talent is essentially being gifted at the game immediately, and doing really well even if you're not very experienced. genetics fall into that same category, as having good genetics can make you talented at a game you never really played. what separates players like whitecat, rafis, cookiezi, and vaxei from an average player who may have gotten into the game and immediately started passing high difficulty maps but hasn't seen much improvement is work ethic. those 4 players have capitalized off their potential, and used it to become the best by playing a lot and trying to improve everyday. basically, hard work beats talent, until the talented works hard.
"You can call it genetics. I refuse to believe that it's genetics. He trained hard for this" -Ed "BTMC" 2020 (while watching xeltol's ascencion to heaven dt fc)
Genetics play a role no doubt. That’s pretty self explanatory in itself. As for talent, that’s efficiency+lifestyle+habits+cognitive awareness and mental in general. As for mindset, a lot of top players are built differently physically and mentally (like mindset). Negative mindset is pretty natural and that’s a whole rabbit whole. There is also teenage angst definitely has to do with it too lol. Let’s be real, most osu players are straight up kids I’m convinced.
What I think you mean, isn't really "Talent" but more so them being prodigies, a prodigy is someone who is very naturally smart or good at something, they still have to put in effort they just pick it up way faster.
Every time I improve slowly it is only because i get demotivated which leads me to playing less, when i get motivated again and play more i improve, top players are there because they play through their demotivation...
I agree with the essence of what you've said, but I'd just like to tell my point of view. I would say that I'm at least of average talent (haha so cocky), which is absolutely enough to become an incredible player with enough hard work. BUT I would also say I am definitely held back by genetics. I have a movement disorder which makes it very hard to control my muscles well. I have to constantly fight against an uncontrollable shake, and I'm always tense (if I don't tense I shake even more and move much slower). I truly believe that it is because of this disorder that I haven't been able to improve my finger speed even a little bit after half a year of constant training (stuck at 150bpm lmao). I'm definitely not going to give up or falter, but in my own personal experience, genetics has had a big impact on how I've played. I don't follow the osu community very closely, so I'm not knowledgeable on how they view this topic, but from what you've said in the video I definitely agree with you more than "my genetics makes me unable to stream 200bpm" even when they are a completely average and healthy person, it's not like they have an actual medical condition holding them back. I just think this topic is a bit more nuanced than people think. There's the small genetic stuff, like how much fast twitch muscle you have, which would NOT hold you back from being an amazing player, and then there's the big genetic stuff, like neurological disorders, which will hold you back depending on the severity
Everyone has a limit to the bpm they can stream in osu. They can't go beyond that bpm no matter how hard they tried. Some people are just naturally gifted to be able to go faster than others like merami, but it is a fact that everyone is capable of improving the speed that they can stream just through hard work, albeit only to their limit. Hence, I am saying that no one has reached their true limit but players who have had a good amount of time spent in this game would most definitely be close to their limits on pure clicking speed.
I guess top players like vaxei or whitecat are actually a combination of both. This exact thing also applies to traditional sports. Of course LeBron was not born to put a basket into a hoop while following specifics rules on how to do so, but a combination of being an absolute freak of nature as an athlete (genetics) and his incredible hard work when it comes to getting better as a basketball player (dedication, thus creating talent) was just abnormal, and that same combination was perfect for the game of basketball. Same for osu!. Vaxei is just naturally good at the game, with some genetics helping, plus the insane dedication he had made him perfect for being at good at osu! and improve at an insane rate to become the legend that he is right now, same for whitecat.

Genetics is 100% a thing, but still that isn't the problem you suck in osu, genetics is a thing in almost everything. Even if you just say "you just have dont have to give up and play alot", that's also genetics, some people are more patient than others, and some people improve faster. The problem for me is that I have been working at speed for a number of months now and I can only make it up to 230 bpm for about 10 - 15 seconds. My friend however putting no conscious effort into practicing speed can nearly stream 300 bpm. Genetics and talent are not necessarily the same thing. Talent is (for the most part) based on previous experience (genetics being a factor). Genetics is physical limitations. Genetics and talent can coexist, but they are not the same thing.
Here's a simple rule. I studied music and every PHd in this field says the same thing, no matter who you ask: Talent makes someone who practiced an instrument for 500 hours play like someone who practiced for about 1000-2000 hours, but then everyone hits a barrier. To truly master an instrument everyone needs to play his instrument for about 7000 hours. And yes, this should be the same for Osu.
i'd say the only thing that genetics play a huge role in is streaming. everyone can get to the point of streaming 240 bpm consistently, but not like how merami does it.
For me genetics is like something that determines how you would look and how good you will be on something like for example peaople born with high musical talent we can take a youtube named MarcusVeltri as a person born with good genetics Being born with extremely good genetics doesn’t instantly mean you’re going to be super talented unless you have one of those "perfect genes" that you usually see in anime or mangas like blood line or something I can say that if looks don’t matter then what determines you’re difference is talent Ps. I don’t really know what im talking about now Whitecat probably has good genetics at finger movement and reading And he has good talent at dt Merami has good genetics about finger movement/strength and has talent on reading This is just my personal opinion if you want to comment go ahead.
At least to me, I think talent means being able to find a shorter path towards the solution of the problem (which is improvement in this case) more easily than an average person. If you’re talented at something, you pick it up easier than someone else because you’re naturally taking a shorter path than them towards the goal. I believe talent can be trained as well. You can carve a shorter path on your own with experience at something. In a way, talent is being able to improve faster at improving than others are improving. So there is talent behind talent. And talent behind that. My head hurts.
I feel bad for people that see a 1000pp play and just quit, I watch meramis 3 mod ascension to heaven FC and I immediately tried to 3 mod a hard map for me and I passed.
as an asian i feel like a lot of people just see the skill you earn by grinding your ass off to get there and not the insane amount of effort you have to put in behind the scenes for months on end. that in turn kinda hurts cause i feel like people just put your skill that you earned up to nothing but genetics, and i liked the point you brought up about the mindset thing about that because if you hear it enough, you'll eventually tell yourself everything you trained for was genetic, thank you so much for this super articulate video on this subject; it was by far the most interesting one i've watched (y)
It's also random, if you start playing the game and get a lot of bad habbits, it will be hard to get rid of them, but if you don't get as much habits it will carry on to make you improve faster.
I mean, I can stream 220 and do 240 for a little bit, but I started out being intimidated by anything faster than 180 bpm. But then, I decided I wanted to be able to play faster maps too, so I spent a week playing nothing slower than 200 bpm, and now I am where I am. I've started stream practice again, and I'm hoping to gain 240 consistency.
Do you think having a musical background would help with something like osu? A bunch of patterns can be boiled down into music terms and can be easily digested, understood, and executed. As someone who took music before getting into the game, improvement was easier for me because I understood what was going on rhythmically and could apply it to the game. What do you think of that?
@@MrFranci3000_dot_AMAROXXX Yeah but that's just the general point of the game. It might help to have a deeper understanding of *why* the things happening in the song are happening.
@@TheLil3K osu is a reaction game mostly, you could play with music off if you wanted and get good scores. Music just helps with accuracy and associating certain parts of the maps to certain parts of the song
I feel like much can achieved with hard work... But I dont think that there are no genetics... But there is some but only at the highest Level... If someone is able to burst or stream some high bpm with hard work and the next one is trying his Best to play high bpm stream and burst maps but just cant reach that läßt bit of speed it is genetics... But that is no excuse for myself that I am Bad. I just dont put in the work to reach my human Limits in osu. And if you dont put in the work you cant blame anything or anyone but yourself.
I'm scared that if I don't improve fast enough I'll slow down from age faster than I improve from practice, meaning I'll get worse no matter how much I try.
Genetics and to a big extent even talent is a pathetic excuse for lack of skill gain. The by far biggest aspect of getting better at the game is lots of constant playtime. It doesn't take much to see this correlation between playtime and skill on basically every top player profile. And really, what most people call talent in Osu is just previous aiming or rhythm game experience. Things which merely make skill gain at the start for some easier. Things you can easily overcome, if you would just break the at least 2000 play threshold monthly
Even if people are gifted genetics, they still need to put in work to get better and improve just like others. Having genetics is not a one-way ticket to becoming top 5 when you install the game.
i think your speed cap is genetics but you still need skill to reach said speed cap. Regardless rhythm games most of the time arent only about speed but about alot of other things too which doesnt make good hand genetics have the biggest impact on anything (unless your speed cap is extremely low)
I'm seeing the trend. In the future, players can probably buy genetics but not for themselves but for their offspring. Boom newly born infant streams 420 bpm
I don't believe your use of the terms "talent" and "genetics" were wrong at all in the BruhmasterL video. Us americans have a tendency to think that freedom of speech means we are always right... really it just means we get to show everyone how wrong we can be :) Genetics is a scientific thing. Talent is a psychological (or maybe philosophical?) thing. They may talk about the same thing, but they're from completely different perspectives, so saying they're different makes a lot of sense. Still, nice to see you can respect people's opinions, and not assume that you are right and they are wrong. Keep up the good content!
What I don't get though is how could somebody who hasn't played the game for well over 2 years when I first played with him be able to do 200 BPM long streams and hold them for half a minute while I could barely do 120 BPM after he hasn't played FOR YEARS and NEVER practiced streaming to begin with. The dude only casually played the game back then and quit after a month or so and i still can't do even 40% of what he can do now despite him not touching the game in a long long time, if he can casually stream and overstream BPMs around 200-220 then honestly how is that not genetics? He is literally playing every game he's playing casually, so there's not really something that's helping him keep that skill around. I'll be darned if it's just an excuse for me not being able to be a speed player but honestly fuck off, i'm jealous, that has to be genetics.
you are correct, it is genetics. its called the twitch muscle. an average person can train up to like 240 bpm consistently, but no waay can they get to the level of merami who streams like 300 bpm.
I’m gonna time travel to 800bc to make sure my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great greatgreat great great great great great great great great great grandfather marries a woman that can stream at 500 bpm so I can have better genetics
Personally when I say genetics I don't mean that the player didn't have to put effort into improving, but that they had to put less time than average to learn a skill, not that they were "born" with that skill
this comment is false, some people are born with better finger twitch muscles than others. there is a bpm barrier for how fast you can stream, and that barrier is determined by genetics. although a lot of people think the barrier is quite low when its probably around 240 bpm.
Wouldn't this mean that genetics and talent are the same thing though? In the end its something that's not dependent of you, it just works in a different way. I think it's wrong to blame external factors from the start even if they may exist.
Me and a friend of mine started playing osu! (for the first time) together at the same time about 3 weeks ago. We have almost the same amount of play time and usually play online together when we're playing. Around 20 hours of total play time. The thing is I'm passing 5 star maps with an A and my global rank is almost 500K. But he's barely able to pass 3.5 star songs at all and his global rank is still in the 7 digits.
but reaction time, muscle strength is literally genetics. It's been proven in studies that Africans have certain differences in amounts of muscle fibers that allow them to run faster. Sure there's no studies on muscle fibers in osu players hands, but do you really think some people aren't born with more stable, more nimble, more agile hands? Also reaction time is obviously genetic, while you can improve it, some people are just inherently faster at reacting.

I saw a quote from hajime no ippo stating that even if you have talent, if you can’t reach number one then it’s all pointless
Or maybe, now get this, it's some combination of the three? Idk maybe I'm crazy
I think only thing that's "genetics" is good rhythm, but even that can be improved
I feel bad for people that see a 1000pp play and just quit, I watch meramis 3 mod ascension to heaven FC and I immediately tried to 3 mod a hard map for me and I passed.
nf with 1%acc))
@@loka8001 it was a 119pp play on a 4 star, I'm #300000 so I'm not that good
still amazed i cant hear the standing fan behind him
as an asian i feel like a lot of people just see the skill you earn by grinding your ass off to get there and not the insane amount of effort you have to put in behind the scenes for months on end. that in turn kinda hurts cause i feel like people just put your skill that you earned up to nothing but genetics, and i liked the point you brought up about the mindset thing about that because if you hear it enough, you'll eventually tell yourself everything you trained for was genetic, thank you so much for this super articulate video on this subject; it was by far the most interesting one i've watched (y)
And cookiezi ! Who is cookiezi ! He is a god ! He is borne to a top player.
It's also random, if you start playing the game and get a lot of bad habbits, it will be hard to get rid of them, but if you don't get as much habits it will carry on to make you improve faster.
@@paulowastaken yea but not having them from the start helps
I mean, I can stream 220 and do 240 for a little bit, but I started out being intimidated by anything faster than 180 bpm. But then, I decided I wanted to be able to play faster maps too, so I spent a week playing nothing slower than 200 bpm, and now I am where I am. I've started stream practice again, and I'm hoping to gain 240 consistency.
The word you're looking for is stamina
@@kodycore Well, you do need both, but you make a good point.
Not really, just listening to music and paying attention to what you listen will be enough
I started playing osu in may but I still beat my friend who's been playing since 2017 to a 5 star pass so ig I got good genetics
Anyone can be a top player BUT some will take alot longer than others because sometimes some people just learn faster than others
I'm scared that if I don't improve fast enough I'll slow down from age faster than I improve from practice, meaning I'll get worse no matter how much I try.
My new fellow countryman favourite youtuber
Genetics and to a big extent even talent is a pathetic excuse for lack of skill gain. The by far biggest aspect of getting better at the game is lots of constant playtime. It doesn't take much to see this correlation between playtime and skill on basically every top player profile. And really, what most people call talent in Osu is just previous aiming or rhythm game experience. Things which merely make skill gain at the start for some easier. Things you can easily overcome, if you would just break the at least 2000 play threshold monthly
Even if people are gifted genetics, they still need to put in work to get better and improve just like others. Having genetics is not a one-way ticket to becoming top 5 when you install the game.
osu is one of the hardest games ever
i think your speed cap is genetics but you still need skill to reach said speed cap. Regardless rhythm games most of the time arent only about speed but about alot of other things too which doesnt make good hand genetics have the biggest impact on anything (unless your speed cap is extremely low)
technique
imagine a guy with genetics talking about genetics
Sht I can't study look like I need to change my genetics
you can have fun at the game even if you are bad
Man, i don't care about genetics, Skill is skill
Wait there is talent in Overwatch?!?!? OSUHOW
Nice video
Watching your video sideways still looks normal
the best thing to do is enjoy the game
i dont know but, i did train high bpm streams speed and stamina, singletap high bpm, can do screen jump. Doesn't anyone can do that too?
I'm seeing the trend. In the future, players can probably buy genetics but not for themselves but for their offspring. Boom newly born infant streams 420 bpm
Haha my Asian genetics go brbrbr
This is why u should get married with an osu player guys so ur child could stream 420bpm
I can't ss dash hopes 1.3x version HD DT because of my parents
I hate genetics now
I don't believe your use of the terms "talent" and "genetics" were wrong at all in the BruhmasterL video. Us americans have a tendency to think that freedom of speech means we are always right... really it just means we get to show everyone how wrong we can be :)
Genetics is a scientific thing.
I haven't seen a single instance where freedom of speech could be described that way lol.
@@boneronosu3882 Ye, kinda hard to say what I'm trying to say. My whole point is that a lot of people saying the same thing doesn't make them right.
@@ethancannoy that I can definitely agree on
I get kinda irritated when people say it's all genetics, cos it goes against all the time I've spent trying to improve
Theres a forum post related to to this but my comment got flagged as spam so i guess i cant link it
What I don't get though is how could somebody who hasn't played the game for well over 2 years when I first played with him be able to do 200 BPM long streams and hold them for half a minute while I could barely do 120 BPM after he hasn't played FOR YEARS and NEVER practiced streaming to begin with.
I just cant do burst yet once i can im sure i can do 6 stars finnaly maybe more
I’m gonna time travel to 800bc to make sure my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great greatgreat great great great great great great great great great grandfather marries a woman that can stream at 500 bpm so I can have better genetics
imo speed is the only genetics related skill cuz some people can tap crazy fast i know that dont even play osu
because people practice tapping fast outside of osu?????????
@@zurub no lol.
@@E333-m2g lol yes
i had my tablet for about 4 months now and still can't find a grip for my pen
Personally when I say genetics I don't mean that the player didn't have to put effort into improving, but that they had to put less time than average to learn a skill, not that they were "born" with that skill
this comment is false, some people are born with better finger twitch muscles than others. there is a bpm barrier for how fast you can stream, and that barrier is determined by genetics. although a lot of people think the barrier is quite low when its probably around 240 bpm.
How about genetics AND talent?
GENETICS ARENT THE REASON YOU HAVE 87% ACC
"Osu, is a music rythm game"
Sure...
It is though?
What u mean dude, it is a rhythm game
yeah ok bait
@@eyesneveropen-meow-5125 dude I just saw you in how to Camellia vid an hour ago

Wouldn't this mean that genetics and talent are the same thing though? In the end its something that's not dependent of you, it just works in a different way. I think it's wrong to blame external factors from the start even if they may exist.
it is dependent on you lmfao
2:45 they’re both a thing
Me and a friend of mine started playing osu! (for the first time) together at the same time about 3 weeks ago. We have almost the same amount of play time and usually play online together when we're playing. Around 20 hours of total play time.
The thing is I'm passing 5 star maps with an A and my global rank is almost 500K. But he's barely able to pass 3.5 star songs at all and his global rank is still in the 7 digits.
your friend seems to be a bit dumber than you when it comes to focus and improvement
Hearing you talk about vaxei after he basically quit the game makes me Sadge
I'm rank 17k on mania with a bad laptop don't need mechanical keyboard just a bad laptop
well mania has a lot less competition than std
This is bs I can’t fc freedom dive after only 1hr of playing
don’t have genetics and talent
but reaction time, muscle strength is literally genetics.
