Thanks to Art Clokey and Gumby, they made me appreciate Native American history. Cool that even for 1950 standards, it showed that we can learn so much from others and each other's culture.
For the most part, this is pretty accurate in Hopi culture and religion. Even though I’m not Hopi, I am a southwestern Native American (Navajo, Pima, Jicarilla Apache). Only thing is that Hopis don’t dress like the little boy lol. But the research done for this episode is amazing.
@Chi Ezike I remember reading somewhere that even though he was white, Art Clokey's family heritage has some Native American roots. This is probably why we get such a positive Native American portrayal here.
@@ZakWolf a lot of "white" looking Americans actually do have Native ancestry, as many tribes mixed with other races, and such. My grandma was born on a Native reservation.
@@beauwalker9820 Yep. At my college, we have a professor who appears "white" but is also of Native American ancestry, and so he runs the Indigenous-related classes and events. He's pretty cool.
Been looking for this episode for years haha. Kinda ironic its posted on my birthday. I got a gumby tape for my birthday as a kid. This was one of the episodes.
AlmightyToonGod Yeah, I think you're right there. They've said that sand doubles really well for rushing water effects when working with miniature sets like this.
My mom's been watching the old horror soap opera "Dark Shadows," and it frequently uses the same thunderclap stock sound effects this episode used. Though to be fair, I've also heard these thunder sound effects on "Rocky and Bullwinkle," and one of them used to frequently be used with The Count on "Sesame Street" in the 70s.
Theres only two things wrong with this episode is that the song you hear at 6:05 is actually a song from the Navajos not hopi and yeah the kachinas roles aren't right but I like this episode
The Hope and Crosby of Gmby..Gumby was basically the good side (non-scandal) of BHing, Pokey had the rather fearful, bragging persona of a Bob Hope..that became his persona..love that horse.
There is where Pokey started to become a complainer....kind of like the old Paramount Studios Bob Hope, (Pokey), Bing Crosby (Gumby) Road flicks of the 1940s.
@@user-ul3lx2sl1q You must either be a boomer who grew up in the 50s or 60s or had grown up in the 80s because Gumby has yet to make a comeback since his theatrical film, bombed back in 1995. The last thing we got from Gumby was some Game Boy Advance game.
I’m not only a boomer who grew up in the 60’s, I’m an AUTISTIC boomer, and SpongeBob represents change to me, and I hate change. SpongeBob also looks ugly as sin to me; I can’t bear to look at him. He’s hideous! I hate invertebrates! And I find pokey cute.
Well, if the mean goat hadn’t physically assaulted poor pokey, then the whipper kachina wouldn’t have had to give the goat a taste of its own medicine! I’ve always loved pokey!
MY little pony, my little pony, got his ass kicked by that goat..My Pokey Pony my pokey pony..then after that we saw the goat just gloat (sung to My Little Pony).
As watchably awful as this is, it's also significantly less racist than I was afraid it'd be. Not that I'd be able to begin to tell if any of the culture depicted is accurate.

Nick Salazar well good, Art Clokey was always a fair man. He choose Gumby to be green because it was a racially neutral color.

This was my favorite episode growing up.
Gumby explains how stalagmites work and pokeys just like "oh"
Gumby remains one of the sweeter memories of childhood.
i'm addicted to Gumby!
It's a gateway animation.
My favorite Gumby cartoon.

Clokey was such a genius. RIP
One of my favorite epiodes!😄😁
9:55 Whoa there, Pokey!😳 Don't get too "excited" to see the Corn Maiden spirit!
;)
4:54-5:01 that little part of the natives singing was used three times in Gumby the movie
These Gumby Cartoons from the late 1950's hold up today. Just like the original 39 Honeymooners episodes. Classics never go out of style.
One of my favorite gumby cartoons!up to now I still remember the Indian chantings and sounds.my other favorite is "moon trip"!love the toy vehicles!
It reminds me of Knott's Berry Farm's beloved train ride (Buena Park, Orange County, Southern Claif.)
I love Gumby so much he's funny
the waterfall is actually sand.

I think it's rice. :)
Pause a few frames at 11:48 Pokey lost his lower jaw then gets it back in the next frame.
Wow that was amazing.
love the sign pointing to rain spirits . :)

THIS EPISODE SCARED THE HECK OUT OF ME WHEN I WAS A KID.
I remember that goat startled the #!@$ otta me the 1st time I watched gumby as a youngster
The scene at 8:24 with the rain spirit is just how I remembered as a kid 25+ years ago.
Not sure why I remember it maybe it scared me back then?
Same for me haha. I'm 33 and this episode had some creepy parts for a 7 year old!
Oh my gosh! I haven't seen this since I was little!
I remember I was scared of the Americans in the sky as a kid.
I remember this episode :)
Look at pokey's face at 9:13!!!! So creepy!!!

Gumby's voice is different every time I hear him talk!
He had 4 different actors voicing him.
I love all the gumby animations I'm an animation maker myself 😀
This is very old 😭
Singing rain sprit

I'm here because my mom told my older brother he look like Gumby 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
its wierd that in the pool scene, the jumping is animated, but the splash is live action

8:32 - "That ghost sure gets me hard."
ElNingyou "That goat sure hit me hard" is the correct quote
Darn, I hear it now. Oh well, MINE'S BETTER.
I consider this the precursor to Spongebob!

What's up at 11:50?
Princess kachina
This is very acurrate to hopi tradion
Im part hopi

Do they always use different voices?
There were 4 different actors voicing Gumby. Pokey was voiced by the creator, Art Clokey.
i do not recall pokey's personality as this thuogh my memory is excellent and pokey is more horse like than stupid basura...
Don't they know spanking hurts self esteem. Poor little goat!

the wise children appreciate the option for native connections... though this is laced with oddity of other people... aho!
If the indein nose what a rain sperit looks like then why did he say to gomby if he's a rain sperit 🤔
ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU SEE POKEY LITE A FAT JOINT ...... I WILL SHOW YOU SOME RAIN SPIRITS
Pokey is made of LSD.
Hahaha he beats the goat
Pokey is very pessimistic.
I am a full Pueblo Indian and this is not how it works
死Poppet
Yep, gumbey needs more clay, or adobe not sure witch
Thank you, Eddie Murphy
MAAAAAAAAAAAAA! MAAAAAAAAAAAA!
THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE THE INDIAN STONED
why does the native american talk like he can't speak English? I love gumby but this is a really problematic episode..
smpratt90 maybe he was raised speaking his native tongue and (for whatever reason) only was taught English as an afterthought
What's the matter, even 1960 stuff isn't PC enough? Let's write our senators and ban gumbey for good
You being triggered by a 60s show is problematic to human intelligience.
This episode don’t fly well in 2019.

According to some people here, it's surprisingly accurate to a degree. Doesn't feel that offensive.
