I’m one of eight kids. My dad was in the Air Force (USA) and so we moved a lot! Sometimes we lived in base housing which is all looks the same. One day my mother cleaned everything to perfection in the living areas and when my dad came home that evening, he walked in, looked around, and walked back out because he thought he’d walked into the wrong apartment! Oh man! Mama said she’d never clean the house again! LOL
When we moved 22 years ago from one house to another I remember saying “ Everyone should pretend they are moving once a year so they get rid of things “...
Your house looks so huge to me, and I've long been amazed at the energy it seems to take to keep it clean. I bet it will be much easier to clean a smaller house.
A great place to donate all the old towels, Pillows, blankets is at a pet shelter!!! They are always in need of these items and appreciate the donations! Good luck with your move!
I second this! When I cleaned out my mom's house a few years ago, I brought a ton of towels, old sets of bedsheets, blankets, and household cleaning products to our local SPCA and they were so happy to receive them.
I did the one box per kid too. They called them their “baby box”. I went through them every 12-18 months, clearing out some of the older stuff to make room for new. By the time they were 10 or so, they loved to help with the sorting and they added things on their own. Their box went with them when they left the nest.❤️
Thanks for shareing ! I'm currently moving/downsizeing from a large four bedroom house to a three bedroom condo ... and my current landlady is showing the place this weekend. The funny thing is, it allready looks like we have packed most of our stuff ... Yet we haven't packed a single thing. And that is with 3 kids and 1 on the way. Haha minimalism is really amazing. I have moved alot over the last decade and this is the first time where I actually have to wait until the last minute to pack because everything is neccesseties or not enough to bother filling a box or bin to just sit around mostly empty until it's time to move. Cleaning is also easier because I can focus on the house versus the items in the house and don't have a bunch of stuff to clean around.
At age 70 I will be moving in 2 weeks. This video was an insiration for me. I have one more downsize left in this lifetime; from my new 2 bed room apartment to a one bedroom place at some distant point in the future. Smart to declutter wiith each move. Best wishes in your new rural life.
We moved to a house half the size last year and I was amazed how much stuff we got rid of, it felt like a ton! We still find things to declutter at the new place, it's funny when you have less you realize the things you really don't want or are no longer attached to anymore.
I did a huge decluttering four years ago before we moved to our retirement home, which was ¼ smaller. Amazingly, as we were unpacking I still found things that I wondered WHY DID I NOT GET RID OF THIS?!?!
This morning I loaded my van with donations I will be taking to the thrift store. Most of what I decluttered was fabric in tubs. I had 12 large tubs of fabric, thread, and pillows. I also had other things which I declutter. Almost everything came out of two rooms. It feels good to let go of these things. I had seen a video where a lady talked about how she decluttered her house in order to get it ready to sell so I decided that I wanted to declutter my home and get it clean. I want it to be in shape to sell. No, I am not moving I just want things that we don't need gone and to get it in order. By watching Your video I am inspired to go through my house again and see what needs to go away. Thanks for the inspiration! You did a great job!
I’m a blanket hoarder too!! If you have any that are worn or not in the right condition for a thrift shop, you can always donate them to the animal shelters for the sweet pups and kitties to sleep on ❤️🥰
I thought I'd share my moving technique. 1. Declutter 2. Pack up the things you WILL be using: minimal pans & dishes, clothes, etc. Set those boxes/backpacks aside. 3. Whirlwind throw everything else in boxes. Add labels. And stack or ship to the new house. This way I always knew i had everything I NEEDED to survive until everything was unpacked. It's kinda like living as a minimalist for a little while. This technique made me feel free enough to pack everything else I saw as fast as I could. Doing it this way, I managed to pack up and move our entire home of 15 years in less than 2 weeks. I hope this helps. Good luck.
It was a year ago that I moved from a 6 room to my senior studio. Your future self is going to be so happy that you have decluttered and not moved everything with you. You are doing so good Stef! Keep on keeping on. Dont forget to treat yourself.
your future self and eventually any family who must come in and handle your stuff if anything happens to you...i'm going to leaves notes for my adult kids to find when they're sorting through stuff
Wow half the size of your current house! It will be a big change but you got this! The kids will love the open space! Can’t wait to see everything! Good luck!
I decluttered before I moved into a bigger house from a smaller apartment 2 years ago - defs the way to go.👍 And even after I had thinned things out, my friends were laughing: "Your stuff fills this whole house! How did you fit all this in that apartment?!?" LOL! I need to do another round of decluttering this summer - nice to have company on the path!
It looks like we will be moving in 2 months. Just signed the paperwork yesterday. We have the opposite situation because we are moving to a house with a ton of storage. But I don't want to have to pack and unpack all our crap so still trying to get rid of a lot of stuff. Just went through my closet and weeded out 2 big garbage bags of stuff. Its harder than usual to do that because when you are WFH in pjs it's hard to say have I worn it in the past year.
We moved 9 times when I grew up. Five of us kids. We were given a medium moving box (we packed and movers moved). That one box was our personal stuff such as toys. Clothing did not count but yes we downsized. So, maybe each kid one tote of toys they choose. Especially the older kids. Also, at that stage in your move, pack as much yourself now, live out of suitcases for a few weeks. Moving day is stressful so pack now as if you are moving tomorrow. All the knicknacks on walls. Clothes. Toiletries. As if on vacation in your house. That will also show you what you do not need or use. Good luck. You are amazing. You’ve got this.
We were given one box, also. Military kids. We learned quickly not to accumulate too much because we had to say goodbye to things every couple of years. I am a minimalist. My sister keeps EVERYTHING….😂
My parents did this as well. We moved an average of every 18 months. Dad’s job transferred him. Mom told us other kids needed toys. I did better than my brother who built models and kept every one.
There's nothing like moving to inspire a good clearing out. I've lived in the same house for 25 years and it's way too tempting to keep lots of stuff I don't need and will probably never use just because I found room for it somewhere.
I've lived in my house for 22 years and I'm thinking about moving in a year or so. I know there is stuff in the attic over my garage that's been there since I moved in. I've done a lot of whole house declutters and have been pretty intentional about what I bring in. Just the thought of that attic gives me anxiety.
We are putting the house up for sale in less than 2 weeks (and here I am watching videos!). 19 years in this house and we have stuff moved from the last house (6 years there) that never got unpacked!
Super duper job!!! Thank you for your transparency. So many times I watch the perfect, organized, extra clean people that are in a crazy, perfect world. Thanks for being real, Steph. The very best to you with your move & the journey it holds.
I have a hard enough time keeping our home uncluttered and "company ready" clean with just a husband. I can't imagine trying to do this with small children in the mix. That's definitely a lot more work.
Wow! Impressive! Wish I could get thru my stuff that quick!!!! Yes keep all the blankets. Never know when you have full power outage for a long duration. Survival gear to stay alive! I bought the large zip lock storage bags and folded all mine into a bag. I knelt on the bag to squish the air out. Not vacuumed packed but amazing how sm the bags become. I then “file” them in a large tote. The bags really help to contain them; handles on bags makes for easy in/out. I also put some in the rolling under bed totes. Really helpful! Hugs! 🌸🌸💜💜
I think you are great. When I need to get energy to tidy, I watch you first and then I get my motivation. Why are you moving to a smaller house? I love the one you are in. Sending you good luck for your move.
Wow, you are really nailing this! Do you have the dimensions of each room in your new house to plot out if all your furniture fits? I learned that one from Peter Walsh. Who knew?!
I've got rid of 2 truck loads full, 1 car load and a LOT of yard sale JUNK in March 2022. Got rid of 51 pieces of clothing and sold all bit 7 pieces. I made $125.00 on my yard sale. They rest went to Goodwill. I've just started on my another box. Decluttering feels so good.
Have three different type of boxes to make your unboxed easier! 1st. type is for the first few nights there like toiletries, pjs, a few pair of clothes, favorite toys.... 2nd. Type is winter and a 6 months from now ,because you don’t need right away. 3rd is the rest of the stuffs.
I did a couple 1st night/day essentials boxes when we moved a couple weeks ago. One box with towels, wash cloths for everyone, 2 hand towels, t.p., paper towel roll, kitchen utensils, stuff we use often, and put all screws in separate labeled baggies in that box too (med size Lowe's box). Then small tote container of cleaning stuff, dish soap, etc. I did a bedding box of everyone's bedding they were using, put into separate trash bags and pushed all air out, all into a large Lowe's box, for 4 people. Then a box off electronics like xbox, controllers, dvd player etc. And had DVDs ready to watch in a little case. Gotta keep the kids entertained. And I did a Master List, only put numbers on each box and the first letter or first few of where it would go, like M for Master, then first letter of each kid's name with their set of numbers. My husband and I had the 100s, my kids had the 300s and 400s. No we didn't each have 100 boxes, thank goodness but it all really came in handy when trying to find stuff cuz the list had everything that was in each box. No need to write that on the box.
I loved this. You did an amazing job and it must feel so good. We moved from a 4 bedroom ,3 bathroom home 2 years ago to a one bedroom condo and I still declutter. and reorganize. It's actually fun, Best of luck in your new location.
Our third baby threw off the toy purge game because he was a surprise and 6 years younger than my middle. So we started completely over with baby stuff. Then I stalled in the purge rotation. This is really helping
I am amazed at the amount of toys that kids have nowadays compared to my kids in the 60’s. All their toys (2 boys) fit in one toy box. I think it must overwhelm them. Donna, Mike’s wife.
Literally vocalised, "yay" when this notification popped up earlier!! Laughed out loud at the little demon white cat/dog!!! You did amazing Steph, got rid of so much stuff, ps your hair is so lovely... You suit it both wavy and straight xx
through my job i had to go to a thrift store, he took me to their sort room, it was this huge warehouse, high ceilings, stacked almost to the ceiling. i noticed the incredible amount of shoes...it was like the end of indiana jones where the pan back at the end showing the stacks of boxes in government storage....i saw staff standing by huge bins...sorting. I felt such compassion for them having to do this job...so good job mentioning not sending your trash and calling it a donation...other humans have to sort through this stuff. Great video..thanks
I want to move to a farm, or at least further out into the country. My husband will have none of it. He does not want anything to do with outside animals, farm work, cutting all that grass, etc. We are seniors now so it is too late.
We have a lot of blankets too. I think it's partly because we camp and go to outdoor music festivals. Or maybe I just hoard blankets. I have some old closet doors (long story) I want made into a blanket box. But even then, I don't know where I'll put THAT!
one of my moves i had little time to pack, so as the deadline approached things were thrown into boxes...and after a few months of renting a storage unit i thought i should look through what we're paying to store, so much worthless stuff. my clue was we were living without missing things. that moment has stuck with me so i've been working to declutter to avoid doing the same thing, or if something happened to me, my kids deserve to avoid going through the clutter i avoided...so it's a gift to my children (who are busy adults). i'm not a hoarder, i just never want to take the time to do it, i have a hobbies i love and would prefer to spend my limited time on hobbies...thanks for this video encouraging us to make the time.....btw...i did toy rotation too, now doing it for toys i have for my grandkids, it really works by limiting choices, kids are frozen by the clutter too.
I’m working through this process right now I do it at least once a year. We moved a lot when my husband was in the military when we were first married and I’ve learned to pare down. I’m amazed at how much I come up with to donate each year. It is a very satisfying feeling! Wishing you all the best in your new house!
I am so happy for you guys! Smaller homes are wonderful. Less to clean and maintain and more time for hobbies, play and getting outside. I am also a blanket hoarder. 😉 thank you for a very inspiring video. 👍😁
When we moved 3 years ago to another state, I started decluttering over a year in advance. We got rid of at least 65% of what we had accumulated. VERY smart move to do this with your move too. ! Well done Steph !!!! 🥰💐🌱🌿🌷🌼🌻🌞🌵🏜️💞💗
I have decluttered in the past but over the last year, I have eliminated my pack rat ways. Family moved in and some things got moved around, but a lot of things got moved out. We want to move next year. I love how fearless you are about it.
Good job. Sorry about your Morano wool pants and top. I’ve got some clothes that are waiting for the 20 pound loss 😂. Time to go, thanks for the push 🤗. I “donated” to my DS and DDIL new home 😃. Have a fantastic week 🙋♀️
Just found this video, and it's perfect! We're about to move to a smaller house, and I'm excited for the chance to really downsize. Our house now isn't huge, but it's easy to keep things we don't need, or at least to put off deciding since we have space and our house is so much less cluttered than it has been! Good luck with your move!
Love your videos. It seems like not that long ago I saw a tour of your beautiful house. So sorry to see you’re leaving it. It seemed to be your dream home you built.
Excited to see how the new house comes together. I am STILL dealing with a larger home and NOT MUCH for storage....as in , no entry closet( we have coats in Montana) no linen storage.....a WEIRD master closet...as in most of my stuff is elsewhere....really odd issues....so I am excited to see your fixes for the smaller house....because my storage is like a SMALLER HOME! When do we get to see your new house?
Same here! We live in a 2200 sq foot apartment in Chicago and our friends rave about how much space we have... but there’s no entry closet, no laundry closet, no linen closet, only two drawers and four small cabinets in the kitchen, no pantry closet, and very small master closet (enough for just my husbands clothes). A lot of the space is just useless dead space and I’m dying to move somewhere smaller and more functional!
Montana? Isn't that where the cowboys are? We live in England UK and I have 1 coat few jackets. As started decluttering 2 years ago through the Grace Of God.
Awesome encouragement Steph!!! Thanks for taking the time to share your life with us :-) And may God bless you in your new home in the country ... I am sure you will absolutely love it… At least we do :-)
Great video! ☺️ we actually moved from an apartment to a house and before we moved I decluttered 2 car loads of stuff as we are trying to become more minimal. Yet we moved in and even though we have more space I still feel like there is so much more we need to declutter and organize as boxes are still not unpacked down in the basement. Can’t wait to tackle it! Thanks for the motivation and can’t wait to see your new house 🥰
Wow Steph, I feel so tired after just watching this video, you did an amazing job and have inspired me so much! Congratulations on moving, I'm sure your new place will be amazing!
Next week I'm going to pull everything out of the guest room closet and sort it on our master king sized bed. I'm going to be ruthless in decluttering because I have too many items for this small house. Smiles...
By donating my dear you will be getting ALLOT of prayers from people that u donated things too. Which means your energy , frequency and vibration in and around you will change more Positive energy activated. Msk8ng space for new people and opportunities in your life?. Can you imagine what people will feel when they find what they needed from your unwmanted items? JOY Happiness . Go for it . Best of Wishes
20 years ago we had to move very quickly from one state to another. There was zero time to pack, so no time to declutter. All 115 cartons were packed by the movers and placed in the garage in the new house. It took me years to unpack. And still probably have stuff that needs to go buh-bye!
I just had to move out of my art studio and gallery. The owner sold. I have most of the furniture in storage and art and supplies came home. I'm trying to sort and declutter. It's so hard!
Great timing! We are also on the move and I need a bit of inspiration! My kids are older though so it’s a bit more of a battle! Good luck with your move! X
When I was downsizing 3 years ago I thought I would have time to be organized like this but the house sold in one day and new owners wanted to close very quickly. I was also working full time. I donated so much stuff but towards the end got so much decision fatigue. Fast forward and sometimes I pick up an item now and think, I can’t believe this item made the cut and yet I got rid of some other stuff that I could have used. Oh well, still no regrets!
We moved a year ago to a different state and decluttered then rather quickly. We are building a new house and I find myself decluttering again. It is just amazing what we keep and when I look at it I think to myself why do I have this?😂😂 And I too am a blanket hoarder!😂😂 Thanks for showing the reality and giving such helpful tips!! Can't wait to see your new house.☺️
Oh my that big brown bear you pulled out of the closet! We have that! My kids are 23 and 19. One of them doesn’t even live with us anymore but I get resistance every time I try to get rid of it. Mainly from my husband (GIANT eye roll!)
Awesome job decluttering!! I'm not moving, but I recently went through my whole house and decluttered in preparation of a Garage Sale we were having. I got rid of so much. It feels amazing to have less stuff everywhere. You look beautiful by the way. You remind me of Cameron Diaz in this video. :)
I moved (and downsized) 8 months ago. I did a huge declutter before the move but even after 8 months, I am still unpacking and trying to find a place for everything (ugh!). But I’m slowly working through everything and continue to declutter as I go. I have found myself keeping things until I realize I don’t need them and into the donate box they go. I have lots of blankets too. I bought a blanket basket and what does not fit in there has been donated.
12 years ago we moved from the city to the country so I decided to buy nearly all new stuff to go in the new house we built. (ie Crockery, Cutlery, Glasses, Sheets, Towels). I had a huge declutter. My Mother in Law was quite angry when I gave away a ton of stuff including some Wedding presents. But as I said "If it was still in the box after 15 years and some still had gift cards attached I was unlikely to use it". It was easier to declutter than I thought but I felt great for having done it. The Charity shops got loads of stuff and all the old sheets and towels went to an Animal rescue Charity. I do a declutter every 12 months now and it was very helpful and relaxing to do it during the Covid Lockdowns we have had.
7:38 minutes 😂
Hahah I totally missed that - little ham :D
The Secret Slob I love it. Sooooo cute
She's mommy's helper and proud of it! Precious!!
I thought it was hilarious also lol
@@TheSecretSlob I had to back and watch it twice. She made me laugh out loud.
I recently went through 40 years of sentimental items. My approach was "if I moved to Australia, would I be happy to pay to ship this?"!
What a good rule of thumb! Love it
I already live here what do i do haha!
Love that idea!
@@Amy_Stanmore Me too and i'm struggling... lol
I've just started asking myself that as well!!! I live in Canada and I ask myself if I were to move to say France, would I pay the money to ship this?

Totally agree!!
Absolutely! When I declutter, I always ask myself if I would want to pack this item, move it and then unpack it. The answer 90% of the time is…nope.
I have lived in the same home over 30 years. I think I will pretend I am moving. 🤗👍🥳
@@24carrotgold8 I really like to know the result😊

I've got rid of 2 truck loads full, 1 car load and a LOT of yard sale JUNK in March 2022. Got rid of 51 pieces of clothing and sold all bit 7 pieces. I made $125.00 on my yard sale. They rest went to Goodwill. I've just started on my another box. Decluttering feels so good.
We are in this current house since 30/6/1999.
We are very happy staying here.
Good tip, declutter as if will be moving out👍.
When we moved into a 35 foot travel trailer, the decluttering process was difficult, and yet it was freeing.
No need to write that on the box.
i mark the open immediately boxes with red duct tape...the movers appreciated that, because the boxes were sorted by the colored duct tape
I had to stop the video and replay where you handed your daughters things from the laundry room cabinet. Love it!!! LOLOL!!!
I loved this. You did an amazing job and it must feel so good. We moved from a 4 bedroom ,3 bathroom home 2 years ago to a one bedroom condo and I still declutter. and reorganize. It's actually fun, Best of luck in your new location.
You are very much an inspiration! Thank you. I enjoy learning from you so much.
I know🤯
Love your decluttering videos!!!
Literally vocalised, "yay" when this notification popped up earlier!! Laughed out loud at the little demon white cat/dog!!! You did amazing Steph, got rid of so much stuff, ps your hair is so lovely... You suit it both wavy and straight xx
Haha if you know you know 🤣
Yes, great job! Decluttering duplicate, blurry or unflattering photos now in preparation for a move abroad.
Dressing your truth was a game changer for my wardrobe. 👌 Your resources & videos have been helpful to me. Thank you!
through my job i had to go to a thrift store, he took me to their sort room, it was this huge warehouse, high ceilings, stacked almost to the ceiling. i noticed the incredible amount of shoes...it was like the end of indiana jones where the pan back at the end showing the stacks of boxes in government storage....i saw staff standing by huge bins...sorting. I felt such compassion for them having to do this job...so good job mentioning not sending your trash and calling it a donation...other humans have to sort through this stuff. Great video..thanks
Same! Moving long distance, and THIS is exactly what I've been doing! Thank you for the inspiration and direction
Very happy for you and family living in a farm it's amazing!
When you said you had been 20 lbs less, I was shocked! You look SO good NOW! Thanks for the video. Good info!
Great video Steph!
Can you please add the Dress your truth link, sounds like just what I need!
Can’t wait to hear more about your decision to move to a farm! We love ours
I would like to move into a farm for a few wks. But I have baggage lol.
I like your motto of "progress, not perfection!" And you look amazing in the bright pink sweatshirt when you were decluttering the toys!
one of my moves i had little time to pack, so as the deadline approached things were thrown into boxes...and after a few months of renting a storage unit i thought i should look through what we're paying to store, so much worthless stuff. my clue was we were living without missing things. that moment has stuck with me so i've been working to declutter to avoid doing the same thing, or if something happened to me, my kids deserve to avoid going through the clutter i avoided...so it's a gift to my children (who are busy adults). i'm not a hoarder, i just never want to take the time to do it, i have a hobbies i love and would prefer to spend my limited time on hobbies...thanks for this video encouraging us to make the time.....btw...i did toy rotation too, now doing it for toys i have for my grandkids, it really works by limiting choices, kids are frozen by the clutter too.
Loved this vídeo! I'm starting to declutter to move... To a smaller house. Let's go!
Oh wow! Just the right top cut and color for you! Very classy!
That little orange-ish bear with the apple bib! I have that from when I was little lol. Too cute. Love your videos!
Can’t wait to see your new house. Good job in decluttering
The amount of stuff you collect in even a week, it's a lot! My house is pretty tied up but I fear that when i move it still is a lot more than I think
Didn’t realize you were moving someplace smaller. You get lots more done in a short amount of time than I do. Congratulations!
Love your videos. It seems like not that long ago I saw a tour of your beautiful house. So sorry to see you’re leaving it. It seemed to be your dream home you built.
Super motivating, thanks for sharing. Starting my own summer cleaning/purge this week.
You deserve a trophy 🏆 You are literally superwoman! Where do you get all this energy, I felt tired after watching you😅
You are so cheerful! By now I'd be ripping my hair out!! Lol
@@Sketchbook9999
Probably more cowboys in Wyoming...
Alterations?
20 years ago we had to move very quickly from one state to another. There was zero time to pack, so no time to declutter. All 115 cartons were packed by the movers and placed in the garage in the new house. It took me years to unpack. And still probably have stuff that needs to go buh-bye!
Recognizable. I once walked down the street and thought 'look they have so much too', it was my own house...
I just had to move out of my art studio and gallery. The owner sold. I have most of the furniture in storage and art and supplies came home. I'm trying to sort and declutter. It's so hard!
Amazing declutter
We have alot of blankets too. We are grandparents so we get a lot of blankets as gifts. Haha we love them
I enjoyed this thank you
Great timing!
OMG such great tips. I wish I would have thought of that when we moved. I wish I would have thought of the basket idea.
Totally amazing! You had quite the job facing you and you conquered it!! GO YOU!!! (Shaking my pom-poms!!)
Thank you for showing us this. It makes me know that I can do it to. 😁
All your tips are practical and sensible! This is something I need to do too :) also, your house is so pretty!
Love the kid fingerprints on the mirror!
THumbs up & subscribed! We moved from 2500 sq feet and moved to 1200 sq feet. We are still getting rid of things! We have been here a year!
Oh my that big brown bear you pulled out of the closet! We have that! My kids are 23 and 19. One of them doesn’t even live with us anymore but I get resistance every time I try to get rid of it. Mainly from my husband (GIANT eye roll!)
I love your hair!! So cute 🥰
Love the blanket count. 😁 Your videos are so therapeutic. 😊
Im the same way as you i like finding the whole set to a toy before i donate it because i want that child who receives it to have all the pieces 💜
Just found you. Your amasing! Thx you for your work🥰
12 years ago we moved from the city to the country so I decided to buy nearly all new stuff to go in the new house we built.
Amazing! What a huge effort, all the best for your move!
