Just watched it for the first time... holy shit that was amazing. Amazing visually, great narratively, and the concept of replacing the speech with song was both beautiful and perfectly executed. Definitely one of my favorite films now.
Umbrellas is heartbreaking but Rochefort gives me a weirder, more melancholic feeling. So much happiness but so many instances of almost missing the right person and so on. I love them both for different reasons
@@jacobharris4838 No way. Young Girls is a very good (maybe even great) musical. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most perfect films, period, of all time. Totally different. IMHO, of course.
I watched this in high school for French class I want to say like 5ish years ago and it absolutely destroyed me emotionally... I always come back here to watch this beautiful trailer bc it hits so damn hard. Thank you.
Saw it 5 Years ago in an Art class in Ireland. Felt pretty much the same while watching it the first time. Suddenly saw the trailer half a year ago and it hit me really hard
I saw this movie in Korea while I was in high school. I was falling in love with movie immediately and wanted marry French and five years later I married French man and have five children. This movie is the top of love story of all time . Classic and romantic , priceless heart wrenching!!
Nino Castelnuovo's facial expression at the end of the trailer is not comparable to anything I have ever seen. It's just a trailer and it still makes me cry
@Nathan34370 My favorite musical films tend to be the ones that I personally find to be a little bit more unique. Of course I also love some of the classics. Just to give you a clear idea, these are my top ten PERSONAL favorite musical films in order: 1. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg 2. Inside Llewyn Davis 3. RRR 4. West Side Story (2021) 5. Once 6. Bo Burnham's Inside 7. Singin' In The Rain 8. Beauty And The Beast (1991) 9. The Young Girls Of Rochefort 10. Mary Poppins
J'étais un petit garçon de 6 à 8 ans. J'ai été tellement touché. Les larmes m'ont appris l'amour, la joie et la douleur. J'ai maintenant 60 ans et, heureusement, je l'ai atteint. L'amour est la raison de tout.
Adieu Michel Legrand RIP, you've left us beautiful music. This, Windmills of My Mind, What Summer knows...and have just watched The young ladies of Rochefort (Demoiselles de Rochefort), which also inspired La-La-Land. Merci.
If I could press million times "like" button I would do it...well, instead of it I will watch this million times!!! Brilliant! Wonderful! Perfect! Love from Russia💝
Cette an incomparable et uniqueé film de Demy. El inicio de la pelicula es una belleza la coreografía y logística. Como quisiera que en mi trabajo asi me despidiera de mis compañeros cantando. Merci Agnes pour la restoration.
Thanks to the early days of Netflix when I discovered so many great films. Now it's contemporary garbage. Discovering Catherine was the best thing ever to happen to me in film and we both have the same birthday.
Patricio Espinoza Goycochea YO VIVI ESA HISTORIA , HABIENDO VISTO EL ESTRENO EN BUENOS AIRES CON EL AMOR DE MI VIDA. CASUALMENTE ERAMOS MUY PARECIDOS A LOS INTERPRETES Y YO ERA MECANICO.
I saw it in college w my a friend & we & eventually the whole cinema laughed through the whole, as we saw it, stupid sentimental saga. For me Deneuve became a great actress w Indochine. Every film since then has been good. Saw her again recently in Elle S'en Va (She's Leaving), a grandmother, & she was magnificent.
Everyone's comparing La La Land to this, a film I loath because it turned me into an idiot. I was 13 in 1964 when an aunt I'll never forgive decided to take me to my first foreign film, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which was in French and entirely sung. For years, I thought "foreign" films were those weird films where everybody sang everything.
@Das Kinophile ENTP then explain why La La Land used the plot of Umbrellas of Cherbourg? It is not an homage if it chooses to rip from the core of the story. La La Land is essentially a rip off, a remake that did not have remake rights compared to Aronofsky's Perfect Blue remake - Black Swan.
UnbelievabIeMontages, The plots share similar themes, yes, but they're not nearly beat by beat the same plot. And it's not even as if the director tried to keep the similarities a secret, he claimed "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" as an influence. Calling La La Land a ripoff is like calling "The Great Beauty" a ripoff of "La Dolce Vita".
Quite possibly the prettiest film ever made.
The only films that compare for me are Barry Lyndon, and I am Love which seems like it took a lot of inspiration from this one.

Just watched the Young Girls of Rochefort... Which I think is even a bit superior

Criterion's restoration of this is gorgeous!

One of the best films ever made. One of my all-time favorites. Definitely find the time to surrender to the screen and watch this spectacular movie.
I am a great fan of Pedro Almodovar's films, but I must say this is my favorite, non-English film, ever.
I love how you edited the trailer. It works both for those who haven't watched the film and those who already went deep into the film. Class!
yes! I JUST watched it for the first time and this trailer gave me so much feels
I also love the trailer, it's like tribute video of the film with song
Shimmering colors, haunting atmosphere, irrisitable and unforgettable and wow that beautiful night time snowy winter ending.
That ending is stunning, I have such a huge soft spot for films that with sad snowy scenes
The dude is gorgeous.
Catherine Deneuve is a goddess. So beautiful.
Nino Castelnuovo's facial expression at the end of the trailer is not comparable to anything I have ever seen.
It's just a trailer and it still makes me cry
The actress playing the mom was a beautiful lady!
This to me, is the greatest musical film ever made.
Definitely the best of the 1960s.
