This is the first proper 'study with me' video of the new season. If you're new to the series, I'll be documenting my process of preparing for the MRCOG, a postgraduate medical speciality exam for Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In this video, I take you through a day off work where I spent some time 'scoping the subject' - ie: going through the specification and organising my Evernote and Notability notebooks into a reasonable structure. We end with a lovely evening of board games and food, courtesy of Just Eat, who are very kindly sponsoring the video. Enjoy xx

Ali Did you ever do the follow ups going more into detail about how this scoping out the subject works? I have searched but couldn't find anything. I’d really appreciate a link to get more info on this please.
Ali, somehow you manage to romanticize studying, and its incredible
Exactly how I feel when watching his vids.
Your lifestyle is inspiring.
"Active Recall is a Way of Life" demands a mug.
he sure needs to step up his merch game
Agreed.
7:04 GIVE THIS MAN AN OSCAR
Why ?
No body:
Ali: active recall is the most efficient study technique
Ever*
@@vishalam466 how do u use it? Personally?
I completely stopped taking notes. But what i used to highlight... Is now a question. And i go through these questions by spacing. At the beginning it will be easy.. Give 2 to 3 days and then try recalling... You will know the struggle
@@vishalam466 yes i try to do a chap then do question but it seems like my textbook isnt useful and making notes felt like a waste of time since then i didnt have timr to revise them as they take too long
Just active recall won't work. Active recall + spaced repetition is the key.
And about questions... Whatever you feel is important and should be in your mind... Turn it into a question and try to recall it. In the book ' make it stick' ... The 2nd chapter is named... To learn, retrieve.
Your voice is super relaxing! You should do ASMR 😂😂
Ps. You put too much milk in your tea
@@ThatMedic I agree. It's like relaxing modified electronic voice.
hahahh !!!!!!! You have no clue ! I have actually been using Ali's videos as some kinda of psedo-ASMR since I discovered him.
Hey! Anki really helped me memorize the names of the bones and the markings 😻 knowing about active recall is a blessing! Thanks!
Just clicked on the Spotify playlist and immediately saw Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Breaking Bad.
Looks like I'll be using this one.
In all seriousness, I honestly don't know what I would do without your channel. I've learnt so much from it, and it's evident you put a lot of work into all of you videos, as they all come out stunning and are very often "evidence-based" ;) ! I don't know how you do it, but I'm bloody glad you do. You're also such a genuine and nice person, which is becoming rarer nowadays, I've got no idea how you haven't got more subscribers!
Please make more videos about scoping the subject, like how to properly do it and what apps/tools to use. It would be much appreciated 😁
More details here skl.sh/2WYPnCS
Hey, I'm Brazilian and I just love your channel
At first I was not understand much of what you were talking, cause my english teacher talk VERY slow and I wasn't accustomed with it, but some videos ago and I'm understanding everything.
Thank u for helping me with my studies and with my english ;u;
Awesome to get a closer look at your "scoping the subject" strategy! Also, about music while studying... I've always been the type of person that can't study without listening to pretty upbeat and "distracting" music (if you'd ask other people lol) I looked it up as well, but apparently when you've got a chronically underaroused brain such as with ADHD/ADD you actually tend to need that extra bit of stimulation to be able to concentrate! Which was very eye-opening to me, and finally explained why the only way I could write any assignment was while listening to a live coldplay concert on the other half of my screen LOL. Sounds crazy I know!! But if I don't I just keep zoning out every split second haha. There's some literature published about this as well. Music is basically a way of self-medicating dopamine if you think about it. I personally think that, it also depends on the task at hand which also brings a layer of stimulation to your brain. For example, if I'm doing some physics I tend to turn to classical music because the subject itself is stimulating enough. Just a little theory of mine, based on my own experience and what I've read! Also, I'm so excited about this series!! Can't wait for the rest!
WOW, I didn't know that and now I'm pretty sure I have an underaroused brain aswell lol! XD
I hope u can make more “study with me” videos,Ali. Your video helps me to be more motivated on my studies.💪🏼💪🏼
Right -settlers of catain is the single most underrated board game of all time I think you should just do a video about that cause you would honestly go viral it’s thattt good
Hey, Ali. I’m starting university next year. I’ve got a lot of admission and scholarship exams coming before the end of this year and I haven’t really prepared for anything yet. Your videos help me get motivated although I’m a real lazy bum myself. Thanks for all these videos, I’m trying my best to finally learning my way to being productive.
I hope I get to pass my exams for college, though!
Great video! I’m a surgeon general and resident in Surgical Oncology here in Brazil, and I’ve been following your work for quite some time now. I also use the iPad Pro + Apple Pencil + Notability combo for notes, and Evernote for everything I might need in my daily practice. I tried several times using flash cards as a method of active recall, but I just can’t seem to get used to it. I hope you make a video on how you decide what topics you cover on “evernote/one note” and what you use the flash cards for. Keep up your awesome work!
Finally a study with me. I appreciate your videos a lotttt. They are very helpful. Please do more revision tips for A levels
if somebody hasn’t hear that yet: HE IS JUNIOR DOCTOR WORKING IN CAMBRIDGE
WHAT? CANT HEAR YOU
NANI?
What
Love the fact that you started adding some magic tricks into your filming.. here with the socks or the previous vid with the phone review ;D
Hey Ali! Could you do videos giving a walkthrough of different specialties? Perhaps your friends and colleagues can talk about the extracurricular activities they did in Med school to be considered as a competitive candidate and what post-grad training is like!
Study with me! Finally
Lol I can totally relate to that "productive procrastination". One time I had my 25 min study break, which turned into 'let's sew this torn pants you've seldomly worn'. Great video as always Ali :)
Love your content. It motivated me to study harder and more efficiently every day.
I think I just discovered one of my new favorite channels. Awesome work !
I find you approaches to topics very fascinating. You earned a new subscriber.
So you do your scoping at a leisurely pace? I thought it might take you a while to scope each subject. Can't say I've understood it exactly, but seems like you know what you're doing. Hope I had the same clarity.
I like studying with classical music but when I am reading a book (mostly fiction) I put on a indie playlist from Spotify, don't know why but when I listing back to the music I can remember all I read in the book. Is like this perfume, it smells really great, is a man perfume, every time I pass by a guy with that perfume all I can remember is the cruise I went to, I remember the place where I first got the smell, it was one of does "family" dinner, the last meal of the day. That nostalgic feeling is super strong hahaGreat video btw, thank you!
Please do more Videos like that, i am a german Student and i Love to Look St. your Videos before i Go to sleep
Your videos always help me feel peaceful, keep up the great work!
My vote goes to OneNote. I do notes in a Cornel Format thing but also insert tables within the table and make a 3rd collumn for extra info (either not explained in the study material or stuff I don't remember). It worked great for typed notes and you could probably hook up your iPad to it to take written notes.
Evernote just wasn't my thing. For the tablet I use Lecture Notes which is the best app I found for Android since OneNote sucks on it. ^.^ Thank you very much for the video. I study psychology and really want to apply the techniques you preach this year, so please, take us along the process whenever you can. :)
oh the days before my man found notion.
Ali, thank you very much for such fantastic videos! You make studying process so engaging and motivational! I study Finance and have never heard about active recall studying technique and thanks to your video discovered that I've been studying ineffectively! I would love to see some videos by you on how to study correctly, but first I'm going to see your other videos, because I believe there is some valuable information I can get from it!
Thank you again, Ali and I wish you all the best with what you are doing!
Regards,
Pavel
Exactly me, I use Evernote for preparing summary prior lectures and Notability for on-the-spot note taking.
Loving the end of the video.
I love your study space! It’s so well structured
We need more of these!
the music while you were eating 😂😂😂 thanks for the video love this series
Great video Ali! First year psychology student from Leuven here, and really appreciate the tips and tricks. Got an Ipad Pro and using Anki to prep for my classes at the moment and I love it. Cheers!
I’m a 1st year medical student & ive been having trouble focusing & concentrating on my studies. What would you recommend I do?
Btw I love your videos.
Check out all his previous videos on active recall and space repetition. It's incredibly helpful 👍
@@jruizcadalso that has nothing to do with focus.
You could try a focus keeping app. I use an app called „Focus Keeper” on iphone. It really helps me to sit down and study without distractions.
if you don't meditate I can highly recommend starting today with it.
Your Dp attracted my attention
Ali, I love how productive you are! 👍🏽☺️
I follow u by heart u have give me a new prespective about studying i now learn with ur tecniques and my productivity is amazing
Loving your videos, very beneficial and inspiring!
Hey Ali, you talk about active recall , but can you explain how you learn that information that you then proceed to recall. I know you say notes aren't the best, so what do you recommend as the best way to learnt the information first so that you can do active recall?
I need to listen to popular songs while I take notes because it makes me more focused. If I listen to instruments or nature sounds I will drift away. I am noting this because not everyone functions the same. Outloud repetition and teaching a subject to someone are the best way for me to study. Anyways, I am 4th year medical student and this has worked for me so far.
Please make it available as non-live video too. Incase I miss it.
i second this
Premiers are stand alone videos with a live chat lol. it’s not a live stream
How do I active recall? Do I read the question and write whatever I can recall ,realise that I forgot something and make remarks at the thing I wrote moments ago? Or, I read the question and I recall without writing and make notes on the question?
Wow waited for this for so long loved it!!!!! 😊
I'm learning so much from you!
I just found out about your channel yesterday. And you have been helpful. I do high school and college classes. So i always have a lot of work. All your tips and tricks have been helpful. And i am excited to use them to improve in my Biology 111. Thank you
Omg i love your videoss!!!! you have you idea how many times ive been rewathcing all your videos ahahahaa it's just so good! also who here needs his background music too?? I know i need them. :') hehe thank you Ali for posting all this tips, hopefully you will keep them coming even tho you have graduated.
Please make a tutorial on how you spin your pen like that, because damn, that's pretty cool lol.
Love study with me videos!!
hahahaahah ! that cute cinematic montage of you all eating food ! lol !
I love you're organization .Is super!.
I need to apply that in my life.
hello! do you mind doing a video on how to prepare for a new school year :-)
Any plans on upgrading to new iPad 11”? Or sticking with 10.5”? The only thing I liked from the new iPad is the new Apple pencil. Felt like it had a better grip. And the wireless is nice considering that you don’t have to worry about losing the top from the charging end. By the way, out of curiosity, do you use screen protectors on your Apple Watch? Would love to hear your opinion on both topics.
Can you make a video about how to study pharmacology effectively?
Any advice for someone who does well in all the smaller tests for acceptance to the exams, but barely scrapes by during the exams? I've started using Anki this semester(thanks to you) and it has drastically increased my marks. I'm about to write exams and I'm procrastinating everyday due to the fact that I don't know where to start. It's been 5 days now... And I'll be writing next week Saturday. I just can't get myself to study for more then an hour.
Love from South Africa.
You just said it. Stop procrastinating and start doing some work.
I’m thinking about my next purchase and what I should save up for next which I’ve narrowed it down between an iPad Pro and an Apple Watch. I’m currently a university student but not sure the iPad would fit into my needs but does look very useful especially for all the reading and then I also do a fair amount of sport so was wondering which you would advise. Obviously the price is a factor I’ve already taken into account. Your videos are always so helpful and keep studying with the exam you’ll ace it!!
iPad IMO. The watch is just a notification and fitness device. I have the watch tho.
The video turned to be shorter than i expected 😭
Please make a video on how you use notability and one note to make your reviews
You have made me way more productive! Thank you so much! Greetings from germany :)
Thank you so much for sharing your Spotify Study With Me playlist with us! c:
i like your videos, you have great tips and it helps me with my biology studies
how different are your active recall questions from your revision guide? i started making AR questions at the beginning of term but have just decided to also put them into "condensed note" format (your revision guide) to have an idea of the place of each topic in a subject - something that quizlet obviously doesn't do. Not sure if it's productive to do so though because I am simply just copy/pasting my AR questions. The only difference is organising them appropriately
Hey Ali! Great video and brilliant channel... always enjoy watching your videos and learning new ways to study but I have this problem with active recall... My problem is creating questions because at first my questions may seem like good questions but then I end up getting lazy and end up with almost 100 questions for one section of work, so how do you go about writing out questions for active recall and similarly, how do you summarise your content?
thank you! this video helped me a lot in the way i study
I'm so thankful for your channel
What if you're trying to learn a new skill - not study for an exam…would you still recommend active recall?
This really isn't a study question, but I have questions as to how interact with people and become friends with people? I am currently in college and I'm a little self conscious and I (mostly) enjoy spending time by myself, but sometimes I do wonder what I'm missing when I see other people hang out and have fun and be comfortable around each other. My parents were always kinda of wary with other people so I never hung out with others often. Id appreciate any advice, thx!
@@aliabdaal Thx! Though I'm not sure how much it costs XD. My art class is already expensive enough.
That trackpad seems like a waste of money since you described how you use it for scrolling/gestures, but with the laptop being opened, you can just use that trackpad and you seem to use your mouse for scrolling a lot more. :P
Active recall for the win! Great vid. Good luck with your exam!
So good. Thanks for the videos! I think it's awesome that what you're learning and gaining through life has an influence on other people's life:) There's a saying; you study and share:D. Just wanna be a person who share things that help my growth in life and better if these could have a strong influence on other's life😀. Normally don't leave comments this long but I'm so thankful for this moment😊. Wish you all the best! Looking forward to watch your upcoming videos!
I’d like to know how you name and organize your files in the computer and iPad
Hi Ali....love your videos. They are super helpful...
Can you give some tips on what to do when your mind gets saturated after too much studying...
Like no matter how hard you try, nothing will go in anymore....
We have 6 hr classes till late afternoon...but I get saturated after only 3-4 hrs of self studying (breaks included).
Bcoz of this I have fallen behind on my schedule, like a lot ...
So any tips would be helpful...
Thanks...
I'm going into my first year of nursing school and tailoring how I prepare for it based on your videos! Thanks so much! I can't seem to find a channel that's run by a nursing student :(
I did not think about doing this when I was in school for IT. Wish I had.
I tend to play video games when i take breaks, by the way do you have any study tips for computer programming like HTML and Java? Not sure if active recall is suitable here. Appreciate some help since my courses in programming start next week.
thanks for the spotify playlist Dr. Ali.
Do you ever find that your logitech master mx mouse skips on screen? I've recently got one and I'm not sure if it was just me but found that the mouse skips a lot and wonder if it happens to you.
could you please explain the wheelchair???
I don't understand, when I do active recall, should I prepare the flashcards when I was studying the subject for the first time, but it took me a lot of time..plus should I study the flashcards immediately after I finished studying the topic or I use it as revising material? Like a day or week later?
Because I studied yesterday, and tried some flashcards with anki today but I couldn't remember anything..
I hope someone can help, and sorry English isn't my first language..
I’m new here and I totally love ur content. Looking forward for more. And all the bets for ur exams ❣️🙌🏻
i should've not watched this video by the mid-night, the Peking duck is killing my sleepiness.

Hello, I'm looking at getting the new 11" iPad Pro to use as a note taking device for my degree, how many gb of storage do you recommend? The 64gb model is much cheaper than the next size up so ideally I would be looking at that model. Thanks for all of your useful study videos, they are getting me settled into my degree nicely.
