I purchased 5 Halley's Comet dragon fruit from Home Depot in November of last year. The northern Califonnia grower incorrectly stated on the tag that the Halley's Comet was self-pollinating. I'm sure that there are many of us that will not be successful growing dragon fruit, so I contacted the nursery and told them what I learned on your channel and the Spicey Exotics website. I asked the grower to please change the tags and to please consider carrying Vietnamese White in order for us to cross pollinate our Halley's Comet. They are looking into the matter now. Thank you so much for your informational videos. I'm learning so much from your channel!
That’s amazing that you’re helping out all the future dragon fruit buyers! That is so important to inform the nursery about these info so they can sell plants that actually produce fruits for their customers. You are awesome! Thanks for continuing to watch and support my channel. You are appreciated!
@Blueskies I bought Sugar Dragon and Dark Star (which are self pollinating) and drafted portions on to my Haley's Comet. In the future, I'll stick to only self pollinating varieties! ;-)
Thanks for this, wow..I will follow your steps and hopefully, my dragon fruit flowers will also bear fruits. Thankfully, I planted two varieties from Vietnam, the white and the pink one. Yay!! Thank you for your wonderful videos!😄
Thanks for your passion and love for dragon fruits. I love them so much. I’m from Nicaragua and I didn’t plant my dragon fruit, it’s really wild and it comes from the land next to me. Today they all bloomed. The beauty of Mother Earth is deeply in each of them. With this video you encouraged me to plant different varieties so I can help them grow healthier. Estoy enamorada de la Pitahaya y me emociona mucho que hay personas como vos que comparten su amor de esta forma.
woa, while learning about pollination I came across ur vids. I think these plants my dad has been "carrying around" are dragon fruit. Came from his Grandma. probably near 100 year old plants. he literally takes them indoor and outdoor every year. Heater in the barn just to keep the plants warm in winter. red cactus like fruit which is yummy.
mine is going to bloom soon for the first time. I don't know what variety it is, because my grandma gave me a cutting 5 years ago from her 25 yr old plant, so it was really informative for me. thank you
Congrats on your first bloom! I remember how excited I was when I had my first bloom and was staring at the flower sitting in a chair for it to open. Pollinating it the first time with a q-tip, now I use a brush. It's much easier this way. I'm glad that you were able to find this video helpful, I'm always hesitant to record videos at night because its so dark but I just make it up with providing a lot of narrative to keep it interesting. 😁
It seems pollens from self-fertile dragon fruits (such as Vietnam White) are what is usually used for cross pollination. Question, can pollens of self-sterile dragon fruits also be used for cross pollination? Thank you very much for your informative videos.
Thanks for this man. I came on UA-cam to understand how to pollinate... as I just got 5 flowers tonight! Gonna go pollinate!!. But wanted to ask.. why doesn't the one plant accept.the pollen from its own kind? It sounds so crazy!? Is there a reason for this?
wow, amazing you know what you are doing. I wonder in situations when one does not know if a variety can self pollinate or must cross pollinate, what would happen if we do both, meaning rob some of its own and some of another , would that work? of it must one or another self/ cross?
Where do I buy pollen? I have a red meat dragonfruit and it’s small, but I am taking care of it thanks to your videos. My plant had rust spots and the alcohol mixture from your videos did the trick👌🏻‼️ I am not sure once it blooms if it will pollenate itself, I just want to play it safe. I’ve learned so much from you ‼️I feel confident, so excited to have my red meat. My kids love it and can’t wait to build the stand for it!
Thank you for this video. From another of your videos, I also know you can save that pollen. Now I can see how it's done. So my question is ... I have several "unknown" plants that I've rooted and just potted up. Two of them I bought and the rest were from given to me. I think it may be two varieties - American beauty and Halley's comet, but .. no idea. So there are 8 plantings, but none of them are marked and no way for me to know at this time. Is there going to be a way to identify a) what is the variety b) is it self-pollinator or self-sterile when they bloom or by looking at the branches? Thanks!
Hi sir... Can i ask you something... Where do i keep the collected pollen? In the freezer or only in th refrigirator at the chiller area? How Many days that i can store the pollen?.. Thanks
You're very welcome Lan! Sugar Dragon is a great variety to have because their fruits are super sweet and their pollen also works on all dragon fruit varieties. :)
I'm late to the party but have been enjoying the videos. I wanted to ask: the DF plants that need to be pollinated, can you collect & use their pollen on another variety? Or is it safer to collect from the self-pollinates? Do you notice a difference in the hybrid vs reg regards to requiring pollination?
James, I don't plan on using it because its pollinated with vietnam white. I would be interested if I had sugar dragon pollen. That would be an interesting hybrid to me. :)
Want to ask you about the varaity of dragon fruit which is not accept the polenation from its polen Does any type of dragon fruit not accept any polinator..I mean not sutable to pear fruit?
Do you pollinate at night? I do mine late evening usually abut 730 pm. Will that work? Also how many times do I have to pollinate the same flower? I have about 15 flowering at the same time. 🙏thank you

You mention that sometimes it does not accept it’s own pollen. How can I find out which type it is to get another type to cross pollinate?
You're very welcome! If you cross-pollinate the seedlings from the fruit will be different color. Half of those seeds would be pink and white flesh dragon fruits. :)
What options do I have since mine only gave me 1 and it flowered last night but noticed that there’s a few more growing and those haven’t flowered yet. Just one.. can it still fruit ???
@@GraftingDragonFruit She does a good job of holding still and keeping quiet and focusing / zooming on the right things at the right time. Richard I have a question ! I went to another town and got some pollen for a unknown variety that i have and how long can i keep it the pollen in bowl because flowers are opening every day ?
Hi Richard. I just discovered this video. I have some type of red DF that has been giving flowers for years but always fell off without giving fruit. Now it has 3 flowers that are about to bloom, but I don't have any more flowers from the white DF to collect the pollen to cross pollinate. So sad...

Bcz it's first time pollinating with frozen pollen so I wasn't sure if the frozen pollen was going to work . Will that be a problem ? This was my second dragon flower in my garden .

Hi Bryan, the natural pollinators at night are moths and bats. In the morning time if the bees come early enough they will also pollinate the dragon fruits. :)
Hello Richard. I have an American beauty that I have a problem with. The flowers are falling off. Do I need to cross pollinate the American beauty? I thought it could except it on pollen. I am at a loss because I have lost at least 14 flowers that have come off.
Hi Michelle, AB is a self fertile variety. It should fruit with its own pollen. If they are turning yellow and falling, this means it’s not a true American Beauty. I would suggest to start cross-pollinating it to get the fruits to set. Use any other variety of dragon fruit pollen you have growing.
@@GraftingDragonFruit We have also had a lot of rain here in Florida. I think I might want to try to cover them with plastic for a few days to see if I can get some fruit. I have another flower getting bigger. I haven’t given up yet.
Can you use pollen from any variety to pollinate any variety? Are they universal except with themselves? I just got 6 varietys ( orejona, golden yellow, cebra, Coney mayer, Florida sweet) but don't have Vietnam. Also are any of mine self pollinating off the top of your head? Do all have to be cross pollinated?
I have two plants. They flower one at a time. So cross-pollination is not possible. Is it possible to collect pollens and store in the fridge for later use, say in a few weeks' time?
Hi C T, yes I am located in the Orange County, SoCal. I will have cuttings available in Spring time. I am currently out of stock now. Thank you. Check with me again at that time.
That is one of the main reason why dragon fruit can’t produce fruit and fall off. The pollen is not working and you need to have another dragon fruit variety to mix the pollen to cross pollinate.
When you cross pollinating 2 different variety. What will happening to the future fruit. Would the fruit look different than mother plant ? Does the variety of the dragon fruit on the market that we see came from cross pollination.
