- Aircraft are incredibly expensive to build. Not every country can afford to design, manufacture and maintain their own fleet of warplanes, especially if it wants to be always on top of its game. But what can you do if you're in constant need of new aircraft but lack the funds to regularly purchase the latest models on the market? Northrop Corporation faced this challenge and, as time has shown, found a highly successful solution.

2 things to note:
- The F-5E/F played the MiG-28’s in Top Gun, but the only F-5 to receive a MiG-28 skin in game is the F-5C.
- The F-20 was never supposed to compete with the F-16 in export sales, but changes in export policy under the Reagan administration forced the F-20 to compete with what was in most aspects a superior design.

The f-5c's "mig-28" skin is based on a real DACT livery that was itself inspired by top gun, there's a number of skins that are on the wrong plane, the British mustang gets skins that should be on the p-51c, the ROCAF f-5a gets a Korean f-5e skin, and the harrier gr.1 gets a sea harrier fa.2 skin

it never really ended up competing with the F-16. after changes in export policy, Northrop gave up and retired it because it no longer had any real purpose

Swizerland is selling it's remaining F5's back to the US to serve as OBFOR agressors. very nice jet. happy to see it life on. oh and also cool to see the US Transport craft landing here picking the thing up :)
It‘s great our F-5s get a second life. On the other hand, it‘s really sad seeing them go, they were the perfect fit for our country for so long.

The death of the F-20 wasn't technically the end of the Tiger line. Northrop based the YF-17 on the F-5, which would later go on to be handed over to and developed by McDonnell Douglas into the F/A-18 Hornet.
Truly an odd movie role for the F-5 was the 1988 movie, "Dragnet". It stared Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks.
In the movie, the F-5 was assigned to the, of all things, LAPD. It's an very unusual movie, with the soundtrack by The Art of Noise, if anyone out there remembers them.

Fun fact; the F5 is the frontline version of the T38 trainer. Which itself is a trainer version of the carrier based fighter prototype of the N156.

That is not true. You’re thinking of the F-5B or F-5F. The T-38 is different enough to have some different flight characteristics
The Swiss modification of the F-5 is just perfect! 😍 The Livery of both the air force as well as the aerobatics squadron „Patrouille Suisse“ fit so well!
Germany having a Swiss Hunter, could also get a Swiss F-5E
in my opinion, F5e used to be the most fun aircraft to play before the br decompression, but it still is pretty good

It should be noted that the T-38 is still in service as the primary advanced jet trainer for the US Air Force and was used by the US Air Force Thunderbirds aerobatic team from the mid-70's to the early 80's.

F5-C went from beign the absolute best premium to just ok with the "Decompression" update,also very predatory tactic to push the BR changes ONLY AFTER SUMMER SALE!!!

The T-38 was not the predecessor to the F-5. They have some pretty important differences between them. They were both developed from the Northrop N-156
I do like my F-5s. One of my favourite aircraft.
Lets hope that GJ manages to introduce the Swiss Tiger F-5 E with its correct modifications, when releasing its next month.

If the F-5C is at 11.0 minimum, add the AIM 9J, right? It is unfair to be uptier 90% of the time against planes with radar-guided missiles, the AIM 9E simply do not work against them...

Dear @Warthunder devs,
I joyfully play wt with my friends for over 10 years now since it was developed on playstation.
We pay "some more some less" a lot for the enjoyment of some planes and tanks ... but as everyone know Germanys tech tree suffered a lot with all the updates over the years.
Please give us the Eurofighter Typhoon Class for Germany and give me a reason to still pay into this game because I love it so much to pay into a tree that's constantly suffers 😇
It would be good if they included the F-5EM from Brazil, one of the most modern and capable F-5 in the world, uses Derby, Python 3 and 4, MAA Piranha

Gaijin PLEASE add the Indian Air Force's 1950-Present roundel, it is literally on two different in game places and still not included in the game. We only used the Ashoka Chakra for like 3 years.

The US Congress killed the F20; which should had been the replacement for the F5. Now they claim that the new T7 as the successor to the T38.
Russians have the AKM for the Army
Americans have the F5 for the Air Force.

I've got no problems flying the F-5E at its current BR, though I agree that the F-5A and F-5C should be a notch lower just so there's some difference. The radar and included EEGS make a huge difference with the 5E, along with the better missiles.
