- In recent days, some people have found that certain places in China have started spot-checking the phones and computers of inbound travelers. According to a report by the South Korean news agency Yonhap on May 10th, a Hong Kong tourist at Shanghai airport was asked by officials to check their phone and even opened the messaging app WeChat to check their conversation history. And this situation is not isolated.

I have deleted my Wechat and ALL other Chinese apps from my phone. I will not travel to China and will avoid stops at the airport in Hong Kong just to make sure.
I would start picking flights that either lay over in Japan or Malaysia and avoid China and Hongkong for good measure!

My friend in China posted something in a WeChat group recently how everything falls apart in China. Next day he had two police officers at his door.

I will never going to have a layover in China ever again. Had it once in 2018 during my family vacation to Thailand and it's such a hassle.
First, you have to go through some sort of passport control, fingerprints, and face screen - doing it by yourself.
Second, have to go through security check again.
And, we are just transit (layover) through Shanghai Pudong airport

Transiting via Hongkong is also subjected to passport check, even if you have connecting flight to other countries. So beware!

Another aspect is the growing interest from china in african countries raw materials where access usually is acheived with empty promises of investments in infrastructure and bribes. There are quite a few places I would not consider going to, even if the trip were completely free. Or indeed, if I were being paid! China is one of these places. Because of the horrendous potential danger of being poisoned by fake food, the lack of Rule-Of-Law, and lack of respect for foreigners.

I went to China through Hong Kong port multiple times few months ago. I have no problem.
Now I can get behind having someone turn on/off their electronics and demonstrate that they do what one would expect it to do (i.e. a camera can take a picture, a laptop functions as one would expect, ect...) given that it is limited to a demo as opposed to an invasion of privacy as a part of a security screen with public transportation like flying and train rides... sadly we all know it'll wind up being abused by people in positions of authority.
I will never go to China. It is not worth the trouble.
