidapu members played Kirby Super Star, and was influenced by it, since it came out about 2 years before this track was released. I don't know.

UltromanTheTacoman Yea probably (late response ;P), it might just be that OpenMPT just ignores the thing that makes the file locked... I mean, if you can open it, seeing the notes and playing them, you could just edit them aswell right?
