@tracyrscott no, not a silly question. washing will make the roots unravel. the roots of locs are never going to be fully loc'd. they're always going to be loose. retwisting is just a way of making the roots look neater and keep your locs from crawling together.
did you watch the video? it's about a common question i get from parents who are worried that their child getting locs will keep them from getting a job. again, i've never had a problem getting work because of my locs, nor have i ever denied someone a job because of their hairstyle. so it's impossible for me to answer why employers would have reservations about locs.
I have had locs for over three years now. I have not had any problems with finding a job. And there are at least two other people in my company that have locs. You just have to keep them looking presentable and even professional. The only work place I have ever heard of having problems with locs are the Military.
Great video! I've been loc'd for a little over a year and a half now via palm rolling and for the most part i've stopped using products to retwist. Once you get to a certain point in your locking process you don't need 'em! Water and oils do the trick.
as your locs mature they become trained and will stay twisted. also, i think over the years most people with locs realize that loose roots aren't really a bad thing. they never look as bad as you think.
that's a personal choice. it's completely up to you if you want to wash without retwisting. there's absolutely nothing wrong with not retwisting every time you wash. heck, some people don't retwist their hair at all or only once a year. you have to figure out what's best for you based on your tastes and maintenance schedule. whatever you choose, the key is to not overdue it. anymore than every 2 weeks can lead to thinning/breakage
Hi Chesca! I started loc'ing my hair May 8, 2009. I only retwist like once every 2 months or so. I generally just retwist the front since I don't always have the time! Especially since my hubby and son both has locs and I keep up their hair. But thanks for all your informative videos. I am going out to get me pipe cleaners soon! I usually just twist, wrap, pin up or pony tail (or pigtails). I am learning so much from you and TGINatural. I truly appreciate ya!
Lol, I thought I was the only one doing the re twist half ur head trick. It's so great cause ur right people only see the front of ur head. I usually do an updo style that way I hide the back of my Locs. Keep doing ur thing. Bless!
well, one again, everyone's hair is different. so if you have a thicker than average texture, every week might be ok for you. but from what i've read and heard from professional locticians, every week can put too much stress on your locs. with that being said, i admire your dedication! i can barely retwist mine once a month! but taking a break from retwisting is never a bad thing.
hey hon i am thankful for ur videos i tried the loc knot and wow the knots were beautiful ppl were going crazy over my hair not to mention the curls luv u hon ur a life saver.
I have def washed my hair without using product. I'm glad to see someone else doing it too. Re-twisting is time consuming. And product is not necessary all the time. However I do like to put some type of oil in them just to give them that shiny look. Love the vids.
I tried the pipe cleaner look and loved it. I do it often now lol. I've tried this method before and its nice also, love all your videos and the fresh ideas for people with locs please keep them coming.
You look lovely as always... I actually prefer doing curls without a fresh retwist (not that I am doing them these days anyway)...I think it gives me a much fuller look...
Your locs are gorgeous! I have been using that "secret" for years now..lol! However I just learned something new . I'm going to try those pipe cleaner curls for the first time this weekend after trying a baking soda cleanse for the first time this weekend too. A weekend of firsts...lol. Thanks for the great information.
I love the way that you do a re-twist. My loctitan does the same method but uses a gel. Unfortunately, the gel leaves build up and I want to see if he can doe something about it. That said, the style lasted 8+ weeks lol!!!
@kbgaston you could always get loc extensions and just let your hair loc that way. short hair isn't for everyone, you just have to do what suits you best.
Love it! I will do this from now on when I just don't have all the time to do my whole head. In my family, I have yet to teach my husband, daughter and sun how to tighten their locs. So, I do EVERYbody's in the house. Way too much time.
of course you can call me chesca! :) um, no one specifically taught me how to do my hair. i just started playing with it and developing styles along the way. i watch lots of videos, look at hair blogs and forums for inspiration and try to read as much as possible about cultivating and maintaining locs. i also get a lot of info from my subscribers.
Yeah, I stopped using gel very early in my locking journey. I retwist with castor oil and peppermint oil, and I feel its done wonders; secondly, my scalp is less prone to flakiness and product build up since the switch.
A loctician did tell me about a neatening method where she rinses in the shower, twists the front 3 rows and lets the rest of her hair air dry to instill moisture but to keep it looking "neat". Nice method!
I've done "worse" re twisting only the 1st row!!!!! As for products I use no "products " at all. products as in brands, right now, I am so into the "make ur own" thing!!!
i prefer it when it isn't to separated all the time it looks more healthy with fuzz to give it body ? Obviously you have a most beautiful head of healthy locks though :)
I do that ALL the time. In fact I did that today. I washed and twisted the font and put two french braids in my hair to wear until I'm ready to enjoy bountiful waves... Plus, for me, this technique reduces the urge to over-twist. Yeah!
Wow...I've been retwisting my locs EVERY single week for 14 years. I'm only now seeing some thinning of the locs, so I've been freeforming for the last two weeks. Will look at your other vids.
I've used this little "secret" sooo many times... I have a million (or what feels like a million) locs and they are really long... No one can ever tell when my entire head isnt retwisted lol.. THANKS!
diffidently have used this method before. Sometimes you have all the intention to do them all, but as soon as you start... lol But it isnt something that i do often. also, im starting to learn that the older your locs get, the more the "frizzyness" stops bothering you.
lol. I don't do maintenance on my hair beyond separating congos but that was a pretty smart trick. I do a similar thing when cleaning for guests, I call it surface cleaning vs the real deep clean I do once a week.
Hey, Chesca! I've been watching your videos and I just wanted to share stuff. I have locs, too. I've had them for about 4 years now and I've toats done the whole only twisting the front thing. I actually did it for a while just because I'm so busy all the time that I don't really have the time to do my whole head. A little while ago I abandoned retwisting altogether so my hair is really super bushy all the time. I've kind of gotten used to it and surprisingly enough I get compliments lol
I did this on my last wash but I did separate and twist the back section and put in ponytails in the back and then I retwisted the front with clips to give a neat look.
Looks good. I suppose I do a version of that myself but I'm still new enough that I always use product. I'm still convinced that my locs are weird. Don't know what to do about that.... Take care, stranger!
@musicteacheronthego i always towel dry my hair before putting in the pipe cleaners to cut down on the drying time. so for me, over night is usually fine if i don't do it too late at night. i used the blow dryer for no more than 10 minutes. if your hair is damp, the curls won't hold. the key is for your hair to be as dry as possible.
@PictishPrince not really. it gets easier because you've had more practice. longer hair typically takes a bit longer to work with because of the length
lol i do this too - except i'm 'lazier' so I keep the back in a pony tail (also my locks are much shorter) and curl the front half! Love hair 'secrets' ;) You look fab. Hope your day went well.
OMG !!! I do this to my daughter's hair ALL the time, especially if she needs a quick cute hairstyle. My 14 y/o has had traditional locs since she was 6 y/o. Her locs are the same length as yours, but are a little smaller. Too funny ! I thought I was the only one who took short cuts when it came to the quick styles !
@evealexsis ha! she's my friend now, but this was actually the first time we'd met. she's a filmmaker and she's working on a documentary about women in social media. it's not really about hair :)
For me, I had a job interview. Desperately need a retwist. Washed my hair, made a ponytail, and retwisted the edges, tucked them in the ponytail and made a bun!
I only relatch my locs once every 3-4 months. until then I do a nonproduct (or coconut oil) "retwist" to the front or I do bantu knots. And sometimes I just style to hide the frizz.
i do this ALL the time, my locs are smaller so i can't really fool anyone when i wash my hair & don't have time to create picture perfect retwisted locs. what i wanna know is how to do pipecleaner curls!! *goes thru all your videos lol.
lol. I've done this even before I had locs. When I would wear braids and they were starting to look kinda old, i'd redo the first few rows. Funny enough though, I styled my hair this way exactly for my a senior design presentation a few months ago (I'm a recent Mechanical Engineering graduate). With so much going on at the end of my final semester I either had the choice to sleep or retwist my locs...needless to say, I needed sleep. So I retwisted the front then put everything in pipe cleaners.
@ChristInLimbo aw thank you for the compliment, but there's no need to be jealous. everyone is beautiful in their own way, including yourself! you just might not realize it yet. it took me years to be really comfortable in my own skin and i think that confidence is what people see that makes me truly makes me attractive, not just how i look on the outside. thanks again for the kind words :)
Haha yeaaaah I'm not the only one who cheats sometimes. I've definitely pulled the "twist the front portion and leave the back alone" more than once due to extreme time crunching. It works wonders I love it.
I do this all the time. My locs are about shoulder length and sumtimes when it's too late or i'm feeling lazy, after i wash, i retwist the first two or three rows around my edges and bantu knot my whole head ( mr hair is about shoulder length). I get cute curls and neat edges in the morning!
Pipe cleaner curls are one of my fave styles. I have sisterlocks and my stylist does mine. She puts about 4 locks or less to a pipe cleaner and twist them closed. When done, the pipe cleaners themselves look like a style. I cover with a hat and wear them for days...like three or more depending on what's going on. I stay in bootcamp sweating like a crazy person, so they don't last as long as they would if I didn't sweat like I do!!! Makes me sad! ;o( But a girl's got to get her workout in!
@TheHaitianQueen1 great tip! my locs don't really crawl together, but i know it's an issue for some people. i'm being filmed for part of a documentary project! :)
Do it often - but this method still takes super long. So I'll take freshly washed hair that's damp n section it into 10 pieces- curl the sections onto themselves n leave them so for a day n presto! Victoria secret big hair :) xoxo
It's funny because I was never afraid while I was twisting every week for 14 years, but after watching all of these vids, I'm terrified. Back when I started there wasn't much info on locs. The lady who helped me lock (fom 2 strand twists) told me she twisted hers every week, so I did the same. I stopped because they were starting to look flat and lifeless. I want more volume and curl. It's been a month since I last twised. I survived this long, don't think I'll twist anytime soon.
@natralyght the trick is to make sure your hair is wet when you put the pipe cleaners in, and completely dry before removing them. I've also heard that if you combine the pipcleaners you can make a heavier "curler" that's better for thicker locs. let me know if this helps!
she used pipe cleaners. i've been setting my loss w/them for the past 6 yrs. if you sit under the dryer for about an hour or so you will get a great set. my curls last until i wash them out.
@CherishMyDaughter ha! a few people have said that! i walked the dogs with my pipe cleaners in and felt kinda silly! glad you guys thought it was cute :)
I love your videos! I've had locs for 4 yrs & never heard of loc knots or using pipe cleaners. Man these are great ideas!!! I just have 1 question, how do your locs stay tight when re-twisting w/o clips? I have 2 use clips or they don't stay.
@tyshi7 just plain water! depending on how often i wrap my hair at night (which varies) the twists usually stay for about 1-2 weeks. but i've had locs for 7 years now, so my hair is pretty much trained to grow in a twisted pattern. i'm still using black castor oil, but not to twist, just on my hairline.
@nevabetta09 not necessarily. i know plenty of people that have never retwisted their hair with product, from day one. like i said before, everyone's hair is different and what works for me might not work for you and vice versa.
girrrrll i do that all the time. the longer my hair became, i started to realise that no one sees the back so most of the time i retwist the front bit of my hair (ear to ear like you did) and im done haha. or and even quicker way to get curls i just do some bantu knots and i get some really nice waves...not quite the same as pipe cleaners but it does the job sometimes
I twist with no product (even in my other set of locks from a few years ago) when I'm watching television, just doing nothing, but when I SERIOUSLY re-do my roots, it's always with some kind of product like a gel or a pomade. Always seems to last longer and to hold the "newness" in place, if you know what I mean. Interesting though. Different things work for different folks, right. Finally! Something that is COMPLETELY OURS that they can't come in on, make money from...hone in on! YEEAAAHH!!!
I thought I was one of few that did this...been retwisting the front for a "quick fix" for a couple years now and the last time I did it I was ready to go out way before my friend was ready so I let the secret out.....I usually will curl my locs or will wear one of those hair net, slouchy hat thingys and no one ever knows the difference :-)
Question for you : have u ever semi freeformed? Its basically freeforming- no twisting - for weeks / months at a time. I inadvertently started doing that last summer and it has done wonders for my hair. I'm actually thinking about freeforming full time as time goes on. I'm 2.5 yrs in the game *yay me ^_^ * and I've been watching your vids for over a yr now. Love ur tutorials, love ur funnies, love ur love (Congrats on the engagement btw. Ull love the married life), and love seeing u blessed!
@tmice826 i don't do this method very often, only if i'm pressed for time. your locs are really only in "danger" of combining after months without maintenance. i haven't run into that problem myself, but as long as you separate your locs, even without retwisting, then it shouldn't be an issue.
@Telisaking everyone's level of knowledge when it comes to locs and natural hair is different. so what might not be new information to you, is for someone else.
I remember I use to fight with you a few years back, im sorry I was trolling u and u blocked me. You are truly one of a kind! Just all around sexy women, from ur voice to your smile and locks......
thanks! check out my "clip free loc maintenance" video for step by step how i retwist my hair. it's partially the technique and the fact that my hair is mature, so it's pretty much trained.
I perform a lot and barely have time to twist... twisting just the front is something I always do to get by before I have time to retwist my entire head!! Shhh don't tell anyone! Lol!
@tracyrscott no, not a silly question. washing will make the roots unravel. the roots of locs are never going to be fully loc'd. they're always going to be loose. retwisting is just a way of making the roots look neater and keep your locs from crawling together.

Wow, out of the gazillion videos on loc maintenance, I actually learned something from this one. Thanks.
I sure have done this many times before, for work, meetings, interviews, etc.; quick and easy fix. Your locks look great by the way!
I completely agree. I don't cry over my new growth! I've had my locs for 9 years...
that's a personal choice. it's completely up to you if you want to wash without retwisting. there's absolutely nothing wrong with not retwisting every time you wash. heck, some people don't retwist their hair at all or only once a year. you have to figure out what's best for you based on your tastes and maintenance schedule. whatever you choose, the key is to not overdue it. anymore than every 2 weeks can lead to thinning/breakage

Is she in there filming you as apart of the Next UP winner?
So proud of you hun! Congrats!!!
You look lovely as always... I actually prefer doing curls without a fresh retwist (not that I am doing them these days anyway)...I think it gives me a much fuller look...
it looked really cute when you had the pipe cleaners in! very out-of-the-box! i might try it
Your locs are gorgeous! I have been using that "secret" for years now..lol! However I just learned something new . I'm going to try those pipe cleaner curls for the first time this weekend after trying a baking soda cleanse for the first time this weekend too. A weekend of firsts...lol. @kbgaston you could always get loc extensions and just let your hair loc that way. short hair isn't for everyone, you just have to do what suits you best.
I love the fact that your friend is a photographer!!! Its a great idea because we need some quality videos about hair and his was a good one!
Love it! I will do this from now on when I just don't have all the time to do my whole head. In my family, I have yet to teach my husband, daughter and sun how to tighten their locs. So, I do EVERYbody's in the house. Way too much time.

@trent353 agreed. the frizzes don't really bother me anymore. it's just part of my hair's natural texture
i prefer it when it isn't to separated all the time it looks more healthy with fuzz to give it body ? Obviously you have a most beautiful head of healthy locks though :)
I do that ALL the time. In fact I did that today. I washed and twisted the font and put two french braids in my hair to wear until I'm ready to enjoy bountiful waves... Plus, for me, this technique reduces the urge to over-twist. Yeah!
Your hair came out great! I just started my loc journey today with comb coils :) thanks for all the inspiration!

I liked your hair in the pipe cleaners too! It was punky and sharp! :)
I don't have locks but I still love to watch your videos! So informational! :)
diffidently have used this method before.
Sometimes you have all the intention to do them all, but as soon as you start... lol
But it isnt something that i do often.
also, im starting to learn that the older your locs get, the more the "frizzyness" stops bothering you.
lol. I don't do maintenance on my hair beyond separating congos but that was a pretty smart trick. I do a similar thing when cleaning for guests, I call it surface cleaning vs the real deep clean I do once a week.

that looks far better than i anticipated

ok, there goes my lesson in watching a full video before asking questions :) THANKS!
@TheHaitianQueen1 great tip! my locs don't really crawl together, but i know it's an issue for some people. i'm being filmed for part of a documentary project! :)
I usually only retwist the front of my hair too, usually it takes too much time to do all of it so only doing the front is much faster.

Shalom & Blessings!
I always wondered who she reminded me of. Finally got it. Tia and Tamara from Sister Sister.
wow! your beautiful hair has grown. i remember when you first started wow!
she is soo pretty..luv the curly locs though..
Your locs are beautiful!!!
Pretty cool that you never use product to twist your hair. That way, your locs stay nice and clean as they grow. No residue.
@CherishMyDaughter ha! a few people have said that! i walked the dogs with my pipe cleaners in and felt kinda silly! glad you guys thought it was cute :)

Your parts look really neat.
I've been twisting my dreads together as a means to retwist them, but I think I'll try your method!
YEEAAAHH!!!
I do the pipe cleaner curls all the time without a retwist I think it looks fuller
@Lazybabyz ha! really? well they're both beautiful so thank you!
@kbgaston I started my Locs with loc extensions 4 yrs ago. I cut them out as my hair got longer. Chesca this is a great video!!
I do that all the time except I don't retwist at all and I use flexy rods. The curls turn out so big that it distracts people from my messy roots =)
@tmice826 i don't do this method very often, only if i'm pressed for time. your locs are really only in "danger" of combining after months without maintenance. i haven't run into that problem myself, but as long as you separate your locs, even without retwisting, then it shouldn't be an issue.
@andomaxcha thanks for your concern, but i've had locs for almost 8 years and have never had any issues resulting from over twisting or over styling.
@Telisaking everyone's level of knowledge when it comes to locs and natural hair is different. so what might not be new information to you, is for someone else.
So pretty. Becareful with retwisting too tightly though and over styling your hair.
Very pretty look. How do you care for your hair when not re-twisting often? You know, to keep the locs from joining together.
Your locs are really beautiful:)
I love your hair! Thanks for sharing your secrets
I remember I use to fight with you a few years back, im sorry I was trolling u and u blocked me. You are truly one of a kind! Just all around sexy women, from ur voice to your smile and locks......
Beautiful locs and hair.
I love your hair...thanks for the tips. I have taken up body surfing and am looking for ways to maintain my dreads. Any suggestions? Thanks, Santosha
thanks! check out my "clip free loc maintenance" video for step by step how i retwist my hair. it's partially the technique and the fact that my hair is mature, so it's pretty much trained.
I perform a lot and barely have time to twist... twisting just the front is something I always do to get by before I have time to retwist my entire head!! Shhh don't tell anyone! Lol!
