I'm a young electrician in the states and it's amazing how much people transfer CFL to LED. Those things are so expensive but so worth the money. Great vid!
If you can, try to provide a link to a printable picture, It will take a while but its a bit of fun :) Big thanks to you all. Ashley update is next vid :)
Typical LED is "cold white" which is usually somewhere between 5500-7000 kelvin. Similar to daylight or cloudy daylight for those 7000K, but now you can get LED that has about 2800-3000K which is "warm white". Slightly less "yellow" than typical light bulb, but only a little. For retrofitting your home living spaces go with those as they are less tireing and sort of relaxing, while cold white or "daylight" are best for workshops, garages, etc. In many offices about 4000K CFL are used which are quite neutral to our eyes in terms of color temperature, but I've never seen LED of that color.
I REALLY LOVE the educational videos Andy. I am by no means a sparky. But you make it perfectly acceptable to understand, as well as cutting through all the BS. Thank you SO much for these gems mate. They are GOLD.
Brilliant video. Glad I haven't bought any of those corn cob LED lamps. seen them on the ebay. LED lamps are still expensive in NZ. will need to shop around. With your power savings now there are more electrons available to blow shit up.
I have over 750 subscriptions on youtube. I've watched since 2006 hundreds of thousands of videos. This channel and Photonicinduction vids are the best and by far my favorites.
illuminating info here, the joke is the way some lights speak lumens and others watts. I have not seen those fancy LED GU10's, but I will keep am eye out for them Sadly many of the LED lights on the market have stupid low output yet are completely overpriced...it's a real dangerous market place unless you know what to look out for, and sure lots of these fancy LED's don't work too well as you show. know of any replacement for 500W work light bulb, 10.000 lumen of light, i'm yet to find a LED solution for them
I love LED bulbs, though I always go for the 3000K warm white when possible. The quality is disappointing on some, just like crappy CFL's that blow as soon as you turn them on. But so far I think my favorites for replacing normal light bulbs are the Philips Ambient.
i'd imagine with the less current draw, you can probably run your back-up supply alot longer and more efficiently. glad to see your making videos again, hope to see more soon!

ProminecraftianHD Phosphor type white LEDs can be more color balanced and not so blue (can come in warm and soft-white), but those cost a little bit more. All of the first ones on the market did have that problem though.
Another issue with the LED MR16 lamps is that electronic transformers actually put out about 30V peak in a spiky high frequency waveform. This is why it's better to run LED lamps from the little regulated 12V DC inline transformers. (But not so great for dimming)
I still use incandescents in places where the light is only used briefly... toilet, cupboards, stairs. Especially in winter, the slow start-up makes fluorescents useless in these places. I have yet to find LED equivalents that have a warm enough colour temperature. The hard white light (some are even slightly bluish) I find horrible in the home. Very uncomforting, makes the place look like a clinic or morgue.
I never knew they made LED versions of those tiny halogens,I've got a lamp that doesn't last a month before one of the three bulbs pop, cheers for showing us that
I work in the lighting maintenance industry and I'll say most places are going to LED lighting, a bit more expensive than HID lamps but really, much more efficient. I still like the big ol' mercury vapor ballasts over those electronic transformers. As always, great vid!
Ah, photon, photon, photon... You don't need a girly, no. For your mistress is electricity, and you serve her well, and although you do occasionally flirt with her cousin chaos, she turns a blind eye, because she knows, she's your one true love.
Great video!, i am becoming a bit partial to LED lighting, seen more than a few fail tho, dead arrays usually, and sooner than a incad or halogen bulb. most of my house is 2 foot fluro tubes, so i am going to have to find LED drop in tubes that do not pop after a few months.
They do make LED ~ Flourescent tube replacements which are supposed to last 23 years average life span but they still are quite pricey as of yet Govner
Hi Ed! I ONLY have LED illumination at home now. If you wanna change the old flourescent tubes with LEDs, there is a TRAP! Most of them do not have proper input filtering, which resuls in unusable FM-Radios in the area where you are using the tubes... But since we have Internet, I use the WDR2 mp3 stream instead. But I would loved to use my ancient old BLAUPUNKT FM-Radio (mono only) (WDR2 = German local radio station for state Nordrheinwestfahlen)
Good job on the LED education... just got my in-laws into watching you... You were one of the talking points at Christmas dinner. Anyways, keep up the good work!
Save a 1000 watts an hour? You growing weed or something? lol. I don't know anyone who ever used as much as 1000 watt of lighting power at any one time. Edit: Okay I see your house was mainly using halogen spotlights. No wonder your usage was so high lol
Omg... The laughs begin again! I thought those days were over. Why you aren't on TV I just don't know. Great one Photon! Thanks! Oh and yes, very informative vid indeed.
Personally i see the savings point of view, but i dont like that bright white light in color, its horrid its cold and not appealing!! you cant beat an incandecent light bulb for warm rich colour which is inviteing in the the home and very warming
Agreed -- they produce a sickly, "thin" quality of light. It's okay to spend a bit more on electricity in the home using the lovely, warm incandescent. There are other ways a city can save electricity without sacrificing the aesthetic of one's living space.
yes you are correct the leds do not see the color spectrom correctly for work and art not good. They have a way to go to develope it better. Maybe now its better but when I was working the leds had poor full spectrom color performance, it was easy to misread colors, when relying on color coded wires it was not safe but dangerous.
i hate LED's because the coluor temp is a Harsh white and halogen has a warmer coluor and is much better i go for looks not functionality for light bulbs
Yes you can get warm (or soft) white LEDs, but sometimes not warm enough. Plus, the dimmable ones are are much more efficient while being dimmed, but they don't get redder/warmer like the incandescent ones do,
Had to install a capacitor on a LED floodlight sensor the other day, fucking thing would strobe when you turned it off lol! facebook.com/photo.php?v=734918923187041&l=5393444580516667261
I loved your overveiw of LED bulbs, but as I tell many people looking to buy from E bay with delivery from China, u will get what you pay for and no chance to get your money back. I have spent 4 years in China visiting LED companies while developing a new PV + Thermal solar panel which provides power and heat. My latest GU10 COB x 5 watts with 400 lumens same size as the halogen with or without a dimmer application I am now selling for £3.50 each incl shiping in lots of ten The reason why the COB SMD lamps blew, was becouse the heat sink was not metal for that size of bulb. You did well, now I need to update those wanting to know whats happening today and what is around the corner
Great vid Photonic. I was gonna look into LEDs for room lighting... Good to see what's out there, and what works & what doesn't. Don't worry about the bird situation, there are some cool girls out there nowadays who love engineering and blowing stuff up!
Ha Ha.Thats a great vid.You sound like a great down to earth bloke.Ive done the same to my house, saved a fortune by buying from China on ebay too.I have subscribed so looking forward to further videos.
2:30 I do agree that the 5W led lights are great.. it's the best balance of power and light.. plus, most of those specific lights give out an all right quality light
Just came across your video, it's excellent. But WOW, you have a lot of lights in your house!! Bet you could've fried an egg on your roof when you had all those old incandescents lit up! LED technology is improving all the time and we have some brilliant LED replacement lamps on the market - remember, if you buy cheap £1 Chinese bulbs, you get what you pay for.
I am so glad LEDs are finally maturing, I have hated CFLs from the start and still do. I like warm, soft lights that can be dimmed, and I never found a CFL that could meet or exceed halogens in this respect. Fortunately, at least here in the US, there is a 60w equivalent LED on the market now that that truly is a replacement for incandescents/halogens, not a downgrade. The new Cree 60W bulbs are awesome.
Loving the vids Andy -- showed your Health and Safety one to my father and he was almost literally rolling on the floor laughing, he had tears rolling down his cheeks when you said about "Don't need to be seen from the f***ing moon in this thing" .... my family is originally from Essex, so we know the humour well! :) Looking forward to the next video!
Witching this made me realize I actually bought, very cheaply, a whole bunch of those cone shaped LEDs around the time this video was released, perhaps even earlier. The ones I've installed are still going, with some of them being on for 8+ hours a day, and I have at least 10 of them that are unopened.
My aunt replaced their halogen lights last year to similar 3W LED lamps and wow I was amazed! No comparsion to those old ones and color is 2900K, similar to halogen, so you don't get tired like with those 5000K plus ones!
I love hearing about your problems as they are very similar to mine, I now sit with my ferret (Dippy) to watch your show as my lady has also gone. All is good, another great video. Can you please put up a picture of my Ferret Dippy on your wall? Matt
haha good to see another video, glad to see that you are doing well and are happy, keep your head up :) good to hear that the leds are great too :) cant wait for more vids :)
i only changed to the new bulbs to save money myself, i was actually wondering how you felt about the new bulbs, but now i know! love the vids, hope ur m8 ash is well!
I understand about rectifiers being built in. will have to play with some. Have a play with some HIDs... as used in modern cars, about 4 times more efficient than halogen but not as good as LED. Keep making your videos, my wife also finds them funny, plus it makes her feel lucky that I am not as bad!
4 years later the technology has got way better on LEDs: got those corncob type things all around my house and they've been running for nearly 2 years now no problem :)
I swapped out my florescent lights in my garage for LEDs and after doing the math they'll pay for themselves in seven months and work so much better when it's cold. I bought some mini LEDs that look like a florescent and have magnets on the ends which are perfect for working underneath cars and recharge quickly.
you are proper bonkers, brilliant video as ever, made me laugh out loud at the end. Perhaps its worth doing a vid to explain to all those people 'in the dark' that the amount of light given off from led's has a different ratio to the watt rating when compared to convetional bulbs.
10:28 We can do wonderful things with light bulbs, watch this BAM! "uuh" and laughs as the bulb spreads into million pieces! lol love this dude. So reminds me of Dylan Moran. We want them both back with tens, hundreds and thousands videos.
I'd wager that the batteries in your home's power system will live a tad longer with the lighter power demand of the LEDs. Very cool! I hope the prices will come down more quickly for LEDs than they for CFLs. Who knows? Maybe they could even make them here instead of china!
Thanks for the video photon! I want to be in the photon lab wall too! But I need to take a good photo, everything I have is crap! Keep up these great vids!
There is nothing more satisfying than spending a few minutes with a variac and pile of old-school 5v CMOS logic boards from Esterline Angus chart recorders. Although tossing a fully charged 100,000uF 80V beer can over the cubicle wall when least expected runs a close second. Of course a 750V mercury lamp lighting transformer and a couple of copper rods will do to mitigate boredom if nothing else is available...
Dude....! This is some much useful info with some very funny humor you have just cheered up my Saturday morning.. Just Subscribed to your channel. Right i'm off to B&Q for some GU10's. Great video look forward to some more funny electrics..!

you can get colored led lights that have the same color as a normal bulb for the same price ya know.
they sell them at places like staples, office depot, home depot. not wallgreens dafuq.. who looks for variety at wallgreens
Do LED lights ever.... blow?
yes but normally only through some other type of failure such as overheating or internal connections eroding
+MrWubzHD Ahh so the actual bulb dosent go then? It only goes if the connection is bad?
I love LEDS ! ! ! They're getting better and better everyday! The color spectrum is so much better now as well. Thanks for sharing... DC.

I wonder how long the LED bulbs will work. Theoretically they should last for thousands of hours, but I'm interested how they do in practice.
I have plenty of LED bulbs that I got back in 2014 and still work perfectly

Man from the US talking here, HOW MANY FREAKING TYPES OF LIGHT SOCKETS ARE THERE IN EUROPE!!?! lol
I lived in the UK for several years, and this drove me nuts.
There's the Edison Screw (large and small) just like in the US, but there's also the Bayonet (large and small), and the Bi-Post and two-pin connectors (usually used for specialty lightbulbs and halogens).
That's just regular bulbs that fit into a socket of some kind. Never mind the fluorescent bulbs of various sizes and connectors.
I prefer the US, where we mostly just use the good old Edison screw.

I love hearing about your problems as they are very similar to mine, I now sit with my ferret (Dippy) to watch your show as my lady has also gone. All is good, another great video. Can you please put up a picture of my Ferret Dippy on your wall? Matt
The new vid intro = awsum. But so was the video too. FYI - I have yet to be disappointed, cheers mate, Jeff
haha good to see another video, glad to see that you are doing well and are happy, keep your head up :) good to hear that the leds are great too :) cant wait for more vids :)
Thanks for another quality video Photon, keep up the great work!
Awesome! You Replaced Them! I Like That Replacement
Glad to see you back, mate.
i only changed to the new bulbs to save money myself, i was actually wondering how you felt about the new bulbs, but now i know! love the vids, hope ur m8 ash is well!
4:20 "That is a massive saving on power" said the guy who crank up 10 kw - 20 kw light bulbs :))
Good job Photon. You managed to make up for all the power you used in your naughty experiments. Hope Ashley is doing better.
Your channel is fantastic! Even thinking of taking some courses on master level in highvoltage engineering cause of all of your insane stuff.
I swapped out my florescent lights in my garage for LEDs and after doing the math they'll pay for themselves in seven months and work so much better when it's cold. I bought some mini LEDs that look like a florescent and have magnets on the ends which are perfect for working underneath cars and recharge quickly.
I always mix my fixtures with both warm white and bright white. It makes a natural looking light that's quite nice.
wow , that's just wonderful :) LED's are the future , even my pc screen is LED
you are proper bonkers, brilliant video as ever, made me laugh out loud at the end.
I'm using some retrofit LEDs, they work "well enough", they're a warm tone, and they're not overly directional, which is nice.
Ahh yes, You did get my Lightbulb Arc pic !!
Just the information I was looking for thanks. keep the vids coming
Regards Paul
Dude....!
This is some much useful info with some very funny humor you have just cheered up my Saturday morning.. Just Subscribed to your channel.
Right i'm off to B&Q for some GU10's.
Great video look forward to some more funny electrics..!
@3:26 is there a cooling fan in the light? the 1 i taped a while ago but deleted it had a motor wind-up sound in the vid that played when it turned on.
Glad LED's have come along way since this video.
Yeeaaahh!
Andy you are back to your normal aka Photon modus :-)
I'm looking forward to the ashley vid.
And i will get a photo link to you asap!
Cheerio,
Guido
