Latin is so great! We are using a program called Picta Dicta from Roman Roads. It is AMAZING (coming from someone who knows Latin and could speak it semi-fluently) it goes from Latin to picture vs Latin to English so that kids learn to associate the Latin with the thing/concept itself rather than having to translate to English in their heads before comprehension. HIGHLY recommend it.

So excited for you to read "The Peace Child" ! His granddaughter is one of my dear friends and one of the first people I knew who I could see Jesus in. I attribute a lot of my faith to their family. I hope you enjoy the book !

Thank you so much for mentioning the homeschool discount on thriftbooks. I am signing up for that before I order anymore books. :)

I recently discovered some great resources I wouldn’t have otherwise encountered by checking out other items listed by homeschooling parents on eBay!!! It’s a source I hadn’t previously recognized! There are some expert level homeschooling parents who have years of experience and are finally selling some of their curriculum….so interesting to browse through these listing for ideas and inspiration!!! Thank you for your haul video! I love to live vicariously through haul videos haha!!!

Oh I ALWAYS love a homeschool resource haul! thanks for going through the details with us Jess! Question - are you adding a foreign language into your schedule this year?

I would LOVE to see how you are using Stories of Color to update your Ambleside choices.
I have considered using Ambleside but am overwhelmed by the thought of swapping out books.

One of the big ways is to use This Country of Ours edited and updated by Donna-Jean A. Breckenridge, who is a member of the AO advisory. The original is already scheduled, and the updated version by Breckenridge is on the list of SOC recommendations for US history. It’s very easy to use the updated version that eliminates racially charged language, uses appropriate tribal names instead of words like “savages,” provides pronunciation keys, and more. You just read the chapters as assigned for the original. I’ll also likely swap out some free reads to include more diverse titles.

I’ve been meaning to msg you on Instagram, but seeing your video pop up here reminded me! You definitely inspired me to buy “How to study literature like a professor for kids” and I’m excited to introduce it to my kids over the summer! 😊
YES one of the perks of homeschooling is getting to pick and choose what works best for us and our individual kiddos ❤

So exciting your moving to AO. It will be our first year with the CMEC next year, I’ll have a Form 1B and I’m definitely a little intimidated by the sheer volume of it all but I’m hoping to be able to wrap my arms around it enough this Summer and we’ll have a wonderful year. And, a humble request if you don’t mind, it would be awesome to get a bookshelf tour with maybe your top picks and must-haves. I’m drooling at those bookshelves behind you! 🤤

We did Writing and Rhetoric book 1&2 for my third grader this year. We really liked doing the first one every other week. When we moved to the second book, we did it every week (to fit it within the school year), and she got way too overwhelmed with it that way and burnt out on it. We're taking a break next year to do just Intermediate Language Lessons. We may circle back around to it the following year because it is well done. I think it's good you're doing it this year instead of last - parts of it are pretty advanced!

My older boy has done really well with Writing and Rhetoric the past 2 years and I'm thinking I may introduce it in fall for my rising 4th grader. I'm only on the fence because he's not a big fan of Writing, at least not yet. But maybe if we go slowly! I bet y'all will love it.

I’ve really appreciated reading the positive feedback from others who have used it. I think waiting for fourth grade was the right call, but I’m really excited about using it next year.

They have a link to apply, and you fill out the SheerID form it sends. Their customer service told me just to use my driver’s license for my school ID, and that worked.

I have contemplated using Writing & rhetoric for my rising 4th grader as well. But I’m not sure if it’s necessary.. 🙈 she will be doing Spelling wisdom and Using Language Well from Simply Charlotte Mason as her LA core.

I didn’t end up feeling like it was necessary for third grade, but I’m really looking forward to it for fourth grade. I figure the worst that can happen is I decide it’s too much/unnecessary and choose to drop it and save it for later. I like the structure of it though and how it’s laid out, and while I know formal writing isn’t necessary per CM, I think in today’s day and age and it can be very helpful.
