- Most millenials cannot believe that Indie Sleaze is making a comeback, but how can it do better this time around? And is it worth reviving?

In my mind 2007-2010 indie sleaze is different than the remnants of what existed of it 2011-2013
oh goodness. me front row at a crystal castles concert with my blue american apparel hoodie and skinny jeans is now an aesthetic? lol im dead
You are now an icon!
Kele and Santigold really are legends in the black indie community 👏🏾
Enjoyed the video. I remember indie sleaze was endemic mainly to london/nyc and club scene culture. Subculturally there was also a '00 DIY house show scene (noise-rock, posthardcore, electro-rock, Spockmorgue, 31G or the faint/hothotheat-sounding bands, or in UK Artrocker Magazine/Brighton's 20jazzfunkgreats blog) of 70s thrift, ironic T's, white belts, stripes, spock haircuts, myspace music. Electroclash straddled the two scenes with connate garb. There's been no real analysis or revival of the latter maybe because it was too underground.
Oh man I was at Artrocker night at the buffalo bar nearly every Tuesday or White Heat at madame jojos for a live music fix, then my fix of electroclash at ‘ Trash’ club on a Monday, always Smash and grab (queens of noize gals) on a Wednesday. How I managed to hold down a fulltime job too I don’t know. Oh wait I worked in a record shop.
love this, miss this era and I’m happy for the CSS mention
Thank you! I saw them perform in Nottingham as a support act for Justice. Such a good night, so much glitter and eyeliner...
Indie Sleaze? Is that what it was called? My mum just said I looked homeless person. Although I still have my skinny jeans from back then. I also still have my American Apparel(unfortunately I did buy from them) roller skater/disco shorts(use them for bed), too many skaters skirts, and rainbow of colours tights. Still sporting my Zooey Deschanel inspired fringe cut. I flipped flop between this style and a Blair Waldorf style cause I love tights. I still kind of love both styles but dressed more tone down now, my mum is happy.
Still love the music more than anything and actually my five year old loves listening to it as well.
Another sleazy photographer who work I hope not to see with the resurgence of the ascetic is Terry Richardson. A real Sleazy Ball!
But another top notch video. Thank you for reminding me of my Uni & early 20’s. Going to watch some OG Skins episode.
Skater skirts and tights were the perfect middle ground between the indie sleaze and Blair Waldorf look! I've never stopped loving the music, how cool that your 5 year old likes it too! Thanks for watching Lily! 💖
I was involved with the 2000s indie scene and fishnets and heels were as common as ballet pumps on girls. Suits and blazers were common on boys. It should be pointed out that bands incorporating reggae or camp disco were doing exactly the same thing as post punk bands of the late seventies and early eighties.
I think ‘Indie Sleaze’ nicely packages and labels the style of the time. Yes ‘chav’, ‘preppy’ and ‘emo’ could be used to describe certain cultures or fashion but they all fell into ‘indie sleaze’ at some point.
Indie Sleaze was also bigger than just music and fashion, it was television (Skins, Inbetweeners, Sugar Rush) it was reflected in reality TV (Big Brother, Shipwrecked) and celebs and tv personalities.
It was the last hurrah for an oppositional, confrontational and hostile youth culture, along with emo and scene.
your take as someone who was “on ground zero” when the scene was in its heyday is so valuable! both the namedrops of lesser know artists and the fact that a lot of the culture vultures that cultivated imagery from that time were total creeps
Can’t believe how we dressed when I was a teen is already being repackaged as indie sleaze. I’m only 26 and honestly don’t feel like much has changed
The trend cycles are getting faster and faster, but it just means if we hold on to what we love, it'll be back in fashion before too long.
Really?? I'm 25 and I feel like it's hella different. Like, the kids/teens get all their stuff from solely tiktok it seems. for us, tumblr-insta- and even still myspace for our elementary days if you were allowed on there. i feel like 24-27 yr olds are that weird zillenial bunch so its weird. but, I feel like the eras we experienced and how long & the way we consumed them were vastly different to those 18 and under. it feels soo different the fashion, just everything imo.
This was a really interesting retrospective, thank you. Although I kind of hated this scene at the time (especially the music, and the pretentiousness), I do kind of miss some aspects of it now, because nostalgia.
I do hope bright colours in clothing make a comeback! Everything has been so dreary for so long
Indie Sleaze fits in nicely with the idea of Dopamine Dressing and bright colours, so maybe it'll be bye bye to neutrals before we know it!
gen z is obsessed with labeling EVERYTHING and EVERYONE
'old loser in brooklyn' lmao
if they TRY to make Skins have a comeback I will riot.
Skins was my guilty pleasure, but I don't think it could ever work in 2022.
I think it is. I was watching it last year and people were making tiktoks of it, I was really surprised. It’s so crazy the older trends are being recycled.
I miss these days. I was only 13-15 when i used to dress like this.
I love indie sleaze but I don’t think it’s going too come back %100 I think some aspects of it will come back like bits and pieces because I wanna say some of it was very beautiful but it was fun being a hot messy lol
Agreed, it won't be a copy paste. I think the best bits will be cherry picked. I want to see metallic leggings and eyeliner make a huge comeback!
I love this video! I wanted to be like Tahita from NYPC back in '07 and very nearly shaved the side of my head. 😂
Really enjoyed your thoughtful commentary on this sub culture and appreciate you abstaining from recirculating images of abuse.
Thank you! 🌹
I missed that messyness
Right!? Who wants polish when you can have chaos.
There were about seven years in the 2010’s where I could not stand fashion. I loves the 2010 does the early 90’s look
the excitement of y2k was quelled by disaster making the shift to the more materialistic celebrity worshipping decadence of mcbling. once the recession hit, we realized the new technological world wasn't what they promised, and got nostalgic for seemingly the first time, hence the emergence of indie sleaze
Absolutely love this!
Thanks for watching lovely 💙
Yay!!! Love this vid
Thank you Martha 💙
Please make more videos like this! So cool
So when they weren't asked about identity it was a problem and when they were asked it was a problem.
Amazing video thank you x
Thanks very much for watching! Hoping to have a new one up today or tomorrow about Indie Sleaze's partner in crime...
All's Im thinking is 2010 ke$ha

Being 9 years old specifically
Werewolves
Taylor Swift
Jeffree Star
Honey
Please agree
Haha, the ones that I know (ke$ha, Jeffree Star) I agree with. I think Taylor Swift was more Indie Twee (I made another video on this). Werewolves, because Twilight? Definitely t-shirts and hoodies with fantasy illustration animals like dolphins, wolves, unicorns etc 😅
I don’t like Jeffree Star’s connections to Dahvie Vanity.
whoops, I never stopped. teehee 🎉
club nme derby ? like the city derby ?
We have Euphoria to thank.
This makes a lot of sense.
Euphoria isn’t really indie sleaze lol I feel like it’s more precise and put together for aesthetic choices that are more early 2000s possibly late 90s but don’t see any indie stuff
Lol, indie sleaze is literally a subset of the early y2k aesthetic. You see it particularly with Jules and Rue. The silhouettes of Jules outfits are very AA, then the glitter and smudgy shadows on a natural looking face. Very much indie sleaze. Same with Rue’s makeup, natural face with smudgy glitter shadows. Maddy and Cassie lean more 90s, especially Maddie.
@@alexish8183 no the early y2k is literally Mcbling…. Pinks, diamonds, pop…. The complete opposite of indie sleaze lol. Indie was counter culture to what the early 2000s were about. I was in highschool during it and it was nothing like euphoria lol more like skins…..
@@nicoliva2327 very early 2000s yes, but by 2011 I was in college and we got really into 80s and 90s vintage looks and it eventually sort of became what I’m hearing people refer to as indie sleaze. It’s okay if you disagree. I’m really not trying to convince you and I’m not interested in continuing the discussion.
Woke narratives spoiled the video
Saying “indie sleaze”, “edm” and “people of color” is cringe
Dying over the use of Long Blondes clips 😸
