- The 2024 Roller Coaster Riding Season has officially ARRIVED!
(And everyone cheers!)
This past weekend, our homepark: Kennywood Park in Pittsburgh, PA opened for the 2024 season! (Their 126th year of operation - isn't that amazing?!)
And, you know we couldn't miss opening day!
It was fabulous in absolutely every way (except for the wind, without the wind it would have been PERFECT). In 2023 and 2022, opening weekend was cold and rainy, so to have a mild, sunny day felt like an absolute dream! (Let's just say: the city of Pittsburgh is not known for it's "consistent" spring weather.)
We were SHOCKED by the HUGE turnout for the day! We arrived 45 minutes early - and thank goodness we did! Because by the time we were riding Phantom (about 10 minutes after park open) the line of cars stretching down the road, waiting to turn into the parking lot, was easily a mile long!! BANANAS!
It just goes to prove that all the hard work that park management has been putting into revitalizing the park over the last few years has really paid off. Kennywood has an EXTREMELY LOYAL base of season passholders who were SO excited to get back into the park for the 2024 season (and we were part of that crowd!)
We only spent a few hours in the park, but we rode SO many rides and had the most fantastic time! We absolutely cannot wait for more Kennywood days this season - happy summer!!

That was me, pushing the Lil Phantom for 4 hours with my team members. It was tough!!!
Omigoodness! That was so crazy! Was it just too cold for it to run fast enough to make it back into the station? (my husband & I were trying to figure it out - we've seen Lil Phantom running during Holiday Lights - so we didn't think it was the temperature, but we couldn't figure it out otherwise!) You guys were SUPER HEROS for doing that! My kids were SO excited to ride their favorite kiddie coaster!!
I am from the Philadelphia, PA area and only got to visit Kennywood once. It is a nice regional park that the Pittsburgh area can be proud to have. They have a good mix of both old and new rides. Too bad about the long lines but that is normal for most parks that charge just charge you to get in. Parks like Kenobles that operate on both one price and tickets have an incentive to keep their lines moving. The more ticket riders get on the more revenue the park generates. The best time to go to one price parks is on weekdays before most schools are out so there are less crowds.
Kennywood is a lovely park! We usually stay away when we know the park is super busy, but we couldn't miss a beautiful, sun-shiny, opening day!
Knoebels is awesome - I wish Idlewild (Kennywood's sister park in Ligonier, PA) would move to a "no admission, buy tickets to ride" model!

A nice video of my home park. I really liked the comment about the Steel Curtain being on the same cup as obsolete or gone rides! 😆
Hopefully sooner, rather than later, Steel Curtain comes back! Until then, at least we have Phantom!

phantom's revenge is perfection! rode the original steel phantom back in the 90's a million times! actually prefer the old phantom than the revenge but revenge is still really good
I only got to ride the original Phantom once - I was JUST tall enough to ride it during it's last season of operation (I actually lost an earring in the queue - you had to remove your earrings prior to riding and I dropped one of them and it disappeared!) We LOVE the Revenge though!

I'm glad that there were a lot of people there for season tickets. I'm looking forward to getting back but I'm probably going to wait until I can go during the week.
We saw photos & videos of the season pass processing in the weeks it was open before opening day - and the lines were super long then too! Good for Kennywood pulling in such a dedicated and LARGE season pass crowd!
