Just got me a 2013 Srt challenger with 50000 miles and I had a feeling the transmission needs a oil change I can feel it when shifting and when it’s in neutral good thing I haven’t really got on it thanks for this video will go with this brand of transmission oil keep up the good work buddy
My new 2018 Dodge challenger RT blacktop edition in destroyer grey shifts just fine from the factory ,and I've been shifting manuals for 40 years ,,,all kinds , so evidently, they've done something different as in the type of fluid they use present day, however , very informative vid on the fluid change. I've drove mustangs for years, but I have to admit this new Challenger is one fine car active exhaust sounds great ,the ride ,the room .. The Stang's I've owned ,and all GT's with manuals do not compare . The big muscle car's roll on . Glad they're back ..........Drive safe ......
In 2016 Dodge had Tremec change the syncros in the T6060 used in all Challengers. Prior to 2016 they would wear prematurely causing the clunky shift between 1 and 2, sometimes 2 and 3. Fluid seemed to be the only factor in fixing (masking) the issue other than a full teardown of the transmission. There is a service bulletin on the issue on ChallengerForums.net.
Thanks for this. Got a challenger a month ago brand new with 4 miles and there is still a tiny catch sometimes going into 2nd. Barton shifter made a huge difference but I'm going to do a fluid change on it now.
That is awesome man, thanks very much for the video. Great to see the difference from an oil change. I'm a long time Royal Purple fan. I was about to buy some of that Redline D4 ATF so thank goodness I saw your video. Royal Purple Synchromax is out at my shop but they've still got Max ATF so I'll give that a try instead.
Thanks so much for this, I had trouble finding the drain plug despite finding the fill. Same transmission in a 2010 Camaro SS. One thing I'd have added in that you didn't mention was that the plugs are a square drive. It should be pretty obvious but for those who may be intimidated by seeing a square drive for the first time, just point out that the drive on a 1/2in ratchet fits in there perfectly (correct me if I'm wrong). Oh, and don't feel too bad about putting the wrong fluid in - everyone I know (including mechanics) thought I fucked up by getting ATF for a manual transmission, but trust me I did 10 forum searches on camaro5 just to verify what I was getting...
It wasn't just the ATF... it was the wrong grade of ATF. It absolutely needs to be ATF +4 Compatible or it won't jive with the syncros in the Dodge version. So dumb. It's a 3/8ths drive, not 1/2 inch btw, only off by an 1/8th inch.. haha. Glad this helped you out! Thanks for commenting!
Yup just did it yesterday. My tr6060 in the Camaro wants ATF Mercon III. This was very easy compared to my differential fluid, but pumping the stuff up into the fill cap took forever! My arms got very tired. But other than a connector in front of the fill plug, nothing was really in my way. My crossmember, oddly enough, was completely out of the path of the drain plug.
@@joeyofblades7 years later…. I hope you’ve found out that GM’s Tremec TR-6060’s call for Dexron III from the assembly line. Tremec themselves formulated their own manual trans fluid, which is closer to GL-4 (non-corrosive, yellow metal safe) 75w-80 gear oil. Some people don’t wanna mix gear oil, but it usually has the right properties for all TR-6060 variants. Fully synthetic ATF, like Dexron IV/Mercon LV, I heard can cause the synchros to slip, unlike semi-synthetic Dex III/Merc V fluid.
@@isnowyazn Oh yeah, I did realize, I was saying that some people thought I was wrong and I verified it through several sources. I put royal purple max ATF in my tr6060 hellcat: ua-cam.com/video/f6n2AZ-sDko/v-deo.html I always do research before hand in forums and Facebook groups plus what the owners manual says. 4 years and 10k miles later (65k miles total), trans is still working great. Didn't hear about tremec making their own fluid but I'll look into it for next time, thanks.
I have a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS manual coupe, which I believe was a late 2009-spec release VIN. The early Tremec TR-6060 6-spd manuals in these tended to have horrible issues when driven hard and/or for track conditions. I’ve researched that they used PAPER material inside of their synchronizer rings; that’s right - PAPER. Wow. I’ve been pretty paranoid with the type of ATF or light gear oil that GM and/or Tremec have specified, for optimal operation, of course. I guess it’s specific per make and what they choose Tremec to put in their manual trannies. GM’s Tremec TR-6060’s call for Dexron III from the assembly line. Fully synthetic ATF, like Dexron IV/Mercon LV, I heard can cause the synchros to slip, unlike semi-synthetic Dex III/Merc V fluid. I saw a bunch of pre-2006 Dex/Merc ATF that also met ATF+4 specifications, so I guess some of them only have ATF+3 properties. I was in between running a mix of Amsoil Synchromesh and Royal Purple Synchromax at first. I’m now personally running a mix of GM Synchromesh (friction modified formula) and whatever ATF+4 that is available.
Mine has been getting worse and worse, love the car but had to park everywhere with the emergency brake on. Hopefully this will fix my catches between gears and it having to be pulled out of gear forcefully with the clutch pushed in fully. Thank you
I'm glad you posted this. I was going to use D4 in mine, too (I know, bad idea, should be careful with forum advice. won't do it now). Anyway, I don't have a lift so I'll be on my back... you think a ramp made out of heavy aluminum foil might work to funnel off the fluid without removing the crossmember? Or should I just break out a transmission jack and do it properly? (Also, FYI, after my OEM stick broke... not shifter, just the stick, after about 50000 miles... I replaced the whole shifter with a unit from Barton. It was SOOO worth the price. And for as much as the OEM shifterr's crap design pissed me off, the access to it for replacement restored a lot of my faith in FCA's engineers. I took my time and I was still done in about an hour. Big credit to Barton's how-to video, too.)
Go straight for Redline or Royal Purple... depends on the transmission honestly, I've read different variants of the Tremec like different brands more than others.
So i have a tr6060 of a camaro goin in my chevy obs what oil should i put in? Rp max atf of different since i read on a comment here mopar n chevy like different oil
planning to get 5 gallons of Max ATF for a 4R100 transmission 125k miles and never had anything done to the transmission so it really needs it also planning to get Royal Purple 75W140 for the diff it had a 3.55LS

Going to change mine today. I only have 48,000 mile and noise in 3 rd and hard shift into 4 th. New transmission over $7000. And $2500 form a used one with 90,000 miles. Hope this works. Love my 2009 srt 8 but very disappointed in the 6 speed transmission
I have a 12' SRT 6 speed and I think I have the same problem you had. I bought the car with 40k miles and just hit 50k miles yesterday. It is starting to feel a lil harder to shift and from 3rd gear to 4th gear it doesn't always catch and kinda makes a lil grind sound in WOT. I think I need to flush my fluid out cause who knows when the last guy did it if he ever did 🤔 the SRT and R/T both have the same transmission correct?

Mopar. I'm using Pennzoil Syncromesh and it like that. However I'm changing the Transmission to Amsoil. I've been using Amsoil for years in my Bikes and love it. So I switched the Challenger to Amsoil instead of Pennzoil. The speed shop I talked to also recomended Amsoil for the Tremec.

Does Royal Purple have a transmission fluid for the Dodge Charger 8 speed transmission ?
No clue, check the manual on the type of fluid it should take. My guess is they do.
