I used to be a 42/43 mm guy. Especially for the divers. However, the older I get the more I appreciate smaller, dare I say classic sized watches. Great overview Ash.
Last year I bought a Citizen 'Challenge Diver' in titanium and I can see the appeal of the metal, as it's darker than steel and more discrete and comfortable. My Citizen is the black dial variant with the bracelet from the blue dial model, that I bought directly from Citizen UK as a part. I honestly prefer it as a daily wearer to other watches I've bought costing many times more.
There's an interesting back story to a similar watch you have purchased. An original iteration of the Challenge Diver was found washed up on a Sydney beach in Australia in 1983 at a location called Long Reef. The watch had barnacles growing on it but when shook it continued to work. The finder sent it in to Citizen who confirmed the watch was a model manufactured in 1977. Not sure how long it was underwater before it had washed ashore but what a testament to great quality. Ironically, I live 10 minutes away from the beach the watch was found.

Yachtmaster 42mm titanium is an extremely expensive validation of the Pelagos 42mm. Except with 400m less water resistance than the Pelagos, also lacking the divers clasp and the Pelagos includes the rubber strap as well. All for 1/3 the price……
The 54 is lovely and although I’m 6”3 with a 7.5 inch wrist I’m sure my eye would tune into the size quickly . My reservations are that if I were to wear a 37 mm diver regularly does watches like my sub seamaster etc look huge on wrist and will it make me feel unsettled . Such ridiculous first world problems but don’t wish to bring in anything that may leave me conflicted.
I'd suggest for you the new 40mm Explorer or 42mm titanium Yachtmaster. However, seeming both will be unobtainable, you could consider a 42mm Pelagos. Which has better water resistance than any Sub or Yachty. Has a fantastic lumed ceramic bezel which is missing on the Yachtmaster. Also has a better clasp. And a third of the price of the Rolex equivalent. And most importantly, it's available.
I want a do it all watch. I like the explorer 1 steel 36 due to my wrist size. But with the new Tudor 36 am confused. I love my watches with arabica numerals though. Or perhaps NOMOS club 37mm size. Please give your advice.
Interesting thoughts - well done. in reality all great watches. But a couple of VC's and JLC's were my standouts. Showed my wife the OP bubble dial watch and she hated it and said what have Rolex done - thought is cheapens the the brand. Also the full gold Rolex GMT is very nice.
I tried on the 54 as well and it was the best looking and wearing diver I have ever worn on my 6.5 in wrist. But like you, I already have a 14060m that would be redundant. But that tudor is a home run. Also looking forward to trying on one of the new BB36s, since I am in search of a daily.
The Rolex will hold it's value. The BB54 will not. Advise to keep your Sub. It will be harder to replace. The current trend for smaller watches may be a trend just like the big watch trend before.
Ash, you might not give Gerald Genta enough credit, because he was behind classics like Omega's Constellation, Patek's Golden Ellipse and Cartier's Pasha to name a few. My pick for Reverso would be the steel chrono, pricey, very traditional on the front and contemporary on the backside, an engineering marvel. Fantasy watch this year would be the Platona for me.
I agree with Ash. I've never liked Genta design. All those watches you mentioned are dated. I wouldn't wear any of them. Most people who like the Nautilus & Royal Oak are victims of social media hype. People make comments about Rolex collectors being nothing more than wealthy people with no sense of style; that they just bought a Rolex for status. I think this applies more so to Genta collectors. At least Rolex is a bonafide sports tool watch with a lot of accolades and achievements throughout history and human endeavours. Genta's claim to fame is designing the World's most expensive steel 'sports' watch on the back of a napkin in 15 minutes, that can't even swim 30 metres. The comeback from fans of Genta is that it's hand made with exquisite finishing. However, I don't care if the watch is polished with the pubic hairs of a cashmere goat by virgin supermodels. I'm sick of them being called sports watches & I think the ridiculous price of a steel watch is only for brainwashed suckers of marketing hype. Go back to the 1970s. Wear your Genta watch, big hair and flares.😂
@@SuperRamenman I agree that Rolex has a lot of history as a tool watch (the 5513 I've had from new spent quite a bit of time under 8' of ice in the Arctic). However, IMO they stoped being tool watches when Rolex started using applied markers on the dial and turned them into jewellery. I think it's obvious to everyone that they are status symbols these days. BTW, I have no love for the Royal Oaks or Nautilus.
Ash. Enjoyed your video this morning with my breakfast as usual. I am a very big fan they were verso. Great-looking watch in a great history. I recently purchased a field watch from Cincinnati watch company. I was looking at the Hamilton field watch but this one is far superior as it has a screw down crown 150 m water resistant . Swiss movement and regulated in five positions by the professional watch maker here in my home town. It keeps excellent time and looks good on the wrist. Cheers Ron
I am in the exact same position as you are regarding the BB54 vs Rolex sub… it does seem like almost the right decision to sell the sub to get the BB54 with lots of money to spare on other stuff (a new Cartier? 🙃)
Hi Ash, not to change the subject, but were there any new pocket watch releases? Also, your attire seems to suggest pocket watch wear when appropriate to do so. What do you think, and can you do a show on them, how to wear them? They are the true value watches.
Reverso deserves to be top on your list! Rolex gravitas or a better fit on the wrist? Will be interesting to follow your thought process. Hard to imagine you would sell the Sub that has been part of your core collection. Maybe selling your Tudor GMT for the 54? Doesn't seem to get a lot of wrist time considering other GMTs you own. Thanks for the video!
Well, my preferred brand is Benson & Clegg and I have a beautiful set of their links in gold. They are eyewateringly expensive, but pure, unadulterated class. Got mine as the only bidder at an Ebay auction for £8. bensonandclegg.com/collections/cufflinks
You might consider buying the Tudor. Selling your Submariner, pocket the difference and you will be that much closer to owning a new JLC Reverso. The Reverso is somewhat pricey, so the Sub sale will lighten the burden just a bit.
Nice review. I have a 41mm Sub Date and a Pelagos 39 titanium and the Pelagos 39 is noticeably more comfortable and fits better on my 6.5 inch / 165mm wrist. I still wear the sub day to day bc I use the date a lot, but if a Pelagos 39 date came out, it could knock the sub out of my rotation.
I use to own the Pelagos LHD which had the roulette date wheel. Everything I loved about that watch. It was almost perfect, except the height and size. I sold it to fund a Rolex purchase. When they shrunk the Pelagos to 39mm it lost a lot of it's DNA character. Was essentially a titanium Black Bay. Still I like it but I think Tudor will improve on it. I'll wait until the next iteration is released. I can testify that a Rolex executive wears the Pelagos LHD with his birth date as the MN number on the caseback. I met him at a cocktail party. Surprisingly he wasn't wearing a Rolex.
@@SuperRamenman if they come out with a blue dial (preferably keeping the black bezel for color contrast like the Batman) with a well designed date function, that's the end game for me.
A blue dial version is inevitable. BUT there is no end game in this hobby. I thought the Speedmaster and Pelagos LHD was my end game. One watch each for sky and sea and everything in between. I ended selling both and bought an Explorer II, but it didn't satisfy my Rolex itch, so I bought a no-date Sub. Then wanted to keep low key, so I bought an Explorer, then a Black Bay, then a Sea-Dweller, then a two tone Bluesy Sub. When I win the Powerball I’ll buy the IWC. That peacock blue dial is stunning. (As is your tie, btw.) I’m surprised that more watchmakers don’t go for titanium. It’s more subtle than steel and hence more suitable for semi-formal wear, and a LOT lighter, which is a definite advantage on a big watch. (Years ago Omega offered a titanium option on the “Goldeneye” diver. They should have kept it.) I’ve got a titanium rice-pellet bracelet on my trusty little Skagen, and I love it. I quite enjoyed this recap and agree on your sentiments regarding each one’s appeal. The issue with Rolex of course remains their unobtainable status so I’d nix them off the list, playful dial or not, no one watching this is walking out from the AD with one anytime soon. I think you should have considered the stunningly beautiful Grand Seiko Triple Time Zone Spring Drive SBGE295. At $6,200 US, the features, color, design are remarkable.
