As someone who’s played both for far too much time, I have to give it to 2004. The original, physics-based swinging is still the fastest, best, most realistic, and most innovative swinging in any video game. The 2023 Spidey 2 has more to customize, so it gets points for that. But even after playing with Swing Assist at 0, I have to admit, it still does some pretty forgiving things to make the style automatic. In 2004, if you were good at swinging, you were GOOD at swinging. I’ve also completed the Mega Time for some of the Insane challenges in the 2004 Spidey 2, and I promise you… absolutely NOTHING was that difficult in 2023 Spidey 2. Also… there’s somehow more to do in the original too. Pizza missions, saving kids’ balloons, Daily Bugle photography missions, races, boss battle challenges, and so much more. I’m sure they’ll add things with updates, but as of now, the original Spidey 2 has more to do when you beat the story. Oh yeah… and the story is probably a lot better in the 2004 game too.

@@SmoothGuy2 Unfortunately, it's discontinued atm. I'm the only one who worked on this project 95%. I wanted more people to work on the project but everything goes wrong.

it was developed by treyarch (who make black ops) back when they made sports games, so they actually used the sports physics engine they had in house to develop this game, and its why its so visceral and real feeling, I loved insomniacs take but it doesnt have real physics, even though it really tries to make it look like it, insomniac confirmed its not running a physics engine for the swinging like treyarch did with this game.
Because marvel Spider-Man 2 doesn’t rely on physics for its web swinging. It uses a set of animations that gives an illusion that the player that it’s using one. That’s why the games sometimes feels like it’s swinging itself rather than you having much control over it

Best web swinging. The boost with left trigger was a smart touch let’s you add weight realistically. This is so open ended it’s a marvel and deserves more respect. Why they didnt go this way for ps4 I do not know but maybe they can in the future
The thing that the newest Spider Mans are missing with the web mechanics is wall detection. In the ps2 game you could actually get caught up on a wall if your momentum was wrong, or you'd runn along it if your distance was too close, you actually needed to develop a feel for the horizontal and vertical world. As good as the new games are with the web slinging, they still lack a refined horizontal mechanic, and even vertically isnt an issue either because even when you're above the building lines you can still easily get a full moment swing without dropping down in height by much at all and youbcan easily bounce or glide along walls as you pass by them as if they're made of bumpers. These are all the reaspns why the ps2 game still has a feel to it that is unmatched. I'd honestly almost rather they design the modern Spider Man games as more straight up action games with the old web slinging in the clouds design than try to do open world and miss the real fundamentals but I still really like what they've done with the franchise.
@@MrMckenzie.this is not at all what it is. The ZSA, while good and functional, is hardly as manual as it appears. It just restricts your lateral movement and lets you hit the ground. In some instances I’d argue it makes the web swinging worse because it just stiffens the experience in the wrong way. Technically it gives you a better “pendulum” but it’s still smoke and mirrors. The core system holds your hand and automates almost everything, making it far less satisfying.
One of the biggest issues with insomniacs swinging isn’t necessarily the speed but the weight of the character feels like a feather like there’s no pendulum or transfer of momentum in between webs. This game feels like a man holding onto a web while the others feel like they’re floating. They should’ve made a new game engine for Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man 2 is on a new game engine if I’m not mistaken. Plus you can tone down how much the game assists you in swinging. It starts off at 10 which is what the other games was at originally and you can bring it down to 0
I'm really glad to say that Spider-Man 2 has absolutely fixed the issues with the first game's swinging. You can even turn the "safety assists" off and take impact damage. It's amazing.
new spiderman games aint got shit on this game when it comes to swinging and the vibe i got with the music it was crazy took me back to when i was 4 years spazing the fuck out with tobey maguire spiderman i really wish i could go back man
Yep. People thinking the newer games have better swinging don't understand physics. In the newer games he don't gain momentum the right way and suddenly lose momentum for no reason all the time. Feels completely off. It's supposed to feel like 80kg on a rope that's also able to maneuver his movements with super human strength, not bend space and time.
Honestly, the swinging in this 20 year old game still feels better and more nuanced than sm2 ps5. This one you can feel the speed as you swing through the more speed upgrades you got. And has more variety of air tricks.
Love how rewarding swinging in this game feels. It's a skill you learn as you play and it's really the most accurate and realistic swinging considering it's based heavily on actual physics. The extra situational inputs necessary to keep a good smooth flow bring so much more realism. You actually have to react to buildings and surrounding. Spiderman PS5 swinging just looks better but that's because they're doing most the work for you and you're mostly just watching.Theres not much room for error. The game constantly nudges you away from the errors you're making for the sake of making it look smooth but there should be consequences for hitting walls and signs. Its all part of learning to swing and its a fun challenge in this game. People think its better because they made it too easy so that it looks better. They dont realize its automated to the point you can just hold R2 and thats it to get where you want. Thats not nearly as fun as actually putting in the effort to learn swinging mechanics that force you to react and swing well.
Finally someone put my exact thoughts into words. If a Spider-Man game could combine all the best things about this, Web of Shadows, and PS5 swinging we’d have a system that people could probably not stop playing. As good as PS5 is, I yearn for the og experience that just feels right
Wish people stop comparing Insomniac's one cause they clearly didn't aim to bring the same idea of this one. Insomniac idea is primarly to have fun while looking cool swinging and flying through the city. While in 2004 is more to travel around the fastest you could get while holding your momentum.
Remember when Spider-Man games actually had a physics engine? Like, the web lines had collision and would bend or wrap around objects? This game came out in 2004, for fucks sake.
Spider-Man 2 for the ps5 got EXTREMELY close into beating this game when it introduced 0% Swing-Assist. The only problem it still has is that aggravating system that keeps cutting the players off from their web whenever they reach their highest arc. Hope that's taken care of in Spider-Man 3 becuase that's just annoying. But overall... 0% Swing Assist in Spider-Man 2 has almost the same physics as the original Spider-Man 2 for the ps2. Insomniac are listening.
I remember I used to think this game had the best web swinging ever, but years later Marvel Spider Man 1 from Insomniac came out and man it really improved on everything, and then Marvel Spider Man 2 came out and I cannot imagine it getting better than this If I were to ask one thing for Insomiac's Spider Man 3, it would be an option to allows us to choose what direction to shoot the web just like in this one, maybe as a setting like the swing assist disable
I don't really like how fast the web-swinging goes but what I love about the web-swinging here aside from the physics is that the buildings feels very tall and Spidey looks so small and I can really feel the height when free-falling. I don't know why I can't feel the height in Insomniac's game plus the buildings are so congested.
… grow up and remove your nostalgia🤣. Newest Spiderman games (even before the further improved Spiderman 2 on PS5) made for a MUCH more fun and fluid experience. This shit was great at the time but my god, maneuverability was terrible
@fionnbarrcasey5247 People really love striving for mediocrity now, huh? The insomniac web swinging is carried by the animations, and that's it. Looking at SM2 PS5, you are forced to let go of the web when web swinging and the loop de loop is lock as an upgrade, which negates any of the freedom you had from SM2 PS2. With swing assist at the minimum setting, instead of holding on to the web and running along it like in SM2 PS2, you are just forced on to the ground. Web wings can make web swinging completely obsolete considering you can fly through the whole map just with the web wings, requires minimal input, AND is measurably faster than swinging. Insomniac expects you to web swing the way THEY want you to, while Activision allowed more freedom and experimentation. Thats why people love PS2 so much and perfer the purely physics based web swinging and less of the automation insomniac gives. New ≠ better Stop meat riding mid traversal.
@@fionnbarrcasey5247 Fuck off. This is all subjective, you may feel like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 did a better job than this game did but you’re not everyone.
I think You used a mod. Dude, can you make a video about what you did to play this game on the computer? I think it would definitely be great to play the game in this form. 🙂
Spider-man 2 (2004) has the best out of the ones listed here. Only thing thats missing is the ability to climb webs like in ultimate and WOS, and i'd also like it if it had the animation where spidery face plants when he collides into a building, for realism
The air tricks in this game are so much better than the ones in insomniacs spider-man, More variety and i love how you have the option to stall them if you hold the X button

@NuggetMan420alt Oh well I like realism and less hand holding. Because of that, the swinging is more dynamic and can be more impressive when stunts and air tricks is pulled off. You know, you feel like you just swing that and not felt like it was artificial. Fun. ✌️

You already know new gens just going to screw it up and change the mechanics. And all the redditor's are going to eat that slop up 🤦. New gen is just woke garbage and the fact people are still making videos on this game says a lot about it, so no, please don't make a remaster
They'd probably make the models uglier too like the gta collection

I’ve maintained for 20 fucking years that this is in my top 5 game of all time.
I was an Xbox guy when ps4 spiderman came out a few years ago and I bought PS4 Pro just for that game. I loved it. New Spiderman is great.
But the magic of PS2 Spiderman 2 is unmatched. The swinging is just so fluid and intuitive. It never felt like the computer was course correcting my fuck ups like the new games.
Have you ever even **TRIED** 0% Swing-Assist on Spider-Man 2?
The god of our childhoods! This was the very first Spider-Man Game I've played when I was young and it was an absolute blast!
Then when I saw a Spider-Man 3 on DVD it changed my life forever and that's how I got into Spider-Man for Life
As someone who’s played both for far too much time, I have to give it to 2004.
This sums up my thoughts. I get so bored of swinging in SM2 (2023) but in SM2 (2004), I can swing for hours on end and never get tired of it.
The fact you gaslit yourself into believing reaching balloons and delivering fucking PIZZA is somehow engaging content explains a lot.
@@infamousplayer8772 it's engaging because the web swinging is. Insomniac's swinging feels like you're playing on autopilot most of the time so of course getting from point A to point B doesn't feel too engaging. But this game is pretty much entirely physics driven so it makes you pay more attention and asks for precise timing, reflexes, and coordination for you to get somewhere specific or do anything impressive or cool looking. For some people that appeals more. I appreciate the level of complete freedom it offers you, but I think this game is too difficult personally. And I think insomniac's is too easy and way too restrictive. For me web of shadows is the best balance

Still got the moves
This game was extraordinary and ahead of his time... Thanks for made my childhood better ❤
This game has something about the swinging that even Marvel's Spiderman 2 doesn't. It feels more physics based and more realistic in a way
it was developed by treyarch (who make black ops) back when they made sports games, so they actually used the sports physics engine they had in house to develop this game, and its why its so visceral and real feeling, I loved insomniacs take but it doesnt have real physics, even though it really tries to make it look like it, insomniac confirmed its not running a physics engine for the swinging like treyarch did with this game.
@@RiverDXR clearly. I never played this game but I'm thinking of getting it
Because marvel Spider-Man 2 doesn’t rely on physics for its web swinging. It uses a set of animations that gives an illusion that the player that it’s using one.

can you do a comparison of this and sm2 (2023) with web swinging assist turned off?
Wanted this since my very young childhood.
Best web swinging. The boost with left trigger was a smart touch let’s you add weight realistically. This is so open ended it’s a marvel and deserves more respect. Why they didnt go this way for ps4 I do not know but maybe they can in the future
what the hell bro, this is soo good for a 2004 game, and insomniac spiderman in 2022 are still late compared to this
The thing that the newest Spider Mans are missing with the web mechanics is wall detection.
I think insomniac is adding a no swing assistance mode where it will be more like this game
Not to say your wrong, they have something for like zipping automatically I’m between buildings and if you could please reiterate what you said first
they're doing exactly that with their web swing assistance lmao
@@MrMckenzie. I don't think you actually read my comment.
One of the reason why the swinging feels so good is because of the rappid ups and downs. And the weight behind it.
One of the biggest issues with insomniacs swinging isn’t necessarily the speed but the weight of the character feels like a feather like there’s no pendulum or transfer of momentum in between webs. This game feels like a man holding onto a web while the others feel like they’re floating. They should’ve made a new game engine for Spider-Man 2
there’s a physics based web swinging setting in the new game if you prefer that
Plus loopy loops
Spider-Man 2 is on a new game engine if I’m not mistaken. Plus you can tone down how much the game assists you in swinging. It starts off at 10 which is what the other games was at originally and you can bring it down to 0
I'm really glad to say that Spider-Man 2 has absolutely fixed the issues with the first game's swinging. You can even turn the "safety assists" off and take impact damage. It's amazing.
@@TNEQLkind of. At it’s core, I disagree, it’s not fixed. It’s better, but it’s not “there” yet.
new spiderman games aint got shit on this game when it comes to swinging and the vibe i got with the music it was crazy took me back to when i was 4 years spazing the fuck out with tobey maguire spiderman i really wish i could go back man
OMG this is amazing like our friend spidey 😮
Honestly, the swinging in this 20 year old game still feels better and more nuanced than sm2 ps5. This one you can feel the speed as you swing through the more speed upgrades you got. And has more variety of air tricks.
Stfu seriously you have no idea wtf you are talking about
@@Mr_Mb1You spent $70 on garbage, cope harder.

@@inkchariot6147 Crazy opinion.
The last point and the point about air tricks is straight up not true and most of this is personal opinion and not fact.
When i was a kid , i played this game mainly to web swing , doing missions for me was secondary, same with gta SA , i love open world games
I miss how zoomed out the field of view was. New games have the field of view way too close its headache inducing
The beautiful iconic music!!! ❤️🫡💪🙏🥲🔥🔥🔥💯

This shit was great at the time but my god, maneuverability was terrible
@fionnbarrcasey5247
People really love striving for mediocrity now, huh?
