Improper distribution and regional blocks promote a lot of piracy. With fragmented streaming services and regional blocks, piracy is a choice that even the seasoned film buff with money to shell out has to resort to.

Prologue: Had several occasions when my BluRay player software, the one that came with the drive I bought for 70€ would not work.
    __________________________________________________________
    The Story:
Late evening, friends went home or offline. Now what to do?
A film would be nice, I thought.
Go through my movie collection. Mostly blurays as I like good image and sound quality. "Edge of Tomorrow" - have not seen that in a while.
Open tray, put in disc, launch software.
    Little prompt saying: "Unknown error"
Restart, try again. Same error. [swearing]
Start looking online while I resort to my "computer knowledge" on how to pin point the problem.
Online yields nothing except a forum that may hold the answer but requires me to log in. If I wanted to log in, I would not have gotten my media in physical form!
Software says: "Update now, only 49.99€" [extensive swearing ensues]
So with my BluRay on hand and an error on display, I wrote a very angry email. Feeling better, I deleted the email and wrote a very formal one. It will later turn out you need to log in to submit a "support form".
Remember: It is late night, probably weekend.
I want my film NOW. Not in 4 days when some support guy gets through the pile of support tickets.
With my bought film, broken software and unwilling to spend 50€ on software that does not even work, I went for the torrent.

    Afterword:
I was set for the legal route. I like good filmes and there are no FOSS films (yet). That legal route takes several days. Before I get to the desired film, I have to watch ads. UA-cam costs nothing and displays ads to pay for itself. This film did cost money and still displays ads? How does that make sense? The hardware required to watch said film was obtained by choice. The film is protected from pirates by some encryption. To watch it, you need special software (wich some company has a monopoly on?). That software does not work half the time and takes several days to get working.
The pirated version takes about 4 hours to obtain, has no ads and works with any software that can display videos. All of the desired stuff without paying for it.
I don´t think piracy has to do with people beeing unwilling to pay. I am paying for it. I look up release dates, go to my local shop and buy the thing because I don´t trust the cloud to still be there in 10 years.
It is a service problem! If the paid option takes longer and is more complicated on top of all the unwanted extras, of course people will resort to the free route!
"You wouldn´t download a car" is not wrong. But the day my car makes me watch an ad before I can drive off, I will damn sure download a car!

I like the emphasis on critically thinking through these ethical questions

The day when money actually reaches to the pockets of the real artists, and NOT the money makers in the middle, two things.
    1. Artists would get encouragement, and will demand less money (I am sure most of them don't mind if they don't earn billions because satisfaction and happiness they gain is not from money), and content becomes cheap.
    2. More and more people will actually buy because they are morally obligated to pay for something they liked, especially when it is within their reach. (When you can donate to a homeless person who does you nothing, how can you not do it for someone who actually gives you something)

This is such a real issue, companies ought to stop whining before they fix their distribution.

When I started video reviews, I wanted to review movies that I owned and bought with money. At the time I didn't know there was software that you could use to transfer DVDs into mpgs. So I pirated. I wanted to expand to movies I watched in Netflix or movies at saw at other people's places so I could do review those movies. Those movies were bought/payed for by someone. But I pirated.

when all movies are remakes and franchises, does it matter anymore? cause either way I'm not paying for the same movie over and over.

Soon enough they're going to have it to the point where if the screen notices more than two people in your living room when you're watching a movie that you just purchased it will stop it and lock it
