I was listening to this non stop in my 20's. I have had the honor of crossing Mr. Cohen on a cold November morning on Ste-Catherine st. in Montreal. I didn't want to bother him so I just nodded and he nodded back and it was grandiose.

The take-off point for this song is from what is arguably the most solemn part of the Yom Kippur service, which asks the question in many different ways, “Who will still around by this time next year?” Who will prosper, who will be brought low, who live and who will die? Then of those who are signed and sealed in the Book of Life to die, how will it happen? “Who by fire, and who by water? Who by sword and, and who by beast? Who by hunger, who by thirst, etc.?” It’s fascinating to see how he takes it from there. Leonard Cohen wasn’t observant, but he was deeply rooted in the Jewish tradition.

@@MCMTL then you should know that the only thing the two have in common is that both are part of the Yom Kippur service. Kol Nidrei is the declaration that the cantor recites to begin the Yom Kippur service at night. It is basically a call to allow those who are sinners to pray with those who are righteous. It then declares that any unrequited vows that were made in the last year should be nullified. Unetaneh Tokef is a prosaic prayer that the cantor recites before the Kedushah prayer every Amidah. It begins by narrating what happens up in heaven as God is passing judgement on all of earth. It then ends with a poem about how on Rosh Hashana God writes down how our year will be, and on Yom Kippur he seals it; this is the part of the prayer that “Who By Fire” is based on. Gahttdamn this song is powerful and crazy weird beautiful
It's based on a prayer from the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur service, U'netaneh Tokef. It starts with the statement of the divine decree that seals the fate of each of us for the next year, who will live and who will die. It ends on a note of hope, that a harsh fate can be averted by prayer, right behavior, and repentance (turning back is a better translation). The imagery is powerful, and some consider it the pinnacle of the service. Cohen heard it many times growing up in Montreal's Jewish community.
The key to the song, however, is Cohen's visit to Israel during the 1973 war (the year before this album was released), which began when Egypt and Syria attacked on the afternoon of Yom Kippur. He traveled very near the front line and performed almost every day for the Israeli troops, during a war that started out as a near-catastrophe for Israel. It ended three weeks later in victory, but not without terrible losses. What he saw of the fighting and aftermath shook Cohen to his core. "Lover, Lover, Lover" directly came from that experience, but it echoed through other songs he wrote later.

Cine nu-i secerat de raze de soare
Cine se trece prin noapte,
Cine-şi depăşeşte încercările
Şi lună de lună zâmbeşte
Chiar dacă totul se dărâmă în el
Şi sufletu-i putrezeşte
Cum l-aş putea numi?
Cine are tăria
De a se sinucide
Cine trăieşte-n iubirea duşilor
Şi-n ei se regăseşte pe sine
Cine nu-i ucis de lavine
