    There are actually weirder icon retailers than monastery. There is a sect that calls itself something akin to the “African Orthodox Church”, and they make icons of jazz musicians. Also to avoid: certain Carribean syncretic cults (voodoo and related) as they use icons, chalices, etc in cultic practices.

      Legacy Icons is a good place. We live near them and the founder actually attended our Orthodox church for a while before he moved away. But the icons are laminated unless they tell you its hand made. But its good quality and thats how our family started. The incense is also good like you mentioned.

    Can you answer me this question. I'm asking for a friend because she doesn't seem to be able to understand and I am awful at explaining... but WHY is it important to get an icon from a credible source rather than just random places on the internet? And what do you think of using printed icons from a computer printer? If you have answered this before, I am sorry.

    Question on the idea of a schism, I’ve been hearing many Old Calendarists and Sedevacantists say they’re not schismatic but the main Church, how does one determine who is the one causing a schism?

    • @gillianc6514
      @gillianc6514 3 роки тому +6

      In general for both Orthodox and Catholic, if they are led by an excommunicated bishop then they are in schism, if they are led by a bishop whose lineage can not be traced by the laying on of hands back to the early church, then they are probably in schism, if they are not led by a bishop then they were never part of the church, so technically they are not in schism. Also, look at the fruits of the churches, if there is disunity and they are specific to one geographical location, then they do not make the 4 marks of the church: being one, holy, catholic and apostolic. Old Calendarists and Sedevacantists do not agree amongst themselves, indeed the Old Calendarists have a range of different calendars they object to, and Sedevacantists can not agree when exactly the Pope in Rome became an imposter, there exists Old Catholics who did not accept Vatican I in the 1850s. Also if the church is primarily concerned with its identity in such a negative sense (defined by always saying what they are not) and has no missionary zeal and no track record of martyrs, then it may indeed be far from the true church. There are problems with all of these ideas, none can be said to be absolute...... the main thing really is the 4 marks of the church, if they don't have those then avoid. The groups you mention do not have the catholicity (sobornost is the word used more commonly by the Orthodox- but it has the same meaning) to be true.

      @Annabelle Haibt I do not pray or bow down to icons or images, but it is not a sin to have one. Also, if you are gonna quote scripture, you better quote it completely.
      4 "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
      5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
      6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments." (Exodus 20:4-6 -> Third Commandment)
      "The definition of idolatry, according to Webster, is “the worship of idols or excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing.” An idol is anything that replaces the one, true God. The most prevalent form of idolatry in Bible times was the worship of images that were thought to embody the various pagan deities." If that is the case, then not only we are breaking 3rd commandment, but 1st and 2nd as well. I do not remember worshipping or venerating any other deity other than the LORD (God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit ; One True God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who created heaven and earth, who is Alpha and Omega).
      You do not need an icon to be a better Christian, neither did early apostles required one, but it is not a sin to enjoy and admire an art.
      God bless.
      Edit: I forgot to mention one more thing I found.
      "Idolatry extends beyond the worship of idols and images and false gods. Our modern idols are many and varied. Even for those who do not bow physically before a statue, idolatry is a matter of the heart-pride, self-centeredness, greed, gluttony, a love for possessions and ultimately rebellion against God. Is it any wonder that God hates it?"
