This may be a comment that some will dislike. I have been on the receiving end of a meal due to being in a time of desperate need. The last thing I could manage to do was wash and return a pan to the giver.
I know its hard to use aluminum pans all the time but for me I still periodically buy them for gifting meals now that i can be on that side. It just takes away any excess stress from the recipient. Great video and love the meal mission! ❤

Maybe if the person is in financial need, they could also use the dish themselves later.

I have been making meals for folks since April of 2020. I use quart canning jars for soups, stews, etc. My husband had collected a ridiculous amount of Pyrex casserole dishes at yard sales over the years. I never knew why until God laid it on my heart to cook for people. There’s no harm in asking for your dishes/jars back. If this is through church perhaps they would allow you a return area for your dishes. Ask around, people might have extra casserole dishes. Bless you for your ministry.

My husband reminded me that I use a lot of glass pie dishes too. Quiche, egg bakes and I make one serving dinners in them. If that makes any sense.

Kelsey, I think I would still use aluminum pans for your ministry, I would use the Costco/Sam's Club pans being of better quality and avoid the Dollar Tree aluminum pans. They look and feel too thin and flimsy. Glass can be heavier especially with a freezer meal and if not properly thawed before baking, can shatter. I'm just thinking of older folks or disabled with strength and mobility issues especially.

I freeze things in my pans, pop them out and freeze in a reusable bag or baggy or wrapped in saran, etc. Another thing we do is buy up super cheap pans at thrift stores and they can be given freely. Now people just give them to us to move along!

When I take meals to people I do use aluminum pans with parchment paper lining it. It has worked well with soups, casseroles, and meats.

I live in Pittsburgh now so it's always so fun for me to hear about and see the things from my hometown area! We used to go to the Amish store all the time when I was a kid. If we were lucky we got chocolate milk from the giant refrigerator and peacock feathers from the entrance. I still love going when I visit home. Thanks for being such a cool creator!

I really enjoyed this video! You are so blessed to have close access to the Mennonite and Amish stores. I think I could spend days in that Mennonite store you showed I love that! The closest near me is about 2 hours away and it's Amish, so there is just not a way to justify driving that far because I wouldn't save any money. On that note they do have things I can't get at my local stores so I do love going when I can. God bless y'all, and it's good to see that you are feeling so much better 💞 Thank you for sharing!

For options to give away food... look at thrift stores or rummage sales for casserole dishes people sell for cheap. Then when you give the food, you can also let them have the dish as well.

A tip for going to Costco is to make a list with the unit price for items you are looking for so you can compare. Not everything is cheaper at Costco but sometime it is better quality and worth the extra cost.

We have thrift stores that will have a ton of casserole dishes for a buck or two... that is as cheap as aluminum.. then they can pass them along or keep them. Have you tried Azure standard for organic foods? I became a drop coordinator last year after buying for a couple years and love them. I am also gf and tons of options. I'm so glad to see people use Redmond salt... I live "nearish" to them and my hub delivers stuff to them almost weekly and I'll go on that long drive with him. Great, great company. We have NO amish stores near us... you are so lucky.

Foil, Plastic, Cardboard, Styrofoam, Aluminum... Unless you buy Glass Dishes from the Thrift Stores, the options for sustainable/safe TakeOut containers may be limited...especially if one needs to have it be leak proof, and okay in the freezer... I think just go with the Aluminum Pans...because the meals are for someone in need - at the moment - the meal will probably get eaten within the week or so anyways...as they need the meal now, so I wouldn't worry too much about it... I think the Receiver of the food gift, will just be so happy they don't have to cook, and won't be worried about the container(s) and that whole conversation. You are so very kind to make meals for people at your church...they will be muchly appreciated, I am sure!

I often make freezer meals for ourselves and others. Over the last week I have made a number of freezer meals for a family in need. I purchased aluminum pans at Ocean State Job lot (not sure if you have one there). I freezer the meals in them, cover with aluminum foil then plastic wrap to put in freezer. When I make crock pot meals I put that in plastic freezer bags.

Thank you for the store suggestions. I live in northern MD, just 2 miles south of Stewartstown but I do almost all shopping in PA. I'm planning a day trip to those 2 Amish stores. We do have an Azure drop-off in Shrewsbury, but yes, it would be quite a hike for you. You could always do one large annual Azure order, perhaps that would be worth the trip. The only problem with that is our delivery date/time is often rescheduled due to either increased orders or truck mechanical problems, so you need a very flexible schedule. As far as disposable pans, there is a restaurant store in Lancaster, The Restaurant Store. You can buy pans by the case. Not sure if they would be cheaper than Costco but it is worth comparing. Take care.

Perhaps you could make the meal in your glass pan lined with parchment, freeze it, and then remove the frozen meal and seal it. Then the recipient could reheat it in their own baking dish or cookie sheet. It might limit the meals you can make, but maybe not. Stews and soups could be flash frozen in smaller servings as well and reheated. I may take my own advice, as I also try to be prepared to bless others with a frozen meal when the need arises. :)

I make meals for my son and grandkids. When I do soup, stews etc I put them in large freezer bags, because I know he has a big pot. But when I do casseroles I have to put them in aluminum pans because he doesn't own any casserole dishes. I really don't like using aluminum pans either.

Becky from Acre Homestead finds her glass dishes for freezer meals at thrift stores. Could your church invest in some and once the meal is done and dish is washed the family leaves them at church in a specific location for you to reuse?

Thats a thought. I did look at my Goodwill and didn't find anything. I may have to build that up and use aluminum until I have enough. Thank you!

She also freezes a lot of meals in gallon Ziploc bags (frozen flat on a sheet tray)... I could see that as a possible option as long as it's not a layered recipe 🤔. (I'm so sorry I've edited this reply like 5 times because I can't seem to tag today 🤦)

If I use aluminum I always line with parchment so there's no leeching. I visit Mennonite stores in my area. Love them but none of them have the homeopathic meds. Would you be able to tell where they are? I use to visit one when I lived in Michigan but where I am now I don't know of any in my area.

    • @cynthiafisher9907

That might be wishful thinking about the aluminum not leaching with parchment. You might want to research that.

Instead of the aluminum pans for casseroles, I buy the PYREX (all caps) borosilicate glass, which has thermal expansion. The newer pyrex. (lowercase letters.) is a different type of glass and not as good. I buy them at the thrift store which I find cheaper than the aluminum ones. Also, batteries Costco Kirkland brand do not seem to last as long. In addition, I store all my batteries in the refrigerator which last for years.

Thank you for all these tips! I'm going to try and source some at the thrift, but in the past have not had success. They are pretty lame around here lol. I may have to resort to aluminum at first while I build up supply. Thanks for hanging out today! ❤
