This might be interesting for your thesis/dissertation: I'm currently in Austria and the other day I learned that the German word "Gift" means "poison," but it historically has ties to gift-giving. Think of all the times something was "gifted" in Grimm's Fairy Tales, since "gift" also meant a dose of something... and then of course Alice in Wonderland comes to mind! Anyway, I think it's great that you shared at least a little bit about your research! You never know what insights people on the internet might have...

Your dissertation sounds fascinating! Children's literature is such a fun topic, and so important too. I really loved rereading Alice in Wonderland the year before last but never got around to reading his letters. I would, however, advise against the product you advertise here. I've seen people accuse it of promoting laziness but I'm not sure that's truly the appeal - it seems to be more about efficiency, the ever-increasing pressure on young people to do as much as possible (and indeed more than is possible) in very little time. Genei probably seems like a great idea if you're feeling overworked or stressed and under pressure, but I really don't think it's worth it in the long run. You really do need to spend time with your reading, to ensure you truly understand it and can form your own opinions. I say this as a PhD student (in English lit) - it's worth spending what feels like "too long" on each piece of writing to truly sink your teeth into it. It's so easy for students to end up regurgitating what critics say - I think it comes from a lack of confidence in our own ideas, and the sense that if something is written in a book it must be true or a valid argument - but that's really not how literary criticism is meant to be done. You're capable of so much more!!
i'm halfway through second term of my second year and all my yet-to-write essays are hunting me hahaha glad you know you're making progress on the dissertation! i can't wait to write mine in 2 years (actually 2 different dissertations bc i do two degrees but that's an entire different story)

Haha i do it sometimes 😋 And yes, I was wondering about the dissertation too, especially because you seemed so confused as to what to pick in the beginning, I was curious to see how you had finally decided to choose what you are working on now... But I totally understand what you are saying about not revealing the theme and contents... I mean, when I'm thinking about something, i like to pen down my own thoughts before reading others' writings on the same subject or talk about it or have people comment on it, because I KNOW that I'll get influenced. Sometimes, so much so that nothing remains original anymore. It's valuable to take inputs and change it when required, yes... Oh you get what I mean! Thank you for taking out the time to post these videos! And I also love how your life has so much balance now ❣️

This is weird timing, I’ve literally just finished one of my final year essays. Still got referencing to do though and a summary to write in Arabic but the essay itself is done! I study Modern Language at the moment so most of my grade will be based on exams rather than essays, but I’m trying to do well in essays to take pressure off exams. 2 essays done, 2 to go! Thanks ruby you're so inspiring. One thing I love about studying with dark academia is it gives us a way joy of romantazing aesthetics with our intellectual pursuits and curiosity to explore (the eunoia)
When I was a kid I read a sci-fi short story called "Mimsy Were the Borogroves" about two kids who disect and find meaning in the Jabberwocky poem and use it as a blueprint to for a time machine. They made a very loose movie version called "The Last Mimzy" which was cute. But if you can find the story you might wanna check it out.
And then there was me, writing my honors thesis in one night… well not really but most of it! I couldn’t get away with that for my master’s but I thrive in that last minute pressure. I’m not saying it good, it’s horrible. But this is inspiring! Maybe will help organize for PhD dissertation when I get there!
I assume you have, but I just got to the part where you say the 1998 text is the first one on gift-giving - have you read The Gift by Marcel Mauss? Highly recommend if not, it sounds like it might be relevant to you!

Wow, that Genei app seems really dodgy. Researchers obviously would not use "AI" to summarise what they should understand from an article. It is aimed at students who want to avoid studying and get away with it.
Sure, researchers probably wouldn’t use Genei, but why shouldn’t students? I know I struggle massively with comprehending long, complex academic texts, and the idea of a program that could help lay those ideas out for me more plainly, to help me wrap my head around them so that I can then dive back into the text and start analysing it more deeply, actually now knowing what I’m looking at? That sounds wonderful! There’s a lot of elitism in academia around doing things “the right way”, condoning the use of modern technologies and alternative learning techniques in favour of traditional ideas about how we “should” learn. By maintaining these limiting, condescending views about what academia should be, we’re just perpetuating that culture of elitism, classism and ableism in academia, are we not? Just my take 🙂 I think Genei sounds like a really cool service, something that could help a lot of students.
@@Misseggy24 completely agree! I feel like the original commenter might have missed the point of the app, which in my view is to provide a clearer summary of what the criticism is actually about, to help students decide if it’s helpful to their specific research - the point isn’t to skip out on reading the actual article!

I'm really surprised to see Ruby promoting an app/program that is basically encouraging students to cut corners and get somthing else to do all the hard work for them...
@@szdigi research is the stage that SHOULD take longest - you need to make sure you truly understand the material, and think through it to formulate your own views. You can only do that by spending time with it.
@@achilleus9918 but if students choose to use a service like Genei and end up producing a poor paper because of it (because they weren’t taking the time to really try and comprehend the material for themselves), then that’s on them to deal with? I think if students want to use Genei, why shouldn’t they? Go for it :) if they’re using it as a genuine study tool to help them learn more and develop their understanding, then they’re doing the work either way.

How interesting! I'd love to read your dissertation, Ruby! :)
As a more experienced researcher I would advise against using any kind of apps or platform that promise to do the work for you. You can end up misunderstanding content if the App doesn't do its job properly or you can even unintentionally plagiarise and fail your essays. I love technology, but you still gotta do the work. Letting AI do the work for you is NOT research. It's laziness and wanting things to be easy. You'll learn nothing from this
I agree - though maybe it's not laziness so much as wanting to be efficient with your time, there are some things (like research) that simply cannot be efficient: you HAVE to take your time with your sources and materials to truly understand them. I say this as a PhD student.
@@achilleus9918 indeed. you can still skim-read a paper to check if it is useful or what parts are useful, but you shouldn't let a programme do it for you. this way you might miss the important parts and might misunderstand the purpose or conclusion of the paper
I learnt this the hard way! same thing with book summaries etc- only use them as a starting point. Be CAREFUL and always read AT LEAST the first page and the last page of an article as well as the abstract, even if you are short on time. if it’s an academic book read at least one chapter closely.
Hi Ruby, what do you intend to do after you graduate. Will you do a masters? Im on my second masters now and I am considering a phd, would be interested in hearing your future plans :)
I'm planning on doing a masters, yes! But I'm taking a year out first because I think it will be good for me to be out of the academic space for a little while :) Two masters! That's so cool! Seconding Millie's question, what are they in? And that's so exciting about the phd!!
@@RubyGranger8 That sounds great! A year out will be good for you, I also took a year out after my undergrad. My MSc was in marketing but my main research interest for my Phd is religion and gender so I have moved to the arts and I am now currently doing my MA in Theology, I am loving it :). I love your videos by the way Ruby they always help to motivate me to stay focused and get through all my reading ❤️
Hi, Ruby! we want to share about one book:- "KAYAN KOLLYN- The spiral of the ellmott and messenger of the secret.' Which can help in finding the real valuables of life. You must find it interesting! And your followers will find information about a good book.
Ruby, please 🙏 use your platform to raise awareness on what is currently happening in Ukraine. 🇺🇦 There is a massive refugee crisis, innocent Ukrainians getting killed, their homes are getting destroyed. You could use your platform to educate your viewers and encourage them to help.
so much of it is just about enjoyment. I really enjoy what I'm studying and that makes all of the difference. I think the trick to focused work is not treating it as "work" but as something you genuinely like to do. Everything can be interesting (okay, maybe not everything, but a lot of things) and we should try and channel that :)x
@@RubyGranger8 You’re right! I’ve noticed that when I’m the most immersed in a task is when I’m enjoying the subject or see any “purpose” in it. What do you intend on doing after graduation? Do aim to work with academics or other options? Your channel is a huge inspiration! Greeting from Brazil😘
@@RubyGranger8 I found plot the development to be a bit drawn out and the tone seemed quite dark, but there were some enjoyable moments such as the car chase.
Such a shame you´re promoting things that make you read less rather than more, and summaries by "people" who may or may not be students, leading us down the path to yet more ignorance and lazy reliance on others to do the hard work for us.
it's literally the opposite of research and academia. I'm afraid it won't take long until young people can no longer read or think for themselves and turn to mindless zombies
@@RubyGranger8 ah okay, because you said you read a book from 1998 that was essentially the first one to define gift giving, which could not have been Mauss
The 1998 book applies Mauss’s thinking (which was very based in ancient history) to the modern world - extending it past the academic sphere and showing why this is important in every day life :) I would say the 1998 book is the first to properly define gift giving, just because gifts are (by nature) so based in relationships and sociology. So it seems like you need that aspect to really call it gift giving. If you know what I mean? xx
@@RubyGranger8 I do t know what you mean but I argue that you are wrong by saying it hasn't been defined until 1998. It's not only Mauss, but also Kopytoff and Appadurai and many others who worked on gift giving, value, Kula and the sociology of things. If I were you I would leave that part out of your thesis if you don't have time to go into the subject
We used to have cats actually and I always would have said I was a cat person, but I think it's impossible not to become a dog person when you have a dog ;) Having said that though, I can imagine having a cat when I move out:) x

Wow 2 masters and a phd! What do u study?
I'm planning on doing a masters, yes! But I'm taking a year out first because I think it will be good for me to be out of the academic space for a little while :)
Two masters!
@@RubyGranger8 what’s your master’s going to be in?
Ruby I would like to speak a bit on Ukraine crisis.. As a student how do you think. The actual education can't turn back to the burning crisis.
Hi, Ruby!
we want to share about one book:-
"KAYAN KOLLYN- The spiral of the ellmott and messenger of the secret.'
A fiction book of adventure, fantasy, and scientific exploration with esoteric mystery, within a new FICTIONAL world- and it is called ATOULS WORLD. Which can help in finding the real valuables of life.
You must find it interesting! And your followers will find information about a good book.
i love your video so much
Thank you 💕
Yes, definitely don’t share specifics about your research if you plan to publish or stay in academia!
sis , you look so beautyful💟💟💟
Ruby, please 🙏 use your platform to raise awareness on what is currently happening in Ukraine. 🇺🇦 There is a massive refugee crisis, innocent Ukrainians getting killed, their homes are getting destroyed.
You could use your platform to educate your viewers and encourage them to help.
How do you stay focused during such a long time with demanding tasks?
so much of it is just about enjoyment.
Greeting from Brazil😘
your videos inspire me to organise my life x
When I read 'Genei ad' I literally thought it was something in latin 😂😂😂

Hi
Hello!
Did you see the recent batman film?
No I haven't - I'm not a big fan of superhero films, I've got to say! Did you enjoy it?
@@RubyGranger8 I found plot the development to be a bit drawn out and the tone seemed quite dark, but there were some enjoyable moments such as the car chase.
Such a shame you´re promoting things that make you read less rather than more, and summaries by "people" who may or may not be students, leading us down the path to yet more ignorance and lazy reliance on others to do the hard work for us.
it's literally the opposite of research and academia. I'm afraid it won't take long until young people can no longer read or think for themselves and turn to mindless zombies
Far too busy making money and living in her twee fantasy world to worry about such things.
If you don't wanna use it just don't do it and shut up
3:44 anyone knows what that tablet thing is called?
ReMarkable 2 :)
If you do anything on gift giving you have to read Marcel Mauss' "Le Don"
I have done! :)
@@RubyGranger8 ah okay, because you said you read a book from 1998 that was essentially the first one to define gift giving, which could not have been Mauss
Also, 1998 is not that long ago.
Ruby I think you could be so much a Cat Person, why you don't own one? XD (I don't remember to have seen so)
We used to have cats actually and I always would have said I was a cat person, but I think it's impossible not to become a dog person when you have a dog ;)
Having said that though, I can imagine having a cat when I move out:) x
Why don't you listen about it , that l want you to make Harry potter video
