Karajan was not only the greatest conductor ever but also an extremely humble person. A man who was able to admit openly how he admired other conductors' skills (think about the Kleiber anecdote but also about the fact Karajan always listened to Tullio Serafin's records before touching any Italian opera or Charles Munch's before conducting French Music...) could only be a real man, not only a great Conductor. This is why I usually tell all my orchestral players and cooperators in Music that Karajan made me a better person, not only from the technical and music point of view.

Another very interesting interview. Just a point of information: Herr Flury mentions Tchaikovsky's 5th symphony, but he is actually referring to the 6th.

Bei 09:50 meint er die 6. Tschaikowsky, nicht die 5.

They had some reason to be skeptical, though: Karajan was very spontaneous in his pieces and rehearsals. But perhaps the definition of control was different back then; Toscanini was just as much a dictator to his orchestra as Karajan was towards the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Karajans Klasse, als Musiker, 92%, leitete er nie das Berlioz Requiem, sein Beethoven Neunter ,,war ein paar Klicks zu schnell

@@pjones6749 Strange. I've tried it again, and still no subtitles. Maybe they are banned in some countries.

Karajans Vater war offenbar Chirurg, und das Wort Chirurg kommt ja von Griechisch cheir, und das heisst Hand.
