Just randomly had one of your videos on my you tube feed? Anyway I have a big back catalogue to catch up on! My plan is to retire in China, Guangzhou to be precise. I already have an apartment in one of the outer suburbs and will spend the next few years furnishing it and learning the area and language. Thank you for your insights it has made me more determined than ever to retire there. Forgot to say, Im in the UK and china has always fascinated me.
Thanks for stumbling across my vids and commenting too. Regarding your place, it will take 6 months fixing it up, not a few years. All the very best. Have a drink when you're here.
Some people who obviously never been to China or living in China was claiming $2k RMB is not enough to live a decent life in China…dud! Thanks for the video as always!
I have serious doubts that this would be enough, depending on what you consider a decent life to be, and of course this would be for a single person, no kids and probably no pets. And yes I’ve been to China, just got back from living in our apartment there for 3 months.
Most of these people don't even understand what purchasing power even means ! They only understand an quantitative numerical number, but anything more than that their little minds simply cannot comprehend !
For any place, the single most important deciding factor is LOCATION. All the rest are secondary. For that central location with all the amenities at the door step, the price is unbeatable. In Amsterdam, for instance, such a fully furnished studio in a good central location, minimum 1700 euro and you'd be very very lucky to get one.
Hey Tony, perhaps you can get one of them broom/mop holders. It will make that space you have there a lot neater. Just a suggestion. And you're right about the mattress. We do like harder mattresses. They're good for the back.
This simple formula is all that you need to measure purchasing power. Lets say you make the typical $1200/week in the west if that much divided by the cost of a loaf of bread and see how many loaves of bread you can buy after lowest percentage of taxes. So $1200.00 - 22% taxes = $936.00 divided by the cost of a loaf of bread which is around $4.25 these days. $936.00/$4.25= 220 buys you only 220 loaves of bread. Back in the early 70's a $70.00 weekly salary can buy you 1000 loaves of bread at $0.07/loaf. So basically your wages have not gone up or kept up with inflation and in fact decreased in purchasing power more than 5 folds !

I otherwise feel aligned with this country and the people are nice. Their nature is non aggressive and I do appreciate that. Life here is very affordable and the quality of life is excellent.

This is Zhaoqing, a very small city that is very cheap, where an apartment usually sells for only $30,000 to $40,000 USD total and no property taxes. There are over 600 small cities in China. China's housing bubble is basically only concentrated in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Suzhou.
One thing I noticed is that flat screen TVs is at the correct height in most Chinese homes. Yours is a little too low, needs to be around 42" from the ground to the center of the screen. Most homes in Europe and the US is ridiculously too high !

Hey Tony, it's unexpected to find you in Zhaoqing. I'm very familiar with this city, which is known for having some of the first Chinese Christians. Christian missionaries established the first church in China here in the 17th century. You might consider producing a segment on the religious beliefs of ordinary urban residents in China. Within ten kilometers of your residence, there are ancient Catholic and Christian churches, and nearby there are also old city walls. You could take a walk there during the Sunday morning service (8:00 AM). I think this would be a very interesting topic.
Alex, thank you so much for that detailed information. I certainly do know the old city wall area but not the ancient churches. I shall take a walk there. Thanks again. 👍

Does the $200 per month rental of your apartment includes the furniture like the bed or sofa? What about utilities like water and air conditioning? Even if it does not, it is still a fantastic price. 👍
In this type of apartment, you only need to bring clothes and purchase daily necessities to move in. Of course, you also need to pay for electricity, water, gas, and management fees (5% of the apartment rent). The electricity cost is about 0.1 US dollars per kilowatt hour
$200 a month as foreigner in China? Doesn't sound plausible to me. Even renting an apartment (which could cost over a million $USD) is way more than $200/month.
